“He was also a Chindit as part of the 1stBattalion of the King’s Regiment in India.

“To have done both is a very rare featindeed, in what was a remarkable militaryservice.

“We really are proud to say that a man asrare and brave as Cyril is one of our own.”

Street robber whothreatened to slitw o m a n’s throatis put behind bars

A MAN who threatened to slit the throat of a womanin Waterloo if she didn't hand over her purse hasbeen jailed.

Kane Queen, 24, of Church Road, Waterloo, hasbeen put behind bars for four years for the shockingincident after he targeted a woman in her 50s onQueen Street on the evening of Saturday, October 21.

He approached his victim shortly before 6.30pmholding a kitchen knife, with his face covered with abalaclava.

He threatened to slit her throat if she didn't handover her purse.

Out of impulse, she pulled at his balaclava andscratched his face.

Queen then ran off with a small shopping trolley shehad been pushing, which he abandoned after remov-ing her purse.

However, he was arrested after his DNA wasrecovered from the fingernails of his victim.

The victim had contacted police and crime sceneinvestigators attended at the victim’s address andrecovered fingernail clippings from her left hand.

DNA from her nails identified the offender to beQueen and he was subsequently traced, arrested andcharged following interview.

Detective Constable John Neville said: “The victimin this case was exceptionally brave.

“We would advise people to contact police ratherthan tackle an offender themselves but in this case theDNA recovered from the victim’s fingernails was vitalin linking Queen to this crime and bringing him tojustice.

“He will now spend Christmas behind bars where Ihope he will have plenty of time to reflect on hisactions.

“As always I would like to give people advice on stay-ing safe, particularly during the dark winter months.

“Always stick to well-lit roads and pavements, don’tcarry large quantities of cash and jewellery on yourperson and if you see anyone acting suspiciously con-tact Merseyside Police.”

He was jailed on Wednesday, December 13 at Liver-pool Crown Court, which has been welcomed byMerseyside Police.

RESIDENTS have been ‘kept in the dark’ overplans by Sefton Council to privatise theb o ro u g h ’s street lighting service, a councillorclaims.

The council is in the process of procuring a providerfor street lighting, installation and maintenance ser-vices in a bid to save £64million by 2020.

The Champion also understands that the ‘nightscouting’ service has been axed - meaning thecouncil will be fully reliant on members of the pub-lic to report faults and broken lights.

Borough councillor Tony Dawson said: “Thecouncil has decided that the entire local street light-ing service is being put into the private sector.

“Further, it is going to stop regularly reviewingstreet lighting in the borough for failure.

“It will now have to rely on members of the publicreporting specific lights which have failed.”

Clr Dawson is unhappy with the way the decisionwas reached.

He said: “Councillors were sent an email by acouncil officer recently telling them that the entirelocal street lighting service was being privatised.

“But as to who is getting the work, we are beingkept in the dark,

“We are also being kept completely in the dark asto the precise reasons for the change.

“Recently the council has been bringing selected

previously-privatised services back in-house.”A spokesman for Sefton Council said: “As part of

the budget setting process to save £64m by 2020, adecision was made in March, 2017 to introduce achange to the Street Lighting maintenance function.

“This decision went through the normal politicalprocess and all the associated reports and decisionswere published on the council's website.

“We are currently in the process of procuring anexternal service provider to deliver street lightingmaintenance and installation services.

“Also agreed earlier in the budget process was adecision to end the ‘Night Scouting’ service whichpreviously identified all non-functioning lightingunits.

“We will now be fully reliant on the public, coun-cillors and other stakeholders to report faultsregarding any electrical street furniture and hopeeveryone lets us know if they spot any brokenlights.

“The best way is to use the online reporting toolon sefton.gov.uk/4656.”

Other ways to report faults include calling 0345140 0845 or email [email protected] o v. u k ”

Paul Towers back homewith family after hisrelease from India jail

FORMER soldier Paul Towers has finallyreturned home to spend Christmas with hisfamily after his release from a prison inIndia where he had been held for threeyears.

The Bootle born dad thanked those who sup-ported him during what he called his“protracted nightmare” of being held in Chen-nai prison on charges of gun-running.

Paul was one of six former soldiers who werearrested and later given a five year jail sen-tence after a ship they were working on, whichhad weapons on board, was searched by theIndian authorities.

All six maintained their innocence and saidthey were working as security guards on anAmerican-owned anti-piracy vessel.

Pa u l ’s father Don, who lives in Litherland, was among those who campaigned to free the‘Chennai Six’ resulted in a judge acquittingthem of all charges last month.

He said: “I would like to thank a number ofpeople and organisations for their assistance Ireceived these last four years, especially the twoyears and nine months spent in prison in TamilNadu.

“I have always maintained this experience was insome ways harder for our loved ones.

“In the early months we had each other for com-pany, but our wives and partners had nothing butmemories and photographs as they closed theirdoors each night. They were alone.

“Wives who were depending on husbands, moth-ers without the love of their sons and most painfullyfor some, children without their fathers. All weredesperate for news and information.

“My dearest darling wife suffered with the painand agony as to when she would see me again. Annnever stopped working, never gave up and alwaystold me it would never decide our future.

“The authorities in Tamil Nadu, promised to 'ruinour lives'. Their endeavours failed! Some of us

became stronger throughout what was to become aprotracted nightmare.

“My son Jordan has been the shining light for ourfamily and dear friends. I am a proud man to have ason such as him.

“Thank you for all the support we were given andthe cards and parcels which kept our morale high!“Our lives became bearable throughout the last twoyears.

“Please enjoy your family time over the Christmasperiod, may we all move forward into a new chapterand forget the past. It is over.

“We are humbled and indebted to you all. Onbehalf of my family and myself, thank you.”

His dad, Don, from Litherland, has previouslyspoken to the Champion about the campaign to freeall six men and delivered a petition to DowningStreet along with the other family members of theChennai Six.

Rail passengers urgedto ‘keep a clear head’over festive period

RAILWAY passengers are beingwarned that they run the risk of beingarrested if they act in an anti-social orviolent way over the festive period.

Officers from the British Tr a n s p o r tPolice say they experience a rise in thenumber of reports of passengers causingproblems on trains around this time ofyear, and this is fuelled by alcohol.

Together with Network Rail and theRail Safety and Standards Board, the BTPhave launched the ‘Keep a Clear Head’campaign to remind passengers to bere s p o n s i b l e .

Superintendent Eddie Wylie said:“Unfortunately, during the festive sea-son, we see a rise in public orderoffences and antisocial behaviour.

“Much of this is down to the people involveddrinking too much and behaving in a way thatwould shock them and their family and friends ifthey were sober.

“We want everyone to get to their destinations a f e l y.

“Our officers will be out on the network in theNorth of England helping people to enjoy the festiv-ities safely and encouraging them to think abouthow alcohol can affect the way they behave and theeffect this has on their fellow passengers.

“If you’re using the railway to get around thisChristmas, please keep a clear head.

“Think about what you would do and how youwould behave if you were sober. There is no excusefor spoiling other people’s journeys or behaving

any differently because you’ve drunk alcohol. Wewant you to have fun but it’s more important to getwhere you’re going safely.

“Though trains are the safest way to get around, passengers and people living near the railway mustalways remember that it can be a dangerous place. That’s why we’re reminding the public to remainalert to those dangers whilst they’re having funover the festive season.

“Taking a short cut across the tracks, chancing itat level crossings or tripping at the platform edgecan, at best cause delays to your journey; at worseit can result in serious harm.

“Enjoy yourself but don’t let alcohol stop you oryour fellow passengers from getting to where youneed to be – keep a clear head.”

Rail passengers are reminded to behave over the festive period.

Christmas with dogs - and aduck - can be a joyous occasionBY the time you read this I willhave put up my Christmas dec-orations - rather pitiful thoughthey may be.

I have my little Christmas treecomplete with fibre optic lightswhich I bought just after mymum died to cheer our celebra-tions for my late brotherGeorge and I.

Even new, its illuminationsd i d n’t live op to the shining illustrations on its box -and the years have led to it becoming rather dim-mer still - though I suppose I should be gratefulthat what was at the forefront of Yuletide illumina-tion when new is still working at all after 15 years.

Certainly it has outlived all of the then new-fangled digital appliances we bought for ourhouse.

And a couple of years ago I purchased a string ofmore conventional fairy lights which work very well, leaving the fibre optics as a sort of background colour.

Happily, and I confess I have no idea why, noneof the dogs (both Tina and Cinders post-date thetree by several years) take any notice of itwhatever - perhaps they don't see the colours.

Actually, I have puzzled for some time about boththe sight and hearing of dogs - our rough collies atleast.

None have been remotely interested in televisionpictures - which I put down to them needing rathermore than 625 lines to make out 'real' images.

But the sound is stranger still. They must be able to hear the TV (and radio for

that matter) but again take little notice of them.Cinders ignores them completely, while Tina

responds to dogs barking - but human voices, explosions, screams are of no interest to her at all.

Still, all this means that the little tree remainsundisturbed by canines - though I'm certain dis-aster would result if anything remotely edible wasplaced around or on it.

Cinders is, as I have remarkedbefore, the greediest creation onearth.

She will scoff anything evenremotely edible - and at the sametime never makes herself ill (whichI suppose is good - though sherichly deserves a tummy ache atleast) nor, for that matter, does sheput on weight.

Anyway, I have now to plan ourculinary delights for Christmas dinner and tea, andBoxing Day dinner too. After mum died, Georgeand I actually carried this tradition on - thoughusually we substituted a duck for a goose.

I think a small duck might be the thing for Christ-mas dinner - with the addition of perhaps some hamit would also furnish the basis of a jolly good Christ-mas tea-cum-supper too.

I'll just have to see what turkey product mightprove sensible for Boxing Day - though instead Imight treat ourselves to a festive half shoulder oflamb instead.

Christmas pud is already seen to - I still have asmall pud unused since last year, and indeed onefrom the year before that too. They say Christmaspudding improves with age though so I’ll just hopefor the best.

But then there are all the side bits and bobs aswell. Things like cranberry sauce - which I like verymuch with Christmas poultry - are all very well.

But it's such a waste buying a bottle of the stuffjust for one, and I suspect even Cinders might drawthe line at that, (unless smothered in duck.)

Still, I will have my traditional open fire andcompany who will not contradict either my prefer-ences in food - though conversation is ratherstilted.

So I’m certain my Christmas, though limited inscope, will be a joyous occasion - and I sincerelyhope that all of you have a wonderful Christmastoo, in good cheer and harmony.

“Especially around this period, thisChristmas period, going in and help-ing them with different things they’remaking over Christmas.

“Honestly, I'm really enjoying it,working with these people, and Ithink it's a place now where I'll cer-tainly keep in touch with whenobviously my hours are over.

“It's a refreshing place to go and it'srelaxing, you're working with people, doing different things which Iwouldn't have done if I didn't gothere, so it's been great going there.

“Seeing what they do, obviouslythey need support in what they do,there are a lot of adults with learningdifficulties who just need a little bit ofhelp and a bit of guidance andsomeone there to help them.

“And I think the staff there are doinga fantastic job and when I go theymake me feel really welcome. I'llkeep in touch with them and try andhelp.”

Rooney pleaded guilty to drinkdriving at Stockport Magistrates'Court in September following anincident in the early hours of Septem-ber 1.

He added: “I knew straight away Ihad made a stupid mistake and I haveto move on.

“It is not nice, obviously. I've gotchildren and it’s not nice for them tosee that and I try and move on andlearn from it which I feel I amdoing.”

Park campaigners want to meetPeel Port over road support

C AMPAIGNERS who are fighting tostop plans to build a new roadthrough Rimrose Valley County Parkhave written to Peel Ports in the hopeof gaining their support.

Rimrose Valley Friends are trying topersuade Highways England to scraptheir proposal to build a dual car-riageway through the south Seftonpark as they look to create bettertransport links between Switch Islandand the Port of Liverpool.

The group have now penned anopen letter to Peel Port bosses torequest a meeting to discuss the pos-sibility of “gaining their support.”

A spokesperson for Rimrose ValleyFriends said: “We are acutely awarethat this is a sensitive issue and thatthis may be viewed as a controversialstep, given that many within ourcommunity view Peel Ports as beingresponsible for the construction of theroad in the first place.

“In turn, Peel Ports point to the factthat the decision to build the roadwas made by Highways England, on

behalf of the UK Government.“So, why write to them requesting a

meeting? Well, it is clear that theyhave a huge interest in this road goingahead, as they will benefit from it themost.

“They regularly champion theamount of jobs and investment theybring to the local economy.

“We therefore feel that, if Peel Portsgenuinely care about the communityand environment within which theyoperate, they should demonstrate thisby accepting a meeting with our groupand listen to what we have to sayabout the destruction of our cher-ished, green space. We will let youknow soon as we have an update toshare on this.”

PICTURE of the week

Santa decided to give his reindeers a well-earned rest when he arrived at West Lancashire Light Railway by steam engine last weekend to giveout presents to young rail enthusiasts. Picture by Martyn Snape.

Bootle Branch Line to Port needs upgradingto prevent more lorries using our roadsRE: Port Expansion Key to UK’s Trading Future art-icle’ page 2, Champion, November 29.

It takes nine hours to complete a 90 mile journeyfrom the Port of Liverpool to Selby Power Stationwith a train load of biomass, partly because of theancient railway infrastructure which presentlyblights the Bootle Branch Line.

All rail traffic must negotiate this branch lineafter leaving and entering the Port via Olive MountJunction .

The single line speed is currently 20mph andwithin the dock system it is walking pace for safetyre a s o n s .

Polluting diesel locomotives (not electric) musthaul massive freight trains from the Port onto avery steep gradient, only yards from houses.

Only a tiny number of trains use the line atpresent but more can be expected in future whichthe community in the Queens Road area of Bootleshould be told about.

The single line dock system becomes a doubletrack system. When approaching Edge Lane Junc-tion the track reverts to a single line.

Until the single line is unoccupied no train canenter or leave the Bootle Branch Line from themain line via the Olive Mount Junction mentioned.

Once a train leaves the Bootle Branch it then hasto compete with more than 200 passenger trainsentering and departing Lime Street station everyday. They all must pass via the Olive Mount Junc-tion .

This may well be news to many of your readersand needs to be highlighted.

We are now approaching the perfect storm i.e. adock railway system confined through lack ofspace and water, at 20 mph, a 100 year plus rail-way line leading to a single line which in turnleads to a near 200 year old passenger railway.

The present dock rail system via the BootleBranch Line can logistically only make a very small

dent in the ever increasing amount of containertraffic highlighted in the Champion report and weshould all wake up to that fact.

We know where much of the extra containertraffic will finish up - on our roads.

Peel Port have mentioned the catalyst for change. But this must not mean that families residing

along the Dunningsbridge Road and Rimrose Val-ley corridors must pay the price for the futuresuccess of peel Port by thousands of extra pollutinglorries making life a misery for our residents’ livingalong the mentioned corridors.

Let Peel Ports stand with our people, anddemand similar investment to major schemes inLondon, that the Government fund the muchneeded tunnel in order to alleviate the misery anopen road will create.

Helping children get betterreading skills is so rewardingI was delighted to see the letterfrom Ginny Lunn in the Champion,December 6 edition on the work ofthe ‘Beanstalk’ charity volunteers.

I would like to add to that Ivolunteered upon retirement andcan honestly say what a delight itis to be able to help childrenimprove their reading skills andconfidence.

Many of our little ones need thatone to one assistance we provideand positively thrive on it.

Beanstalk provide excellent profes-sional training, great support andhands on back up whenever needed.

All materials are provided too.Schools in your area are waiting

for you to volunteer and I wouldencourage you to give it seriousthought.

I certainly have never regretted it,in fact I am sure I look forward toit as much as the children!

Do visit the website onwww.beanstalkcharity.org.uk or call0845 450 0307.

It is so rewarding.

Crazy For You had anamazingly talented castMy wife entered a recent com-petition run by your paper for achance to see a show at the Liv-erpool Empire theatre.

A week later we received aphone call from a member ofyour staff telling us she had wonthis prize.

We attended the show on t andit was a real treat!

We were seated in the middleof the theatre auditorium andhad a great view of a very enter-taining show.

The show was called Crazy ForYou and was a light-hearted

comic musical. The cast of the show were all

amazingly talented and all ofthem played musical instru-ments as well as singing anddancing.

It was a terrific show and wewere very impressed.

Many thanks to yourselves forrunning such competitions.

Very much appreciated.

Not such a greenand pleasant land

Why do we pretend we live in a pleasant resid-ential area?

We have horrendous noise pollution from ahuge, ever-expanding port, air pollution fromhundreds of lorries and heavy traffic, industrialfires, weeds, litter, Highways England withtheir ‘like it or lump it’ two options, variousroad building and widening projects and nowthe possibility of losing Rimrose Valley CountryPa r k .

We have empty shops and buildings, a closeddown library and a ‘village’ that is a joke.

Why do we insist on deluding ourselves?

Homes could causesewage problemsOur councillors decide soon whether to grant plan-ning permission to build 1,700 homes in Maghull.

At a Maghull Town Council Flood committee meet-ing in November, 2016 a United Utilities spokesmanstated that building about 30 a year was about right.

Already 350 homes at Poppy Fields are being connected .Although the proposed connections to the sewer

are at Deyes Lane and Foxhouse Lane, the sewersthen pass through large areas of Maghull on the wayto the treatment plants. Excess in this network couldcause problems anywhere in Maghull.

Garden flagging firmwent the extra mileI would just like to say that a local company calledForrester ’s Fencing and Sheds did a brilliant jobflagging my garden and went above and beyondwhat I asked for.

They did things that needed doing in the gardenwhich I didn’t ask for and they didn't charge meany extra. I just thought they deserved recognition.

Naturally I am pleased that efforts are beingmade to record local history.

But it is important that such records should beaccurate.

Gerard Manley Hopkins was one of manypriests at St Francis Xavier (not St Saviours)who came regularly to stay at Rose Hill, Lydiate, for a brief respite from their toils.

He did not live in Lydiate. He came by Town Green station (not Maghull)

and walked to Lydiate, composing Spring andFall as he walked through Aughton and Lydiate.

The facts can be verified in his collected let-ters edited by CC Abbott and in my articlepublished in The Local Historian, May 2003.

D o n’t let your Christmasdinner help to create a fatbergA CAMPAIGN group set up to keep theUK ’s beaches clean are urging Seftonresidents to take measures after theirChristmas dinner to ensure they don’thelp to create a fatberg!

Across the festive season, StephanieWyatt from LOVEmyBEACH is askingfamilies to help keep the beaches andseas clean by making sure all leftovercooking fats and oils are put in the binrather than poured down the sink.

She revealed that if leftover fat fromcooking the Christmas dinner goesdown the sink, even with hot waterand washing up liquid, it soon setshard in the cold pipes. When it mixeswith other unflushable items, such aswet wipes and sanitary products, itcreates what is known as a fatberg.

The fatbergs then clog the seweragepipes and stop the waste water reach-ing the treatment works as intended. This means the risk of sewage spillingout into homes, streets, rivers and

seas is substantially increased. However, this risk can be easily min-

imalised by scraping or pouringleftover fat from roasting trays andpans into a heat resistant containerthen recycle or bin it once cooled;wiping out grease left in pans with kit-chen roll before washing and using asink strainer to catch any greasy foodscraps.

She said: “It’s easy to think that alittle bit of fat down the sink won’tcause any issues however the problemis there are millions of residents acrossthe North West and that amountquickly adds up.”

Even the richest of Christmas recipientsw o n’t be getting a Fiat Punto this year...

IT’S THAT time of year again. Yep, the one whereyou encourage an elderly bloke you’ve never metto wobble around on your icy rooftop in themiddle of the night, having helped themselves toseveral glasses of sherry. What could go wrong?

Assuming our red-jacketed chum manages to doall his festive deliveries without slipping andplunging into some poor soul’s back garden there’sa fair chance we’ll have a few presents to open onChristmas morning. I’m sure there’ll be plenty of

you unwrapping Star Wars merchandise and shinysmartphones, but I think I can safely predict thateven the richest of festive recipients won’t be get-ting a lovely new Fiat Punto as a present.

That’s largely because – despite Fiat’s efforts tojazz it up over the years – it is a 12-year-old design, meaning it comes from an era when watching Lostand having the Crazy Frog as your ringtone were allthe rage. So you’d have to be a brave buyer to go forone over a much newer Fiesta, Corsa or Polo.

We already know that the Punto is looking a bitancient – which is why Euro NCAP’s decision to putit through a crash test it’s already conducted has leftthe car world a bit baffled. The safety boffins havemade a fairly big deal about the fact it failed toscore a single star in its safety test in a world wherefive is the norm these days. It’s a product that iswell past its best-before date, at the expense of theunsuspecting car buyer. Not my words, but EuroNC AP ’s.

Anyone who remembers what happened whenthe Rover 100 picked up a dismal score will knowthat this might as well be the kiss of death for Italy’sfavourite supermini – but it’s worth rememberingthat in 2005 the same generation of Punto pickedup a five-star safety rating. So which is right, andwhere does it leave all of us who can’t afford todrive brand new cars?

It’s laudable that Euro NCAP wants to raise thebar when it comes to safety but retesting an existingmodel and giving it a completely different ratingruns the risk of rendering all the other old resultsmeaningless. I’m sure all of you out there drivingabout in Fiat Puntos – or just about any other carover about three years old – must be thrilled. Whynot just set a benchmark for all cars to achieve andkeep it there, so it’s easy for normal people tounderstand how much safer cars are getting?

I’m looking forward to driving home for Christ-mas in my three-star Toyota Avensis. Which iseither a car with decent – but not brilliant – s a f e t y,or a deathtrap so dangerous I might as well wobblearound on an icy rooftop afterwards.

Win gives perfect festive tonic for WaterlooDouglas 30Firwood Waterloo 35

PLAYING some of their best rugby of the sea-son so far, despite the difficult conditions,Firwood Waterloo closed the first half of theirseason with a well deserved 30-35 win away toIsle of Man side Douglas, a result over thethird place side in North One West that liftsthem into eighth place.

Firwood Waterloo took the early lead with apenalty from Tom Booth before, with the fullback entering the line to create the extra man,

Jacob Allen went over for the opening try .Douglas came right back with a converted try

but from a catch and drive and a missed passby Booth opening up the space, Scott Davidsonwent over for the second. Booth added theconversion and a penalty for a 7-15 lead.

Following a penalty by Douglas, from ascrum in mid-field Booth put Jimmy Muirthrough the gap for the third also adding theconversion.

Coming up to the interval Douglas manageda converted a try to close the half with Fir-wood Waterloo 17-25 in front.

The home side had the better of the opening

stages of the second period and with two triesand a conversion took the lead for the firsttime going 27-25 ahead.

Firwood Waterloo refused to concede andkeeping the ball tight worked their way upfield with some forceful pick and drive play toget Wilbur Harris over for what proved to bethe winner.

Douglas however managed to close the gapto two points with a penalty which left nervesjangling before Booth sealed the win with apenalty right at the end.

Firwood Waterloo now take a two week breakbefore returning to action on 6th January at

home to Wilmslow.Waterloo director of rugby Steve Wood called

it a “very satisfying win.”He said: “We went out with the right attitude

our game management was much better andalthough were were 'under the cosh' for about15 minutes in the second half when they tookthe lead we dug in and came back to take thehonours.

“Even just a few weeks ago we might wellhave folded at that point but the boys showedgreat resilience and it means that we can gointo the Christmas break with a spring in ourstep.”

SPORTBucks boss delightedto have Peers back

BOOTLE joint-manager JoeDoran believes Carl Peersreturning to the club provesthe “grass isn’t always greenere l s e w h e re ” writes ConnorO’Neill.

Peers left the Bucks in thesummer for Evo-Stik Northside Radcliffe.

But after just eight monthswith theG re a t e rManchesteroutfit the mid-fielder hasopted to dropdown a leveland return toBootle - aplace where hescored 24times last sea-son.

Speaking onPe e r s ’ re t u r n ,Doran said: “Iam delightedto have Carlback as well asRyan (Jones).

“Losing themin the summerwas a bigblow, theywere the twothat decided to give it a goelsewhere, but they weren’tthe only ones targeted byother clubs.

“They are back now andready to work hard toimprove our results with therest of the squad.”

Peers arrives back at the TDPSolicitors Stadium with his

new side sat in sixth, tenpoints behind league leadersRuncorn Town.

But Doran believes Peers’ i n i-tial summer departure is oneof the many reasons for hissides poor start to the season.

“Do I think it has unsettledthe team? It’s probably one ofmany reasons we haven't had

the best of sea-sons so far”Doran said.

“But in terms ofthe squad now weare happy to havethem back andthey join analready reallystrong squad.

“We need tostart raising ourperformances andstart winninggames consist-ently if we wantto reside thepotential of thisteam.

“We don't wantto be losing play-ers, but as thishas shown thegrass isn't alwaysgreener away

from Bootle.“We have a list of quality

players that have played atBootle for a number of years,as far as I'm concerned, there's only one place to be.”

Peers is expected to makehis second debut for theBucks at home to Padiham onS a t u rd a y.

Carl Peers is back at Bootle.

Mariners magnificent inTrophy but it’s a long tripto Dover in next roundChorley 1Marine 3

MARINE face a 600 mile round trip toDover in the second round of the FATrophy after beating National LeagueNorth side Chorley on Saturday.

Both teams were coming into the matchon form, with Marine unbeaten in fiveand Chorley without a loss in their previ-ous six games.

Within the first two minutes the Mag-pies were ahead.

Marine worked the ball forward fromthe kick-off and Danny Mitchley man-aged an effort on goal but the ball thenwent down the other end and MattyHughes blasted the ball into the net toput Chorley 1-0 up.

Marine, backed by a vocal band of sup-porters, started to apply some pressure.

Florian Da Silva volleyed a chance widethen had a header tipped over the bar fol-lowing an excellent free kick from VinnyB a i l e y.

There was more great work down theleft from Marine as they kept the ball inplay following a corner and the ball wascrossed into the box and Adam Hughesslammed the ball home from close rangeto make it 1-1. It was no more than Mar-ine deserved.

The pendulum then swung in the other

direction as Chorley had a couple ofdecent efforts with Hughes coming to therescue at the other end with a goal-lineclearance and Fearon making a great fin-gertip save to deny the Magpies.

As the half time whistle blew, it wasclear the Marine fans sensed victory.

The pivotal moment came on the hourwith Smart going down after a lungefrom Chorley’s Josh Wilson who was sub-sequently sent off.

As the second half went on the gamebecame stretched with both teams gun-ning for the winner.

But it was Marine who stepped up andgot the goal. James Murray, who hasbeen in terrific form, smashed the ball atgoal and it was deflected in causing wild

celebrations from the Marine fans.As fog descended on Victory Park, Chor-
