ADDEYBB IS THECHAMPION AT LAST

All day long at Ascot, it was a case of deep-ground lovers need

only apply and one who certainly fit that category was Addeybb

(Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) and he duly carried off the feature G1 QIPCO

Champion S. Going through the conditions with an ease his rivals

could not match, last year=s runner-up finally registered a first

top-level success in Britain having annexed the G1 Ranvet S. and

G1 Queen Elizabeth S. during a Spring campaign in Australia.

Well-positioned in second by Tom Marquand throughout the

early stages, Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum=s 9-1 shot was

committed two from home and saw off Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent

{Fr}) to score by 2 1/4 lengths, with the 15-8 favourite Magical

(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) battling into third, half a length away. On a

day when his partner Hollie Doyle made the headlines,

Marquand was grabbing his own share but was quick to heap

praise elsewhere. AWhat a credit to [groom] Safid [Alam],

William and Maureen and the whole team at home. He=s gone

to Australia, he conquered down under and now he=s come back

up and he deserved that Group 1 so much,@ he said. AAll he=s

done is knock on the door, show he=s a champion and he=s never

got his real swansong but today=s he=s got it.@

KAMEKO TO TWEENHILLS IN 2021 This year=s G1 2000 Guineas scorer Kameko (Kitten=s

JoyBSweeter Still {Ire}, by Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire})) will retire to

Tweenhills Stud upon conclusion of his 3-year-old campaign this

year.

In addition to the 2000 Guineas, which he won in race record

time, Kameko won last year=s G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy. He

was fourth in three consecutive Group 1s this summer before

besting older horses in the G2 Joel S. and is set to run in the

Breeders= Cup.

Sheikh Fahad Al-Thani, chairman of Qatar Racing, said, AMy

brothers and I are delighted to own another superstar in

Kameko, whose record-breaking 2- and 3-year-old campaigns

will live long in our memory. We cannot wait to unveil him to

breeders.@

Trainer Andrew Balding added, AKameko is without doubt the

best horse I=ve trained. He has all the attributes of a top-class

miler and is a striking horse to look at. I feel very honoured to

have had the opportunity to train a horse of such class.@

It has been a long voyage to star of the show at this prestigious

meeting for Addeybb, who at one point in his career was

labelled unlucky for failing to get his favoured easy conditions on

several occasions. Kept in training

and carefully nurtured by William

Haggas, he proved that if you

hang around long enough you can

have things fall into place and

they did this time with the track

unraceable a fortnight ago.

During the summer, the veteran

had been rested but had shown

enough when defying a seven-

pound penalty in the Listed

Doonside Cup on his return over

this trip at Ayr on Sept. 19 to

confirm that he was very much a

player here. Twelve months ago,

the ground had not been bad

enough for him to get past Magical but on this occasion he had

first run on the mare who clearly struggled in the conditions.

With the sluggish-starting G1 Epsom Derby hero Serpentine

(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) soon rousted along to take the lead, the

widest-drawn Addeybb was granted a perfect lead with the July

5 G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB})

too fresh in behind. APCB@ had Skalleti positioned alongside that

Gosden runner after Ryan Moore had worked to get last year=s

heroine into a challenging

position in fifth. Turning for

home, Tom Marquand had

threats on either side but as

soon as he pushed the button

at the two-furlong pole the

contest was decided with only

the similarly ground-dependant

Skalleti and the race=s class act

Magical able to give meaningful

pursuit. AHe travelled like a true

good horse throughout the race

and to be honest when I started

getting going, I just bombed the

straight,@ Marquand explained.

AIt=s remarkable, I=ve never

ridden a horse like him. He goes over ground that=s as bad as

you can get and he makes it feel like you are on quick ground.

That=s why he=s so good on it.@

Addeybb, who first came to prominence when beating fellow

social climber Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper) in the Lincoln H. over

Doncaster=s straight mile in March 2018, looked to be going

places fast when adding the following month=s G2 Sandown Mile

to his tally. Denied a fair crack at this level due to drying ground

thereafter, it was not until June 2019 that he enjoyed another

slice of fortune when taking a competitive renewal of the

course-and-distance Listed Wolferton S. at the Royal meeting.

Winning the G3 Rose of Lancaster S. on heavy ground at

Haydock before beating all bar Magical in this, the bay went to

Australia and connections were rewarded for their enterprise as

he gave four pounds to Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ})--since

the winner of three Group 1 races including Saturday=s Caulfield

Cup--in both Rosehill=s Ranvet on Mar. 21 and the Queen

Elizabeth at Randwick on Apr. 11. On the latter occasion, when

the ground had deepened, he put 2 3/4 lengths between himself

and that filly but it was officially Agood@ as he trailed Lord North

(Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) when second in the June 17 G1 Prince of

Wales=s S.

William Haggas said, AHe has been absolutely fantastic. Since

he won the Wolferton last year and we put the cheek-pieces on,

he has just been so consistent. He was really on it today. He

looked fantastic beforehand, we thought, but he was grumpy

and difficult to saddle, which is a good sign for him. He has got

such a marvellous nature and this is tailor-made for him. We all

know that he loves this ground. We have finally won a

championship race with such a good horse.@

Pondering the winner=s journey, he added, AI said after

6-year-old One Master won the Foret for a third time that, if you

can keep them happy, sound and not abuse them when they are

young they will reward you when they are older. This is exactly

what he has done. Look at today--the first winner was six, the

second winner was six--if they are sound, healthy and keep their

enthusiasm, which he has done, then they can enjoy life. I think

that was his best-ever performance at the age of six.

AHe is great at home and Safid, who rides him every day, said

this morning that he would win and that he was really on form. I

have been not very well for a bit and then have been at the

sales when I have been better, so I have hardly seen him. I have

seen him at first lot but that is it really, so all credit to my team

at home and to Safid in particular, who dotes on this horse. I

think he is looking for another couple of months in Australia

next spring. If we can get back there, we will obviously consider

it. We also might consider Saudi Arabia as well, which is dirt but

QEII GLORY FOR THE REVENANT On a day when only the fittest survived, the suitably

dramatically-titled The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) as

expected made light of Ascot=s very testing ground to take the

G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. for France. Like the G1 QIPCO

Champion S. hero Addeybb (Ire)

(Pivotal {GB}) runner-up in his

respective race 12 months ago,

Al Asayl France=s chestnut had a

proven love of these conditions

in his armoury as well as

freshness having only

re-appeared this season a

fortnight previously when

winning the G2 Prix Daniel

Wildenstein at ParisLongchamp.

Sent off the 5-1 second favourite

to go one better than in 2019,

he was always in his comfort

zone tracking the moderate

early pace set by the 28-1 shot Roseman (Ire) (Kingman {GB}).

Tackling that outsider inside the final two furlongs, he had

edged ahead a furlong from home and answered Pierre-Charles

Boudot=s every call to gain a head verdict, with 3 1/4 lengths

back to the 8-11 favourite Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in

third. AToday I was very confident and he did it well on the

track,@ commented France=s revelation >PCB=. AHe was very

relaxed and when I asked him he gave me a nice, long turn of

foot and was courageous. He=s a super-tough horse.@

This was the one race on the

card that played host to a

potential superstar in the

unbeaten Palace Pier and

although he performed with

credit on going that played

against him, he was another in a

line of John Gosden stars who

failed to show their true colours

in specialist ground. He made his

move down the outer from rear

under Dettori to threaten The

Revenant, but was unable to

keep tabs on the 5-year-old who

had only the leader Roseman to

worry about late on. Nothing got

into contention from behind and it was ultimately left to The

Revenant to make it a clean sweep for geldings in the day=s

feature races open to them.

Trainer Francis Henri Graffard, whose 2020 has been highly

profitable thanks to this stable stalwart, the filly Watch Me (Fr)

(Olympic Glory {Ire}), sprinter Wooded (Ire) (Wootton Bassett

{GB}) and 3-year-old middle-distance performer In Swoop (Ire)

(Adlerflug {Ger}), deserves all the credit available in nurturing

the former Hugo Palmer trainee as Haggas has with Addeybb.

Three-from-four as a 3-year-old, he was gelded and returned to

reward that decision by annexing Saint-Cloud=s Listed Prix

Altipan and G3 Prix Edmond Blanc last Spring. Brought here after

subsequent wins in the G2 Badener Meile and last year=s

renewal of the Daniel Wildenstein, he found only King of Change

(GB) (Farhh {GB}) too strong here and his subsequent absence

until Arc Saturday was due to COVID-19 wiping out the early

part of the calendar.

AI had him ready to run in the Spring, but when lockdown

came I decided to send him out to grass and he had a good

spell,@ Graffard explained. AI had to wait until the Daniel

Wildenstein for his comeback and he was only 80% fit for that

race. I was a little bit stressed that I had to work him quite hard

in the run-up, but everything was building to today. It all worked

out because he is a very good horse with a lot of heart. It went

exactly as we had planned, with him settled close to the pace.@

Gosden said of Palace Pier, AHe pulled off a shoe leaving the

gate. He was trying to run the whole race with one shoe off and

Frankie said he was not able to change leads and the horse

wasn=t able to handle the ground.@

DOYLE AT THE DOUBLE IN THE SPRINT Not content to rest on her laurels, rider-of-the-moment Hollie

Doyle claimed a career-best success when guiding last month=s

G1 Haydock Sprint Cup runner-up Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB})

to a dramatic success in Saturday=s Qipco British Champions

Sprint S. at Ascot. Hambleton Racing Partnership=s veteran

chestnut, who had previously claimed a first pattern-race

triumph in The Curragh=s Aug. 8 G3 Phoenix Sprint S., broke like

greased lightning from the gates and was in command under a

tight hold until allowed a measure of rein at halfway. Looking

certain to be swamped when a host of rivals threatened from all

angles approaching the eighth pole, the 16-1 chance found

Doyle at her maximum when fellow old stager and 2016 third

Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) gained an edge in the closing stages

and rallied gamely in a ding-dong tussle to pluck a nose victory

from the jaws of defeat in the final stride. Lael Stable=s One

Master (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) finished with her usual gusto

to edge Art Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) for third.

AI didn=t think I=d won, so to have had the result we have was

incredible and I=m in a state of shock right now,@ said a delighted

Doyle after securing a first triumph at the highest level. AWe had

a really good old battle with [G1 July Cup hero and eventual

fifth] Oxted from the three-furlong pole and I thought I=d be

doing well to hold on like I did, but he is such a game horse. He

is incredible and has got quicker with age. When we first got

him, he was running over 10 furlongs [for Andre Fabre] in France

and didn=t show a whole lot of speed, but the further we

dropped him back, the quicker he has got.

AThis isn=t about me, it=s about [trainer] Archie Watson, who

has campaigned this horse unbelievably and no one else would

have won a Group 1 with this horse. It is a dream come true, a

massive dream come true, especially on this horse and everyone

in the yard adores him. My aim, at the start of the year, was to

ride a group winner and I always said a Group 1 one day, but I

didn=t think it would come this year. I don=t get too carried away,

but I=m a bit delusional as to what is going on at the moment as

it has all been a bit of a whirlwind.@

Watson, who was not on course for his biggest day yet, said,

AThat is my first Group 1 winner and it is absolutely amazing. He

is some horse and there aren=t many Group 1 horses that are

picked up for ,45,000 at a horses in training sale. He has just

improved throughout the year.@

As referenced, Glen Shiel was picked out of last year=s Goffs

UK Spring Horses-In-Training Sale and Watson said, AA lot of

credit needs to go to Tom Biggs, who spotted him at the sale

with me--he buys all these horses and puts me in the privileged

position to train them.@

AWaiting on the photo-finish was not good for me, but I

thought he just held on,@ Watson added. AAs it was literally a

bob of the heads, you can never be confident in a situation like

that. While I=m delighted to give Hollie her first Group 1, I=m also

delighted for his owners Hambleton Racing as they have been

big supporters of mine. Everything has gone fantastic today and

he will have another holiday now. I think straight tracks really

play to his strengths, so he won=t be going to the Breeders= Cup

or Hong Kong. We will look at all those six-furlong races in

Europe for him. I hope there are still more big wins in him, there

will not be too much difference in him from being a 6-year-old

to a 7-year-old. He has been in such good form and it has been

great to strike while the iron has been hot.@

Popular veteran Brando, contesting a fifth straight renewal

and registering his best effort in this event, rolled back the years

and provided a flashback of all his old sparkle in getting to within

a pixel of springing an 80-1 shocker. Jockey Tom Eaves enjoyed

mixed emotions, but was nonetheless delighted with the

performance and said, AYou are always gutted finishing second,

but he has run a stormer of a race. It was a bob of the heads and

I=m delighted, but gutted at the same time. He has been running

okay, he ran well [when third in the rescheduled G3 Bengough

S.] at York last Saturday and that probably put him right for this.

York has never been his sort of track, but he likes it here on this

big, stiff track. It is a great training performance.@

(Timeless Moment) strutted her stuff at the top table in Chris

Wright=s blue-and-yellow silks and the music supremo has found

a jewel to match that luminary=s achievements after David

Menuisier incumbent Wonderful Tonight (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire})

backed up a career best in ParisLongchamp=s G1 Prix de

Royallieu earlier this month with a game victory in Saturday=s

G1 Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares S. at Ascot. The bay

sophomore was in receipt of a six-pound pull from her elders

and made that weight-for-age allowance tell from the outset,

occupying a forward berth after a slick departure in the

12-furlong contest. Easing to the front with three furlongs

remaining, the 4-1 favourite was committed when stoked up by

William Buick at the top of the straight and stayed on

relentlessly under a drive inside the final quarter mile to deny

the hat trick-seeking Hollie Doyle, aboard G1 Preis von Europa

and G1 Prix Vermeille third Dame Malliot (GB) (Champs Elysees

{GB}), by 2 1/2 lengths. Coolmore=s G1 Irish Oaks placegetter

Passion (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) stayed on well from mid division to

finish a length back in third.

AI am so tired as I think I pushed harder than William [Buick]

riding the filly and I am speechless, absolutely speechless,@

admitted David Menuisier after registering a first premium-level

tally on British soil. AShe is a champion, I feel so lucky and

blessed and I am absolutely thrilled. We bought her at the sales

as a yearling for next to nothing and here she is winning her

second Group 1 in two weeks. We know that she is very good

and the only question mark was whether she had recuperated

from the Arc weekend or not. I hadn=t, but I am glad she did. She

is top-class all round, she is easy to train and as tough as

anything that is tough. She is getting better and better, and

there is still some improvement to come. She is still a tad keen

early on so, once she really knows how to settle, I think she can

go up a notch again. You never know, especially with fillies,

whether they are going to train on or not, but we wanted to

keep her as a 4-year-old to target the [G1 Prix de l=] Arc [de

Triomphe] next year. We nearly ran her in the Arc this year, and

I think she would have run a stormer, but she wasn=t a Group 1

winner yet. Now she is so the sky is the limit.@

AThis filly is rock solid, she is just straightforward and David

was very confident beforehand,@ added Buick. AShe is proven on

the ground and she stays well so she ticks a lot of boxes and I

have been looking forward to riding this filly all week. She was

out on her own all the way up the straight and it=s a long,

daunting straight no matter what you=re riding. Her form is

there for everyone to see and she won the Royallieu, which is a

mile-and-six, on ground very similar to today. The race panned

out beautifully for her, she got a nice bit of cover for the first

half of the race and I always felt she was in a good rhythm and

she did nothing but keep going. She has a lot of class, she has

the stamina and the will to win to go with it.@

Continued Buick, AShe has beaten some really good fillies very

well and, when conditions are there to suit her, I can=t see why

she shouldn=t scale further heights. She is very effective on soft

ground and maybe other horses aren=t as effective as her, but

she is by Le Havre so she might be bred to go on that ground. I

have been riding for David Menuisier quite regularly and his

horses have been going well all year. I have been very fortunate

to get a few winners from David and to get on this filly was very

special.@

Try as she might, Hollie Doyle was unable to maintain her

100% start to the day and was obliged to settle for second place

after giving her mount Dame Malliot every chance of repeating

the partnership=s success in July=s G2 Princess of Wales=s S. at

Newmarket. On the podium once again, she commented, ADame

Malliot has run really well. She was a little bit keen early on, as

expected, but has done nothing wrong in defeat. I followed the

winner the whole way round and thought I had the perfect

pitch. Will [Buick] pushed the button and took a few lengths out

of me off the home turn and she just stayed on at the one pace.@

Ascot=s rain-affected British Champions Day opened with the

,300,000 Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup over the

best part of two miles and it was Hollie Doyle, fresh from setting

a record number of winners earlier in the week, who celebrated

success with a wide-margin tally aboard Barbary Lions 5=s

4-year-old gelding Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}). The Alan King

trainee=s previous best came in July=s Listed Tapster S. at

Haydock and he earned his place in this line-up coming back off

an eighth--behind the reopposing Fujaira Prince (Ire) (Pivotal

{GB})--in York=s Aug. 22 Ebor H. and a Sept. 11 Salisbury

conditions score over 14 furlongs last time. Trueshan found a

comfortable rhythm just off the pace in sixth, but slipped one

spot as 11-10 pick Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire})

improved position at halfway.

Making rapid headway on the home turn, the 11-1 chance

quickened into second entering the final quarter mile and

powered ever clear under minimal urging once seizing control

soon after to hit the line an impressive 7 1/2 lengths ahead of

dual G1 Irish St Leger heroine Search For A Song (Ire) (Galileo

{Ire}), with old foe Fujaira Prince holding the closing pack for

third. Stradivarius was unable to land a blow and finished 12th

of 13.

AI travelled all over them and that was incredible,@ exclaimed a

jubilant Doyle. AHe doesn=t like being crowded so I switched him

at the three-[furlong] pole and the further I went, the better he

went. He was almost overtravelling with me and I had to stay

out a bit wide for the first three furlongs, but luckily I managed

to slot in there and got a nice position outside Stradivarius. He

was tanking with me and he went through the ground like a

tractor. The pace was reasonable, but he was travelling and he

felt like he was hacking round there. I switched my fellow round

horses as they said he didn=t like getting crowded in the Ebor

and when I pushed the button, he responded. It is testing and it

is wet, heavy ground and hard work. I rode him first time at

Wolverhampton, and that was a bit of a surprise, and then he

bolted up at Ffos Las. I=ve not been on him since so I=m really

grateful for the owners and Alan putting me back on him today.

He is a proper horse, he won his first two starts and I=ve always

liked him. I=m not going to lie, I didn=t realise he would be up to

Group 2 level like today. I=m really happy people are seeing me

as just a jockey, and not a female jockey, and shout out to Alan

King because he is some trainer.@

Assistant trainer Dan Horsford added, AHe=s been progressive

all year and has improved for the step up to two miles. Who

knows where he ends up from here, but it will be all the Cup

races next year and I would think [any] hurdling [plans] will be

shelved. It=s unbelievable, it looked like Hollie jumped in two

furlongs out and she is still unbeaten on him. She gets on very

well with him, but it just didn=t happen for him in the Ebor for

whatever reason. It=s been a cracking year and long may it last.@

Reflecting on the performance of Stradivarius, who was not

unduly punished once his chance had evaporated, trainer John

Gosden said, AThe ground was too deep and too heavy and he

hated it. Frankie [Dettori] thought he pulled his shoes off. He

was in good form, but the ground was very deep down there

and he would have probably been better running on the inner

[jumps] track.@ Dettori added, AI was never there and there is

not much else I can say.@

AHe=s been growing all year, so that=s why he hadn=t run until the

Dewhurst. It=s a Group 1 and we had to give it a try and we were

happy with his run. He took all the travelling very well. He=ll be

aimed at the Guineas.@ Jockey Kevin Manning added, AHe ran

well in the Dewhurst and was only beaten eight lengths. He

would have come on plenty from the run and it was a good

training performance to turnaround a week later. He stays well,

but he has plenty of pace. I felt if I could get a length or two off

the bend it might be just good enough. He has a lovely attitude

and is a nice horse going forward.@

Kameko was a first British Classic winner for jockey Oisin

Murphy, who said, AI felt from the very beginning that this could

be a special horse. He=s the perfect model--he has size,

durability and a great character. To ride, he has super balance, a

great turn of foot and a good mind--you can put him anywhere

in a race. He=s a machine.@

Kameko will run at the Breeders= Cup and on his return to

Britain will be paraded for breeders, along with other Tweenhills

stallions, at Longholes Stud in Newmarket during the Tattersalls

December Mare Sale. His 2021 stud fee and syndication plans

will be announced in due course.

PLENTY OF POSITIVES AS TATTERSALLS

OCTOBER ENDS A fortnight of selling at Park Paddocks for the Tattersalls

October Yearling Sale drew to a close on Saturday morning with

a small Book 4 offering. The

session added 153,000gns to the

coffers for 42 sold (65%). While

the average dipped 15% to

3,655gns, the median was up 14%

to 2,500gns. A pair of fillies by

Equiano (Fr) (lots 2007 and 2030)

topped trade at 11,000gns and

10,000gns, respectively, when

bought by Nick Bradley

Racing/George Boughey and

Rabbah Bloodstock.

Tattersalls October Books 1

through 4 cumulatively saw 1,816

yearlings go through the ring, with

1,507 sold (83%, up slightly from

last year) for 138,268,200gns (-

13%). Unsurprisingly in the midst of a global pandemic, the

average dipped 13% to 91,751gns while the median was down

16% at 42,000gns. The true talking point of the sale was the

second week of trade, where Books 2 and 3 were extraordinarily

strong considering the circumstances. Book 2 saw figures remain

steady with plenty of notable results for pinhookers and

breeders alike, while figures rose year-on-year for Book 3.

Upon the conclusion of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale,

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, AIf ever there were

any doubt as to the unique status of Newmarket as the hub of

European racing and breeding it has been dispelled over the

past two weeks of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The

heritage of Newmarket is a priceless commodity and has

without doubt played a huge part in the strength of the market

over the past two weeks.

AThis town has an infrastructure and workforce dedicated to

the Thoroughbred industry and as such is uniquely placed to

cope with the obstacles and challenges thrown at us all by the

global COVID pandemic. Ever since the lockdown in March, the

industry and the town have worked together in full compliance

horses could be cared for at the same time as ensuring safe

working environments for everyone at all times.

vibrant a market as possible at both the forthcoming Autumn

Horses in Training Sale and the December Sales which will bring

an extraordinary Tattersalls sales season to a close."

FIRST-SEASON SIRESWITH RUNNERS

ARQANA RELEASES AUTUMN CATALOGUES Arqana has published the catalogues for its Autumn Sale,

which will be held in two stages next month.

The first catalogue comprises 254 flat-bred yearlings which will

go under the hammer on Nov. 14. This catalogue has been

organized in partnership with Osarus, which opted to cancel its

traditional September Yearling Sale in light of the COVID-19

pandemic and re-route its entries to this sale and Arqana=s

October Yearling Sale.

Following a two-day break for inspections, 200 flat and

National Hunt horses in training will be offered on Nov. 16. Eye-

catching flat offerings include this year=s G3 Deutsches St Leger

scorer Quian (Ger) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) (lot 424); and Aga

Khan 3-year-olds Irshad (Fr) (Raven=s Pass) (lot 393) and Vardani

(Fr) (Charm Spirit {Ire}) (lot 394).

The focus will switch entirely to the jumps on Nov. 17 and 18

with a day of stores and a day of National Hunt-bred yearlings.

Beauty Generation (NZ) (Road To Rock {Aus}) and Hot King

Prawn (Aus) (Denman {Aus}), two of the five highest-rated

horses in Hong Kong, are the heavyweights in a pair of Group 2

races Sunday at Sha Tin Racecourse, but face younger and well-

handicapped rivals who figure to take all the beating.

On a rating of 130, the 8-year-old Beauty Generation remains

Hong Kong=s top-rated galloper and he will--once again--have to

deal with rising superstar Golden Sixty (Aus) (Medaglia d=Oro),

this time in the Oriental Watch Sha Tin Trophy H. (1600m). The

two rivals met in the G3 Celebration Cup H. over 1400 metres

Sept. 27, and, in receipt of 17 pounds from the dual Horse of the

Year, Golden Sixty kicked home 1 3/4 lengths best, with

Champion=s Way (Aus) (Hinchinbrook {Aus}) dead-heating for

second. Golden Sixty figures a warm favorite, but the dual

G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile winner figures to improve back

over his pet trip and with a seven-pound shift in the weights

with the once-beaten Golden Sixty.

Hot King Prawn returns to action as the 133-pound king of the

hill in the G2 Premier Bowl H. (1200m). Though his lone victory

last season came in a Class 1 handicap, the 6-year-old gray

gelding just missed to stablemate Beat the Clock (Aus)

EVEREST NEVER A BRIDGETOO FAR FOR CONFIDENT LES

Randwick trainer Les Bridge has been telling all and sundry for

months that Classique Legend (Not A Single Doubt) would win

the $15 million The TAB Everest and his prophecy came true in

thrilling style on Saturday. Bridge took an unconventional

training approach to fulfil his prediction with Classique Legend

and it proved a masterstroke with the grey powering to victory

in the richest turf race on the planet for Hong Kong-based

owner Bon Ho. While many of his sprinting peers were enjoying

time out during the winter, Classique Legend had been kept in

work with a winning outing in the Listed June S. to keep him

ticking along. Bridge then started to get more serious and sent

the 5-year-old to land the G2 The Shorts last month and a

runner-up finish in the G2 Premiere S. earlier this month had

him strip at his very best on Saturday.

AI=ve been telling everyone for three months he would win.

One of my greatest friends was Percy Sykes, who I spent a lot of

time with, and he said it=s all in the genes,@ Bridge said.

ASome horses just get more of the good genes and I=m just

repeating his words. This horse had got a girth on him that deep

and a V8 motor, he=s unbelievable.@

Classique Legend has twice been booked on a flight to Hong

Kong, but in a year turned upside down by the COVID-19

outbreak he remained in Bridge=s care.

AHe=ll still probably go, but we=ll see what happens--

we kidnapped him last time,@ he said.

Among Bridge=s finest training triumphs has been

G1 Melbourne Cup success with Kensei (NZ) (Blarney Kiss {USA})

and a G1 Golden Slipper S. with Sir Dapper (Vain) and while he

considers Classique Legend his best horse, first place in his heart

goes to his multiple Group 1 winner Hot Danish (Nothin Leica

Dane).

AThe horse I got the most pleasure out of in my life was Hot

Danish because my wife was dying of cancer and every time that

horse won it gave her a lift so there will never be a horse to

replace Hot Danish in my sentiments,@ he said.

Love at First Sight Bred by Wallings Bloodstock, Classique Legend was offered by

Tyreel Stud at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale and was bought by

Carmel Size on behalf of Ho for $400,000.

AHe means the world to me and I=ve been obsessed with him

since I first laid eyes on him. It=s just so special and I=m so proud

of the horse,@ Size said.

ALes has been so confident, very bullish for such a long time.

He=s had an unorthodox preparation so what a marvel Les is,

he=s a legend. The horse has been on a flight to Hong Kong twice

so the Gods have shone on me and he=s come back.@

Classique Legend settled back in the body of the field, but when

rider Kerrin McEvoy got him to the outside he mowed down his

rivals to beat Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) by 2.5l with Gytrash

Trekking (Street Cry {Ire}) finished fourth ahead of Haut Brion

Her (Zoustar), Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and a

weakening Nature Strip (Nicconi).

AWe jumped out and I got on the back of Trekking and just had

to ride my race. At the 600 (metre mark) the leaders were well

in front, but full credit to my horse, he was really able to power

home,@ McEvoy said.

AHe did a marvellous job and Les has done a great job and

Carmel has looked after him like a baby. It=s been fantastic and

it's an unbelievable feeling to win another one.@

McEvoy, of course, won the first two editions of The Everest

with Redzel (Snitzel) and stayed with him last year when Nash

Rawiller rode Classique Legend into a sixth.

AI was lucky to team up with Redzel and last year was a tough

call and this horse was a bit unlucky, but he=s come back even

better so it=s extra special.@

BUBBLY TO FLOW IN ZAHRA HOUSEHOLD

Mark Zahra had a pretty good idea how he was going to

celebrate his first G1 Caulfield Cup victory after partnering the

resilient mare Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) to victory.

The Victorian jockey won the race to partner the quirky Verry

Elleegant last month after regular rider James McDonald stayed

in Sydney due to COVID-19 travel restrictions and it=s since

proved to be a match made in heaven.

Zahra got his first feel of the Chris Waller-trained 5-year-old in

the G1 Turnbull S. and they hit it off immediately with a lead-up

win and it was more of the same at Caulfield where they

repelled the challenge of the topweight Anthony Van Dyck (Ire)

(Galileo {Ire}).

AI=ll be telling the missus to put 10 bottles of champagne on ice

and I suppose all we can do is drink them together,@ Zahra said.

Zahra earned a celebratory drink or three after a grand ride on

Verry Elleegant, who has now added the Caulfield Cup to a

record that already featured Group 1 success in the Turnbull S.,

Tancred S., Winx S., Australian Oaks and the Vinery Stud S.

Verry Elleegant was midfield in the early running with Zahra

keen to keep her away from the fence.

AWhen she gets to 2400 metres it=s about getting her in a

rhythm and I wasn=t in a bad spot, but the stablemate wanted to

put me back on the fence which she didn=t like,@ he said.

AAll I wanted to do was to get to the outside and I gave her a

rev up on the turn and, like I say, she=s very tough and wasn=t

going to be beaten.@

Verry Elleegant got the front and then had to withstand the

challenge of Anthony Van Dyck and her fighting qualities were

evident in the closing 100 metres when she pinned her ears

back and stayed on strongly to land the major prize.

AIt=s a great feeling and she=s so tough, the other horse joined

her and she dug deep and to win a Caulfield Cup is amazing,@

Zahra said.

First Taste It also plugged one of the few remaining holes on Waller=s

CV with his first taste of success in the Caulfield Cup.

AIt can=t be stressed enough what a big team effort it has been

effort it has been,@ Waller=s Melbourne representative Jo Taylor

said. ASydney has done a fantastic job to get her down here and

then our team here as well, who have worked tirelessly and

certainly deserve a big result like this so well done to everyone

involved. She=s just kept maturing and you=d imagine she will

continue to do that.@

Verry Elleegant will now attempt to follow in the path of

another great Kiwi-bred staying mare in Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm

{USA}), who completed the major staying double in 2001.

AHopefully, this year we will go on to a G1 Melbourne Cup and

the further she goes, the stronger she gets. She is an incredible

endurance athlete and Mark did a great job,@ Taylor said.

AAt one stage it looked like she was going to be caught on the

fence, but he made sure she stayed off and he kept her out of

trouble. She was certainly very tough.

AChris will be ecstatic and he's so deserving. It=s a race that=s

eluded us until now so it certainly means a lot.@

Runner-up Anthony Van Dyck=s run was full of merit after

being forced to drop back from a wide barrier while The Chosen

One (NZ) (Savabeel) ran out of his skin at long odds to claim the

third prize.

Prince Of Arran (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}) has placed in the last two

editions of the G1 Melbourne Cup and he showed by coming

from last to finish fourth that he is in the right order to perhaps

go all the way this year.

New Zealand=s Queen of the Turf Melody Belle (NZ)

(Commands) reveled in all the pomp and ceremony of a Group 1

day when she took her collection of elite titles to 12 with a

successful defence of her Livamol Classic crown.

Melody Belle returned from an unsuccessful winter trip to

Sydney to land the G1 Windsor Park Plate on the second day of

the Hastings spring carnival and she produced an equally

impressive win in Saturday=s Livamol.

The 6-year-old unleashed a devastating home stretch sprint to

sail clear and confirm what trainer Jamie Richards had been

thinking for much of the week.

AShe loves it here and has prepared well. She worked super on

Thursday and I said they couldn=t beat her here last time in the

Windsor Park they=d have struggled this time as she has

improved,@ Richards said.

AShe was explosive and I don=t like to say too much ahead of

these races, but she hadn=t put a foot wrong. She=s a great mare

and she=s nowhere near finished yet.@

Melody Belle=s victory continued the outstanding run in Group

1 events Richards has enjoyed since taking over the Matamata

stable.

AWe might look back in 10 years and think how lucky we were

to have her, Avantage, Te Akau Shark and Probabeel all at the

same time,@ he said.

AAll the staff have done a magnificent job and I would like to

give them a big thank you. They work from 3 or 3:30a.m. in the

morning until five at night and never complain. They have all

been terrific.@

Beyond Doubt Melody Belle settled in the last quartet and rider Troy Harris

bided his time before he urged the mare around the field 700

metres from home.

They were widest into the straight and once balanced Melody

Belle lengthened stride to quickly put the issue beyond doubt.

AIt was a no pain ride and once she got to the outside she just

let rip,@ Richards said.

She is raced by the Fortuna Melody Belle Syndicate managed

by John Galvin.

AShe was imperious. She=ll probably go to the G1 Captain Cook

S. and there=s enough time for her to have 10 days or two weeks

in the paddock first before we go to the big stage at Trentham,@

Galvin said.

Melody Belle had 2.8l on stablemate Avantage (Fastnet Rock)

at the finish with Vadavar (Fr) (Redoute=s Choice) coming from

well back for third with Dolcetto (NZ) (Per Incanto {USA}) next

home.

AShe went to sleep in the gates and it all worked out from the

jump. I was pretty happy where I was and as soon as I pulled out

and got to the middle of the track she was far too good,@ Harris

said. AThis is very special to me.@

Harris= father Noel won the Livamol three times with Secret

Seal (NZ) (Imperial Seal {GB}) in 1987, Castletown (NZ) (One

Pound Sterling {GB}) in 1991 and Princess Coup (Encosta De

When Kiaran McLaughlin announced his retirement earlier this

spring, Shadwell Stable=s Vice President and General Manager

Rick Nichols already had a trainer=s name in the back of his mind

who could potentially fill the void.

AActually, it was kind of a no-brainer,@ Nichols said. AThrough

Kiaran, I got to know Todd [Pletcher] quite well and always had

tremendous respect for him. I would have always liked for him

to train for us, but since Todd and Kiaran were such good

friends, it was a line that I didn=t want to cross, and Todd had

similar feelings.@

Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum=s high-powered global

operation and McLaughlin enjoyed a tremendous run together

through the years campaigning standouts such as Horse of the

Year Invasor (Arg) (Candy Stripes), GI Belmont S. winner Jazil

The bay, favored at 8-5 while seeking her first win since a

Pletcher added, AKiaran was always very excited about training

for Shadwell and holds the whole team and Sheikh Hamdan in

the highest regard. I was fortunate enough to get a positive

endorsement from Kiaran and touched base with Rick Nichols

when Kiaran decided to pursue another career. It=s a great

organization and they have nothing but the highest quality of

horses.@

The seven-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer has hit the

ground running for his new client, led by the GI Breeders= Cup

Juvenile Turf-bound >TDN Rising Star= Mutasaabeq (Into

Mischief).

The $425,000 KEENOV graduate, the first foal from Downside

Scenario (Scat Daddy), earned his >Rising Star= badge with a

flashy debut victory going 5 1/2 furlongs at Saratoga Aug. 8,

good for a very strong 84 Beyer Speed Figure.

He had already tipped his hand in the mornings and earned

some awfully high praise from his two-time GI Kentucky Derby-

winning trainer.

AOne of his gate works (Click for XBTV video of Mustasaabeq=s

July 19 gate breeze) in particular was one of the best I=ve seen

from any of our 2-year-olds,@ Pletcher said. AWe were

anticipating a good debut.@

Following a well-beaten third behind the unbeaten division

leader Jackie=s Warrior (Maclean=s Music) in the GI Runhappy

Hopeful S. Sept. 7, however, Pletcher decided to call an audible.

Spoiler alert: it went quite well.

Mutasaabeq shared the bullet for five furlongs over Saratoga=s

Oklahoma training turf course with the 3-year-old No Word

(Silent Name {Jpn}), who subsequently posted a game runner-up

finish in the GI Belmont Derby Invitational S.

AHe worked head and head with him,@ Pletcher said. AI said,

>OK, I think we know what to do now.=@

Mutasaabeq handled the surface switch with aplomb and

punched his ticket to >Future Stars Friday= in style, slingshotting

his way from last to first after missing the break in Keeneland=s

GII Dixiana Bourbon S. Oct. 4. He was the 2-1 favorite that day

and was piloted by McLaughlin=s aforementioned jockey, Luis

Saez.

AI=ve watched [the Bourbon] about 20 times already,@ Nichols

said with a laugh. AWe=re extremely excited. He=s such a nice

horse.@

AI was a little worried when he was out the back door early

on,@ Pletcher said. AHe turned in a very impressive turn of foot

to really inhale the field in a hurry. He=s come out of it really well

and it=s great that he has a win over the course. He=s a

gentleman around the barn and is a pleasure to train.@

Mutasaabeq, bred in Kentucky by BlackRidge Stables LLC,

returned to the worktab for his Breeders= Cup preparations with

a four-furlong breeze in :48.75 (4/63) over the Belmont training

track Thursday.

Favored at 4-5, the 2-year-old filly was ridden early to secure a

good spot on the outside in second, gained a narrow advantage

as they bunched up rounding the far turn, and responded well

to some left-handed encouragement by Hall of Famer Johnny

Velazquez in the stretch to kick off her career with a promising

victory. A race like the $100,000 Tempted S. going a one-turn

mile at Aqueduct Nov. 6 could be a potential landing spot for her

next start.

Malathaat=s ultra-talented dam Dreaming of Julia (A.P. Indy), a

Stonestreet homebred and Pletcher-trained >TDN Rising Star=

herself, registered a career high in Belmont=s GI Frizette S. at

two. Her resume also includes a 21 3/4-length victory in the

GII Gulfstream Oaks, good for an astronomical 114 Beyer Speed

Figure, a runner-up finish in the GI Mother Goose S. and a third-

place finish in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies. The daughter

of MGISW Dream Rush (Wild Rush) was an unlucky fourth in the

GI Kentucky Oaks.

This is also the same female family of MGSW and >TDN Rising

Star= Dream Pauline (Tapit) and stakes-winning young sire

Atreides (Medaglia d'Oro).

Recent GI Woodward H. winner and >TDN Rising Star= Global

Campaign is bred on the same Curlin over A.P. Indy cross as

Malathaat.

AI was really excited that we got the opportunity to train her

because she was my first-round draft choice of the [2019]

Keeneland September Sale,@ Pletcher said of Malathaat.

AI loved that filly as a yearling. We put together a group to try

to buy her and we were in the hunt, but we didn=t quite get it

done. Her mother was a special talent, a very gifted filly. This

filly is a slightly bigger and slightly stronger version of her

mother. It=s exciting that she was able to break her maiden

going seven furlongs and you would certainly anticipate that

she=ll get even better stretching out. She=s all class.@

Other Pletcher-trained Shadwell runners to get their picture

taken thus far include: Prairie Wings (f, 3, by Tapit) ($800,000

KEESEP yearling), a Saratoga maiden winner in an off-the-turfer

Aug. 27 and grassy Keeneland allowance runner-up Oct. 2; and

Ashiham (c, 3, by Tapit) ($800,000 KEESEP yearling), a Saratoga

maiden winner going 1 1/8 miles Aug. 21. The streaking Tatweej

(c, 4, by Tapit) ($2.5-million KEESEP yearling) graduated for

Shadwell and Pletcher at Gulfstream July 25 and has since added

a pair of allowance tallies in South Florida for owner Alshareef

Hazzaa Shaker Alabdali while remaining under Pletcher=s

shedrow.

Shadwell, a perennial leading buyer at Keeneland September,

picked up nine yearlings, led by a $1.6-million daughter of

Medaglia d=Oro, for a total of $5.42 million at last month=s sale.

Pletcher currently has 12 horses in training for Shadwell and

another six residing at his father J.J. Pletcher=s Payton Training

Center in Ocala, Florida. Shadwell has allocated 15 yearlings of

He continued, "She's great out of the gate. She's tenacious,

and that's what you need to win some races. Gotta be quick out

of the gate. Manny [Franco] did a great job getting out of the

gate, and that was the key to the win."

Franco added, AShe=s happy when she=s on the lead. She

showed it today. She=s a nice filly.@

Venetian Harbor rounded out the bottom half of the exacta in

her last three trips to the post behind some heavy hitters. She

was second to the mighty Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil) in the

GIII Fantasy S. at Oaklawn May 1, second to Speech (Mr

Speaker) in the GI Central Bank Ashland S. July 11 and second

behind >TDN Rising Star= Gamine (Into Mischief) in the

GI Longines Test S. last time Aug. 8.

Pedigree Notes:

Ashford sire Munnings nabbed the Raven Run exacta with

3-year-old daughters facing each other for the first time. Both

Venetian Harbor and Finite are graded stakes winners of 2020

and join other current top sophomore filly and fellow graded

winner Bonny South in the Speightstown son=s count of

17 graded winners and 42 black-type winners overall.

Interestingly, Finite and Bonny South are both out of Tapit

daughters, but Venetian Harbor is out of a daughter of Street

Cry (Ire). Like Munnings, the late Street Cry had gotten plenty of

good sons, but it was his daughters who really seemed to shine.

As a broodmare sire, Street Cry has 77 black-type winners,

including last year=s champion older male Vino Rosso (Curlin).

Venetian Harbor is the second foal out of her dam, whose only

foal since was a colt born this year by Oscar Performance. She

was bred back to both Constitution and Speightstown for next

term. Venetian Harbor=s fourth dam is Hall of Famer Safely Kept

Warren=s Showtime surged late to provide a milestone 1,000th

career victory for Craig Lewis, who also trained the winner=s sire

and dam. She was in no hurry in fifth through sharp fractions of

:22.50 and :45.42. She began to launch with a four-wide bid on

the far turn and kept on coming in the stretch to get there in

dramatic fashion.

Already a four-time stakes winner, including Santa Anita=s

course-and-distance China Doll S. in March, Warren=s Showtime

followed a victory in the Melair S. versus Cal-breds on the main

track June 21 with a pair of third-place finishes in the GII San

Clemente S. July 25 and GI Del Mar Oaks last time Aug. 22.

Pedigree Notes:

Warren=s Showtime is the flagship runner for California sire

Clubhouse Ride, who notched his first graded win as a sire with

Sam-Son Farm=s Count Again (Awesome Again) will try to add

his third win of the season in Sunday=s 12-furlong GI Northern

Dancer Turf S. at Woodbine. A second-out winner going a mile

for trainer Neil Howard at Keeneland last fall, the gelding won

his sole start for Kent Sweezey in a Tampa allowance in April

before finishing third for current trainer Gail Cox in an

8 1/2-furlong Woodbine optional claimer in June. Just missing in

second behind Woodbridge (Langfuhr) while stretching to

10 panels at the Etobicoke oval Aug. 29, Count Again closed with

purpose to take his latest start in the GIII Singspiel S. Sept. 19.

Luis Contreras, aboard for the bay=s three most recent starts,

returns for the gelding=s Grade I debut.

AHe ran great,@ said Cox of Count Again=s Singspiel

performance. AIt was exactly what he wanted to do, which is to

go a distance. A mile-and-a-sixteenth was always a little short

for him. So, with the added distance..he was really good. He did

win pretty easily.@

She continued, AHe=s a very nice horse. I know anyone that=s

trained him has really liked him. He just had this and that which

had bothered him, which led to him having some time off. He

needed to get really good and comfortable. He seems to like

training [at Woodbine]. He does a fair amount of training on the

dirt here, but he=s been happy, and has come out of his races

really well.@

Cox and Sam-Son are also represented in the Northern Dancer

Turf by Say the Word (More Than Ready). Third to stablemate

Count Again in the Singspiel, the dark bay was sixth in the 2018

Queen=s Plate, going on to finish second in the Canadian Triple

Crown=s final jewel, the Breeders= S. Prior to the Singspiel, the

gelding closed to win a 9 1/2-furlong Saratoga optional claimer

Aug. 14.

AHe was closing ground [in the Singspiel] and he didn=t have

the easiest of trips,@ said Cox. AI think he=ll love this distance.

He=s another one that we had to send away to run farther. And

that worked out. But he needs the distance and he doesn=t like

the Tapeta. He was originally set to run on it, but he just didn=t

like it.@

Staghawk Stables= Nakamura (Animal Kingdom), stakes-placed

at three, reeled off three consecutive wins for Graham Motion

last season, including his most recent victory in an 11-furlong

optional claiming test at Saratoga in August. Despite failing to

return to the winner=s circle in three remaining starts in 2019,

he finished runner-up in the 12-panel GIII Sycamore S. at

Keeneland in October. This term, the Maryland-bred came

home third in both Keeneland=s GII Elkhorn S. and an 11-furlong

optional claimer at Saratoga Aug. 16 before finishing fourth--

beaten two lengths--in the Singspiel. Accompanied by Kazushi

Kimura last time, the rider gets the return call this time.

TRIO POISED FOR REMATCH IN E.P. TAYLOR

The top three finishers in this summer=s GII Dance Smartly S.

regroup in Sunday=s GI E.P. Taylor S. at Woodbine. Leading the

fray in the Aug. 15 event, Augustin Stable=s Theodora B.

(Ghostzapper) used the 10-furlong test as a stepping stone to a

front-running victory in the 10 1/2-panel TVG S. at Kentucky

Downs Sept. 15. Three for four this season--the sole off-the-

board finish was registered on Woodbine=s synthetic surface--

the 5-year-old is trained Michael Dickinson.

Peter Brant, Mrs. MV Magnier and Mrs. Paul Shanahan=s Etoile

(Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) finished only 3/4 of a length a drift of

Theodora B. in the aforementioned Dance Smartly in only her

second start in the U.S. for trainer Chad Brown. Victorious in

Rounding out the triumvirate is John McCormack=s Elizabeth

Way (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), trained by Canadian Hall of Famer

Roger Attfield. On the board in one of five starts in her native

Ireland, the chestnut reeled off two straight wins for her new

connections at Gulfstream this winter--including the

9 1/2-furlong GIII The Very One S.--before finishing third in the

GIII Orchid S. over 11 panels in March. A well-beaten 13th in

Churchill=s GIII Mint Julep S. May 30, the daughter of graded

winner Maid=s Causeway (Giant=s Causeway) bounced back to

annex the one-mile GII Nassau S. June 27. Following her Dance

Smartly third, she ran an even fourth behind the re-opposing

Ridefourthecause (Candy Ride {Arg}) in the nine-furlong

GII Canadian S. Sept. 12. The latter steps up to Grade I

AI thought she was being overlooked [in the Canadian],@ said

Cox. AI train her so I have a little different outlook. I thought she

was being overlooked because it was such a perfect distance for

her.@

DECORATED INVADER TURNS BACK FOR

HILL PRINCE

West Point Thoroughbreds, William Sandbrook, William

Freeman and Cheryl Manning's Decorated Invader (Declaration

of War), a close fifth as the 4-5 favorite in the 1 3/16-mile

Saratoga Derby last time Aug. 15, resurfaces in Sunday=s GII Hill

Prince S. at Belmont Park.

Last term=s GI Summer S. winner and unlucky GI Breeders= Cup

Juvenile Turf fourth-place finisher kicked off his sophomore

campaign with three straight ultra-impressive victories,

including Belmont=s GII Pennine Ridge S. at this same one-mile

distance June 20 and Saratoga=s GII National Museum of Racing

Hall of Fame S. July 18.

"He didn't run great going a mile and three sixteenths, but he

only got beat three quarters of a length," West Point=s Terry

Finley said. "He's getting a bit of a breather here. He's been at it

once a month pretty much since the end of March when he

made his 3-year-old debut and [trainer] Christophe [Clement]

and his staff have done a great job with the horse."

Decorated Invader is the even-money morning-line favorite for

the Hill Prince.

The speedy Get Smokin (Get Stormy) figures to be on the

engine once again from his rail draw. He was a good second

after opening a lengthy early lead in the Hall of Fame, and most

recently tired to eighth after setting the pace in the Saratoga

Derby.

Buy Land and See (Cairo Prince), last fall=s Awad S. winner over

this same course and distance, enters off a third-place finish

going 5 1/2 furlongs in Saratoga=s Mahony S. Aug. 26.

a hot pace and understandably tired to fourth as the favorite in

the GII American Turf S. at Churchill Downs last time Sept. 5. The

Cannon Thoroughbreds homebred worked five furlongs in 1:00

(5/37) for trainer Michael McCarthy at Santa Anita Oct. 9.

Field Pass (Lemon Drop Kid), meanwhile, sat a dream trip back

in fourth in the American Turf, and, after leading in the stretch,

settled for third. The 2020 GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks and GIII

Kentucky Utilities Transylvania S. winner ships in from Kentucky

for Mike Maker.

Farmington Road (Quality Road), runner-up in the Oaklawn S.

and fourth in the split-division GI Arkansas Derby this spring,

switched to grass with an allowance win when last seen at

Colonial July 29.

The highly regarded Express Train (Union Rags), a double-digit

length maiden winner at Del Mar last summer, makes his turf

debut for John Shirreffs. He was second as the favorite in a

Santa Anita optional tagger last time Sept. 26.

NEW PLAYER EMERGES IN KENTUCKY'S

EQUINE LENDING SECTORby T.D. Thornton

An established Kentucky bank is emerging as a new player in

the equine lending sector. Independence Bank, a primarily

commercial institution with a large footprint in the western part

of the state and an asset portfolio that emphasizes agriculture,

expanded into Louisville in 2016 and just this fall hired the

Lexington-based Ted Berge, who has three decades of

Thoroughbred-specific banking experience, to be its director of

equine services.

"When you think about equine lending and you talk to

anybody in the industry, Ted Berge's name comes up first," Louis

Straub II, the Louisville market president of Independence Bank,

told TDN in a recent conference-call interview. "So if we are

going to build a specialty and help the industry, we're going to

have the best. You need the best in order to succeed. With Ted's

availability, that made us decide that it was time to enter into

the industry."

Berge, who was raised in central Kentucky and initially got

involved with the Thoroughbred business as a transactional

attorney, transitioned to banking in the late 1980s. His interest

in the sport and his personal experience as a farm owner have

not only helped him carve out a niche as a go-to banker who

understands the specialized capital needs of horse business

owners, but those twin equine passions also serve as the basis

for why Berge wants to provide financial services to the

Thoroughbred community.

"No offense, Louis, but I don't know if I could be a banker if it

wasn't for the horse business," Berge said in the same

conference call. "I really like the business. Kentucky's horse

country is beautiful. The people are interesting and diverse.

International owners come from everywhere."

Yet despite Kentucky's being the epicenter of Thoroughbred

breeding for North America--with a billion dollar-auction

market, hundreds of horse farms, five commercial racetracks, a

dizzying array of daily private bloodstock transactions, and a

wide supporting structure of related businesses that include

hospitality, veterinary, and feed services--the state is

considered, within banking circles, to be somewhat underserved

by commercial lenders.

"Right now there are primarily four," Berge said.

"Independence Bank, Limestone Bank, Farmers National Bank of

Danville, and Chase. There are others that handle horse

operations accounts and do farm mortgages. But specifically, on

ones that will utilize Thoroughbred bloodstock as collateral,

there are very few.

"It's really a business of client selection," Berge explained from

the lender's point of view. "You need to make sure you're

getting people who have good operations, that they're

otherwise well-capitalized, that they plan well, and that their

business model makes sense. And to some extent, that takes

having been around [the horse industry] for a long, long time."

Berge has been around long enough to candidly admit that

given the current uncertainty of the economy because of the

COVID-19 pandemic, it's a curious time for any bank to decide to

enter the sometimes-risky equine lending sector.

In his 30-plus years as a horse biz point person for various

banks (he just finished a 12-year run with a major player in

equine lending but said non-disclosure obligations keep him

from discussing specifics about that job), Berge has a solid

working knowledge of when banks find the Thoroughbred

industry attractive and when they decide (or are forced) to exit

it.

Historically, Berge said, banks get in at the top of the market

when business is booming, like in the 1980s or the pre-recession

2000s. "They kind of buy high and sell low," he said.

But starting an equine lending program when the marketplace

isn't so robust can be a unique opportunity for a bank, Berge

said.

For starters, Berge explained, banks are usually keen to

perform due-diligence "stress testing" to try and prognosticate

what might happen when markets turn downward. But right

now, he said, "this is a time when this won't be a test. This will

be the real thing." So if Independence Bank acts prudently in its

initial wading into equine lending, it could be well-positioned for

when boom times cycle back.

With that in mind, Berge said he will be on the lookout for

clients who have a track record of weathering down-market

conditions.

"There are some real opportunistic asset acquisitions you can

do when other operations are having to sell things because they

have to," Berge said. "The really good horse operations are ones

that tend to buy in all markets. We certainly don't want them to

not buy in a market [just because it's] down."

But when it comes to pinning etched-in-stone values on equine

assets that get used as collateral, Berge is emphatic in

underscoring that's not his primary role as a banker. Nor, he

cautioned, should it be the role of any financial institution that is

serious about excelling in Thoroughbred-related lending.

"Banks that have gotten into it and made mistakes have been

ones that, in my observations, depended a little bit too much on

'We can do this because we know how much these horses are

worth,'" Berge said. "I will tell you this: I've been around the

horse business for a long time, and nobody is asking me to tell

them what horses are worth. There are other people who are

good at that. I know a little, but I know enough to know I don't

know enough.

"So if you start thinking of it as asset-based lending, and horses

are always going to be worth a certain amount, then you can

make mistakes," Berge said. "And once you make those

mistakes, it makes this business look very difficult."

There are other specialty challenges to equine lending, Berge

said. The two primary ones are that the collateral base turns

over a lot, and that the revenue stream of commercial breeders

is extremely seasonal.

Those parameters, Berge said, apply to the two main

categories of clients that equine lenders serve: Commercial

breeders and stallion owners, and also owner-breeders who do

some occasional selling but are primarily involved in racing, with

the goal of producing an increasingly valuable pool of assets.

For commercial breeding clients, Berge said, lines of credit can

help with seasonal cash flow fluctuations. Term loans are

available for asset purchases, which include buying stallions,

increasing broodmare bands, and making farm purchases or

improvements to existing properties.

Berge said prudent equine lenders don't select clients based

solely on the size of the operation.

"Obviously, [a lender] would like large, successful,

well-capitalized clients," Berge said. "But we're not going to shy

away from smaller ones if they make sense economically and

[have shown] part-performance abilities. But it's a tough

business to get start-up capital for--most businesses are."

That's because "if somebody is going to get into the horse

business and plans on fully leveraging their breeding stock

purchases, they're not going to be able to respond to a market

like the one we're seeing [now]," Berge said. "The great thing

about leverage is it sometimes allows you to increase profits

because you're able to buy more productive assets, and those

assets produce revenues. But [an opposite effect] can happen in

a down market. It tends to exaggerate losses."

Straub said that while Independence Bank is new to equine

lending, the Owensboro-headquartered bank has ample

experience serving Kentucky's agricultural base. He said in the

past 25 years, Independence Bank has grown from the

fifth-smallest bank in the state ($25 million in assets) to the fifth

largest ($2.8 billion in assets).

"And that's all organic growth," Straub said. "We have never

merged with anybody. That's all based upon client service.

According the American Bankers Association, the last ranking

they did in 2018, we were the fourth most financially sound

bank in the United States of America in the community bank

space."

Straub said he's known Berge for years, from when they both

worked at another bank together.

When Straub heard Berge was leaving that previous employer,

"I got together with our management team, and we saw the real

need for another Kentucky-based bank to really support the

Thoroughbred industry. Equine is too important of an industry

for the state of Kentucky to not be supported by Kentucky

banks. Given our history and our specialty in the agriculture

segment, we thought that the equine industry could fit in

perfectly with what we do."

Berge said he has continued to monitor Kentucky's equine

marketplace during his transition this autumn to Independence

Bank. But he admitted that no matter how close any banker is to

the Thoroughbred industry, the pandemic has made it difficult

to get a true near-term picture of its economic direction.

"Exactly how this is going to impact the Thoroughbred market

going forward is really difficult to tell. It's a disease-driven

change in the economy," Berge said. "In some ways, it was really

encouraging the way the sales went, all things considered. It was

a little surprising that the first two [Keeneland September

yearling] books suffered as much as they did [because]

high-quality assets tend to hold their values longer. But that may

have had something to do with the lack of [high-spending]

principals being able to show up at the sales; they tend to drive

those high-dollar purchases.

"There is clearly a lot of disruption in the world of the horse

business, from racing to how sales are conducted, and even the

sales that were canceled," Berge summed up. "But disruption

can be an opportunity if you're willing to step in and seize those

opportunities when they pop up."

East Galway, Ireland, Lyons graduated from the Equine Science

and Business program at the University of Limerick. He began

his stateside employment with the late Gerry Dilger at his

Dromoland Farm over two decades ago. After stints at Taylor

Made Farm, ClassicStar Farm, and Woodford Thoroughbreds,

Lyons has been a part of Candy Meadows, an arm of Everett

Dobson=s Cheyenne Stables, as its senior vice president and

chief operating officer since 2018.

Among the words describing Lyons on his TIEA nomination

A total of seven award categories will be honored by TIEA for

2020. Maria Cristina Silva of New York Thoroughbred

Horsemen's Association (NYTHA) has already been announced

as the winner of the Community Award, while the winners in the

other categories will be announced live in a virtual ceremony

hosted by Jill Bryne and streamed at the TDN homepage

Thursday, Nov. 5, at 12:00 p.m. ET. All finalists will be

spotlighted in TDN in the days leading up to the ceremony.

NYRA RELEASES JOCKEY PROTOCOLS FOR AQUEDUCT NYRA released its COVID-19 protocols Saturday for jockeys

riding at the Aqueduct fall meet, which runs from Nov. 6 to Dec.

6. Members of the Aqueduct jockey colony who travel to ride at

any other racetrack during the fall meet will be required to

provide two negative COVID-19 tests taken within a five-day

window in order to return to ride at Aqueduct. Jockeys traveling

out of state who have completed the required testing will then

be physically isolated in the jockey quarters for three additional

calendar days.

Jockeys not currently riding at NYRA who wish to join the

Aqueduct jockey colony for the beginning of the Aqueduct fall

meet must contact NYRA's Senior Vice President of Racing

Operations Martin Panza or Aqueduct Racing Secretary Keith

Doleshel by Wednesday, Nov. 11. Newcomers to the NYRA

jockey colony will be required to provide two negative COVID-19

tests taken within the five-day window preceding that jockey's

first mount at Aqueduct.

In order to mitigate risk and reduce the spread of COVID-19,

Aqueduct will be closed to out-of-town jockeys not considered

members of the regular NYRA jockey colony. All testing must be

performed in New York state.

In addition to race day safety protocols which include standard

health screening and temperature checks, the jockey quarters at

Aqueduct have been substantially altered to provide maximum

social distancing and reduce density. All areas accessed by

jockeys during the regular course of a race day are closed to

outside personnel, including credentialed media, and are

cleaned and disinfected throughout the day.

Jockeys are not permitted access to the barn area at Belmont

Park. In order to work a horse in the morning, the jockey must

meet the horse in the paddock and may then proceed to the

main track for as long as the main track remains open.

Jockey agents arriving from outside of New York must produce

a negative COVID-19 test in order to gain access to the barn area

at Belmont Park. Races will continue to be drawn via Zoom.

All valets must provide a negative COVID-19 test taken any

time after Nov. 2 in order to access the jockey quarters on

opening day, Nov. 6.

DELAWARE THOROUGHBRED RACING

COMMISSION COMES OUT AGAINST HISA Citing lack of financial information outlined in its framework,

the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission (DTRC)

unanimously voted Oct. 14 to oppose U.S. Senate Bill 4547, the

Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act. The U.S. House of

Representatives passed its version (HR 1754) Sept. 29 by a voice

vote. The Delaware Harness Racing Commission (DHRC) has also

come out in opposition of the pending legislation, claiming the

bill is an Aunnecessary burden that could be potentially harmful

to the entire horseracing industry.@

According to a release, the DTHC claims that unknown costs

will be Adetrimental@ to an industry where profit margins are

slim to begin with and that the addition of an extra layer of

governmental oversight will fuel an increase in costs.

The DTHC also says in its release that they believe that the

governing body established by HISA would not necessarily

include individuals with experience in Thoroughbred racing and

the control of the drugs used in the business.

The DTHC points out that while they find the standardization

of rules pertaining to drug use included in the new legislation to

be Alaudable,@ they already follow the guidelines and standard

testing rules of the Association of Racing Commissioners

International (ARCI), rules that are adhered to by U.S. racing

jurisdictions that account for 90% of the handle in the country.

Favored at 3-5 to add to a facile 2 1/4-length debut success in

Saratoga graduate was outfooted early, but mustered speed up

AI was excited about it, but I was a little nervous about it as the

morning went on,@ trained Shug McGaughey told NYRA=s Maggie

Wolfendale after the race. AHe=d been training well. It=s been a

go-and-stop year. He was going to run in the [GI] Carter [H.] on

Wood day and then he was going to run in the Carter on June 6,

but we had to stop him and take care of some things. I was very,

very pleased with what I saw.@

After inclement weather earlier in the week forced the

postponement of Performer=s final pre-race work, McGaughey

breezed him a more sedate half-mile in :49 1/5 just two days

prior.

AIt probably would have been more the first of the week and

probably a little more solid, but I have done that in the past,@

the Hall of Famer said when asked by Wolfendale if a work that

close to a race is typical for him. ASometimes I think it=s good for

horses, kind of brush them up a little bit. When you do it, you

hope they come out of it good and he did.@

McGaughey said Performer could make his next start in the

$250,000 GI Cigar Mile H. at Aqueduct Dec. 5.

AIf he comes out of [Saturday=s race] good, that=s what our
