Dr. Alison E. Bjoin, Principal
October 16, 2017 Dear Parent, The School District of Janesville is on a continuous journey to make our schools the best places for students to learn, staff to work, and parents to send their children for a good education. In this effort, we appreciate your support. It is important to gather feedback from you to celebrate successes and identify areas for growth. Please take a few minutes and complete this Parent Satisfaction Survey to help provide this feedback. Once the survey is complete, the results will be analyzed by an outside organization. The data from the survey will be sent to each school and the Superintendent. Then, the results of the survey will be shared with parents and the community. The survey can be accessed online at: SDJ Parent Satisfaction Survey
Thank you for interest in and support of your child’s education with us. Please contact me if you have any questions concerning the survey. Dr. Alison Bjoin

Craig High School Counselors:
A-Doz Mrs. Osmond
Dr-Ja Mrs. Fiore
Je-M Mr. Watson
N-Schu Mr. Bryan
Schw-Z Ms. Rudkin
Seniors
Counselors met with Seniors in I-Block about gradua-
tion requirements, the college application process, and
sending transcripts. We will be meeting soon regard-
ing scholarship information as well as financial aid
information.
Currently seniors should be:
Sending in college applications and be aware of
deadlines.
Keep visiting colleges.
Begin watching for scholarships
available in the Student Center.
NOTE: Seniors that failed any required courses
should have made it up in summer school or have
the class in their current schedule. If you have any
questions about this contact your counselor.
Scholarships
Seniors, keep your eyes open for new scholarship op-
portunities. They are announced and posted in the
Student Center or check out the Financial Aid/
Resources section under Student Services tab on the
Craig High School homepage. The local scholarship
form will be coming out in early December. One ap-
plication will put you in the pool for any of the local
scholarships or which you are eligible. Return the ap-
plication by March 1st. Also a word of caution: Be
careful of any scholarship or other financial aid oppor-
tunities that require you to pay a fee for their service.
These could be scams.
Financial Aid Night
Parents of seniors interested in getting information
about financial aid should plan to attend a financial aid
meting that will be held at Craig High School on No-
vember 8, 2017 at 6:00 pm in the cafeteria. The pur-
pose of this meeting is to explain the filing of the Fed-
eral Financial Aid Form (FAFSA). A financial aid
representative will be there to answer any questions
you may have. For more information on the FAFSA
or to apply for a FSA ID, visit their website at
www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Juniors Counselors went into Personal Finance classes to dis-
cuss credits, career exploration, post secondary op-
tions and career cruising. Now is a good time to be-
gin scheduling campus visits. The best way to know if
a campus is right for you is to go on a tour, get an ad-
missions presentation and get a feel for the college.
ACT
All juniors will be taking the ACT plus writing on
February 27 and work keys on February 28th. Juniors
will attend school on February 27th from 8 to approxi-
mately 12:30. The will then be released for the rest of
the day. Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors will not
attend school on February 27th. The schedule for
February 28th will be posted in the future.

ASVAB Test offered
at Craig High School
The ASVAB Test is used as a military entrance exam;
however 83% of those who take the test have no inter-
est in joining the military. Included with the test is the
Career Exploration Program that is free service that
many take advantage of as the multiple-aptitude bat-
tery that measures developed abilities and helps pre-
dict future academic and occupational success. The
test can help students determine areas of strength and
interests not identified by other types of tests. The
ASVAB Test is offered to any sophomore, junior, or
senior. It is administered annually to more than one
million high school, post-secondary students, and
military applicants.
The ASVAB will be offered Tuesday Nov. 7th,
2017 from 8:00 – 11:00 AM in Room B040 at Craig
High School. Students need to sign up in Student Ser-
vices and have a permission slip signed. Test space is
limited for the Free test; priority will be given to Sen-
iors.
Sophomores Counselors are currently meeting individually with
sophomores and parents. We will discuss credits,
transcripts, course selection, post-secondary options.
Invites to the meetings are being sent out from Octo-
ber-December.
Freshman We hope your child’s first few months at Craig are
going well. It is important to help your student:
› Start establishing good study habits
› Choose challenging classes to begin preparing for
college
› Understand the impact of high school grades and
course selection on college admissions
› Get involved in extra-curricular activities, volun-
teering, internships or work experiences
If you have any concerns, please ask your student’s
teachers or counselors for assistance.
Forensics Does your student have a flair for the dramatic? A passion for politics? A headful of opinions and nowhere to share them? Then tell your student to learn about the Craig Forensics (Speech) team! This academic team travels to competitions and is eligible for a varsity letter.
Forensics provides 15+ categories for students to explore acting, interpretive reading, and formal speaking. The categories range from memorizing and acting out a scene with a small group to speaking off the cuff about current events and social issues. There is truly something for everyone who feels that they have some-thing to say and want their voice to be heard! Students are encouraged to speak with the forensics coaches, Nicole Hilbelink and Anne Vander Zee, to learn more about the different categories and begin preparing for
the competition season, which runs from late January to mid-April (for those who qualify for State).
If you have questions, feel free to contact the coaches for more information. Better yet, encourage your student to contact one of the coaches!

Craig PTO: Craig Cares Campaign
REMINDER:
Picture Retake Day is Monday, October 23, 2017 *Portrait package order forms are available in the AP Office*
This is the 4th year of the Craig Cares campaign. During the holiday season, the Craig PTO seeks donations for individual students. These donations go to our neediest students who may otherwise not have anything for the holi-days. We do this as a gift card campaign and seek to match each student in need with a sponsor. We request that each sponsor donate $100 in gift cards as well as some small stocking stuffer items, such as lip balm, ear buds, etc. If you or your employer would be willing to sponsor a student(s) for the holiday season, please contact me be-fore Wednesday, November 15th. I will then provide you with information about a student and what their wishes are for the holiday season. The items, which will mostly be gift cards, will need to be purchased and returned to Craig High School by Friday, December 8th. Thank you for considering this opportunity. Please contact me if you would like to sponsor a student(s) or make a donation. If you would like to make a monetary donation, please make the check payable to "Craig PTO" and specify "Craig Cares" on the memo line. Thank you, Andrea Nickel [email protected]

So far Student Council has had a very successful school year. We elected our fresh-men officers, President Brooke Pehl, Vice President Claire Kettle, Secretary Mae Wil-liams, and Treasurer Bria Mikkelson. We also held our first blood drive on October 4th, hosted by the juniors. It was very successful and we are planning another one in the month of February. Homecoming week was also a large part of the first mid-term. The Sunday before all of student council spent hours decorating the hallways to match their class slogan, these year the Junior class won. On the final day of home-coming week, sadly the parade was rained out; however, the assembly was a huge hit. Seniors took first place in tug-a-war, for the third year in a row, as well as, in the noise competition. At the game, Mac Ryan, Mr. Kealy, and Mr. Phillips were able to burn the "J," and carry on the tradition. Student Council is also planning a winter bash for mid-December, further info on that will be provided. Claire Mikkelson Student Council Public Relations
Craig staff and students will be practicing fire drill exit strategies. Students will also be trained on exit procedures in the event of a fire drill, or emergency, dur- ing student passing time. An instructional video has been created, and it will be shared with all students throughout their I-Block. Additionally, instructional lesson plans will also be used during I-Block to reinforce appropriate safety measures and help students understand their responsibilities during a fire drill/emergency evacuation. Janes-ville Fire Department personnel were in attendance to assist Craig Staff during the Fire Prevention week fire drill the week of October 9th-13th to provide some feedback on safe and effective exit strategies. We look for-ward to supporting our students in this process. If you have any questions, please contact CHS administra-tion.

CRAIG LEO CLUB HOLDING EYEGLASS/SUNGLASS DRIVE
Please consider donating eyeglasses you no longer wear to help change someone’s life! The Craig LEO Club, affiliated with the Janesville Lions Club, will be conducting an eyeglass drive during parent-teacher confer-ences October 26-27. By donating your prescription eyeglasses or non-prescription sunglasses, you help adults and children in low and middle income communities by providing them the opportunity to obtain eye-glasses or sunglasses. You can deposit your eyeglasses or sunglasses dur-ing conferences in the collection boxes provided. Collection boxes will be stationed in the hallway leading to the Cafeteria. Thank you for helping others!
A reminder that any medications to be taken at school
needs a medication consent form. Over the counter medi-cations require a parent signature. Prescription medica-tions require both a physician signature as well as parent
signature. Forms can be found on the school district website or picked up in the AP office.

enroll in the Janesville Public School District. Enrollment will take place at the Educational Services Center
located at 527 S. Franklin St. (administration building) in the New Student Enrollment office. You may enroll
anytime during the two week period.

Requests for School Transfer/Placement within the School District (goldenrod forms) for incoming
kindergarten students should be submitted through the enrollment process. Forms are available at all schools,
as well as at the Educational Services Center. If you have questions regarding this process contact Tami
Carlson at 743-5006. The status of requests will be determined by January 15, 2018 if they are turned in by

the School District, it does not automatically qualify your kindergarten student for attendance at the same
school; however, siblings are generally assigned to the same school. In order for your kindergarten student to
attend the same school as a sibling, you must submit a request during the Kindergarten Enrollment time frame.
If you know of a child in your neighborhood or from community activities that would be entering

Public School Open Enrollment Timelines
The State of Wisconsin has announced the application period for open enrollment (also
known as public school choice) begins in February for the following school year. Open
Enrollment laws permit children to attend a public school in a school district other than
the one in which they live.
The open enrollment application period for the 2018-2019 school year is from February
5, 2018 – April 30, 2018 Parents are encouraged to apply on-line at
https://www2.dpi.state.wi.us/OpenEnrollApp. Although on-line application is
recommended, paper applications may be obtained from the Department of Public
Instruction or any school district after January 15, 2018 and must be delivered (hand-
delivery is recommended) to the nonresident school district during the application period.
Paper applications to attend Janesville must be submitted to the Administrative Services
Department no later than 4:00 p.m. on April 30th
(a postmark does not constitute timely
submission). Applications turned in prior to February 5th will be returned as not valid
and must be resubmitted after February 5th but before April 30th.
Enrollment in a requested school or program is subject to space and other limitations and
is not guaranteed. Transportation is the responsibility of the parent.
Under School District of Janesville board policy, students who attended the district under
open enrollment the previous year are not required to reapply for the following school
year.
An application is required for each sibling in the family. For example, if a family has one
child in elementary school that has been approved for open enrollment and a new student
entering kindergarten next year, the student entering kindergarten must apply for open
enrollment in order to attend the School District of Janesville.
Parents will be informed in June whether their open enrollment applications have been
approved or denied. The student’s school or program placement will be provided in June.
If you have questions, please contact the Administrative Services Office at 743-5006.

STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESSFUL TEENS
Every teenager wants to be happy, self-confident, popular, and successful. Some are willing to do just about anything to obtain these goals. Some let others make decisions for them, do things against their best judgment, or trade their own individual-ism for the chance of being accepted. Making good decisions can be difficult if you don’t know what you want in life. The fol-lowing strategies can be used to make a successful teen. Setting goals involves thinking about what it is that you wish
for out of life. Start by setting realistic goals, then break lar-ger goals into smaller goals and prioritizing them.
Discipline is what carries us along toward the realization of a goal. This means training regularly in order to improve your skills, even in the face of distraction.
Effective communication skills allow us to let our needs be known. At the same time, it’s important to understand the perspective of the other person. Listening is a key part of this strategy.
Often thought of as tedious and boring, organization is actu-ally a way to give your brain a break. When your environ-ment, thoughts, and tools are organized, it makes your work easier and more effective.
Risk-taking may seem out of place as a strategy for teens, but taking positive risks means being willing to operate out-side of your comfort zone. Trying something new can be scary, but can promote personal growth. It may mean follow-ing your own path, and separating yourself from the pack. Sometimes the pack may not always be the safest place to be.
In Conclusion: Remember only you can change yourself; how-ever, your willingness to change must be there. Every problem is not going to disappear, or every dream will not come true, but if you do the work, you will become a stronger, wiser, more competent person. You already have within you all of the tools and talents you need to create a better, more fulfilling life. All that’s left for you to do is to really want it.
FREE OR REDUCED LUNCH APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED ALL YEAR
Applications for free or reduced school meal bene-fits may be submitted any time during the school year. Contact your school office or the Business Services office at the ESC, 527 S. Franklin.
