18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

FIRST READING (EX 16:2-4, 12-15) Early in their Exodus journey, the Israelites expressed fear and frustra!on to Moses. God heard and responded to their “grumbling” by sending bread from heaven. When have you experienced God answering your plea for help? SECOND READING (EPH 4:17, 20-24) Paul told the Ephesians that as believers in Christ you should “put away” the bad parts of “your former way of life.” How have you done this in your life as a believer in Christ? GOSPEL (JN 6:24-35) We hear today the introduc!on of Jesus’ extended “bread of life” discourse. In referring back to the ancient Israelites who ate “manna” (bread) in the desert, Jesus tells the crowds: “I am the bread of life.” How would you explain to someone how Jesus sustains you?

REFLECT AND RESPOND 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“You cannot see the forest through the trees” is a widely known saying that can bring wisdom to our understanding of our journey. O7en, our sight becomes limited to what is immediately before us. We lose touch with lessons and experiences from the past and promises and hope for the future. As human beings, we have the privilege of being able to choose things. What I like and don’t like, want, and don’t want can be major preoccupa!ons of our minds and

hearts. Our preferences and desires begin to define us more than the simple fact of our being. Who we are ma9ers more than what we are or what we have. If we don’t move beyond the external and superficial stuff to what really is of essence, we risk becoming very unse9led, disorientated, angry, and unhappy. We fail to see the bigger picture of hope and promise that lies ahead and the Divine Presence that has sustained and carried us before.

We like it when the “now” !me of our lives sa!sfy us. Even the people who witnessed Jesus feed the five thousand got confused and distracted. It felt good when thousands of people were able to eat. They wanted to know what they could do to get this to happen again! But Jesus quickly reminds them that this is not the point of this sign. As much as the now !me of our lives is of concern, it is not what is ul!mately important. We need to learn the difference between being and doing, drawing more strength from who we are and who God is rather than what is happening around us and the choices we can make. Jesus is the true bread that came down from heaven. Jesus is the very incarnate presence of God who sustains life and assures us that we will not perish. This is not easy to understand and feel. We have to prac!ce being in the presence of ourselves, others, crea!on, and God. We are brought to a holy place when we encounter the sacredness of being. This is real prayer.

Then, we learn to trust. It is when we cease trus!ng that we start to become afraid, uncertain, apprehensive, and doub?ul, and overly selfconcerned. We even start to grumble. God has our back. That is the essen!al powerful message of the living bread come down from heaven. God, who is alpha is also omega, the beginning and the end, and has everything in between in His care as well. A woman once remarked that her most powerful God moment happened when she and her husband cuddled with their new baby for a !me. Without exchanging words and using only the affec!on communicated through sight and touch, they rested in being with each other. This brought them to the sacred, where they realized that a greater Being was with them. It was real. They knew that they were part of something bigger, in!mate, and profound. When we rest in the Living Source of life, we will find that our souls are no longer hungry or thirsty.

QUESTION: What can I do to help our family prac!ce our faith each day?

ANSWER: Some families prac!ce their religion together as just another event on their schedule: go to church, observe Lent, help at the parish picnic, go to a mee!ng, volunteer !me, make your confession, use your envelope... But the focus needs to be on who we areGod’s people, in rela!onship with Him, loved, forgiven, and redeemed, and called to live and proclaim the Gospel. OBSERVANCES THIS WEEK

MONDAY: St. Eusebius of Vercelli, Bishop; St. Peter

Julian Eymard, Priest

WEDNESDAY: St. John Vianney, Priest

THURSDAY: The Dedica!on of the Basilica of St.

Mary Major

FRIDAY: The Transfigura!on of the Lord

SATURDAY: St. Sixtus II, Pope, and Companions,

Martyrs; St. Cajetan, Priest; Blessed Virgin Mary

NEXT SUNDAY: 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

John Vianney was a man with vision: He wanted to become a priest, but he had to overcome his meager formal schooling, which inadequately prepared him for seminary studies. His failure to comprehend La!n lectures forced him to discon!nue. But his vision of being a priest urged him to seek private tutoring. A7er a lengthy ba9le with the books, John was ordained.

Situa!ons calling for “impossible” deeds followed him everywhere. As pastor of the parish at Ars, John encountered people who were indifferent and quite comfortable with their style of living. His vision led him through severe fasts and short nights of sleep. His work as a confessor is John Vianney’s most remarkable accomplishment. In the winter months he was to spend 11 to 12 hours daily reconciling people with God. In the summer months this !me was increased to 16 hours. Unless a man was dedicated to his vision of a priestly voca!on, he could not have endured this giving of self day a7er day.

Many people look forward to re!rement and taking it easy, doing the things they always wanted to do but never had the !me. But John Vianney had no thoughts of re!rement. As his fame spread, more hours were consumed in serving God’s people. Even the few hours he would allow himself for sleep were disturbed frequently by the devil. Who, but a man with vision, could keep going with everincreasing strength? In 1929, Pope Pius XI named him the patron of parish priests worldwide.

mission are supported by the daily rituals, celebra!ons, and tradi!ons that help us stay focused. Sharing our faith strengthens us and clarifies the beliefs and values of Chris!an living.

Daily family prac!ces include !me for prayerbefore meals, before bed, before important mee!ngs and ac!vi!es. A9end Sunday Mass together and discuss the homily a7erward. Create family celebra!ons for holy days and holidays. Make religion a regular part of your discussions. Include others, especially the elderly and the less fortunate, in your ac!vi!es and charitable efforts. By applying the virtues of faith, hope, and love to each day, faith becomes part of who your family is. It influences how you act towards others, what you value, and how mindful of God you are. Faith is the leaven of life that helps all of us rise to our calling and dignity as God’s people.

CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Continued from Page 2

Born in La Mure d’Isère in southeastern France, Peter Julian’s faith journey drew him from being a priest in the Diocese of Grenoble in 1834, to joining the Marists in 1839, to founding the Congrega!on of the Blessed Sacrament in 1856. In addi!on to those changes, Peter Julian coped with poverty, his father’s ini!al opposi!on to Peter’s voca!on, serious illness, a Jansenis!c overemphasis on sin, and the difficul!es of geYng diocesan and later papal approval for his new religious community.

His years as a Marist, including service as a provincial leader, saw the deepening of his Eucharis!c devo!on, especially through his preaching of Forty Hours in many parishes. Inspired at first by the idea of repara!on for indifference to the Eucharist, Peter Julian was eventually a9racted to a more posi!ve spirituality of Christ

centered love. Members of the men’s community which Peter founded alternated between an ac!ve apostolic life and contempla!ng Jesus in the Eucharist. He and Marguerite Guillot founded the women's Congrega!on of the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament. Peter Julian Eymard was bea!fied in 1925and canonized in 1962, one day a7er Va!can II’s first session ended.

In every century, sin has been painfully real in the life of the Church. It is easy to give in to despair, to speak so strongly of human failings that people may forget the immense and selfsacrificing love of Jesus, as His death on the cross and His gi7 of the Eucharist make evident. Peter Julian knew that the Eucharist was key to helping Catholics live out their bap!sm and preach by word and example the Good News of Jesus Christ.

JOIN THE CONVERSATION Sign Up for the Fall CRHP Weekend

Come join us and let’s start the conversa!on.

The Christ Renews His Parish fall weekends will be held September 11 and 12 for the women and October 9 and 10 for the men. Now is the !me to commit to these weekends. Please go to the parish website, h9ps://

stpatricksgretna.org/mesmerize/getinvolved/christrenewshisparish/ to register or contact Barb Applegate at 4029800216 with any ques!ons.

We are happy to announce that we will begin hos!ng monthly parish breakfasts again beginning this month! Every second Sunday of the month, parishioners are invited to join us in the Parish Center from 9 AM to 12 PM for a delicious breakfast. It’s a perfect way to gather a7er Sunday Mass and get to know other parishioners here at St. Patrick.

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” (John 6:35)

How many !mes do you use or hear the word “want” during the day? What do you want to be when you grow up? What do you want for dinner? I want to watch something else. Where do you want to be in 25 years?

We live in a culture that is governed bywants. Sadly, this endless desire for more is only intensified by countless adver!sing campaigns and the belief that the only things worth having are those that are new and novel.

As we con!nue our reading of the sixth chapter of John’s gospel this Sunday, we get a sense that this was also the perspec!ve of the crowds who had gathered around Jesus a7er he fed a great number with only a few loaves and fish.“Jesus answered them and said, ‘Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled.’”Even though Jesus had sa!sfied their physical hunger, they s!ll wanted more.

Like so many people in our world today, the crowd that day was really only looking for something perishable, for temporary sa!sfac!on to an immediate want. Whether this was an opportunity to see Jesus perform another miracle or because they were hoping for more to eat than just bread and fish they were hoping for something else. They wantedjust one more thing.

St. John tells us, however, that Jesus recognized their misguided desires and reminded them and us that if we are to be truly filled (and fulfilled), we have to recognize and honor those hungers, hopes, and needs that are deep within us. We must recognize, in a special way, that common and very human need to be known and loved. These are the hungers and needs that Jesus addresses in this Gospel passage when he says to the crowds,“Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.”

No amount of money, power, influence, sex, or material goods can ever bring true sa!sfac!on and fulfillment. However much we might have in life, those fundamental desires that are deep within us will never be sa!sfied without the love of God and the care and support of a community. Pope Francis spoke to thiswhen he reflected:

“[The crowd] had given more meaning to that bread than to its donor. God Himself is both the gi7 and the giver. Thus from that bread, from that gesture, the people can find the One who gives it, who is God. He invites them to open up to a perspec!ve which is not only that of the daily need to eat, dress, achieve success, build a career. Jesus speaks of another food. He speaks of a food which is incorrup!ble and which is good to seek and gather… That is to say, to seek salva!on, the encounter with God.”

In the end, we know that only God can truly provide the nourishment and fulfillment that will bring us las!ng peace and joy and that will sa!sfy these deeply rooted needs and desires. But we also recognize that we have been given the great gi7s of the Scriptures and the Eucharist the Bread of Life to nourish and strengthen us as we journey through life.

As Pope Benedict XVI remindedthe bishops of La!n America and the Caribbean in 2007,“Every Eucharist is a personal encounter with Christ. Listening to God’s word, our hearts burn because it is He who is explaining and proclaiming it. When we break the bread at the Eucharist, it is He whom we receive personally.”

To receive the Eucharist is not to getsomethingbut to encountersomeone. Because in the Eucharist, we enter into a communion with Jesus Himself. It is in this communion that the deepest desires and longings of our hearts find las!ng fulfillment.

Draw near to your servants, O Lord, and answer their prayers with unceasing kindness, that, for those who glory in you as their Creator and guide, you may restore

what you have created and keep safe what you have restored. Through our Lord Jesus

Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Beginning next weekend, August 78, we will be scheduling Greeters again for the weekend Masses. Please see Page 7 of the bulle!n to see the Liturgical Minister Schedule. If you have any ques!ons about Gree!ng at Mass please contact Gabrielle Bash at [email protected] or 4023324444 ext. 212.

PARISH BREAKFASTS Begin Next Week!

Awesome Creator, I thank You for leYng Your people witness the transfigura!on of Your Son (Jesus Christ). They did not follow cunningly devised fables when they made known to the world the power and coming of You, but they

were eyewitnesses of His majesty. Your voice was heard (which came from heaven) when they were with Him on the holy mountain. Lord, I am grateful for Your power that acted as proof for Your followers so that they could go out and preach and teach the gospel, Amen.

REGISTER FOR RCIA TODAY Learn More About the Catholic Faith

The Rite of Chris!an Ini!a!on of Adults or RCIA is a process through which unbap!zed adults and children over the age of 7 are formed in the teachings and prac!ces of

Catholicism and are ini!ated into the Catholic Church. This process also includes adults or children who have been bap!zed outside the Catholic Church but wish to prepare to receive the sacraments of Confirma!on and Eucharist. A9ending classes is inno way a commitment to join the Catholic Church but simply an opportunity to learn more about the faith and discern if you feel called to join.

Classes are open to all who are interested in learning about the faith, Catholics are invited to a9end as well! Classes begin on August 26 but registra!on for the new class of candidates has already begun. If you are interested in a9ending please register online though our parish website, h9ps://stpatricksgretna.org/mesmerize/educa!on/faithforma!on/rcia/. Or feel free to contact our RCIA coordinator, Gabrielle Bash, at [email protected].

Chrissie shut her Bible with frustra!on. “I get nothing out of this! How can you read it so much?!”

I had told her thatthe Biblewas like a love le9er to her from God; that if she read it, she’d hear Him speaking to her heart and life. Five days and who knows how many chapters later, Chrissie had s!ll heard nothing.

Maybe you can relate. You set aside !me, get out your Bible, curl up with some coffee, start reading and . . . nothing. It doesn’t make sense, or you can’t relate, or it’s just too much work. You put the Bible down and decide it’s a be9er use of your !me to go to Mass or to read someone else’s reflec!ons.

“How do the Protestants do it?” Chrissie asked. “Do they have some special Scripture line to heaven?”

I don’t think so, but that got me thinking. Before I became Catholic, the Bible was my sacrament, my Eucharist. It was where I found the presence of God. I couldn’t choose to go to Mass or Adora!on if I got bored reading the Bible, I had to read harder. I got frustrated and disappointed as o7en as anyone, but it never occurred to me to stop. I wanted a rela!onship with God and with His son. So I did what anyone does who wants a rela!onship with someone else: I hung out where I knew he would be.

It helps to think about the Bible as a place and not a book. The Church tells us thatin the sacred books, the Father who is in heaven meets His children with great love and speaks with them;and the force and power in the word of God is so great that it stands as the support and energy of the Church, the strength of faith for her sons, the food of the soul, the pure and everlas!ng source of spiritual life (Dei Verbum,21. Emphasis mine).

God comes down from heaven to meet us in the Bible! When I read that, I imagine myself on a bench in my garden, reading my Bible, with God right beside me.

Some!mes He talks. Some!mes it’s a message right to me! Other !mes, it’s more about Him: things He’s done, stories about His family, truths that I should know. Some things are interes!ng, some things profoundand some things are just things.Bits and pieces I hardly no!ce, but that make my knowing richer.

Some!mes I talk.I might thank Him for what I read, talk about the way it touches me, or tell Him I don’t get it. If I can’t find Him right away, I’ll look harder. I’ll ask Him to show me what He has for me that day.

Some!mes, we just sit there. It might be in blissful contempla!on of the exchange we just had, but more o7en we just hang out. His words might not strike me, or I have nothing to say. That’s OK. Like I can with my friends, we can sit there in quiet. Both on the bench, just being together.

Does God speak to me?Yes. Not always directly, not always with words I feel in my heart, and not every !me I pick up His Word. But the Bible’s not a tool that does what I want when I want it to. It’s a place I meet God and get to know Him. The more I read, the be9er I know Him and the more I recognize His voice. He will speak to me throughout the day, through the Scripture that’s been wri9en in my heart.

If you’re learning to spend !me in Scripture, remember these “three P’s” of frui?ul Bible reading:

1. PrayerAlways pray first “so that God and man may talk together; for ‘we speak to Him when we pray; we hear Him when we read the divine saying’” (Dei Verbum,25).

2. PersistenceBuild a habit of Bible reading. Don’t expect instant or constant gra!fica!on. (Think of it as daily bread, not daily dessert!) Like food, it nourishes even when you don’t feel it. Search diligently and trust God to meet you.

3. Pa!enceGod wants to speak to you! He gave you His word. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Take it slow and savor what you read. Learn to listen and wait for His “s!ll, small voice.”

May God meet you in His Word with love!
