RETURN OF THE KING: Keep Prepared

AS WE GATHER

Today is the Last Sunday of the Church Year. Next week we will turn our attention

to Advent and preparations for the celebration of Christ’s incarnation. Now we

prepare to celebrate the return of Christ our King. When will it be? How will we

know so that we are ready?

There are the signs in nature, the sight of the Son of Man, and the angels. For these

things, we keep an eye on the sky while we watch and wait, living our lives under

God’s grace as His righteousness draws near.

WELCOME – Pastor Christopher Fairbairn

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy

will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and

forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead

us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and

the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

THE APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus

Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the

virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.

He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He

ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy

Spirit, the Holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of

sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

INVOCATION

Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

OPENING SENTENCES Isaiah 51:4, 6; Psalm 39:7; 93:2, 5; Mark 13:33

Pastor: Give attention to Me, My people, and give ear to Me, My nation; for a law

will go out from Me, and I will set My justice for a light to the peoples.

People: And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You.

Pastor: Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the

heavens vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and they

who dwell in it will die in like manner; but My salvation will be forever, and

My righteousness will never be dismayed.

People: Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting.

Pastor: Your decrees are very trustworthy; holiness befits Your house, O Lord,

forevermore.

People: Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time

will come.

4

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Luke 23:42; Philippians 1:6

Pastor: As we live in the last days, waiting for Jesus to return, we are called to

remember His promises and that we are His people. Yet, sometimes we

forget what He has asked us to do. As God’s beloved, we are called to

build ourselves up in our most holy faith.

People: Lord Jesus, we confess that we neglect being built up by Your Word

and Spirit. Forgive us and remember us.

Pastor: As God’s beloved, we are urged to pray in the Holy Spirit.

People: Lord Jesus, we confess that we neglect to converse with You in prayer

and to guide our prayer life according to Your Word and Your will.

Forgive us and remember us.

Pastor: As God’s beloved, we are urged to keep ourselves in the love of God.

People: Lord Jesus, we confess that we neglect to remember our Baptism.

Forgive us and remember us.

Pastor: As God’s beloved, we are urged to wait for the mercy of Christ.

People: Lord Jesus, we confess that we neglect to embrace the mercy that is

ours in You as we look forward to Your return. Forgive us and

remember us.

Pastor: As Jesus was on the cross, the thief next to Him asked, “Jesus, remember me

when You come into Your kingdom.” As Jesus remembered the thief, He

remembers you are His beloved child, and He remembers your sin no more.

As a called and ordained servant of Jesus the Christ, and by His authority, I

forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of

the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

Pastor: And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it

to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

People: Amen. Thanks be to God!

5

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Pastor: Lord God,

People: You reign, robed in majesty over all that was, is, and will be. You are

the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. As we wait for

Your triumphant return, keep us steadfast in the one true faith and

lead us to live lives that reflect Your presence so that You may work

through us as You save others by snatching them from the fire;

Pastor: through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You

and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

People: Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 51:4-6 (Keep your eyes open for Jesus—

righteousness draws near.)

Reader: 4 “Listen to me, my people. Hear me, Israel,

for my law will be proclaimed, and my justice

will become a light to the nations. 5 My mercy and justice are coming soon.

My salvation is on the way.

My strong arm will bring justice to the nations.

All distant lands will look to me

and wait in hope for my powerful arm. 6 Look up to the skies above, and gaze down on the earth below.

For the skies will disappear like smoke,

and the earth will wear out like a piece of clothing.

The people of the earth will die like flies,

but my salvation lasts forever.

My righteous rule will never end!

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

6

EPISTLE Jude 20-25 (Remember your identity in Christ.)

Reader: 20 But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith,

pray in the power of the Holy Spirit, 21 and await the mercy of our Lord

Jesus Christ, who will bring you eternal life.

People: In this way, you will keep yourselves safe in God’s love.

Reader: 22 And you must show mercy to those whose faith is wavering.

People: 23 Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment.

Show mercy to still others, but do so with great caution, hating the

sins that contaminate their lives.

Reader: 24 Now all glory to God, who is able to keep you from falling away and will

bring you with great joy into his glorious presence without a single

fault. 25 All glory to him who alone is God, our Savior through Jesus Christ

our Lord.

People: All glory, majesty, power, and authority are his before all time, and in

the present, and beyond all time! Amen.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Mark 13:24-37 (The end is near.)

The Coming of the Son of Man 24 “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon

will not give its light, 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in

the heavens will be shaken. 26 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in

clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then he will send out the angels and

gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of

heaven.

7

The Lesson of the Fig Tree 28 “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and

puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also, when you see these

things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 30 Truly, I say to

you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven

and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

No One Knows That Day or Hour 32 “But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in

heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard, keep awake.[a] For you do

not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he

leaves home and puts his servants[b] in charge, each with his work, and commands

the doorkeeper to stay awake. 35 Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when

the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the

rooster crows, or in the morning— 36 lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.”

Reader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to You, O Christ.

Blessed Be Your Name Blessed be Your name, in the land that is plentiful. Where Your streams of abundance flow, Blessed be Your name. Blessed be Your name, when I’m found in the desert place, Though I walk through the wilderness, Blessed be Your name. Every blessing You pour out I’ll turn back to praise When the darkness closes in, Lord, Still I will say, Blessed be the name of the Lord, Blessed be Your name. Blessed be the name of the Lord, Blessed be Your glorious name. Blessed be Your name, when the sun’s shining down on me. When the world’s all as it should be, Blessed be Your name. Blessed be Your name, on the road marked with suffering.

Though there’s pain in the offering, Blessed be Your name. Every blessing You pour out I’ll turn back to praise When the darkness closes in, Lord, Still I will say, Blessed be the name of the Lord, Blessed be Your name. Blessed be the name of the Lord, Blessed be Your glorious name. You give and take away You give and take away and forever I will say, Blessed be Your name You give and take away You give and take away My heart will choose to say Blessed be Your name Blessed be the name of the Lord, Blessed be Your name. 25th Celebration THANK YOU!

What a wonderful day of celebration to be with our church families, past and present, and

give thanks to God for our 25 years of His ministry through us. The many kind words,

thoughtful gifts, amazing worship, children and adults singing, and the wonderful musicians

are greatly appreciated and reflect the deep love each of you have for our Savior. We were

truly overwhelmed by the whole day and thank each of you who helped to plan and setup,

who attended, and who pray for us. Thank you, thank you. We love our St. Paul family!

Mexico Mission Update Thanks to God’s grace, and with the prayers and support of the St. Paul community, the Mexico mission project was an enormous success! On Sunday the mission team returned safely, tired but grateful to God for having given them the opportunity to serve the wonderful people we met in Juarez and Anapra, Mexico. There were challenges along the way, but it was obvious that God had a plan, and the team could see His hand in everything we did. For instance, on Monday 11 team members had their flight cancelled, but the 4 who made it to El Paso were able to handle Tuesday’s hygiene education and water filter distribution in Juarez successfully on their own. The rest of the team arrived on Tuesday. The construction team traveled to Anapra on Wednesday and began working extra hours each day constructing the house for the Huerta family. The hygiene and water filter team continued to work each day in different locations, teaching, distributing water filters, and sharing the gospel. All along the way we were guided and supported by our wonderful hosts Scott and Luz from the Ysleta Lutheran Mission. On Saturday the entire team agreed to give up their planned day of rest and touring in El Paso to finish constructing the Huerta family’s house. Part of the hygiene and water filter team joined the construction team to paint the house, and the Huerta family helped in the work. The rest of the hygiene team helped with the food distribution program at the Ysleta Mission. On Sunday the St. Paul team participated in a Bible study and church service at the mission prior to our departure. We wish to thank the entire St. Paul community for what we were able to accomplish in Juarez and Anapra in Mexico. We couldn’t have done it without your prayers and support. TO GOD BE THE GLORY!

Stephen Ministry supports Pastor Chris and Pastor Jim by deepening, expanding, and extending the caring capacity of our church. A team of Stephen Ministers, along with our pastors, provides ongoing care for more people than our pastors could provide alone. This also frees our pastors to invest more time in other important ministry areas.

In the book of Acts, Luke shows that God works through His word and through poor and helpless people to bring people to faith in Christ. Please consider how the Lord calls every believer to bear witness to Jesus’ death and resurrection and to salvation in His name. This month, Women in Christ is focusing on the mission grant entitled “Bringing Christ and Hope to Michigan’s Urban Communities (Acts 2 Enterprise).” Acts 2 Enterprise works to make an impact in urban communities such as Detroit, Flint, Benton Harbor, and Pontiac to strengthen faith and address social needs in these communities. The amount of the grant is $25,000. Please prayerfully support this effort as well as add to your MITE box this month. Thank you for your past support. ______________________________________________________________________________

THE 125 FLOOD BUCKETS CAMPAIGN IS OVER! Many thanks to those that delivered them to the Lutheran Emergency Relief Team storage facility at Living Faith Lutheran Church in Marine City on Sunday, November 7th. They will be used for a future disaster relief team going out into the field to help our brothers and sisters in Christ. Thank you St Paul family and friends for gathering and assembling the items that were asked for.

The team had a great trip down to Family of God on Tuesday, November 2. They were quite surprised by the sudden snowstorm as they were loading the car to leave but were rewarded by a beautiful rainbow on their drive down The people at Family of God really appreciated the warm casseroles on a chilly evening. They served all 7 casseroles (75 plates) so that was the perfect amount. They shared, you could really see the impact of the cold on the faces of the folks coming through the food line . The team was reminded of all that we have to be thankful for on the drive home as they turned on the heated seats in the car and thought of those who might be spending the night on the streets. Tom made a great connection with a gentleman named Eugene, building those personal relationships sometimes starts with asking someone their name. Great big thank you to all 17 volunteers who made this meal at Family of God possible.
