This poster completes our “All about me” Social studies unit. Starting in about January a note is sent home asking parents to send in information about the origin of their childʼs name (this letter and lesson idea is found in the kindergarten “Many Voices” social studies resource). I had parents fill in the sheet, next time I would consider having them print directly onto the tag you will see in the photos, that would save me a step. I would include in the letter that the tags will be on display.

We drew some components of the poster (for example, Cʼest Moi - draw yourself) and used magazines for others. I actually prepared bins at centres with a topic already roughly cut out, for example food choices from magazines, activities and animals. Depending on your group they may be able to do that part themselves, I liked having some selection already prepared, otherwise they spent the entire time looking aimlessly ay magazines!

The portrait was done in a Corel Draw program but there are many that will take a photo and render in into a sketch. I printed it onto card with a Masking tape border and had those at the painting centre. Once painted and dried when you peel back the masking tape the image looks great (before applying the masking tape lay it sticky side down several times on carpet, we donʼt want it really sticky or it rips the paper. I had these out at the beginning of the year and whenever parents were in they did prepared a few). I would let the kids make goofy faces if they want!

Students brought in a family photo.

On their special day the star or special helper returned with a “Name

origin sheet” filled out and an artifact about their family or culture. Some of thie information went onto the tag on the poster. We also wrote about each student that day,

their likes and dislikes. I printed the guided writing off and compiled it into

another collboratve class book.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

In Social Studies, we are learning about what makes ourselves and others unique. We will be trying to answer these questions;

• What are my gifts and talents?• What is unique about the way I look?• What are my interests?• How did I get my name?• How do my familyʼs culture and traditions make me special?

For our study of names I have included a questionnaire about how studentsʼ names were chosen. They will also have the opportunity to bring to school an object that shows something about the culture, traditions and interests of people in their homes.

Therefore, when your child is the star of the day please do not have them bring a toy to share. Instead, please fill out the name questionnaire and have your child bring an object that shows something about the culture, traditions and interests of the people in your home.

We will be writing a few sentences about each student together to add to a collaborative book about all of the students in our class.

You can help your child discover how special he or she is. At home, you might do things such as:

• tell something special or unique about each other• encourage compliments to each other• encourage your child to participate in activities that he or she is

interested in• prepare special foods together• make or look at a scrapbook or photo album of people who are important

in your childʼs life

Thank you for your support!

Name Questionnaire

It is always interesting to know how a certain name was decided upon and what the name means.

Please talk with your child about his or her name. Then fill out the form below with any information youʼd like to provide, and return the form either on your childʼs star of the day date (list to come) or right away and I will keep it on file.

Thank you for participating in this activity.

Please return this entire sheet!
