Claude M. Steele Graduate School Honorary Degree Recipient and Commencement Speaker

Claude M. Steele was born in Chicago, IL on what many people bel ieve to be the fi rst day of the baby boom, January 1, 1946. He grew up in a family of four children in a working-class suburb of Chicago. His memories of childhood include his family's involvement in the Civil Rights and school desegregation movements. The dinner table was an ongoing seminar, and there is little doubt that this background led to many of the interests that have occupied Dr. Steele throughout his career. When he finally took an introductory social psychology course in college, his love for it seemed predestined; he had arrived where he belonged.

Dr. Steele received his B.A. in psychology from Hiram College and his M.A. and Ph.D. in social psychology from Ohio State University in 1971. Dr. Steele's first academic position was at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City where he began his research on self-image threat. He then joined the faculty at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1973 where his research included selfaffirmation and its role in selfregulation. Fourteen years later he joined the faculty at the University of Michigan where he studied the academic under-achievement of minority students. He moved to Stanford University in 1991 where he further developed the theory of stereotype threat, designating a common process through which people from different groups - being threatened by different stereotypes - can have quite different experiences in the same situation.

Dr. Steele is the Lucie Stern Professor in the Social Sciences and past chair of the Depar t ment of Psychology at Stanford. He is the Director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford. Dr. Steele has received the Dean 's Teaching Award at Stanford University, the William James Fellow Award from the American Psychological Society, the Kurt Lewin Award and the Gordon Allport Prize in Social Psychology from the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award and the Senior Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest from the American Psychological Association, and the Cattell Faculty Fellowship. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Education, the American Philosophical Society and the National Academy of Sciences and he has been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Michigan, University of Chicago, Yale University, and Princeton University.

Virginia M. Dresher Undergraduate Commencement Honorary Degree Recipient

Growing up in a large family of modest circumstances during the Great Depression , Virginia M. Dresher learned the importance of integrity, hard work , love and generosity. A talented musician , she also developed a lifelong passion for the arts and education .

Those values and interests shaped her philanthropic activities, which have included two important contributions to UMBC: funding scholarships for students from Harford County, where she lives, and supporting the James T. and Virginia M. Dresher Center for the Humanities, which is named for Mrs. Dresher and her late husband.

Mrs. Dresher has supported many other worthwhile organizations through the Dresher Foundation , which she and Jim established in 1989 to work primarily in Harford and Baltimore counties and Baltimore city. Recipients of her generosity have included such wellknown institutions as Johns Hopkins Medicine and Habitat for Humanity, as well as smaller programs that advance educat ion and the arts and help the disadvantaged.

Mrs. Dresher has been active in Christ Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, the Country Garden Club of Harford County and PEa International which promotes educational opportunities for women.

Mrs. Dresher was born in Munhall , a steelmaking town just outside Pittsburgh. As a child and young adult , she played piano and clarinet well enough to win seats in Pennsylvania state orchestras and bands and to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York.

After a year in secretarial school, she took a job in the accounting department of the U.S. Steel Corporation 's Homestead Works. She and Jim were married in 1942 and had four children.

From the mid 1950s to the mid 1980s, the family lived in various cities across the country as Jim became an ever-more-successful business executive. Mrs. Dresher played an essential supporting role in his career and raised a remarkably close-knit family.

Today, she lives on historic Glenangus Farms where, according to her children and grandchildren , she serves as the family 's " hub, " "glue" and "moral compass. " Her four children and most of her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren live within a few minutes drive of her home.

United States Senator Paul S. Sarbanes Undergraduate Commencement Honorary Degree Recipient and Commencement Speaker

Paul s. Sarbanes worked for the people of Maryland for more than four decades, first as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, then as a Congressman from the Third Congressional District, and fi nally as the State's longest serving Senator for an unprecedented five terms. From 1977-2007, he served as the Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee and was a senior member of the Foreign Relations, Budget, and Joint Economic Committees. Senator Sarbanes chose not to seek re-election in 2006.

Born on Maryland's Eastern Shore, Senator Sarbanes was the son of Greek immigrants who owned the Mayflower Restaurant on Salisbury's Main Street. After graduating from Wicomico High School in Salisbury, he received an academic and athletic scholarship to Princeton University (B.A. degree, 1954). He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University (M.A., 1957). Senator Sarbanes then returned to the United States and attended Harvard Law School. After graduating in 1960, he clerked for Federal Judge Morris A. Soper before entering private practice with two Baltimore City law firms.

In 1966, Senator Sarbanes ran for the Maryland House of Delegates in Baltimore City and won. During his four years as a State Legislator in Annapolis he served on the Judiciary and Ways and Means Committees. In 1970, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. While in the House, Senator Sarbanes served on the House Judic iary Committee, the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee, and the Select Committee on House Reorganization. In 1974, Senator Sarbanes was selected by his Democratic colleagues on the House Watergate Committee to introduce the first Article of Impeachment for obstruction of justice against President Richard Nixon.

In his capacity as Chairman of the Senate Banking , Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, Senator Sarbanes held a series of comprehensive hearings in response to the failure of Enron Corporation in 2001. A bipartisan bill designed to reform the accounting industry and restore investor confidence was signed into law on July 30, 2002. "The Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act, " known as the "Sarbanes-Oxley Act ," has been called "the most far-reaching reform of American business practices since the time of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. " The legislation creates a strong independent board to oversee the auditors of public companies.

As a result of his work in shepherding this historic legislation through the Congress, Senator Sarbanes was honored in June 2003 with the prestigious Paul H. Douglas Ethics in Government Award from the University of Illinois. The award was established in 1992 to honor Senator Douglas, a man often labeled "the conscience of the United States Senate." It was established to honor individuals who have made a substantial contribution to promoting ethics.

In his many conversations with students across the State of Maryland, Senator Sarbanes discusses his passion for public service and the high premium placed on involvement in public life by the ancient Greeks. He notes that in Athens, those who lived only in private life were falling short and called idiotes, from which the word "idiot" is derived.

Senator Sarbanes and his wife Christine Dunbar Sarbanes have three grown children - Congressman John Sarbanes, Michael Sarbanes, and Janet Sarbanes - and six grandchildren. Senator and Christine Sarbanes reside in Baltimore.

Commencement Information

ACADEMIC REGALIA: CAPS AND GOWNS AND THEIR MEANING

The procession of faculty and staff dressed in academic regalia is one of the most colorful and distinctive elements of the University's Convocation and Commencement ceremonies. The style of the robe and the color and length of the hood serve to distinguish the academic degree the wearer has earned and the institution that awarded it.

The origins of academic dress date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when universities were taking form. Patterned after monk's robes, the earliest academic robes were made of heavy wool-useful for keeping warm in unheated buildings. The long and colorful hoods worn today originally probably served a similar useful purpose.

In the days of Henry VIII of England, Oxford and Cambridge first began prescribing a definite academic dress and made it a matter of university control even to the extent of its minor details. The assignment of colors to signify certain disciplines was a much later development and was standardized in the United States in the late 19th century.

CAPS

Mortarboards, or "oxford caps," trace their history to the square cap with a tuft on top that was awarded to students in the Middle Ages when they completed their courses of study. The mortarboard is always black. Individuals who have earned doctorates may also opt to wear an eight-sided soft tam or beret, after the style of those worn at Cambridge University. The tassel fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap is usually black or, in the case of a doctoral degree, gold.

GOWNS

Prior to the Civil War, students at most American universities wore caps and gowns every day. Today they are used almost exclusively at ceremonial occasions. (Some universities, such as Oxford in England, still require their students

to wear gowns and hoods every day.) The bachelor's degree gown is the simplest-plain black with pointed sleeves. The master's degree gown has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, and is worn with a hood. The gown for the doctoral degree is the most elaborate, with bell-shaped sleeves marked with three velvet bars and a long, colorful hood. Almost all academic gowns are black, although a number of institutions now have doctoral gowns in their university's color.

HOODS

Awarded at graduation to master's and doctoral degree students, hoods are another distinguishing part of the academic costume. The length of the hood varies based on degree. The master's hood is three-and-one-half-feet long with a three-inch side border and the doctoral hood is four-feet long with a five-inch-wide border.

Hoods are lined with the official colors of the college or university that conferred the degree, or the college or university at which the wearer serves on the faculty. (UMBC's hoods are lined with black and gold.) The hood's border is outlined in a color that indicates the wearer's field of study.

There are 25 different approved colors for designation of disciplines in the academic costume. The disciplines and colors most likely to be seen in the academic procession at UMBC are:

Arts and Humanities. White Economics ............... Copper Education ................. Light Blue Engineering .............. Orange Fine Arts .................. Brown Library Science ........ Lemon Music ...................... Pink Philosophy ............... Dark Blue Science .................... Golden Yellow Social Work .............. Citron

HONORS

Summa cum laude ("With the greatest honor"): Students graduating with a GPA of 3.95 to 4.0.

Magna cum laude ("With high honors"): Students graduating with a GPA of 3.75 to 3.94.

Cum laude ("With honor"): Students graduating with a GPA of 3.50 to 3.74.

Honors listed in this program have been computed from the end of the Fall 2007 semester. Honors earned after that time are not included in the program. The gold stoles worn by graduates denote honors. Red cords are worn by graduates who have earned a 4.0 grade point average and who have completed at least 45 semester hours at UMBC. Blue cords are worn by graduates who are UM BC Meyerhoff Scholars, high-achieving students who have an interest in pursuing doctoral study in the sciences, mathematics, computer science and engineering and who are interested in the advancement of minorities in these fields.

UMBC PRESIDENTIAL INSIGNIA

Crafted by Baltimore silversmith, Martha Hopkins, the presidential insignia is worn by UM BC President Freeman Hrabowski at Commencement, Convocation and official University events. The insignia was commissioned by the UMBC Alumni Association as a gift in honor of UMBC's 30th anniversary.

Unlike more traditional-looking insignia, UMBC's is contemporary in nature, reflecting the innovative character of the University. Composed primarily of sterling silver with a touch of copper, mixed metals and blue-green glass, the lightweight design is based on a triangular band, with three corners representing the foundations of the University-teaching, research and service.

UMBC CEREMONIAL MACE

UMBC did not have a mace of its own until 1986, 20 years after its founding. Commissioned by the Alumni Association, it was presented at the 17th Commencement ceremony on June 8, 1986, in honor of John W. Dorsey, chancellor from 1977 to 1986. It is hand-carved mahogany with a solid brass seal, and was crafted by local artist, Charles Strauss. It is carried by the Grand Marshal, who is the current president of the Faculty Senate.

UMBC CEREMONIAL BATONS

The Commencement batons, carried by the Students', Faculty, Staff and Graduate School Marshals, are gifts from the Alumni Association in honor of UMBC's 40th Anniversary. Constructed of walnut, with the UM BC seal in brass on the top, the batons were designed to compliment the mace carried by the Grand Marshal.

NAMES IN PROGRAM

Attendance at the University's commencement is voluntary. This program lists the names of all those eligible to participate in this commencement, not just those attending the ceremony. Additionally, some names may not be listed if the graduating student did not submit his/her application before the graduation deadline or the names were not submitted by the final printing deadline. Because the program is printed before the final certification of grades, neither the appearance of a name in this program nor attendance

at the commencement ceremony is necessarily a valid indication of graduation. The diploma of the University and an official transcript provide an authentic testimony to the conferring of a degree.
