Letruska Wins Again in Spinster cont. from p1

Shaking loose from her nearest pursuers with ears pricked

heading into the clubhouse turn, Letruska clicked off moderate

fractions of :24 flat and :47.89 while moving easily in the clear.

Crystal Ball (Malibu Moon) tried her best to take a run at the

chalk as three-quarters went up in 1:12.52, but was always

under more pressure than Letruska and dropped away by the

top of the lane. Distant second choice Dunbar Road (Quality

Road) began to make up marginal ground passing the eighth

pole, but was never a realistic threat, and Letruska bounded

past the wire a victress for the 17th time in her remarkable 22-

race career.

AThis is a horse to change the life of any person,@ said

Gutierrez. AShe=s a superstar and she proves [it] every second,

every race. She shows her game, her ability at Churchill, at

Oaklawn, at Saratoga. She=s a racehorse.@

AShe=s doing so good right now,@ added Ortiz. AI think she has

great condition, a good trainer. She=s doing unbelievable right

now. She was just moving smooth out there. She didn=t go that

fast today but she did it easy, relaxed, and whenever I asked her

she was there for me.@

Pedigree Notes:

One of 32 stakes winners, 16 graded stakes winners and seven

Grade I winners for 2010 GI Kentucky Derby hero Super Saver,

Letruska is the third black-type performer and second black-type

winner from seven foals to race out of GSP Magic Appeal, a half-

sister to GISW and sire J P's Gusto (Successful Appeal) and the

dam of dual Canadian champion Miss Mischief (Into Mischief).

Second dam Call Her Magic (Caller I. D.) was an eight-time

winner in 14 career starts and ran a 107 Beyer when airing in a

turf sprint stake by 6 3/4 lengths at Delaware in 2000.

Swiss Skydiver Will Be Missed by McPeek cont. from p1

During a year of the unprecedented in 2020, it became

altogether familiar to find Swiss Skydiver in the entries nearly

every month.

Or maybe it was the grit and bravery she displayed so

magnificently in her historic GI Preakness. S., refusing to let

Authentic inch past her white shadow roll. Every racing fan

remembers exactly where they were watching as she battled to

become the sixth filly in history to win the Preakness S.

Even still, it could have been her intelligent personality, which

Kenny McPeek shared with her many admirers through social

media as they journeyed to racetracks across the county.

Perhaps the fierce chestnut=s uniqueness shines through in all

of those elements, each one an important element in the story

of Swiss Skydiver.

A member of the first crop of Daredevil, Hip 2997 was a

half-sister to two winners and the granddaughter of GSP Clouds

of Gold (Strike the Gold), but it wasn=t her pedigree that caught

the eye of Kenny McPeek.

AShe was a big, beautiful filly with a great walk to her and a

great energy,@ the agent said, recalling even the barn at which

he first laid eyes on her.

McPeek purchased the Select Sales-consigned yearling for

$35,000 for longtime client Peter Callahan. Swiss Skydiver made

her debut the following November at Churchill Downs, breaking

her maiden there by five and a half lengths.

There was much more to come as the calendar turned to 2020.

Swiss Skydiver becomes one for the record books

in the 2020 GI Preakness S. | Horsephotos

AHer 3-year-old season was magical,@ McPeek said. @For

everybody who was dealing with the pandemic, we knew that

there were a lot of people that couldn=t go to the races and we

were traveling with Swiss Skydiver. We went from state to state

and it seemed like everywhere we went was a new adventure.@

Swiss Skydiver collected three consecutive graded stakes

victories before making her first start against the boys in the GII

Blue Grass S., running a more-than-acceptable second to Art

Collector (Bernardini). After earning her first Grade I in the

Alabama S. and then taking second in the GI Kentucky Oaks,

Kenny McPeek had skeptics reeling when she was entered in yet

another contest, this one against her toughest competition still,

in the Preakness.

AI never second-guessed running her against the boys at all,@

McPeek said when asked of his decision to enter the filly in her

ninth start of the year. AHer speed figures looked like she fit

against just about anybody.@

Off at 11-1, Swiss Skydiver refused to yield against eventual

Horse of the Year Authentic and crossed the wire in front by a

neck to win the second-fastest Preakness in history and give her

trainer his first Preakness victory.

AI think I had maybe 700 text messages on my phone,@ McPeek

said with a laugh. @Look, when you win everybody texts you and

when you lose, nobody does. But you know, she made it all

happen. Without her, none of it happens.@

McPeek added that he was thrilled to share the experience

with longtime client Peter Callahan.

APeter is one of the most special people I=ve ever worked for,@

he said. AHe really understands the game. His persistence with

me is really the reason why we=re here. He has let me buy some

slow horses too and I couldn=t be happier for a guy like him to

have her.@

While the stars all aligned for Swiss Skydiver during her Eclipse

Award-winning 3-year-old campaign, she came back at four to

win the GI Beholder Mile S. in March but then several

unfortunate circumstances got in the way of the original plan for

her 2021 campaign. However, McPeek said he will not let those

disruptions get in the way of him celebrating the champion=s

many accomplishments.

Swiss Skydiver sells as Hip 246 at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Sarah Andrew

AWe would have liked to have had a better 4-year-old year, but

you couldn=t have had a better 3-year-old year, maybe in the

history of 3-year-old fillies,@ he said. AShe=s just a tough filly. She

loves her food and you don=t get many like that. With colts

maybe you do; fillies are a little

more sensitive, but she is as

sturdy as I=ve ever seen and may

ever will see.@

Swiss Skydiver will enter the

ring at Fasig-Tipton as a six-time

grade stakes-winning champion

with earnings of over $2.2

million.

AWe=re thrilled to have a filly of

the quality of Swiss Skydiver

entered in the sale,@

Fasig-Tipton=s Boyd Browning

said. AShe truly is the complete

packageBunbelievable race

record, demonstrated brilliance

on a number of occasions, but

also demonstrated the durability and consistency that truly

defines a great filly.@

Browning added that he believes Swiss Skydiver offers all the

qualities the buyers as Fasig-Tipton will be seeking.

ABreeders today are desiring durability, consistency and

toughness,@ he said. AShe=s a throwback. She trained hard, she

ran hard, she answered every bell. She was an exceptional

racehorse and had that grit and

determination that I think she is

likely to pass on to her offspring

as well.@

For McPeek, watching Swiss

Skydiver as she embarks on her

broodmare career reminds him

of another one of his talented

trainees from years ago.

ATake Charge Lady [Dehere]

had that kind of talent and ended

up being Broodmare of the Year,@

he said. AI would wager that Swiss

Skydiver will be every bit as good

of a broodmare as she was a

racehorse because she=s

extremely intelligent and she=s

just a kind soul to be around. On the physical [aspect], she=s just

so big and strong. She=s a filly that would be ideal in that you

could breed her to a list of stallions.@ Cont. p8

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 8 OF 17 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • OCTOBER 11, 2021

For Browning, much of Swiss Skydiver=s potential for success as

a broodmare is found by looking back on the accomplishments

of the only other two Preakness-winning fillies from the last 100

years.

AWe all remember Rachel Alexandra--one of the all-time greats

of our industry,@ he said. AShe produced a Grade I winner in a

very limited number of foals and also produced a stallion who is

having success at the racetrack right now too. The other filly to

win the Preakness in the last 100 years is Nellie Morse and she

produced a champion in her own right and has become a very

influential broodmare.@

Swiss Skydiver will sell as Hip 246 with the Runnymede Farm

consignment on Nov. 9 at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale, but

for now McPeek is enjoying his final days with his history-making

filly as she begins the transition period at Magdelena Farm--the

location where she was once saddled for the very first time.

AWe=ve really been blessed to be around a horse like her,@ he

said. AThey=re few and far between and you really have to

appreciate them when they come into your life. I think we did

take advantage of all that and spent time with her. I got a

chance to bond with her really well. It=s going to be tough,

because we love being around her. She=s a really special filly.@

Tiz the Bomb broke through the gate before the start and had

to overcome a wide post, but those obstacles proved no matter

as the improving colt picked up his second straight stakes win in

Sunday's GII Castle & Key Bourbon S. at Keeneland, punching his

ticket for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

Easily the most expensive progeny of his sire to sell in 2020

when hammering for $330,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Selected

Yearling Sale, the bay only beat one horse home debuting over

five furlongs on the Churchill dirt May 14, but improved

drastically stretching out to a mile in an Ellis off-the-turfer July 2,

cruising to a 14 1/4-length graduation. Stepping up in his first

start on turf and initial try against winners to annex the

Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile S. Sept. 6, Tiz the Bomb was

made a fractional favorite in this full 14-horse field despite

breaking through his stall and running off for about a furlong

before being corralled and reloaded.

Finding a good spot racing in the clear in fourth behind

fractions of :22.94 and :47.54, he got shuffled back a bit midway

around the far turn and appeared to be spinning his wheels in

sixth as the field straightened for home. Starting to find his best

stride passing the three-sixteenths marker, Tiz the Bomb drew

alongside a trio of battling leaders a furlong out, forged to the

front soon after and inched clear to prevail. Stolen Base rallied

late to get into second.

AIt=s not a good omen, typically, and yeah, it makes a trainer

nervous when it happens, but [jockey] Brian [Hernandez] did a

great job wrangling him up and keeping him under control,@

winning trainer Ken McPeek said of Tiz a Bomb breaking through

the gate. AIt=s worse if he comes off or something like that. This

horse has got a lot of talent and we=re fortunate to have a guy

like Brian who handles things on the oval. He does a great job.@

AWe were ready, we were set up, and as the last horse was

walking in, I turned his head to set him to where we could leave

the gate in good order,@ related Hernandez. AHe got a little

anxious and just charged forward one step and the gate popped

open. Most of the time when that happens, horses have a hard

time recovering from it, but when we finally reloaded and he

left the gate in good order the second time, we were able to get

around the first turn in good order. I was really confident in him,

and he took care of it from there.@

The win capped a big weekend at Keeneland for McPeek,

whose Rattle N Roll (Connect) ran away to an impressive success

in Saturday's GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity. McPeek, however,

said that Rattle N Roll may pass on the Breeders' Cup while

indicating that Tiz the Bomb will be on a plane to Del Mar.

AI think for this horse definitely the Breeders= Cup Juvenile

[Turf] is ideal,@ he commented. AEverything happens for a

reason. You could have made the case that Tiz the Bomb could

have run yesterday for sure, and Rattle N Roll--of course, they=re

apples and oranges. It=s a high-level problem we=ve got right

now. We=re just going to enjoy this, relish the moment and

make those decisions as we get closer.@

W.S. Farish's ascending homebred Royal Flag rallied to a

convincing win in Sunday's GII Beldame S. at Belmont, her third

graded stakes conquest in her last five starts.

Graduating second out by eight lengths in the Aqueduct mud

in December of 2019, the chestnut repeated by nine lengths in a

Gulfstream allowance/optional claimer and made it three

straight with a score in a similar spot last May at Churchill.

Disappointing somewhat with a distant third in the GIII Molly

Pitcher S., she was a close runner-up in the GIII Shuvee S. and

Lady's Secret S. before breaking through with her first black-type

success in the GIII Turnback the Alarm H. at the Big A. Second by

a head in the GIII Baird Doubledogdare S. making her 5-year-old

debut Apr. 16 at Keeneland, she flew late to capture the Shuvee

July 25 at Saratoga before running a narrow third in the GI

Personal Ensign S. there Aug. 28.

Pounded down to odds-on here, Royal Flag settled in fifth as

second choice and 2020 Beldame heroine Horologist dictated

terms through comfortable splits of :23.97 and :48.54. Creeping

closer while tipping into the clear as three-quarters went up in

1:13.03, she drifted to the center of the track as heads pointed

for home, swept past Horologist just inside the eighth pole and

drew clear under hand urging for a much-the-best triumph.

Horologist dug in to hold off pace rival Miss Marissa for second.

AShe broke really well. We were up a little bit in the race

today,@ said winning rider Joel Rosario. ASometimes, when

there's no speed, she can be up a little bit. It looked like she was

very comfortable, and we were just waiting for the time to come

out and let her do her thing. I wanted to be out [wide]. When

she passes horses she can hang a little bit. I feel like if I get her

away from them, she's more focused at that point. So, I stayed

out there. If she has another horse there [beside her], she'll just

stay there.@

AThis year she=s obviously taken a big step forward,@ added

Dan Stupp, assistant to winning trainer Chad Brown. AShe=s

trained better than ever and she=s been to all of our divisions.

Everyone has done a great job of developing her. She=s in peak

form and Rosario gets along quite well with her. I=m sure the

Farishes are thrilled with her progress as well and the black type

that Chad has been able to develop into her. We=ll see what=s

next for her. Off that race, I=m sure Chad and Mr. Farish will

consider the Breeders= Cup [Distaff]. We=ll get her back and see

how she comes out of it, and they=ll come up with a plan.@

Pedigree Notes:

One of 100 stakes winners and 50 graded stakes winners for

Lane's End 22-year-old star Candy Ride, Royal Flag is the third

black-type winner out of her dam, following full-brother Eagle

and half-brother Catalina Cruiser, who entered stud at Lane's

End last year. Sea Gull, a $270,000 purchase by Farish at Fasig-

Tipton Saratoga in 2007, has an unraced juvenile full-sister to

the winner named Song of the Sea and produced a colt by

Quality Road this term before being bred to Into Mischief.

Jump Sucker Stable's Slipstream backed up a sharp maiden

victory earlier in the meet with a score in the GIII Futurity S.

Sunday at Belmont, a Win and You're In qualifier for the GII

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

Debuting locally over six furlongs on grass, the $170,000

Keeneland September purchase ran an even fifth after hitting

the gate at the start, then faced more early trouble in a Saratoga

off-the-turfer July 30 before finishing a distant third. Cruising to

a 5 1/4-length graduation going seven panels here Sept. 18, the

dark bay was made the second choice here and was checked

several times in the opening furlong to be relegated to last

behind a :22.39 quarter. Advancing while saving ground on the

turn, he awaited room in early stretch, squeezed through at the

rail at the furlong grounds, tipped into the two path soon after

and overhauled pace-dueling longshot Run Curtis Run in deep

stretch to prevail. Even-money favorite Chi Town Lady

(Verrazano) was a no-factor sixth.

AI=m very happy,@ said winning trainer Christophe Clement. AHe

belongs to Jump Sucker--a partnership that belongs to [NYRA

board member] Stephen Duncker and three of his friends. I

haven=t had a really good horse for them since Governor Malibu

a few years ago. I thought he would be a bit closer to the pace,

but I train and let Joel [Rosario] ride. He rides better than I do

and I train better than he does. He said he got really slammed

coming out the gate. Otherwise, I thought he was cruising and

going well. I love the way he finished. He was very impressive

when he broke his maiden here last time.@

Clement also said that his preference is to run in the one-mile

GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf despite now having a fees-paid

berth to the Juvenile Turf Sprint.

AIf it=s up to me, yes. We have to see how he comes out of it

and be sure the owners are on board and that everything goes

well. I=d like to go [Juvenile Turf Sprint] with Derrynane, who

won [the Woodbine Cares] at Woodbine last month. I still don=t

know if they=ll invite her or not. I prefer six [furlongs] going into

a race that=s a mile at Del Mar on firm than a mile and a

seven furlongs to a mile.@

Sacred Life just overtakes Field Pass | Chelsea Durand

A Group 3 winner in his native France, the bay had just one

stakes win to his name since coming across the pond, in last

summer's Oceanport S. at Monmouth, but had been knocking on

the door of graded stakes glory, never finishing worse than

fourth in 11 U.S. starts., a stretch that included a third-place run

in the GI Maker's Mark Mile S. this April. Last seen finishing

second in a high-class allowance/optional claimer Aug. 29 at

Saratoga, he was made the fourth choice in an evenly-matched

field here and settled last but one in the field of nine as Field

Pass went clear through a :23.83 quarter and inched further

away past a :48.32 half. Stuck in a bit of traffic while given his

cue approaching the lane, the ridgling appeared to have too

much to do as late as the sixteenth pole, but flew home in the

final 50 yards to get up in the shadow of the wire.

AHe has no speed early on and I had to ride him,@ said winning

rider Jose Ortiz. AAt the six furlongs, I started pushing on him

and he was coming little by little. I knew sooner or later he

would pick it up and he picked up nicely around the half-mile

and then I just wanted for Rosario [Joel, aboard Breaking the

Rules] to go and I followed him. I had a lot of room to work with

[moving inside of Manny Franco aboard L=Imperator in the

stretch run] so I decided to do it. He was flying late. I just had to

keep him straight.@

Art of Almost closed from off the pace to upset Sunday's

GIII Ontario Matron S. at Woodbine. Eagerly away from post 1,

the dark bay was eased back to last--only about three lengths

from the front--through a pedestrian opening quarter in :25.25.

Still at the back following a half in :49.90, the D.J. Stable runner

was given her cue by Emma-Jayne Wilson approaching the

quarter pole and swung out several paths wide for the stretch

drive. Only about a length off the pace, the 8-1 chance ground

her way to the front midstretch and ran off to win by a 1 1/4

lengths over stablemate and 3-5 choice Skygaze (American

Pharoah) was runner up, while Juxtapose (Verrazano) stayed on

for third. Cont. p15

Art of Almost collects her first stakes winMichael Burns

AI wanted to get an outside run,@ explained Wilson. AShe can

be a little quirky out of the one-hole and I was looking to

position myself where I was in range, but could also work my

way to the outside, so that I could just get her going around the

turn.@

She added, AAs we straightened away, you can see I moved up

to them at the top of the stretch and she wasn't even quite

ready in full flight yet. So, I was pretty confident when we

measured up to Patrick [Husbands, Skygaze] and, when I really

reached for it and asked her, she gave me every she had.@

Conditioned by Canadian Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield

earlier in her career, Art of Almost was secured by her current

connections at Keeneland in January and marked her debut for

Mark Casse with a fifth in Gulfstream's GIII Honey Fox S. in

February. Seventh in the Sand Springs S. at the Hallandale oval in

March, she was given some time off before resurfacing with a

close-up third in an optional claimer at Woodbine July 3.

Switched to the main for her next start, she got up for the

narrow score over Afleet Katherine (Afleet Alex) July 24 before

finishing fourth behind winner Skygaze in the Sept. 12 Bel

Mahone S.

Pedigree Notes:

With her Ontario Matron win Sunday, Art of Almost becomes

the 151 black-type winner and 89th graded/group scorer for her

prolific sire Dansili. The first foal out of Reimpose, Art of Almost

RNA'd at Arqana as a weanling in 2016 before going unsold at

Fasig-Tipton's Florida sale in 2018 and again as a horse of racing

age the following November. Offered this past January at

Keeneland, she realized $290,000 from D.J. Stable. The winner's

dam, Reimpose, is also responsible for an unraced 3-year-old

filly by American Pharoah and a juvenile filly by Classic Empire.

She was bred to Justify this season. The 10-year-old mare is a

daughter of European highweight older route mare Rougeur

(Blushing Groom {Fr}), also responsible for dual Grade I-winning

Flute (Seattle Slew), herself the dam of GSW and GISP Filimbi

(Mizzen Mast). This represents the extended family of European

Heading into Sunday's GIII Durham Cup at Woodbine, it

appeared to many to be a match up between Classic winners:

2020 Queen's Plate S. hero Mighty Heart (Dramedy) and 2019

GI Belmont S. victor Sir Winston, trained by Mark Casse. The Hall

of Famer was also represented by another legitimate contender,

Tap It to Win (Tapit), who bested Josie Carroll's reigning Horse

of the Year in his latest start. On race day, the money duly

poured in on the top three, however, Special Forces apparently

hadn't read the headlines. Cont. p16

Special Forces | Michael Burns

Coming into Sunday's race, the gelding hadn't visited the

winner's circle since winning the GII Autumn S. in the fall of

2019, in large part a result of having spent the entire 2020

season on the sidelines. In two starts this year, he hit the board

both times despite finishing behind all three of his main Durham

Cup rivals on those prior occasions. Marking his return from his

1 1/2-year hiatus Aug. 19, the 6-year-old finished runner-up to

Sir Winston in a $62,500 optional claimer at the Etobicoke oval

before rounding out the trifecta behind Tap It to Win and

Mighty Heart in the GIII Seagram Cup S. Sept. 11.

Sent off at 6-1 this time, Special Forces, with Justin Stein in the

irons for the first time, was taken back to last of five as Tap It to

Win led through an opening quarter in :24.17 as Halo Again, also

returning after more than a year away from the races, was a

close second. Meanwhile, Mighty Heart and Sir Winston sat third

and fourth, respectively. Tap It to Win continued to set the pace

through a half in :47.96 as the field began to constrict

approaching the quarter pole. The widest of all turning for

home, Special Forces loomed as Halo Again led narrowly while

Tap It to Win began to weaken and Sir Winston took his shot in

between rivals. Carrying the most momentum late, Special

Forces forged clear to score by a half-length over Sir Winston,

who held Halo Again safe in third. Mighty Heart was fourth and

Tap It to Win rounded out the field. Despite a few anxious

moments stemming from a stewards= inquiry involving the top

three finishers, the order of finish was allowed to stand

unchanged.

AI worked him a couple times and he=s a lot of horse,@ said

Stein. AI was just the lucky jock to get on him. [Trainer] Kevin

[Attard] and his team have done an amazing job with him. He

crushed today. He=s a champ.@

Attard added, AWe had to be very patient with him. Obviously,

the COVID season kind of hampered his chances of getting back

last year, but we elected to kind of back off and give him the

rest of the year off. He was disrespected today, but this horse

was probably one of the better older horses on the grounds

here in 2019 and kind of got disrespected todayYbut showed his

true colors.@

Pedigree Notes:

Having already established herself in the breeding shed,

Special Me is responsible for the talented dual graded stakes

winning and Grade I placed Stonetastic (Mizzen Mast), an earner

of over $850,000 through her four-season racing career. It

wasn't long before the daughter of Unbridled's Song came up

with another ace in millionaire Gift Box (Twirling Candy), who

registered his biggest career win in the GI Santa Anita H. More

recently, she produced a filly by Medaglia d'Oro in 2018 and a

filly by Into Mischief the following season. She was bred back to

the Spendthrift stallion this term.

GALILEAN TO STAND AT HIDDEN LAKE FARM Multiple stakes winner Galilean (Uncle Mo--Fresia, by El Prado

{Ire}), who hails from the female family of the influential Smart

Strike, has been retired from racing and will take up his new

career as a stallion at Hidden Lake Farm in New York, where he

will stand the 2022 breeding season for a stud fee of $7,000

S&N.

AWe are proud of what Galilean accomplished on the

racetrack,@ said West Point Thoroughbreds= Terry Finley, Aand

we=re excited for him to write his next chapter as a stallion. He

was precocious, fast, and he proved his class repeatedly in top

type of dangerous miler speed to make his mark as a stallion.

We are committed to supporting Galilean with some of our top

mares, and we=re excited to offer him to New York breeders.@

Campaigned by West Point Thoroughbreds, Denise Barker, and

William Sandbrook, Galilean was bought by West Point

Thoroughbreds for $600,000 out of Eddie Woods= consignment

at the 2018 Barretts 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. He picked up

victories in the Barretts Juvenile S. and King Glorious S. as a

juvenile and added a score in the California Cup Derby as well as

a third in the GII Rebel S. at three in 2019. He also captured the

Soi Phet S., California Dreamin S. and California Flag H. last year.

The bay, who was trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, retires with a

Hat Creek Racing's Averly Jane powered home a

much-the-best winner in Keeneland's Indian Summer S., a 'Win

and You're In' race for the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint

at Del Mar Nov. 5. Undefeated in three prior starts for trainer

Wesley Ward, including a commanding score in Saratoga's

Skidmore S. Aug. 20, she was installed the 4-5 choice while

facing the boys and getting blinkers off here. To the front like a

shot, she rolled through opening splits of :21.64 and :44.50.

Turning on all boosters late, Averly Jane crossed the wire a

commanding four-length winner over stablemate Kaufymaker.

With the win, Averly Jane set a new stakes record of 1:02.65 for

5 1/2 furlongs. Cont. p2

by his first stakes winner, God of Love became number two, and

winner number nine overall, as he broke his maiden in the

lucrative Cup and Saucer S. at Woodbine. Trainer Mark Casse

and co-owner Gary Barber made up the exacta for good

measure.

Faring no better than seventh as the 2-1 chalk in his main-track

sprint unveiling Sept. 12, the chestnut broke last before settling

in towards the back of the pack as favored stablemate Fast Feet

showed the way. God of Love still had lots of work to do after six

and leveled off in midstretch to kick on to the wire.

The Sky Is Falling turned the table on a number of these foes

to become the first black-type winner for her freshman sire (by

Tapit). A debut winner at 2-5 odds going 4 1/2 panels here

Sept. 3, the dark bay wheeled back in 15 days to be fifth behind

Fancy Her Up, O K Smarty Pants and two other re-opposing foes

in the Rachel's Turn S. Let go at longshot odds while stretching

out to two turns, The Sky Is Falling settled in midpack while

saving ground into the first bend. She was scrubbed on between

rivals to take closer order leaving the backside, ranged up three

deep into the stretch and leveled off best to out-finish O K

Smarty Pants. The winner's owner David Raim bought her

yearling half-brother by Tapwrit for $82,000 at the Fasig-Tipton

ALL LUCK (f, 2, Quality Road--My Lady Luck, by Hard Spun), the

Aother@ Brad Cox runner signed on here, made the early lead

and kept finding late defeat winners Sunday. Tenth in her turf

unveiling at Ellis Aug. 14, the dark bay looked like a different

horse with Lasix added as she pressed and prevailed by 2 3/4

lengths in a rained-off two-turn test at Indiana Grand Sept. 15.

Flattered when the runner-up from that race came back to air

by five lengths, she was let go at 7-1 while her stablemate and

P.G. Johnson S. runner-up Let's Be Clear (Munnings) vied for

favoritism with GIII Pocahontas S. fourth Code for Success

(Honor Code). All Luck was hustled away from the gate by

Florent Geroux to seize the early advantage with Manasota

Sunset (Outwork) prompting. She posted splits of :23.80 and

:48.20, but was hard ridden heading for home as Manasota

Sunset ranged up on even terms and put a half-length in front.

It turned out All Luck was only playing possum, however, as she

re-broke at the top of the lane and pulled away late to post the

2 1/4-length decision. Code for Success rallied for fourth from

far back, while Let's Be Clear never factored in sixth. The winner

five furlongs May 29 before improving a position while

stretching to a mile over the Woodbine lawn for the Sept. 19 GI

Summer S. Slightly awkwardly off the blocks this time, the 2-5

choice headed Hagemeister Street (Nyquist), who got first jump

but was soon caught by the favorite as they cut out an opening

quarter mile in :23.71. Moving easily through a half in :47.83,

the handsome bay was still in front as stablemate Luckman

anywhere near as frenetic as it was during Book 1, then there

will be plenty of happy breeders and vendors in Newmarket this

week.

In a fashion particularly seen at elite sales, Book 1 was perhaps

a little slowly into stride last Tuesday, as buyers and consignors

alike tried to get a handle on the market. But the trade

strengthened day by day, and if there weren't quite as many of

the type of lots which bring the ring to an awed hush as the

price climbs ever skyward, the most encouraging aspect of the

three sessions was a high median throughout, indicating strong

demand in the >middle' market. Of course the middle market

varies sale by sale, and it becomes increasingly important as this

week goes on as we try to ascertain the level of demand across

the range of yearling sectors. Signs have been largely

encouraging since the yearling sales got underway in August,

however, and there's no reason to expect that to change this

week, certainly not for Book 2 anyway.

In The Eye Of The Sales Storm Cont. from p1

Last week the demand from American buyers was stronger

than ever, which has been a growing trend in Book 1. Notably,

the Sea The Stars (Ire) colt bought by Bill Farish's Woodford

Racing from Watership Down Stud for 1.2 million gns will remain

in the UK at least for the early part of his racing career, while

Craig Bernick of Florida's Glen Hill Farm, who has a number of

horses in training in Europe, indicated that he is likely to start his

Kingman filly, purchased for 650,000gns, in Europe, too. The

daughter of Ring The Bell (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) typified the hugely

international aspect of the modern-day bloodstock industry:

bred by Australian John Camilleri at Hazelwood Bloodstock just

outside Newmarket, she is now owned by an American and is

likely to go into training in Ireland or France.

Along with around 50 yearlings purchased last week to go to

America, at least another eight will be heading to Australia. The

international demand for European bloodlines is a double-edged

sword, however. On the one hand, it pays a great compliment to

breeders, particularly in Britain and Ireland, who have

developed such renowned families which can produce runners

to be competitive in the world's best turf races.

But we must beware of a potential equine talent drain, which

is now significant when taking into account the

horses-in-training market, both public and private sales, for

runners with decent form. British owners will find it especially

hard to turn down lucrative offers when prize-money levels

remain so low, and despite the warning bell having been

sounding for years now, those in charge of British racing

continue to turn a deaf ear. There's only so much that can be

blamed on Covid, and this dire situation predated the pandemic.

Checks and Balances With Shadwell having announced an impending serious

reduction of stock some weeks in advance of the October Sale, it

was clear that the name that has become a bedrock of the

buyers' sheets at Tattersalls over many years would not feature

in 2021. Prior to Sheikh Hamdan's death in March, his Shadwell

Estates had been a significant investor at the Orby Sale and at

Book 1, but it is perhaps Book 2 at which the absence will be

most keenly felt, as Shadwell has been increasingly prominent

among the leading buyers in the part of the sale over the last

decade with some 47 million gns spent on 347 Book 2 yearlings

during that time. Cont. p3

Juddmonte and Cheveley Park Stud have both lost key figures

this year with the deaths of Prince Khalid Abdullah and David

long-term planning and made

select purchases of Book 1 fillies

to their broodmare bands

eventually.

There are clearly gaps to fill but

Sheikha Fatima Bint Hazza Bin

Zayed Al Nayhan's Al Shira'aa

Farms has been a welcome

addition to the list of buyers at

Goffs and Tattersalls, with some

blue-blooded fillies having been

recruited as foundation mares for

her operation at Meadow Court

Stud in Ireland. As a statement of

intent, signing up half-sisters to

Waldgeist (GB), Poetic Flare (Ire)

and Mother Earth (Ire) is a pretty strong one.

Another reason to be cheerful, for now at least, can be

gleaned from the fact that we are in a golden era for stallions in

this part of the world. Yes, the sun has now set on the

remarkable Galileo (Ire), but his own son is rising so fast that it is

hard to see Frankel (GB) not becoming champion sire for the

first time this year. Galileo's half-brother Sea The Stars (Ire) was

a little unfortunate that Frankel

came along so soon after his own

magnificent racing season of 2009

because he truly would have been

a standout racehorse in any other

era. He too remains a force to be

reckoned with as a stallion and it

was rather pleasing to see two of

Her appearance in the ring on

Thursday also brought with it a

rare sales visit by Robert Barnett,

whose family has maintained a

stalwart presence among the

has hinged largely on the equine family from which this filly

"We've been in this racket a long time," said Barnett with a

smile after his filly sold to Sheikh MohammedBBwho was

present at Tattersalls throughout Book 1BBfor 1.5 million gns.

Since the sale of Fair Winter Farm in 2017, the Barnett mares

have resided at Newsells Park Stud, which was the leading

consignor at Book 1 with some excellent results both from their

own stock and that of their clients and partners, including

Gestut Ammerland and Andrew Stone of St Albans Bloodstock.

It's nothing new for Newsells Park to top Book 1BBJulian Dollar

and his team have pulled this off for the last four years running

and six times in totalBBbut this year was perhaps extra sweet as

it is the first with new stud owner Graham Smith-Bernal at the

helm.

A brief chat with Andrew Stone, breeder of the Group 1

winners God Given (GB) and Postponed (Ire), served as a good

reminder of the level of investment, both financial and

emotional, required in producing these horses. After selling a

Frankel (GB) half-brother to Mrs Sippy for 925,000gns to

Coolmore, Stone appeared close to tears and admitted that he

felt quite emotional watching the horse go through the ring.

Breeders of all sizes need to sell some stock to keep the wheels

turning, but even when great financial reward is involved, only

the hardest of hearts will find it easy to part with animals whose

very existence has, in many cases, been carefully planned for

generations. It is clearly bittersweet to see them go, even when

the price is right.

What Next? Sometimes updates go your way, and sometimes they don't. In

the case of the Saxon Warrior (Jpn) filly out of Archangel Gabriel

(Arch) sold last week by Stauffenberg Bloodstock, there was a

bit of both. Her half-sister Ville De Grace (GB) (Le Havre {Ire})

won a listed race for owner/breeders Hunscote Stud and Chris

Humber on Sept. 21, but the day after the yearling sold for

325,000gns, her 3-year-old sister stepped up again to land the

G3 Pride S. at Newmarket.

Ahead of the start of Book 2, perfect timing was kept by

Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}). At the time of the catalogues

being printed, the ,120,000 Arqana Breeze-up graduate was still

unraced but she's been a busy girl in the interim and has now

won two of her four starts, including Saturday's G2 Criterium de

Maisons-Laffitte. It will come as no surprise that the filly was

bred by Tally-Ho Stud, who can't stop producing winners this

season. Malavath's full-brother can be found in box 633 in the

Right Yard, and will sell on Monday as lot 552.

season's leading juvenile fillies, Sandrine (GB), by another son of

Kitten's Joy in Bobby's Kitten, is one of four yearlings from

Kirsten Rausing's Staffordstown draft (lot 952). Like Tally-Ho

Stud, Rausing's Lanwades Stud has been represented by winners

left, right and centre this season, with Sandrine making a

significant contribution by winning the G3 Albany S. at Royal

Ascot, followed by the G2 Duchess of Cambridge S.

Ebro River (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) and Bayside Boy (Ire) (New

Bay {GB}) are two group-winning colts to have graduated from

last year's sale at 75,000gns and 200,000gns apiece. Sadly, both

their yearling half-siblings have been withdrawn from the

October Sale, but there are bound to be plenty of gems to be

found throughout the week at Park Paddocks as Europe's largest

yearling sale continues. Starting from 10 a.m. each day, around

800 yearlings are set to sell in Book 2 over the next three days,

RACING=S SUSTAINABILITY, TV COVERAGE

AMONG TOPICS OF IFHA CONFERENCEBy Kelsey Riley

The International Conference of Horseracing Authorities was

held virtually in 2021 for the second consecutive year owing to

challenges presented by the global pandemic, and speakers

during the 55th edition of the conferenceBorganized by the

International Federation of Horseracing Authorities--examined

racing=s global evolution and future challenges. The conference

in its entirety can be accessed via the video link above or as a

podcast.

Allen Hershkowitz, environmental science advisor to the New

York Yankees and founding director and chairman of Sports and

Sustainability International, spoke about the threats presented

by climate change and how racing can put sustainability into

practice.

AWe are in an urgent situation,@ Hershkowitz stressed. ASome

scientists have begun referring to the circumstances that we=re

in as a human extinction event. As temperatures go up, right

now there is 100% likelihood that we will go from a 1.1 degree

celsius temperature increase to a 1.5 degree celsius

temperature increase by 2040. There is a more than 50% chance

that will go to three or four degrees celsius by 2080.

AIt=s impossible to imagine the catastrophes that will result

from that level of temperature increase. None of this is good for

horse racing or horse farms in general. We already know that

many races have been cancelled because of heat, many tracks

have been damaged because of floods. Many races and tracks

are suffering from drought, and of course many races and tracks

are affected by fires.@

While climate change is certainly a hot topic, Hershkowitz was

quick to stress that sustainability is about far more. Cont. p7

IFHA Conference Cont.

AWhen we speak about sustainability, it=s important to

remember it isn=t just about climate action,@ he said. AIn 2015,

the United Nations brought together 198 countries to agree on a

set of Sustainable Development Goals. There are 17 of them,

and they include poverty alleviation, eliminating hunger, good

health; when we talk about sustainability, it=s not just about

climate.@

Hershkowitz provided examples that some major league sports

teams and venues are taking to address sustainability, and the

positive impact it can have on their bottom line. The Orlando

Magic Basketball team cut its energy use by 25% for $750,000 in

savings annually. The Seattle Mariners cut natural gas use by

66% and electricity use by 30%, resulting in $500,000 in savings

annually. The Staples Center, home to professional basketball

and hockey teams in Los Angeles, saved $28,000 annually and

cut out the use of seven million gallons of water by installing 178

waterless urinals.

And it isn=t just American sports that are making strides.

ARight now, every professional sports league in the United

States and in Europe has a sustainability programme,@

Hershkowitz said. AThe International Olympic Committee has

produced a spectacular environmental sustainability strategy

that goes to 2030 and beyond. It obligates venues that want to

bid on the Olympics to implement environmentally intelligent

practices.@

Hershkowitz laid out some of the ways in which racing can

work on its sustainability.

AOne of the most important things I think a sports organization

can do at the moment is to make sure your employees at your

venues are safe,@ he said. AWe=re still struggling with a global

pandemic. Sustainable development goal number three is good

health. Economic health is dependant on human health, and

human health is dependant on planetary health. But planetary

health is also dependant on economic health. If we can=t make

investments into new technologies we=re not going to work our

way through the various ecological crises we face.

AHorse racing is fundamentally connected to the agriculture

sector, and the agriculture sector is really getting stressed

through climate impacts. There is no one thing that any racing

organization can do that=s going to get us out of this situation,

unfortunately, but every little thing matters. What we need to

do is have the courage to do small things.@

Those small things could include the installation of electric

vehicle chargers at racecourses, using catering services that

utilize sustainability menus and support local food producers,

and digitalizing media guides or racecards. Cont. p8

Hershkowitz stressed the importance of establishing a baseline

so that an organization knows what its current impacts are and

what it is working towards. He said two terms that all sports

organizations should become

familiar with are

Adematerialization@ and

Adecarbonization.@

ADecarbonization is about how

can we reduce our emissions of

carbon through energy and

procurement, like how we

supply food,@ he explained.

ADematerialization is about how

can we reduce the need to buy

physical products that can be

supplied digitally.@

AThe single most important

thing we can do to promote

sustainability is to change

cultural attitudes and

expectations about how to

relate to the planet,@ Hershkowitz added. AHow should we relate

to the ecosystems that give us water to drink? That give us air to

breathe? We=re treating the atmosphere like a sewer. This is

why your organization having a conversation about this issue is

so important.

ARegulators are increasingly looking at how organizations are

managing their energy and their

climate. Investors don=t want to

be associated with organizations

that aren=t being sustainability

smart. For future legitimacy, the

social license to operate, taking

responsibility for your

sustainability impacts is

fundamental.@

Horses round the clubhouse turn at Saratoga | Sarah Andrew

IFHA Conference Cont.

A large leap was made during the early months of the

pandemic last year, when American racing continued while most

sports worldwide came to a standstill.

ABecause there was such an

absence of live sports, we were

able to elevate our content from

Belmont and Saratoga from a

network called FOX Sports 2,

which is in about 50 million

homes, to FOX Sports 1, which at

that time was in closer to 80

million homes,@ Mulvihill said.

AOur viewership went up by over

100%; wagering was way up

during the pandemic. It=s delicate

to talk about taking advantage of

that situation because it=s

obviously a worldwide challenge,

but I think the reality is that as a

business, horse racing in the U.S. was able to take advantage of

the circumstances and enjoy some growth. And we=ve been able

to continue that into 2021 as the pandemic has abated a bit.@

FOX earlier this year exercised an option it held to become a

25% equity partner in NYRA=s advanced deposit wagering

platform NYRA Bets, and Mulvihill said he thinks there is a direct

correlation between that partnership and the exponential

growth in wagering at Saratoga this summerBall sources handle

on New York=s premiere meeting

was $815-million, which cleared

the previous record by about

$100-million.

AI think it=s that equity piece

specifically that makes our

relationship unique,@ he said.

ATraditionally, the relationship

between media and horse racing

is a very traditional content and

advertising relationship. You pay a

rights fee for the content, you

produce it as well as you can, you

sell advertising against the

viewership of that content, and

that=s as far as it goes. Now that

we have the stake we have in NYRA Bets, it really incentivises us

to promote the wagering, assist in the mainstreaming of

wagering in the U.S. and to try to grow the asset value of NYRA

Bets in the U.S.@ Cont. p10

I really think that the way we produce

the future of sports television in the U.S.

I’d like to believe we’re setting a pretty

good example of incorporating wagering,

IFHA Conference Cont.

FOX has the option to acquire another 24.9% of NYRA Bets,

something Mulvihill said he believes will be exercised Ain the

relatively near future.@

FOX=s coverage is renowned

for striking a balance between

sophisticated handicapping

angles and traditional sports

programming, and Mulvihill said

that was the goal of the network

even before the deal was done

to buy into NYRA Bets.

AFrom the time we initiated

this content five years ago, our

intent was to do a daily

production that was really

specifically targeted at day in,

day out horseplayers and people

who put a significant amount of

money through the windows and

are the lifeblood of this

business,@ he said. AIf you look at

horse racing on American TV, there is the Triple Crown and the

Breeders= Cup that are held by NBC and they do a beautiful job

producing those events for a general sports viewership. There is

TVG, which is produced for a day in, day out horse playing

audience, but they=re producing a lot of tracks so they don=t get

to spend a lot of time on one

track in particular.

AWhat we wanted to do was

carve out an in between path

where we could focus on just

one track, one circuit, and really

devote the time and attention

we felt the NYRA tracks

deserved, and also elevate the

production value a bit. We very

much wanted to be open in

encouraging people to play the

game, open a NYRA Bets account

and engage in handicapping.@

Mulvihill said that FOX=s horse racing coverage could serve as

an example for other sports and programmes of how to weave

wagering angles into their coverage.

AI really think that the way we produce our shows is something

of a blueprint for the future of sports television in the U.S.,@ he

said. AI=d like to believe we=re setting a pretty good example of

incorporating wagering, recognizing that wagering is an

important part of the event, but also still primarily covering it as

a sports event first. I think 10 years from now, that=s how all

sports will be presented on American TV.@

Until recently, horse racing has held a monopoly as the only

American sporting event that accepted betting. While the

legalization of sports wagering can easily be viewed as a threat

to racing, Mulvihill said he sees it as an opportunity to promote

racing to a new audience.

AI think that=s already happening,@ he said. AI think it=s reflected

in those Saratoga figures we talked about earlier. I think that

indicates that there is a rediscovery of horse racing happening in

the U.S. I think the fact that we=ve had two Triple Crown winners

in the last decade helps. I think the opportunity that racing was

able to take advantage of during the peak of the pandemic

helps, and I think racing in some ways has been repositioned as

a great social activity and a great day out.@

AIt=s a pivotal moment for racing, and I think the industry in the

U.S. has capitalized on it,@ Mulvihill added. AI think the next step

in that transformation is going to be the introduction of HISA

[the Horse Racing Safety and Integrity Act, the legislation that

will regulate American racing on a national level] and letting the

public know that there are credible and meaningful safeguards

around safety and integrity so that when they do come to the

track to enjoy that day out, they know the horses and riders are

being well-cared for and that their wagering is being conducted

on an event that is held at the highest possible level of integrity.

AIf you combine all those thingsBthe safety and integrity, the

emphasis on racing as a fun social activity, the recent Triple

Crown winners and the momentum we have coming out of the

pandemic--it really is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for

horse racing.@

Mulvihill said he hopes FOX=s racing coverage expands beyond

the shores of the U.S. to encompass some of the sports greatest

events globally.

AWe would love to further the presence that we have in

international racing,@ he said. AI really want FOX Sports and our

networks to be the American home for the great events in

racing around the world. We=ve had great experiences with the

Dubai World Cup and the Saudi Cup, and we want to find ways

to bring more of that content to our networks.@ Cont. p12

Equine Welfare The advancement of equine welfare and aftercare of the

Thoroughbred racehorse is an area in which the industry has

made huge strides globally in recent years, and in which there

will always be work to do and room for improvement. Jamie

Stier, chair of the IFHA Horse Welfare Committee and Racing

Victoria=s executive general manager, integrity services, and Di

Arbuthnot, chief executive for Retraining of Racehorses and

chair of the International Forum for the Aftercare of Racehorses,

joined the conference to share updates on equine welfare and

aftercare.

Stier spoke on the importance and wide implications of

traceability of the Thoroughbred from birth through the

lifecycle.

ATraceability is a really interesting and hot topic at the

moment,@ he said. AIt has two components to it: there is the

welfare component, but there=s also the biosecurity component.

In a lot of countries biosecurity relates to prevention of disease

and being able to trace horses if there is an outbreak of disease,

which is in their best health interests, and of course welfare.

ABut if you look across the lifecycle of a horse, traceability is so

important because we need to know where our horses are. We

need to get a proper picture of where our horses are ending up.

It helps us identify gaps and all sorts of lifetime experiences of

the horse and how we can structure our programmes to support

horses. Traceability is imperative if we=re going to provide

proper care to our horses. Equally if we have good traceability

data, it enables us as a sport to be able speak positively,

comfortably and very assertively about our sport, what we are

doing and the provisions we=re providing our horses.@

Stier noted that Racing Victoria is allocating significant

resources to aftercare and welfare incentives, like providing

trainers access to sophisticated diagnostic tools to identify

potential injuries earlier; launching a platform for the

registration of ex-racehorses and providing grants to

programmes that can place off-track Thoroughbreds with less

post-racing athletic potential.

AWe=ve introduced programmes here in Victoria geared

towards assisting and incentivizing trainers to use the best

diagnostic tools available to them to ensure their horse receives

the best treatment during its racing career,@ Stier explained.

AWe=re also investing a lot in research that will help us to earlier

recognize the potential onset of lameness and cause of

lameness. All that is geared toward providing a second career

for the horse post-racing.@

AWe=ve launched an off the track platform where people are

now registering their horses,@ he added.

Arbuthnot noted there has

been a steep increase in the

numbers of ex-racehorses

competing in disciplines like

dressage in Britain, and that

there has been a concerted effort

to showcase the athletic abilities

of ex-racehorses and to create a

demand for them in the sport

horse community.

AIt=s about contacts within the

industry and within the equestrian world to try and build this

programme and to make the Thoroughbred fashionable,@ she

explained. AWhen RoR started, racehorses might have been

taken on by professionals and got to a high level, but they

weren=t popular with the equestrian world. Having seen one of

the very good trainers at Blenheim last week, he said RoR had

changed the programme in the equestrian world; it was

revolutionary. And I think that=s because the professionals

helped us in those early days to make them popular, so now we

have a market.@

Arbuthnot reiterated how IFAR is working to advance aftercare

globally, which is especially important in light of recent damning

reports in the media in both Australia and Ireland about ex-

racehorses winding up in abattoirs.

AIFAR is a forum for discussion, for improving best practice and

getting out to all the racing jurisdictions around the world and

trying to encourage them to have some sort of aftercare

programme in place,@ she said. AThe group has put together an

aftercare toolkit, which is about lifetime management,

transitioning strategies, safety

nets, equine therapy and

community engagement,

Thoroughbred advocacy and

networking. We went to Japan in

those earlier days and they have

a wonderful programme in place

now. We=ve been engaged with

South Korea, and recently

Malaysia and we=re working with

the European racing jurisdictions

as well. France has come on

hugely in the last few years. We

are all working together to help

each other.@

Arbuthnot reiterated that Awe

are all associated@ with some of

the troubling reporting that has

surfaced in mainstream media, and that it is up to everyone in

racing to make aftercare a priority.

AWhatever happens anywhere around the world reflects on us

all, and that=s what we have to be aware of,@ she said. AWe must

all do more to help and work together to show racing cares. It=s

non-negotiable.

AThe average person watching racing is saying, >what happens

when they finish racing?= So we have to get that message out,

otherwise we won=t have a product. We won=t have racing in

years to come.@ Cont. p14

IFHA Conference Cont.

Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges succeeds Louis Romanet as

chairman of the IFHA following Romanet=s 27-year term, and he

likewise addressed the importance of looking to racing=s future

in his keynote address.

AThe 55th International Conference of the IFHA comes at a

most significant time for our sport and the world,@ said

Engelbrecht-Bresges. AWe face major macro challenges arising

from the pandemic and climate change. More than ever, we

must work together and harness the wealth of talent and

expertise within our membership to not only face these

challenges, but ensure that our sport thrives in the short,

medium, and long term.

AThis conference gives us the opportunity to look forward at

some key parts of the IFHA=s strategy for the future. We are

fortunate to have world-class speakers sharing their insights

regarding digitalisation and media, equine welfare, climate

change and sustainability.@

NEW BAY=S SEA BAY IMPRESSES IN

COLOGNE by Sean Cronin

Gestut Winterhauch=s 2-year-old colt Sea Bay (Ger) (New Bay

{GB}) graduated with a one-length win in his Aug. 22 debut over

seven furlongs at Hannover, but slipped to fourth when upped

to one mile for Dusseldorf=s Sept. 12 Listed Junioren Preis in his

only other start. He had finished behind the reopposing Ariolo

(Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}) and Millionaire (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger})

on stakes bow last time, but overturned that form and found

plenty more besides to make Sunday=s G3 Preis des

Winterfavoriten all his own as he took the one-mile Cologne

feature in supremely impressive style.

Sea Bay charted a wide course underneath the trees, in the

wake of stablemate Millionaire, along the backstraight and

made the cut across to join the main body of the field in second

approaching the home turn. Looming large on the bridle as the

69-10 chance=s rivals became increasingly flustered in the

straight, he was given a shake of the reins by Adrie de Vries just

inside the quarter-mile marker and unleashed immediate

acceleration, powering clear as the remainder appeared trapped

in slow motion to stop the clock in splendid isolation. Sea Bay

finished nine lengths ahead of Schwarzer Peter (Ger) (Neatico

{Ger}), sealing a first edition of Germany=s most prestigious

juvenile contest for trainer Henk Grewe, with Schwarzer Peter=s

Markus Klug-trained stablemates See Hector (Ger)

(Counterattack {Aus}) and Ariolo passing the post a head and

3/4-of-a-length further back in third and fourth. The nine-length

winning margin was the largest since Globus (Ger) Areion {Ger})

romped home by 10 lengths in 2008.

AThere was plenty of debate in the stable beforehand and his

work on Monday was so good that we went into the race with a

lot of confidence,@ Grewe told GaloppOnline. AIt was always the

plan to go to the outside, the tactics worked to perfection and

he won very impressively at the finish. He thoroughly deserved

it and is now entitled to have a winter break.@

G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten Cont.

Winning rider Adrie de Vries, after notching his this third win

in the race, added, AThe trainer made a good decision to apply

for the outer box. Good horses put you on the right track and,

when I came into the straight with my hands full, I only had to

press the button and he was gone.@

Pedigree Notes Sea Bay is the third of four foals and second black-type scorer

produced by a winning full-sister to stakes-winning G2 Oleander-

Rennen placegetter San Salvador (Ger) (Lord of England {Ger})

and G3 Deutsches St Leger runner-up Saratino (Ger) (Lord of

Appleby also provided an update on G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas

runner-up Master Of The Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who will run

in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. The G3 Craven S. hero was last

seen running third in the G2 Joel S. at Newmarket on Sept. 24.

Godolphin stablemate and Group 3 winner Creative Force (Ire)

(Dubawi {Ire}) will also be in action on QIPCO Champions Day,

but in the G1 Champions Sprint.

AThe way the weather forecast is potentially looking, Master

Of The Seas will run in the QEII and Creative Force will head to

the Champions Sprint. Two handy horses,@ he said. ACreative

Force is learning how to sprint now. We=ve seen what he can do

over seven. He=s been competitive at six and he=s still learning.

As we all know, dropping back into sprinting divisions at that

level it takes a bit of getting the hang of, but he=s getting there

and he=ll go into the weekend a big player.

AMaster Of The Seas has definitely come on for that run in the

Joel and we=re looking forward to him.@

PEARLS GALORE CONFIRMED FOR BC MILE Dual Group 1 runner-up Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit

{Ire}) has been confirmed for the upcoming GI Breeders= Cup

Mile at Del Mar in November. A winner of the G3 Brownstown S.

on July 11 and G3 Fairy Bridge S. on Aug. 26, the Haras de Saint-

Pair homebred was second in both the G1 Matron S. at

Leopardstown on Sept. 11 and the Oct. 3 G1 Prix de la Foret.

Trainer Paddy Twomey said, AShe came out of the race last

weekend fantastic and she=s in good form. She=s going to the

Breeders= Cup Mile. She wouldn=t have liked the ground last

week, she wants fast ground.@ Cont. p17

The Breeders= Cup is also the target for Oct. 8 G3 Cornwallis S.

victor Twilight Jet (Ire) (Twilight Son {GB}). Owned and trained

by Michael O=Callaghan, the colt will run in the GII Breeders= Cup

Juvenile Turf Sprint.

AHopefully he=s going to the Breeders Cup now,@ said

O=Callaghan. AIt=ll be his 11th start of the year. After he won the

other day I was saying >I=ll give this lad a break=--but he arrived

home the next morning and he told me different.

AHe absolutely loves racing, he has a great constitution. He=s

just a bit of an animal, he loves his job and he=s a dream to train.

He=s won the Cornwallis now and he=s danced every dance this

year so whatever he does at the Breeders= Cup will be a bonus.@

He added, AIf he goes there in good fettle he=ll run a big race.

UBETTABELIEVEIT TO MICKLEY STUD Richard Kent's Mickley Stud will welcome the G2 Flying

Childers S. winner Ubettabelieveit (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}--

Ladylishandra {Ire}, by Mujadil) to its stallion ranks for the 2022

season.

Trained by Nigel Tinkler for owner Martin Webb,

Ubettabelieveit won on his second start at two and followed

that up with victory in the Listed National S. at Sandown.

Dropping back to five furlongs after failing to see out the six in

the G2 Gimcrack S., he then won the Flying Childers in a tight

finish with subsequent Group 2 winner Sacred (Blame).

He rounded off his productive juvenile campaign by finishing

third in the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf over 5 1/2 furlongs at

Keeneland.

"I'm delighted that Mickley Stud is to stand Ubettabelieveit as

he's a really good-looking individual and son of the highly

successful sire Kodiac, whose sons are proving to be sire sons as

well," said Richard Kent. "Kodi Bear (Ire), Adaay (Ire), Prince of

Lir (Ire) and Coulsty (Ire) have all sired Group-winning

2-year-olds, and Ardad (Ire), who also won the Flying Childers S.,

has sired the Middle Park and Prix Morny winner Perfect Power

(Ire) from his first crop of impressive 2-year-old winners this

season."

He continued, "I'm grateful to Martin Webb and Nigel Tinkler

for giving me the opportunity to acquire Ubettabelieveit and am

also grateful that they are retaining shares in him and will be

supporting him. We will be making shares available to breeders

and will be announcing further details regarding his nomination

fee after the conclusion of the October Yearling Sales."

Trainer Nigel Tinkler added, "Ubettabelieveit is one of the

fastest horses that I have trained and completely sound in every

way. His attitude was completely professional and all he wanted

to do was please you." Cont. p18

Bred at Ringfort Stud by Derek and Gay Veitch, Ubettabelieveit

is out of the juvenile winner Ladylishandra (Ire), herself a

daughter of Flying Childers S. winner Mujadil and now the dam

of four black-type winners. These include the dual Group 3

S. winner Shenanigans (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}). Ubettabelieveit

shares his fourth dam Dinner Partner (Tom Fool) with Noverre

Ajdal (Northern Dancer).

Sold for 50,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October

Yearling Sale to Roger Marley and John Cullinan of Church Farm

and Horse Park Stud, Ubettabelieveit was originally catalogued

for the Goffs UK Breeze-up Sale but was sold privately to Tinkler

This looked a listed race in name only and it duly produced a

winner who could be destined for the top in Limiti Di Greccio.

Successful in a seven-furlong Leopardstown maiden Aug. 12 and

runner-up in the Sept. 11 Listed Ingabelle S. back over that

course and distance since joining Paddy Twomey from Andrew

Kinsella, the bay raced towards the rear of mid-division early

against the rail under Billy Lee. Running into a pocket two out

and again at the furlong pole, the cause appeared lost as

Tranquil Lady and Sunset Shiraz forged on ahead but once

angled off the fence produced a rare surge to overhaul that duo

with 50 yards remaining. At the line, there was a dominant

margin to Tranquil Lady, who held on for the silver medal by a

short head from Sunset Shiraz who brought leading formlines

into the contest having placed in the G1 Moyglare Stud S., G2

Debutante S. and G3 Weld Park S.

AI was concerned turning into the straight and she seemed to

meet every bit of trouble she could, but she has a turn of foot,@

Twomey said. AShe=s a filly who does what she has to do and it=s

great that she won the way she did. She=s a smart filly and

displayed that to everybody today--we are lucky to have her.

Marty had intimated that he=d like to go to France for the Group

1 and Del Mar with her, but I managed to talk him out of it. I

bypassed the Weld Park, as I didn=t want her to have a penalty

when she tackles a Guineas trial next year. We won this last year

and I wanted to come here as I think it=s a perfect stepping

stone for the Guineas.@

AI thought the extra furlong would suit her today and the

slower ground didn=t seem to inconvenience her,@ Twomey

added. AThe owner would very much like to go for the Breeders=

Cup, but the trainer is trying to put the brakes on. She is a big

filly who is progressive and we=ve purposely picked her spots

with next year in mind. She=ll have an entry in both the Guineas

here and at Newmarket.@

Limiti di Greccio further advertises the prowess of her

Ballyhane Stud-based sire, becoming his sixth black-type winner.

Power Under Me and Colin Keane | Racingfotos.com

Listed Waterford Testimonial S. Cont.

Third before being promoted to second behind A Case of You

(Ire) (Hot Streak {Ire}) in the G3 Lacken S. over this trip at Naas

May 16, the bay was third tackling an extra furlong in the G2

Minstrel S. here July 18 and runner-up in the G3 Phoenix Sprint

S. over this course and distance Aug. 8. Dropping his level when

sixth in the Sept. 25 G3 Renaissance S. again over this track and

trip when last seen, he proved a relatively straightforward

conveyance for Keane=s historic 127th by racing near the pace

and taking control before two out.

AWe've been getting close to it slowly but surely, I=ve had

plenty of seconds in the last two weeks,@ the rider said. AIt was

great to level it for the boss and then to go and beat it for the

boss is even better. It hasn=t sunk in and probably won=t until we

start on zero next year and we=re looking back on it. We try to

beat every year=s tally, we mightn=t have a year like this again

for a while so we=ll appreciate it while it=s here.@

Ger Lyons commented, AColin is a credit to himself, his family

and the whole racing industry. He=s a fine example of what a

champion jockey should be. He keeps himself to himself and lets

his riding do the talking. You see Billy Lee going over to shake his

hand after the race and that tells you all you need to know

about the huge respect he has in the weighing room. He=s just a

genuinely good guy. The industry is full of people trying to make

heroes out of x, y and z but Colin has done it his way, the

old-fashioned way, his riding doing all the talking. Every winner

he rides from now until the end of the season is going to be a

record and, you know what, next season he will want to better

whatever total he finishes with this season so he is going to keep

us on our toes!@

TARTAN SKIRT (IRE) (f, 2, Mehmas {Ire}--Scottish Exile {Ire}, by

Ashkalani {Ire}), fourth on debut over seven furlongs at

Punchestown Sept. 14, travelled easily tracking the early leader.

In front before the two-furlong pole, the 8-13 favourite was not

asked a serious question en route to a two-length success from

Secret Magician (Ire) (Magician {Ire}). AShe=s a lovely filly, she

ran a lovely race first time out in Punchestown and has

improved plenty since then,@ Michael O=Callaghan commented.

AShe=s a filly that has done a good bit of growing and maturing in

the last six weeks and I=d say she=ll even be better next spring.

We might put her away now. She has plenty of pace, but I can

see her maybe getting seven for a Guineas trial next spring. She

obviously handled that ground today, but she would like nicer

ground. She has a bit of class, she=s by a good stallion and I think

she=ll keep on improving.@ The winner is the last known foal out

of the dam, whose first was the G3 Molecomb S. runner-up

Bonnie Charlie (GB) (Intikhab) who also placed on three other

occasions at that level, MGSP-Eng, GSP-Fr, $255,726. The dam is

Anamoe & Damien Oliver | Bronwen Healy

Street Boss | Darley Stallions

ANAMOE'S DESTINYFULFILLED

by Bren O'Brien

Anamoe's second Group 1 success in Saturday's Caulfield

Guineas provided a huge boost across the entire

Darley/Godolphin operation, which has invested significant time

and effort in building the international breeding careers of both

his sire Street Boss (USA) and his dam Anamato (Redoute's

Choice).

By Street Boss (USA), a multiple Group 1-winning shuttle son

of Darley's own hugely influential stallion Street Cry (Ire), and

out a Group 1-winning Redoute's Choice mare, it would be easy

to categorise Anamoe's ascent to status of dual Group 1 winner

and Australia's leading 3-year-old as pre-destined.

But while the Godolphin and Darley success story may be built

on elite international pedigrees, it is the work of everybody from

stallion handlers to head trainer James Cummings which realises

the potential of the athlete.

Reflecting on Anamoe's latest win, John Sunderland, stud

manager at Godolphin's Woodlands Stud, where Anamoe was

foaled on Nov. 16, 2018, said there are so many people involved

in the latest Group 1 success.

"It=s exciting for the whole team, he's a horse that touches

everybody right through from breeding all the way through to

racing. The whole team has been involved with this horse," he

said.

"Anamoe was conceived at Northwood Park in Victoria and he

came to us here (at Woodlands) to be foaled and raised. He was

then part of the racing system, so he went to Kelvinside. He's

then spelled back at Northwood Park and spent time at all our

racing stables. It=s truly a team effort and everyone can take a

lot of pride in that."

Anamato a Global Story It's a similar story, albeit on a global level, for his globetrotting

dam Anamato. Impeccably bred from the tremendously

successful broodmare Voltage (Whiskey Road {USA}), she was

raced by her breeders Royce and Julie Ritchie with trainer David

Hayes.

A winner of the G1 Schweppes Oaks, she was also placed in a

trio of other elite races, including a G1 American Oaks at

Hollywood Park, a performance which gave her already

impressive pedigree page an international flavour.

For a Darley operation which had recently put down a massive

marker of its Australian ambitions with the purchase of

Woodlands Stud in 2008, she represented an ideal acquisition.

Henry Plumptre, Darley's Australian general manager at the

time, described her as having considerable 'international

currency'.

Darley already owned her half-sister Eldarin (Marauding {NZ})

and added Anamato to its broodmare band via a substantial

private deal, sending her to Kentucky to be mated with rising

star stallion Street Cry.

That mating was not successful and she was then sent to

Europe to be mated to another rising Darley star in Dubawi (Ire),

twice, producing two unraced fillies, before heading to

Shamardal (USA), with whom she would produce the stakes

winner Anamba (GB).

TDN AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND • PAGE 2 OF 3 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • 11 OCTOBER 2021

She would have one more Northern Hemisphere foal, the

winning New Approach (Ire) filly Amuletum (GB), before arriving

back in Australia in August 2014.

A trio of matings with Champion stallion Lonhro followed, with

the second producing her first Australian winner, Amitto, before

she was sent to Northwood Park to visit Street Boss in 2017.

A Decisive Moment It was that mating which proved decisive not only for Anamato

as a broodmare but also arguably Street Boss as a stallion, as the

resultant colt is now destined to carry on his legacy on the

Darley roster for years to come.

"It=s been a fantastic journey, and it=s been a while in the

making. She (Anamato) was born here, raced here and overseas

and then after coming back, was then retired as a broodmare in

Europe," Sunderland said.

"She was able to make a mark over there, having a stakes

winner by Shamardal and she has now come back and produced

Anamoe.

"She's also got some exciting ones to come. She's got a lovely

Shooting To Win 2-year-old (Dartboard) that has gone into work

and she is now in foal to Blue Point, who is a son of Shamardal,

which is a three-quarter relation to the very good mare,

Anamba, up in Europe."

Anamato is in the foaling paddock at Woodlands and is set to

foal any time in the next two weeks, and will then head to Street

Boss, who has relocated to Darley Kelvinside this year.

Meanwhile, Anamoe's two half-sisters by Lonhro, Amitto and

Outline, were both retired off the track earlier this year and

have also visited Street Boss.

"It's obviously a cross that works well and continues to look

better every time Anamoe goes to the racetrack. They are both

nice Lonhro fillies and we look forward to that next generation

coming through in the next few years," Sunderland said.

Powerful Voltage Anamoe is the sixth Group 1 winner descended from

Newhaven Park-bred blue hen Voltage. She not only produced

Anamato, but also G1 Oakleigh Plate winner Drum (Marauding

{NZ}) and listed winner Port Watch (Star Watch).

As well as Anamoe, Voltage's daughters have produced Group

1 winners Grand Armee (Hennessy {USA}) and Dealer Principal

(Flying Spur), while Yourdeel (NZ) (Dundeel {NZ}) provided a

third generation of Group 1 winners in that family. Across those

three generations, there are an incredible 14 stakes winners

from 120 runners.

While it took a bit of patience for those powerful genetics to

come to the fore with the Australian-bred progeny of Anamato,

Sunderland always had faith that she would produce a very good

one.

"She's a very good-looking mare herself and most of her

progeny are as well. Anamoe was always a standout. I know it

sounds easy to say now, but as a physical, he always stood out.

It's not surprising when you consider how good-looking a mare

she is," he said.

Sunderland believes that physically Anamoe owes equal parts

to both his sire and dam and that could be another asset when it

comes his time in the breeding barn.

"His mum is quite a dark brown and Street Boss is a chestnut.

Anamoe is a bay and you=d say he is the combination of both

parents. There's some good looks there from both sides of the

family," he said.

"It=s very exciting when your whole business is developing

these very successful colts to go on and be stallions. If they are

good-looking it adds to it."

Beyond His Years As a Nov. 16 foal, there would have been those who doubted

Anamoe could come out and do what he did at two. He debuted

12 months ago to the day, in the Listed Debutant S. where he

finished fifth before improving to win the Listed Merson Cooper

S. two days before he would turn two.

Group 1 Winner For Shocking

TDN AusNZ Podcast: Mark Chittick

Cup Day Crowds Confirmed

His busy autumn campaign saw him win or place in all five

autumn starts, winning the G1 Inglis Sires' and the G2 Todman S.

and running second in the G1 Golden Slipper S. and third in the

G1 Blue Diamond S.

His three runs to date in his 3-year-old campaign have seen

him win the G2 Run To The Rose, run second in the G1 Golden

Rose, and now win the G1 Caulfield Guineas, all well before he

officially turns three.

In fact, in winning on Saturday he became the youngest

Caulfield Guineas in 20 years, since Lonhro, who was foaled on

Dec. 10, stormed to victory.

Anamoe joins the likes of recent Godolphin Group 1 winners

Bivouac and Colette (Hallowed Crown) as successful November

foals.

"There is a lot of pressure to get these early foals and I

understand the commercial reasons for that but here we have a

colt that was foaled on Nov. 16, he raced in the Slipper and he

was up and running early and has come on through and been

one of the top horses in his crop," Sunderland said.

"So often it doesn't matter when they are born, as they will

mature quick enough to do it if they are ready."

Anamoe's next step could be the G1 Cox Plate, where he is

again looking to create history. No 3-year-old born later in the

season has won the Moonee Valley feature since 1980, when

foaling dates were recorded by Studbook.
