Alcoholic Beverages Sector

The Mauritian alcoholic beverages market is valued over MUR 1 Bn and is expected to triple by 2025. Beer is the most consumed alcoholic drink in Mauritius and contains around 4-7% of alcohol followed by rum, wine and other spirits. Craft beer has gained popularity among a large section of consumers in the country. The growing popularity of craft beer among the consumers, especially the younger generation, is considered as the major factor of growth. Local companies are launching innovative products because of the changing consumer preferences. New product launches and innovations in alcoholic drinks are favouring the growth of the industry.

Mauritius is known for its sugarcane cultivation and is famous for the production of special sugars. When sugarcane was introduced in Mauritius in the 1600’s, it revolutionized local society, the reverberations of which are still felt today. The labour-intensive crop generated a demand for sugar on the European market which left a by-product in molasses - the raw material in Traditional rum production. In the early 2000’s, the island’s few rum producers began experimenting with Agricultural Rum and concurrently began exporting to global markets. With the sharp decline in the value of sugar, rum became a far more valuable export product.

Mauritius stands as one of the few countries that produces both Agricultural Rums (a rum distilled from the juice of fresh-cut sugar cane) & Traditional Rums (molasses-based rums). With such a rich seam of history and heritage to draw on, Mauritian spirits are well placed to capitalize on this trend, offering a broad range of styles and flavours. Mauritius makes some truly exceptional rums, but where it stands out from its competitors, is in its infusions. In line with the vision of graduating the offering of the classic Mauritian Rum to a new level of sophistication, a large variety of infused rums has been introduced, which uses the island’s local fruits and spices, such as Queen Victoria pineapples, vanilla beans, coffee, ginger, chillies, coconut and passion fruits. As opposed to tasting like a sweet syrup, the outcome is a flavoursome, palatable spirit with hints of coffee, roasted vanilla, spicy chilli and tart passion fruit.

Rum forms part of Mauritius’ cultural heritage.Today, we have a range of over 35 rums and rum-related products which have performed exceptionally in international tasting competitions such as London Spirits Competition, China Wine & Spirit Awards, The Spirits Business, World Rum Awards, World Spirits Awards, German Rum Award, Ultimate Spirits Challenge and International Wine & Spirit Competition amongst others and our rums are distributed in over 10 countries in Europe and internationally.

The Mauritian spirit is emerging as a fast-developing subsector within the sugar cane industry.

TASTING PROFILEExtremely intense and complex, warm spices with notes of vanilla, dried fruits, toffee, caramel and nuts. Following the success of the Single Barrel 2009 – Batch No 1, the Distillery has decided to bottle a second cask. Selected at the peak of its maturity, the sugar cane was harvested from the best plantation of the Estate. The Double Distillation method captures the Heart of the Rum which is then aged at the Domain in a new French Oak Barrel. Our Master Cellar has tasted and selected this unique Barrel for its rich aromas, soft taste, silky and elegant finish.

Perched 300 meters above the coast, in the heart of a fertile valley of the South West part of Mauritius lies the Chamarel Single Estate Rum. Chamarel Single Estate Rum is one of the rare distilleries still in activity to cultivate its own sugarcane. They are carefully selected and grown exclusively for the production of the Chamarel Rums here lies the first secret of its quality. The harvest is done by hand, without ever burning the crops, between July to December. Through tailor made mills, the sugarcane is pressed by small batch and fresh juice is collected ensuring optimum quality. The identification of the various crops and their traceability will allow the Master Blender to select the finest lots for the White Rums and the Old Rums. The distillery is also the only facility having a copper column still and 2 copper pot still ensuring its distillation process. Our aging cellar build half way in the slope of the valley ensures ideal conditions for tropical aging. The combination of different oak barrels European and American, new and used ones along with our unique rum profiles completes a rumarkable experience.Production capacity In 2019 we had an estimated production capacity of 200,000 liters of alcohol at 50%.Product brandsOur products are under the label “Chamarel Premium Rum”.Main exporting destinationsMain exporting countries are France, Germany, England, Italy and some northern Europe countries.

This Pure Cane Rum is distilled in a Column Still and matured for 18 months in Oak VAT (5,600 Lts). A well balanced Rum, very fresh and fruity, with subtle notes of spices & vanilla. Ideal for cocktails.

GRAYS - SINGLE ESTATE RUM PRODUCER

The story of rum is intimately linked to the history of Mauritius. And when you savour rum, you delve into the very heart of the island and discover the taste of authenticity; carried by the inspirations of an expertise that has been constantly renewed over almost two centuries, composed of Heritage and quality. Created entirely by us, “from field to glass”, in the first distillery of Mauritius, Grays rums symbolise what truly characterises the identity and spirit of the island: “Authentic, Warm and Welcoming.”

The Domaine de La Villebague, in the village of Pamplemousses, was home to the first sugar mill of the island in 1740. Soon afterwards, in 1742, the first rum distillery saw the light of day. It is Pierre Charles Harel, born in 1806, who then endeavoured to considerably improve distillation techniques and the entire legal framework surrounding this activity. The Domaine de Villebague is still the property of his heirs, who founded the company GRAYS INC LTD. They sustain the tradition and make authentic rums, NEW GROVE, MAURICIA & LAZY DODO, which’s exclusivity is nestled in the heart of the land that once hosted the first and only distillery and sugar mill of the East India Company era.

Classic Range

In the case of the Original rum and the Premium rum, which are solely white rum, no other ingredients are added. The classic gold, on the other hand, is made by adding natural oak extracts to the white rum. The Spiced gold, being more complex in taste as it goes for a maceration of 6 weeks with spices and citrus fruits.

The Domaine de Labourdonnais established in 1774 is nestled in beautiful gardens and lush orchards. In 2006, the Distillerie de Labourdonnais was built .Today, the Distillerie regroups a young and dynamic team who is specialised in the production of agricultural rum made from pure sugar cane juice.

The crop starts in July and ends in December. For Labourdonnais we are distilling between August and November where the sugar cane is at its best.

After the cutting of the required quantity of sugarcane, all the collected sugarcane is sent to the sugar factory of Terra where the fresh press of pure sugarcane juice is collected and transported to the distillation plant. Once on site, the juice is filtered once again for a second purification through a rotary filter to remove any small fibres, mud etc. and then transferred to the yeast tank. The dormant yeast is activated and then added to the juice and is kept for 44 hours so that the yeast could expand. This particular phase is whereby a rich culture of yeast is formed and ready to be used in other tanks to start the process of fermentation.

The next step will be the distillation. Our distillation column has 20 trays in its stripping section and 15 trays in its rectifying section. The desired product or the distillate is collected from three different trays in the rectifying section. The lowest tray will have a heavy distillate while the highest tray will have a lighter distillate. The final product coming from the column passes through a condenser and is collected.

The annual production varies between 150,000 to 200,000 L of rum at 89% Vol on average, depending on the demands. Prior to being used, the distillate or rum, is resting in the tanks for at least 6 months. Once this is achieved, the rum can be used to prepare our recipes.

The company proposes 3 categories of products are the classic range, the fusion range and Premium Range. The classic range consists of two white rums which are the Original rum at 50% VOL and the Classic rum which is at 40% VOL, the classic Gold rum at 40% Vol, the Spiced Gold rum at 40% vol. The Fusion range and the premium rum range comprise of the XO vintage, Gentlemen Single Barrel Editions and Amelia.

LITCHQUOR LTD is a dynamic Mauritian company which specializes in the development of premium spirits. All products are produced in small batches with distillates from sugar cane harvested on the fertile volcanic grounds around the island.

Frederic Bestel is a Mauritian businessman who has 16 years of experience in the product development and export industry, specializing in wine and spirits. In 2012, he created his company Litchquor Ltd and his credo is “Mauritius is always at the heart of all our developments.”

The Bestel family is known to have settled in Mauritius around 1800. Originally from Sedan in the French Ardennes-Champagne region, the production of fine liqueurs is part of the family DNA. Following the passion of his father who ran a small business of distilled sugar cane spirits and liqueurs, Frederic started to create his very own Litchi Liqueur during his studies. And he was famous for it.

Today, LITCHQUOR has become a successful player in the export of Mauritian Rum. Not attached to any of the distilleries, the company independently uses the best Rums from all around the island and creates outstanding premium spirits which represent the entirety of Mauritius and its many facets.

The key product of Litchquor is therefore a tribute to the breath-taking landscapes, the spectacular mountain peaks, the white beaches, blue lagoons and especially to the multi-cultural population, their traditions and their smiles. An amalgamation of all these treasures in a carafe: Gold of Mauritius. Litchquor Ltd boasts 3 product ranges, namely the distinguished GOLD OF MAURITIUS, the fun-loving ROM CLUB, and the authentic BARRUM RESERVES. It’s main export markets are Europe and South East Asia.

Stirling Export House Ltd has been actively involved in the export of Mauritian Rums since early 2005 and a pioneer in the export bottled rum on a viable commercial basis.

Our vision remains to put Mauritius on the World Rum Map. Prior to our involvement in the Mauritian Rum export; not much was known about Mauritian Rum, let alone that Mauritius produces rum and was among the first islands to produce rum.

Today, our main export market is the UK as our top destination, followed by Germany, Holland and France. We do export to other EU countries as well as Scandinavia. Other parts of the world where we have exported include Africa, the Middle East, North America, Australia, Russia and Hong Kong.

Our philosophy is to build our export market together with our partners in order to attain long-term growth, profitability as well as support our local Mauritian economy and the hundreds of people involved in the industry from the sugarcane labourers to the factory workers.

In an effort to achieve our goals, we now operate from our offices in Mauritius as well as in the UK with bonded warehouse facility to supply our European partners with the minimum fuss and delay.

As well as the export of our branded products, we also export in bulk and can assist in sourcing other brands and products.
