........................................................
Rome is the capital city
of Italy. They started
building it in 753 B.C. and
the Romans have a story
to explain how this
happened.
Twin boys, Romulus and
Remus, were taken from
their mother and left by the river Tiber to starve. A
mother wolf found the babies and looked after them
until they were old enough to take care of
themselves.
Years later, Mars (the Roman God of war) said to the
boys: “Build a city where you were found.” The two
boys started building the city but ended up at war
with each other. Romulus won the battle. He built the
city and it became known as Rome. Today, historians
and archaeologists agree that people started living in
Rome long before the time of Romulus and Remus,
but many people still believe in the legend.
Many Romans lived in
blocks of flats! The
Romans called them
‘insulae’, which means
islands, because they
were tall and stuck out
above the streets.

6 A friend of yours is
planning to go camping
for the first time. Write
an email to your friend
giving him/her advice.
Give him/her tips about
what to do/not to do.
Use the ideas from Ex. 5
to help you. Start your
email like this:
a Remember to drink plenty of water. Your body
needs it when you are in the hot sun.
b Put sunscreen on your skin every time you
come out of the water. This is how you can
protect your skin from the sun.
c It’s usually very cold in the mountains so
remember to pack some warm clothes.
d You may have an accident if you swim near
windsurfers. Be careful!
e Don’t ever light a match inside your tent! It’s
extremely dangerous.
f Don’t let the hot sand burn your feet. Wear
sandals or flip-flops.
g Always make sure you have big black rubbish
bags with you. Never leave any rubbish behind!
h Your head needs protection from the sun.
Always wear a hat.
i Never go hiking in the mountains without a
whistle and a compass.
j Remember your sunglasses! They protect your
eyes against ultra violet rays.
k Don’t drink water from lakes and rivers. Drink
only bottled water.
l It is dangerous to swim after eating. Wait for
at least two hours before you go back into the
water.

Dear Mandy,
How are you? I hope you’re well. It was my birthday last Saturday. I was really sorry you couldn’t
come to my party. We had a great time!
I decorated my house with colourful balloons and we all played some great party games such
as ‘Simon Says’.
My mother made pizza, ham and cheese sandwiches, chicken and a tuna salad. The highlight of the
party, though, was my birthday cake. It was a delicious chocolate cake.
