2022 ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT

Dear Supporters,

The past year was like no other at the Sacramento Children's Home (SCH) and our family of programs. It has been a year of resilience, innovation, and perseverance. As the worldwide pandemic dragged on for a second year, we did not let it deter us from our Mission. During the pandemic, children and families faced unprecedented challenges, and the dedicated staff in our programs found solutions to problems we would never have imagined in the past. While the pandemic is not quite behind us yet, our future has never been clearer; children and families are in tremendous need, and as we have for over 155 years, with your help and support, we will be there to lend a hand, lift them up, and catch them when they fall. Now more than ever, we must continue to expand our services to meet their growing needs, and to open new doors to a future they never thought was possible.

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

We are excited to share a glimpse into the difference your support has made in the lives of the most vulnerable in our community. This year's Impact Report highlights essential data from the 2020-2021 fiscal year about the impact we are making; providing hope for children and families during difficult times.

The many amazing things that happen every day at SCH are made possible by the outstanding support from community members like you. This has never been more true than during the past two years. During a time when everyone faced challenges, the community continued to support SCH in so many ways. I am genuinely inspired by the dedication and commitment of our donors and supporters.

I hope you enjoy reading about the positive impact the Sacramento Children’s Home has

of SCH residents had access to in-person, on-campus

activities.

Client Success Story: Residential Treatment ProgramOur Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Program provides the highest level of care available at the Sacramento Children’s Home for young men between the ages of 6-19 who have experienced early childhood trauma.

One of those young men, Tomas, relocated to SCH from the Southern California area in 2020. He was referred to SCH because he was struggling in his previous placement with many concerning behaviors, including eloping, physical and verbal aggression (hitting staff and peers), tantrums, property destruction, non-compliance, and being fixated on playing electronics to avoid working his program. He continued many of these behaviors when he arrived at SCH.

Upon arriving at SCH, our Residential staff immediately began to start building a rapport with him, which is important to begin the steps towards succeeding in treatment. Additionally, the treatment team stepped in, his therapist started working with him on processing his past trauma, and one of our mental health specialists worked with him on discovering healthy coping skills to utilize when he was having a difficult time or felt like he needed to act out. Our wonderful Residential team worked with Tomas on improving his social, emotional, and physical interactions with his peers and staff. After some time, Tomas began to be able to better verbalize his feelings appropriately and advocate for himself to help get his needs met without reverting to some of his more concerning past behavior. Tomas eventually stopped running away and trying to physically hurt himself and others when he would get frustrated.

Over the past 2 years, the entire treatment team continued to work tirelessly with Tomas on helping him to meet his treatment goals that were established to allow him to successfully transition to a lower level of care, which is always the ultimate goal of our intensive services.

Tomas made tremendous progress while at the Sacramento Children’s Home, and in February of 2022, he transitioned to a foster home in Southern California that was closer to his family, and he is doing very well. We thank the entire Residential Treatment Team for their help in making successes like these possible!

stress because of using the Crisis Nursery.

and from the Crisis Nursery.

Client Success Story: Crisis NurseryClaudia, like many of the parents who seek support through the Sacramento Children’s Home Crisis Nursery, was struggling to maintain a job while also trying to ensure safe and reliable childcare for her young daughter, Cinthia. Over the last two years, this has been a constant struggle for so many parents. As a single parent with a limited support system, she lacked reliable child care and didn’t have family and friends she could turn to for support in caring for her daughter. Luckily Claudia heard about the Crisis Nursery and contacted our north location for childcare support while she tried to find a new job and was interviewing for positions. With the help of the Crisis Nursery Case Manager, Claudia also submitted an application for subsidized childcare so that she would have a long-term, reliable and affordable option to ensure her daughter was safe when she was at work providing for their young family.

With the holidays nearing, Claudia was struggling to meet her family’s basic needs, and she also didn’t have the extra funds for holiday-related expenses like gifts from Santa for her daughter. Using the Crisis Nursery services for support, Claudia was able to go to interviews and was quickly hired for a new and exciting position. And as a client of the Nursery during the holidays, she was able to receive support through the Sacramento Children’s Home Holiday Giving Program and was able to provide for a bright holiday season for her daughter. While Claudia is well on her way to being self-sufficient, she continues to use the Crisis Nursery as her back up plan when she needs it. And she continues to be so thankful for the Nursery, knowing she is able to leave her daughter in a safe and loving environment and that when Cinthia is at the Nursery, she is provided with exceptional care.

Thank you for supporting families like Claudia and Cinthia. Because of supporters like you, our Crisis Nursery is available free of charge and without judgment for families like this that need a little extra help.

Family Resource Centers Builds strong families through parent education, crisis intervention, connection to resources, and social support.

Client Success Story: Family Resource CentersAt the Sacramento Children's Home Family Resource Centers (FRCs), our staff provides community based and proven services at no cost to the diverse communities of Valley Hi, Meadowview and North Sacramento. These services include intervention services, court approved parenting education, home visitation, engagement services, and school readiness.

Recently at Meadowview FRC, our staff was serving a father and his two small children. He and his family escaped violence and many other struggles in their home country of Afghanistan. They arrived to the Sacramento area as refugees several months ago. He and his family were referred to the Meadowview FRC by word of mouth from friends in the local community. He had sought help from the FRC because he had not yet received permission to work in the United States, had no car, and had not been able to secure stable housing on his own. Through our program, he received referrals to job centers, local food banks and diaper banks, free clothing, and access to educational workshops.

Another one of the family’s urgent needs was help with transportation until they were able to purchase a car on their own. The father asked the FRC if they could assist him in finding a bike so he could commute around, get some necessities, and apply for public assistance in the community. Without some form of transportation, he was forced to walk everywhere, including long distances, to access services and food and diapers for his small children. Luckily our Meadowview FRC Team was able to assist the father in getting a bike to help him get around town.

He demonstrated great strength in being open to any and all resources our staff suggested and appeared to have a family support network, as he was currently staying with his relative. After receiving a lot of great support from our team, he was very grateful and emailed us this letter:

“Dear Madam, Thanks for the bike I received yesterday, as you know that I am a new immigrant and I don't have the budget to buy a car. This bike can help me to go to the markets or some agencies for appointments so that I can use the bike for my daily activities. I would like to say many thanks to your organization.”

The father stays in touch with our Meadowview Family Resource Center and continues to be interested in opportunities to better his family’s situation, including an interest in attending financial literacy workshops. Over the last two years, our Family Resource Centers have strived to provide all services possible during the COVID-19 pandemic, including finding ways to help families achieve their goals in a new environment.

The Foster Youth Tutoring Program is intended to support foster youth that are enrolled in the Sacramento City School District. The program focuses on four main pillars: tutoring, homework help, mental health support, including referrals to other services, and relationship building. Therapeutic Behavioral Services (TBS) are adjunctive 1:1 supplemental specialty mental health services designed to change targeted behavior(s) and will help the family identify outside resources that support sustained change in a targeted behavior (when appropriate), and work on skills development with the youth, caregiver and other natural supports to further support sustained change in a targeted behavior.

The California Family Urgent Response System, or “Cal-FURS,” is a statewide urgent response hotline to provide 24/7 support service for foster youth and resource families living throughout California. Over the last two years, the Sacramento Children’s Home lost two instrumental champions of our important work. Former Board member and past president Ken DeBruhl and longtime SCH Guild member and supporter Anne McCall.

IN MEMORIAM

Ken DeBruhl is an exemplary representation of what it means to be a philanthropist. Ken DeBruhl and his wife Anca have been committed to the Sacramento Children’s Home and its mission for many years. Ken committed his time, talent and treasure to ensure that the Sacramento Children’s Home continued to be able to serve the most vulnerable in our community. His support goes back nearly twenty years and includes a tremendous amount of his time and thousands of dollars in generous support of SCH events and programs, as well as support of building projects, including the development of Cottage I dedicated as the DeBruhl Family Center in 2010.

Ken was extremely generous over the years, and had contributed numerous financial and in-kind gifts to the Sacramento Children’s Home, and was a member of our Children’s Circle for nearly twenty years.

Ken DeBruhl

In addition to his generous philanthropic support Ken DeBruhl also served on the Sacramento Children’s Home Board of Directors from May 2002 until June 2011 and again from 2012 until June 2018. During that time, Ken served as the SCH Board of Directors President from 2008 until 2010, helping to build a strategic plan that was a vital tool in maintaining the successful direction for the Agency.

Ken’s philanthropic support has made a profound impact on the Sacramento Children’s Home and has gone a long way toward fulfilling the mission of the Sacramento Children’s Home and youth in our community. Ken truly led by example in his commitment to the cause of supporting the most vulnerable children in our community, and we appreciate his longtime partnership in giving local youth a better tomorrow.

Ken served as the SCH Board of Directors President from 2008 until 2010, helping to build a strategic plan that was a vital tool in maintaining the successful direction for the Agency.

9 | 2022 Annual Impact Report

Anne’s support of the Sacramento Children’s Home was truly unmatched. She was a beautiful woman both inside and out, and she had a tremendously big heart. For nearly 30 years, Anne was a generous and dedicated member of the SCH Family.

Anne’s involvement with the Sacramento Children’s Home first began when she joined the SCH Guild in 1994. As an SCH Guild member, Anne attended all 23 Crab Feeds, only missing just one. She loved working at the La Casita Gift Shop, attended many fundraising events including Luxe for Life, Haute Stuff, Wine Women and Shoes, the 150th Anniversary, among many others.

Anne was particularly special and a valued member of our SCH family. From day one Anne was so generous and helpful in so many different ways. Whatever it was that we asked of her to help with, she answered the call – come to an event – yes, would you be willing to support x, y or z – yes, would you be willing to donate your Tahoe, or Capitola homes to our auction – yes. Her support of the Sacramento Children’s Home was truly unmatched, and we feel blessed to have known her, to have shared her company and enjoyed her friendship.

In the very early years of the Sacramento Children’s Home Crisis Nursery, when support for that program was urgently needed to keep the doors open, Anne and her mother toured the Nursery and Anne advocated for their family to get involved in supporting the important work of the Nursery and other nonprofits that support children and families. She encouraged her mother to start what is now known as the Terra Family Foundation. Since 2007, the Terra Foundation has been an instrumental supporter of the Sacramento Children’s Home and particularly our Crisis Nursery supporting it generously through several gifts and grants. We are so grateful to Anne, her family, and the Terra Family Foundation for their generous commitment to SCH and our mission to open doors to the future for children and families.

And even in Anne’s passing, she continued her legacy of generosity and commitment to the community – In late 2021 Anne, through her estate, made an astounding $1 million dollar contribution in support of the Sacramento Children’s Home. This is among the largest donations ever received by our organization and we are eternally grateful for her huge heart and thoughtfulness.
