Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community, I find it difficult to believe that this is the final newsletter for Term Two – it seems like yesterday that we commenced the school year and now we are already at the half way mark. “Time really does fly” when you are having fun! As usual, so many marvellous things have occurred at our wonderful school over the past fortnight such as:

New gymnasium Update

Our new gymnasium and the surrounding area is almost complete which is such fabulous news for everyone. Last week the builder’s office spaces, meeting and lunchrooms were removed in order to make space for the external concreting, asphalting and landscaping. By the end of this term, we are expecting all of the external works and the final touches of the internal aspects of the gymnasium to be completed too. Over the holidays we are expecting the electricity upgrade to be completed and if all goes according to plan, I hope to conduct our very first whole school assembly in our brand new gymnasium on Day One of Term Three – fingers crossed that this becomes a reality. In terms of the turning circle, I am hoping that we will be able to recommence using this facility as of the beginning of Term Three as well. I should be able to provide a definitive answer during the holidays and we will

communicate this via Compass as soon as I know. Once again, thank you everyone for your patience with this issue and I look forward to sharing our new facility with our entire school community.

Junior School Council Update Congratulations to our wonderful Junior School Council (JSC) for organising the recent “Pyjama Day”. It was terrific to see so many of the children (and staff) wearing their pyjamas at school. As you would be aware, the funds raised were to support our sponsored child, Deganta who lives in Bangladesh.

Chess Team Update Wow, we now have a second team that has qualified for the State Finals! Congratulations to our junior chess team which consists of Nikhil (Year 2), Ryley and Rahul (both in Year 3) for their outstanding effort in qualifying. I look forward to seeing how they go at the State Finals a little bit later in the year. Well done and congratulations boys as we are extremely proud of you!

2019 Enrolments I would like to remind families with children who will be beginning school in 2019 that we are taking enrolments now and that they are also closing rapidly as we only have a very small number of positions available. I strongly encourage you to ensure you return your child’s enrolment form to Jenny, Kylie or Julie in the main office as soon as possible.

We also ask that members of our school community assist us by informing any of their neighbours of the enrolment procedures and direct them to the office to collect an enrolment form or our school website – www.glenps.vic.edu.au. School tours are available every Tuesday morning commencing at 9:30 and also upon request. Please call the school on 9802 9938 to book a tour.

A reminder that the JSC have also organised a free dress day for next Friday (29th June) and they are requesting a gold coin donation. This event is to support Arena (Year 1) who will be competing in the IMG Junior Golf tournament in San Diego, USA, over the holidays. Naturally, Arena and her family are thrilled with the support and can’t wait to return and share what occurred at the tournament. As a forward thinking and proactive learning organisation, we have decided to expand this program to include additional children but to also link to our Guiding Statements. As of next semester our JSC will consist of:

a. JSC Service Learning – essentially the children referred to as the current JSC will continue to lead the type

of tasks they are currently undertaking (such as the two mentioned above) and

b. JSC Sustainable Communities – This new section of the JSC will be led by the Environment Captains and their tasks will focus on sustainable issues throughout our school, the local community and globally.

Classes are currently in the process of conducting an election process. I look forward to announcing the additional JSC members early in Term Three as well as the children outlining the sustainability tasks they will focus on throughout Semester Two.

Student Reports and Student Led Conferences Our wonderful teaching staff have been incredibly busy over the last few weeks writing the children’s reports. Your child’s report is a means of us, as your school, to inform the children and their respective families of how they are progressing, but also indicating what they have accomplished, areas for future growth and most importantly, how we can work together for the educational, social and emotional development of the children. For me, student reports are a time to celebrate and acknowledge how far the children have progressed over the course of the semester. A reminder that the children’s reports will be distributed tomorrow (Friday) via Compass and the Student Led Conferences will be held next Monday and Wednesday afternoons/evenings. If you are yet to do so, may I encourage you to log into Compass and book a time for your child’s Student Led Conference. The children have been preparing for their conference and cannot wait to share their learning growth with mum and/or dad.

Vacation Care Program Once again, our school will be implementing our very own Vacation Care (Holiday Care) program during the forthcoming holidays. Included in this newsletter is an overview of the program and the associated costs. Please be aware that ALL FAMILIES are entitled to a 50% rebate (which is not means tested) plus a further rebate which is determined by your family’s 2016-2017 annual taxable income. If you have any questions pertaining to the Vacation Care program please do not hesitate to contact or see Maddy (OSHC coordinator) or me at school. Reminders A reminder that next Friday is the final day of the term and the children will be dismissed at 2.30pm. As per usual, an assembly will be held outside the Early Learning Centre (weather permitting) beginning at approximately 1:45 pm where the Principal Learning and also the Kiwanis Club’s Terrific Kids Awards for the term will be distributed. If it is too wet or cold, we will hold a modified assembly in the school hall. I look forward to seeing as many families as possible at our final assembly for the term. Naturally, our After School Care Program will commence at 2:30 pm. I hope everyone has a wonderful, safe and happy two-week break and I look forward to seeing you on Monday 16th July if not earlier.

ACTING ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT HELEN TOMECEK

NAPLAN WRITING Over the past thirty-odd days I have been leading a team of teachers with the assessment of writing in the NAPLAN project. I have been involved in this capacity for over ten years. As a person at the coalface I have observed the changes in writing responses over time. The students in Year 3 and 5 have a clear understanding of the structure of either Persuasive or Narrative writing. They begin with sentences to engage the reader or give their position and work towards a conclusion. Writing from Year 3 on is now spaced with paragraphs which may only be breaks in writing at the early stages but develop into sentences grouped on one idea to eventually having topic sentences and calls for action in the final paragraph sentence. Children now are able to write their ideas about a topic and give reasons that have increased from just one simple idea to three or more. These ideas have become more elaborate with details that contribute to support their position. They often contain real-life examples, cite statistics, research or authorities. Some of these facts are fictional however, students that know how to use reasonable “made-up” facts as a persuasive device is a strong skill. The students in Year 3 and especially Year 5 have shown an increasing control over a range of punctuation including exclamation marks to emphasize a point in their argument. The vocabulary that the students use has also increased both in the sophistication of the words, the precise use and in the effectiveness of the words used to enhance the writing piece. Over time younger students seem to be correctly writing more difficult words with accuracy. The students are also able to write more and sustain their argument or storyline by appealing to the reader through reason, values or emotions. The writing capacity of our GWPS students is developed through our VOICES. This program builds our students to become writers that can orient, persuade and engage the reader. Through Voice they create a connection to the audience, in their Organization they use effective text structure, in the component Ideas they generate, select and craft ideas. Conventions builds spelling, punctuation and grammar, Word Choice focuses the specific and striking use of language and finally Sentence Fluency to use a variety of sentences that capture and flow logically. With this knowledge and skill building, GWPS students will be able to express themselves effectively in different situations or demands including NAPLAN.

The Kids Corner section of this fortnight’s newsletter has been written by Sayuni (Year 5) and Ria (Year 2). Sayuni has written the following persuasive text:

Keep The Cats Safe!

Who would do such a thing? By who I mean people who hate cats and don’t treat them well. That is

not fair at all. We need to fight for what is right before it’s too late. It is for the benefit of the cats

and the community. If we want something, we have to fight for it, not be a bystander. People love

their cats and to lose who you love, is absolutely devastating.

To begin with, it is vital that we keep cats safe to bring happiness to the world. Soon our adorable

kittens/cats will be extinct if we don’t take serious action. This is not what anyone deserves. Would

it be nice to hurt someone? Anyone would least expect that.

In addition, cats are harmless, little innocent creatures who are extremely cute and would not do

anything to hurt us. So to prevent our cats from getting hurt and suffering, we MUST PROTECT

OUR CATS. We have to be serious about this or we will lose our loved ones forever.

Last but not least, people are infecting rats with poison, however because cats eat them, it also

affects cats. There has been a newspaper article recently and someone was heartbroken because it

happened to them. Their cat died in the park, lying on the floor because of this. Nobody deserves

this.

In conclusion, in order to keep our beloved cats safe, we must do what’s right. If we don’t talk

serious about this issue now, in the future cats will soon be extinct. We must do it now. Nobody

deserves to die just because people don’t like them because it is not fair

Ria has written a procedural text about, “How to Make Blu-Tack Slime”

Aim: To make blutack slime

Tools: Wooden Spoon, bowl, blutack, soap and food colouring

Method: Put the blutack and soap in the bowl.

Mix them together using the wooden spoon. Then kneed them together

Put food colouring in (you can choose any colour you like)

Mix the colour in

Congratulations – you have successfully made Blutack Slime – now start enjoying it. Have fun!!
