Welcome to Cullman! If this is your first time here, then you’re about to discover what so many other newcomers before you already have: friendly people, abundant and diverse natural beauty, a distinct sense of place rooted in deep, rich history, and unparalleled economic, educational, recreational, and spiritual opportunities.

Situated at the convenient, imminently accessible midpoint between Alabama’s two biggest economic centers (Birmingham and Huntsville), Cullman County enjoys a highly-diversified economy and a terrific quality of living. It’s a place people come to play — and once they discover it, it’s often the place where they come to stay.

We sit atop the Cumberland Plateau, a verdant, forested region of pristine lakes, clear rivers, and gently rolling hills defined by the mighty Tennessee River to the north, while giving way at our plateau’s southern fringe to the dramatic foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

We’re famous for inland water recreation, from Lewis Smith Lake — one of the nation’s cleanest reservoirs and a pro-circuit bass fisherman’s paradise — to the newly-opened Duck River Reservoir, where the action on the water is matched on the shore by more than 20 miles of expertly-designed hiking and biking trails, purpose built to enthusiasts’ specifications.

Cullman is fun. Every month of the year brings new activity and events that beckon friends and neighbors out

to every corner of our area. From our picturesque Oktoberfest celebration, to the sprawling Bloomin’ Festival arts and crafts show in April, to Rock the South in June — a highlight of many a country music fan’s national concert calendar — there’s always something happening, and it’s almost always set against one of our community’s many beautiful backdrops.

Cullman is active. The bustle and energy that surrounds the City of Cullman’s historic downtown — and pretty much everywhere else — belies the city’s modest, on-paper population of 15,000. Private business owners and elected leaders work hand-in-hand to grow our city, and the communities beyond, from the inside out. Residents love living here, because Cullman captures a rare and enviable combination of sought-after qualities: it’s historic, it’s beautiful, it’s safe, it’s close to other points of action, it’s loaded with job opportunities, and its residents have made its award-winning public education system a point of civic pride.

Cullman plans for the future, because we know that our people have plans for the future. With a strong transportation and utility infrastructure and an aggressive job training partnership between local leaders and Wallace State Community College — one of the nation’s highest-rated community colleges and a statewide education destination for health care, technical training and workforce development skills — we’re a community determined to make good on the debt we owe our past generations of visionary leadership by enriching the lives and opportunities of generations yet to come.

We’ve barely begin to scratch the surface to reveal the depth of all that our wonderful community has to offer, but if you’ve come this far, we’re certain of one thing: your journey toward discovering Cullman’s many treasures is only just beginning. From all of us who call this wonderful community home, welcome! We hope you’ll stay awhile — and maybe even stick around to help us write the next chapter in our wonderful story.

Location, location, location.

One of the greatest perks about the Cullman area is its proximity to so many other major cities in the state and region.

Not only is Cullman County practically smack dab between Birmingham (50 miles) and Huntsville (55), but it’s also within relative driving distance of Chattanooga (128), Nashville (145), Atlanta (196) and Memphis (212).

Getting to the Cullman area is extremely easy, with access to the interstate and a quartet of major highways creating an abundance of entry points. Cullman County touts several exits on Interstate 65 — including four (304, 305, 308 and 310) in the city — and features lengthy stretches of two federal highways (U.S. 278 and U.S. 31) and two state highways (AL-157 and AL-69).

Getting to the Cullman area is an absolute cinch. After you have the opportunity to see everything Cullman County has to offer, though, it certainly won’t be so easy to leave!

Rock the SouthCullman becomes a national crossroads of music as Rock the South takes center stage as one of the country top music venues each year.

The first weekend in June brings the likes of Florida-Georgia Line, Hank Williams Jr., Little Big Town, and many more to Heritage Park for high-energy performances, earning Rock the South a place in Billboard magazine’s Top 10 concerts in the nation.

Featuring an array of ticket levels, concert-goers can enjoy traditional festival seating, an up-close VIP section, or the comfort of a tent with beds, chairs and most of the amenities of home.

The audience comes from just about every state, Canada, Europe and South America as Rock the South has earned a reputation for a must-go event on the summer concert trail that sprawls across the country.

Initiated as a recovery event after a destructive wave of tornadoes hit Cullman in 2011, Rock the South pours thousands of dollars into local charities while guaranteeing the best of traditional and rising stars of the country music scene.

Tickets go on sale in January at rockthesouth.com, providing plenty of opportunities to ensure admittance to the shows.

Attendance has topped 60,000 the last two years, and that’s only expected to grow with Rock the South’s penchant for packing two days of superstar acts on the schedule.

Smith Lake and Smith Lake ParkNestled along the hilly terrain of Cullman County’s southwestern border is a 21,000 care, 500-foot deep (at its deepest), 500-mile shoreline reservoir that’s carved out its own culture for the anglers, wa-ter sports enthusiasts, boaters, and laid-back lake dwellers who claim some part of Smith Lake as their home. One of the nation’s clean-est man-made lakes, Smith Lake sprawls through three Alabama counties and offers year-round ac-tivity at just the right distance from the bustle of civilization. That’s not to say the lake is wanting for services — in fact, you can grab a great meal and a drink at The Grille at Trident Marina, make a weekend at one of the well-appointed cabins at the municipally-owned Smith Lake Park, launch any flavor of day excursion you choose from one of more than half a dozen marinas, or even paddle up on a lazy Sunday morning for a decidedly low-key worship service at the Smith Lake Cabin Resort’s weekly “Church on the Lake” experience. Homes at Smith Lake range from the modest to the extravagant (several have been featured on HGTV’s lake-themed home showcases), but the lake’s endless shoreline and thousands of hidden coves offer the same open-access welcome

to both lake dwellers and day guests. Whether you’re looking for high-adrenaline action, a solo adventure of exploration and dis-covery, or just a little good old-fash-ioned R & R, there’s no ambition that Smith Lake can’t fulfill. It’s one of the definitive experiences for any visit to the Cullman area, and it’s one of our biggest natural assets. Smith Lake is Cullman at its very best.

Smith Lake Park has so much to offer, set within a beautiful park campus that has so much room to roam, that it deserves its own spotlight. Owned and operated by Cullman County Parks, SLP is loaded with goodies for day trippers and overnighters: nine spa-cious, well-appointed cabins; 219 full service sites; five water and electric sites; and 61 tent sites. An all-new asphalt boat launch and spacious parking area are centrally positioned for striking out toward the park’s eight pavilions, numerous playgrounds, swimming pool, fishing pier, special event stage, putt-putt golf, and concession shack. With an expansive sand beachfront and tons of room to throw your own kind of party, a day — or a whole weekend — at Smith Lake Park won’t be enough to see it all.

CLASSIC CULLMAN | 2019 [ 25 ]

Clarkson Covered BridgeCovered bridges still linger throughout the South, but few are as impressive, historic, and scenic as the 270-foot Clarkson Covered Bridge, which spans Crooked Creek west of Cullman. The lattice-truss construction bridge, which soars above the deep valley cut by the creek, may be the main attraction, but it’s by no means the only highlight of the beautiful and placid munic-ipally-operated park that bears its name. Walking trails, picnic sites, historic trail plaques, and a restored, sluice-powered water wheel make for amazingly varied photo opportunities. Admission to the park — and the bridge — are totally free, making it a wonderful daytime getaway for locals and out-of-towners alike.

The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament offers a place for people of all faiths to worship and meditate on God. The monastery, plaza and church on the grounds are visited by people from across the country and around the world.Visit olamshrine.com or call 256-352-6267 for information on tours.

While the Warehouse District concentrates what’s great about Cullman’s historic downtown, it’s s small sliver of the city’s wider downtown district, which bustles daily in all directions at a pace that makes Cullman’s beating heart one of the liveliest you’ll find anywhere. Filled with remarkably preserved and updated structures dating to the early 1900s, downtown is an architecturally fascinating amalgam of old, new, and repurposed homes, schools, federal buildings, churches, general stores, theaters, warehouses, and financial institutions whose owners continuously reinvent their uses for a new generation. From the towering twin sandstone spires of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church to the Italianate facades of the stores lining Second Avenue, downtown Cullman’s beautiful buildings, wide streets, gracious homes and abundant public space inspire the people who use and enjoy them every day, while forming the ideal backdrop for work, play, and worship.

Cullman Warehouse District

Downtown Cullman

In a city overflowing with historic storefronts, warehouses, churches, and homes, the small stretch of shops lining First Avenue in the heart of downtown Cullman has grown to symbolize the local wave of adaptive reuse that has spread throughout the city. The restaurants, specialty shops, clothing boutiques and cafes of the railroad-adjacent Warehouse District — named for its historic build-ings’ former use — are essential stops on many locals’ daily routines. And the district’s innovative Mae’s Food Hall, a collection of restaurants and signature bar, all under one roof, keeps the scene going well into the evening hours and through the weekend. The Warehouse District is also ground zero for tons of seasonal festivals on the annual event calendar, giving the area a vitality that can only come from the kind of place where lots of cool things are always going on at once.

OutDoors &RecreationLEWIS SMITH LAKECovering more than 21,000 acres of scenic Alabama back country, (Lewis) Smith Lake is the gem of outdoors recreation in the Cullman area.

Mild winter temperatures are offset by hot and humid summers, making life on the lake perfect for year-round activities, from picnicking to boating and fishing.

The top activity is fishing, with the lake being home to a healthy population of largemouth and spotted bass, as well as monster saltwater hybrid stripes that can tip the scales at 40 pounds or more. Overall, 70 species of fish claim Smith Lake as home.

BOATS & RAMPSThere are numerous ramps on Smith Lake, including one at Arrowhead Park, and another at Brushy Creek. If you don’t have your own craft to put in the water, you can rent one at the Castle Rock Marina, or the Duncan Bridge Marina.

CLASSIC CULLMAN | 2019 [ 57 ]

HISTORYOurCullman is a thriving economic center in Central Alabama, from a booming automobile supply indus-tries to rich, productive small farms that rank at the top in Alabama agriculture.

Today’s success can be traced back to Col. John Cullmann, a German immigrant who arrived here on the Brindlee Mountain Plateau in 1873 with a vision to build a vast farming community. That year, he negoti-ated an agreement to act as agent for a tract of land measuring nearly

350,000 acres and owned by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company.

That land became Cullman. He was responsible for bringing as many as 100,000 German immigrants to the United States, with many settling in his new town.

As families continued to arrive at his beckoning, the expanding railroad industry targeted Cullman and new opportunities developed overnight, setting the community

on a long journey of prosperity.

With the railroad and productive farms, Cullman became a center of commerce and religious activity with the establishment of St. Ber-nard Abbey.

The opening of Interstate 65 drove forward more business opportuni-ties and set the stage for the rise of the automobile production indus-try. With several major automakers operating in the state, Cullman has become of the state’s top suppliers, using the vast transportation system provided my major highways and the railroad to ship products.

Fast becoming a regional center for festivals and sports, Cullman is ramping up its reputation as a drive-in destination.

With a four-block entertainment district in the heart of down-town, events such as 2nd Fridays, Strawberry Festival and Oktoberfest are only growing larger and more appealing. And Rock the South is setting records each year, topping attendance of more than 60,000 in each of the last two years.

St. Bernard Prep School’s Bloomin’ Festival, set on the pristine grounds of the abbey, draws crowds from across the region. And the school, which is located on the same grounds as the historic Ava Marie Grotto, has added Bernard Blues & BBQ in the last few years to rave reviews.

Looking forward, more energy is pouring into those festivals as well as a growing list of visitors taking advantage of Cullman’s sprawling Heritage Park for sports tourna-ments.

Additionally, the Archery Shooters Association (ASA) Classic, hosted through a partnership of Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism and St. Bernard, is the type of national event that draws hundreds from across the country to the area each year.

Festivals and sports mixed with a good dose of a true Southern hos-pitality showcase a bright welcome mat for tomorrow’s visitors to the Cullman area.

On The Road!

From a toast with friends to a quiet dinner, there’s plenty of choices for a memorable evening out on the town across Cullman.

Sitting back with a chilled glass of Goat Island’s Richter’s Pils at Moe’s Original BBQ and a plate or ribs, or an expertly prepared steak and an Old-Fashioned at 412 Public House, the dining scene is growing with many new choices.

Mae’s Food Hall in the Warehouse District offers a variety of food choices and an outstanding selec-tion of mixed drinks at Ruckus, such as the Dark & Stormy or Champagne Cocktail.

Brothers Pour House is another stop along the downtown food trail, where seafood and drinks get high reviews.

Carlton’s Italian and the Down-town Grill are also among the most popular stops for lunch or dinner, wine or beer choices.
