Principal’s MessagePrincipal’s MessageAssalamualaikum wbt

Welcome to the 2021 Al-Taqwa College Year Book! It was another challenging year and we thank Allah (swt) for overcoming the adversities around us caused by the pandemic. A big thank you to the College Team Leaders for their initiative and collaboration with DHHS during the various lockdowns throughout the year. Also thank you to all our stakeholders and the community for their continuous support without which we would not have achieved a steady recovery of Coronavirus infections in our vicinity.

Just like the previous year, we issue the Yearbook in digital form in which we unveil the College’s developments and activities. Despite the Covid lockdowns and remote learning, our staff performed extremely well via Zoom sessions, examinations and competitions e.g. Annual Quran Competition, media, drama, Graduations just to name a few activities. I am overwhelmed that in spite of the fact that we were heavily immersed in COVID-19 implementations, my staff maintained a high degree of patience and perseverance to complete their duties – their commitment is immeasurable and I thank them dearly.

COVID Lockdown Unfortunately another COVID breakout occurred at the College on 4 August with the entire school community forced into isolation and testing. A testing hub was set up at the College along with a vaccination hub. The College followed the Government required Covid-19 protocols and precautions, as we have done throughout the pandemic. I am very proud of the way everyone rose to the challenge. It continues to be a real team effort involving all our staff, students and families. I thank them immensely. A small team worked closely with the Department of Health on a daily basis and received recognition for their collective effort from the Minister for Health which was deeply appreciated. Thanks to the Al-Taqwa vigilant Leadership Team – keep up the good work! On behalf of everyone at the College, my heartfelt thanks to Jeroen Weimar, Commander, Covid-19 Response, Department of

Health, for his personal support and leadership and his team for being readily available in assisting us. We have unbounded respect for him and his teams’ professionalism, dedication and empathy for our community.

The reality of COVID-19 affecting teaching and learning across the board - where teachers and students had to again adjust with the constant revolving door of learning from remote to face-to-face. Thanks to our Learning Platform, Schoolbox, alhamdulilllah, our teachers survived to meet the challenges! They deserve a pat on the back.

My special thanks to our OHS Department for implementing and monitoring the COVID safety measures so diligently during the year.

I would like to convey my heartfelt thanks to all staff for their patience in going back to remote learning during the snap lockdown for which our College was closed from in February. It was such a relief when the Premier announced that schools could reopen on 18 February and return to face-to-face learning. All went smoothly during the remote learning period. I would also like to thank all parents and guardians for their cooperation during the periods of remote learning.

Year 12 Extra Classes In an effort to assist and improve VCE students’ learning, the College conducted extra after school and weekend classes. Parents were encouraged to support and ensure that respective VCE students took advantage of the extra classes to boost their confidence and obtain better ATAR results. Last year, three ATAR Top Scorers were rewarded by the College. The presentation was held on the 10 February and I was indeed very happy with last year’s results and wish all my dear students the very best for their chosen career paths.

2021 Al-Taqwa College Yearbook Page 3

NAPLAN ExamsOur students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sat for the online NAPLAN tests from Monday 17 through to Wednesday 19 May. We had to close the College from Friday 28 May to Monday 7 June, as per the Victorian Government announcement of a seven-day circuit breaker lockdown. All students reverted to remote learning using Schoolbox. Our special thanks to ACARA for their special consideration in changing our NAPLAN exams to 17-19 May due to Eid celebrations. Alhamdullilah, our students did very well this year despite the lockdowns and remote learning periods.

Year 12 GraduationThe Year 12 Graduation was celebrated at the College, being viewed by parents via Zoom. The Graduation was celebrated with 95 students at our College on Wednesday 15 December. The tree-planting ceremony was one of the traditions included in the Program. I thank all Year 12 Coordinators and teachers for their contributions to the students and also for their effort in preparing this auspicious event. Also my best wishes to all students for their VCE exams and their choice of career paths.

Sports HallDespite the continuous lockdowns, our Sports Hall Project progressed tremendously well. According to our Project Engineer, there is still approximately 20% of works to be completed and it is anticipated to have this done by the end of March. The three month delay was connected to the unprecedented lockdowns, workers inability to attend, vaccine requirements and holiday stoppages.

This magnificent Sports Hall will adequately cater for many school functions like the Graduations, sporting activities, competitions, seminars and much more, inshaAllah. We envisage to host inter-school sports, competitions, exhibitions and other sporting events. The 120mx60m hall is well-equipped with four sport courts, commercial kitchen, gym rooms, stage,

changing rooms, offices, retractable seats and so much more. It is spacious and has the capacity to hold approximately 3,000 guests at a time for functions. We are really excited and looking forward to the official opening ceremony and would welcome officials from the Government to enlighten the ceremony, inshaAllah.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all stake-holders for their continuous support of the College and look forward to the next chapter in 2022 with greater enthusiasm, success and a safer environment. Wishing you all the best and may Allah (swt) protect us. Ameen.

WasslamOmar Hallak, Principal

Page 4 2021 Al-Taqwa College Yearbook

The year 2021 continued to be same as 2020 in terms of the Covid-19 pandemic. The College put a great deal of effort in implementing remote learning, despite the breakouts of Covid-19 and I would like to thank Mr Hallak and his Team Leaders for the magnificent work especially in collaboration with the Victorian Health Department. My heartfelt thanks to all those involved.

It was a tough year for Al-Taqwa College but through hard-work they kept the school and community safe. I am very proud that the staff managed very well in overcoming the challenges during Covid-19. From the Board’s perspective, I highly commend the good work by the Management and Staff who had performed with strong commitment and collaboration with the

Government and updating every single aspect to staff, students and parents.

Another significant achievement is the building of the Sports Centre which is the biggest project in the history of the College. Thanks to Mr Omar Hallak for his vision and the courage to indulge in such a huge project for the College. I look forward to see the activities in the new hall and of course to the official opening, inshaAllah.

On behalf of the Board, I wish everyone at Al-Taqwa a very happy and successful 2022.

eLearningeLearning2021 was yet another fabulous year for eLearning at ATC. eLearning has become a part of daily teaching and learning, whether it be remote or face-to-face. The ease with which we switched between remote learning and face-to-face over the number of snap lockdowns indicates that eLearning has become an integral part of ATCs teaching and learning processes.

Schoolbox, ATC’s Learning Management System, is now the one stop shop for all staff, students and parents for all school related activities. With newer updates and online learning friendly features, we are well on our way to create borderless classrooms that caters to the needs of 21st century learning skills. The launch of Schoolbox in 2020 helped enhance active collaboration with students, parents and teachers, which has enabled them to become confident users of our platforms and made the 2021 eLearning period another successful year.

Our school also has successfully embarked on its journey to run eAssessments for all our common assessments and exams in secondary. We aim to achieve the same for all primary assessments in 2022. eAssessments are equipping our students with skills required for many online external assessments like PAT, NAPLAN, ICAS etc, and this has also helped teachers to minimise marking, printing and administering assessments. Currently the school is using Education Perfect as our official online assessment platform.

ATC is preparing to hold NAPLAN online in 2022. Another exciting milestone as we prepare the school to join many other schools across the state to host the NAPLAN online assessments for the first time.

With all of these exciting innovations unfolding at ATC, the College is continuing to work on the 1-to-1 initiative for all students in ATC. In 2021 our Year 6’s beamed with delight to hold their own laptops.

The transition to online has also reduced the waste to our environment to a great extent. Almost all form of communication has now been moved to our different online channels, to ensure efficiency in our messages and allows the community to be informed of any new developments.

Remote LearningAn unforgettable journey, a learning curve with technical skills for both students and teachers. Our teachers have explored many online platforms to enhance students’ remote learning experience, with some examples below.

Kahoot, Padlet and Mentimeter allows increased engagement within the classroom through the utilisation of activities and quizzes.

Increased collaboration among students via Schoolbox components such as Collaboration Documents, Surveys, Polls, and the Social Stream.

The introduction of the Zoom platform allowed students to collaborate and participate in their learning with breakout rooms, immersive views and reactions.

Page 6 2021 Al-Taqwa College Yearbook

Education Perfect has been a driving force in our transition to online, with a plethora of activities and tasks which has allowed students to compete with one another.

AT C Data Management ProjectOne of the key factors of a high performing school is one that is able to effectively use data to inform planning, teaching, and most importantly learning.

On our path to modernise the way we teach and how students learn, we started with establishing online assessments across all the learning faculties using Education Perfect in Secondary and are working towards establishing this in Primary. The online platform enabled teachers to effectively analyse students’ performance using the analytics that Education Perfect provides.

At Al-Taqwa College, we recognise the importance of continuous improvement in all aspects of our operations. Data that is related to student wellbeing, academic achievement, and attendance can now be captured efficiently and displayed visually via live dashboards. These dashboards capture and display useful information in real-time for students, teachers, administrators and management.

Extra CurricularExtra CurricularAlthough 2021 started out like any other year, the Extra Curricular (EXCA) Team quickly adjusted to new and exciting ways of engaging our students through the challenge of the pandemic.

The year started out with the selection of SRC students from Years 5-12. Students went through a nomination process and interviews to ensure they were the right candidates to lead their peers. The highlight of the term was the SRC Badge Ceremony, where students were presented with their badges and given a chance to hear from their heads.

Two new classes were established under the EXCA banner in Term 1.

The Confidence On Our Own Program (COOO) commenced with a group of Year 1 students and then extended to Foundation and Year 2 students later in the year. The join initiative been EXCA and SWB gave a selected group of students the opportunity to develop their friendship making skills, confidence and belief in themselves. These ran remotely during lockdown.

EXCA also teamed up with the Media Department to run a Journalism Program with Year 1, 2 and 5 students. Sis Huda used her training as a journalist to guide students with the ins and outs of journalism, reporting and writing news stories. The sessions also prepared students for filming with the Media Team. These classes ran both face to face, and transitioned to remote learning when necessary.

In order to empathise with those who have a disability, Extra Curricular Activities took part in Down Syndrome Day. To raise awareness of Down Syndrome, students

wore coloured and fancy socks to join the #lotsofsocks Campaign. Students were able to recognise and understand that not all of us are the same and we need to support those who may struggle in different ways.In order to bring some cheer between lockdowns, students in the primary school dressed up in Eid clothes to celebrate our very special Eid. Students dressed in their very best and enjoyed the day in their most finest of clothing.

The Open Day is one of the biggest events of the school year. Extra Curricular Activities trained our SRC students to be the leaders of the day, and guided new and prospective parents through our beautiful school. The SRC students made us proud and answered all parent queries politely and most respectfully. The EXCA Team also held a stall where we enjoyed conversations with parents and showcasing our activities over the years.

In Semester 2, the EXCA team teamed up with Year 3 to create a one-of-a-kind sustainability project. The idea was to transform the old greenhouse into a functional and beautiful planting area – using recycled bottles and caps. We worked through the planning, ordering and bottle collection process and inshAllah will continue this project in 2022. This year, Foundation to Year 2 students had lots of fun with EXCA activities. We had Science Club in Term 1 which allowed our students to work in the field of their interest. It also gave them the opportunity to take a look at past and recent scientific inventions. Students were engaged and refined their own scientific skills and knowledge. They also were able to complete science

Page 8 2021 Al-Taqwa College Yearbook

activities and develop their interest in science. Throughout the whole year, our Reading Club was always in high demand – even during remote learning. Reading Club is one of the most authentic reading experiences students can get. Reading a book, and engaging in discussion with peers over that book is exactly how we approach reading. Students are encouraged to continue reading for fun as they get older. Our lovely students increased their confidence during our Reading Club and improved their reading skills, whilst exposing students to a wide range of written texts.

To celebrate the completion of our first term of learning in 2021, the EXCA Team held a special themed picnic during the last week of Term 1. Foundation students brought along their favourite cuddly bear for their Teddy Bears Picnic. Year 1 students celebrated their

superstar term of learning by coming dressed as their chosen superhero or princess. It was a memorable day, and one which our Foundation, Year 1 students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed.

The Year 12 Annual Iftar was a huge event for the EXCA Team, in collaboration with the SWB and Counselling Teams. Year 12 Staff and students were invited for an iman boosting evening during Ramadan - full of delicious food, excellent prizes, lots of laughter and a yummy cupcake box to end the night on a sweet note.

Extra CurricularExtra Curricular

During remote learning, we recognised our Year 12 students needed some encouragement and boost to their morale. So the awesome threesome that are the EXCA, Student Well Being and Counselling Teams went at it again - this time purchasing, hand packaging and delivering personalised care packages to our students. The care packages were received with much surprise and gratitude, and were a special compilation of all

things needed to nourish the heart, mind and soul. The 2021 secondary boys’ Inter-class Basketball Competition provided the opportunity for all Secondary

classes to show case their skills as well as working as a team/class to be crowned the champions in their year level. The event was highly competitive and all classes performed well. Each year level was crowned as the champions and one player awarded the Most Valuable Player Award.

The Virtual Self-Defence Workshop gave students the opportunity to learn certain skills from Br Stefanos Chrisoulis. It was aimed at Year 8-9 and a fantastic way to get connected and active during the remote learning period.

Page 10 2021 Al-Taqwa College Yearbook

For the third year running, we had a panel of enthusiastic, highly involved committee of 12 Year 11-12 Students. We met on a three-week basis with the Vice-Principal, Mohammad Hallak, to discuss important matters and progressive ways we can move forward as a College. Our students made us proud in the way they presented themselves, showing great leadership and Islamic values. They took onus of their role by representing the voices of the entire cohort and communicating their concerns in each meeting. We are so proud of them, and have complete faith that they will go on to do great things within our Muslim and Australian community.

Another school year has come to an end and what a year it has been. After a stressful year, the approaching school holidays will be a welcome break for many of us.

With the weather still relatively kind and restrictions eased back, this school holidays are the perfect time to use the warmer weather to get outside and get active.

This year’s school holidays might look a little different to other years however there are plenty of ways to keep you entertained during the school holidays while staying COVID safe.

But first up, here are some tips to staying safe and healthy during school holidays.

Keep social distancing in mind – at the park, at tourist attractions or at a friend’s house, you should try to stay 1.5 metres away from others where possible.

Practice good hand hygiene – wash your hands often and properly, and carry hand sanitiser for times when soap and water isn’t available.

Cover coughs and sneezes with a clean tissue or your elbow.

Stay at home when you’re sick, even with a sniffle, and stay away from others who are unwell.

Plan ahead so that you understand how restrictions might affect places you plan to visit.

If you arrive at a crowded park, attraction or party and can’t practice social distancing, leave and return another time when it’s quieter.

Keep a record of where you’ve been and when so you’re confident of the details if any Public Health Alerts are released.

Get tested for COVID-19 if you have any symptoms, no matter how mild they seem.

Remember that you know your family best – plan activities that will work for you and your family’s health.

Stay safe and enjoy the holiday. May 2022 be a better year for everyone, inshaAllah.

Another year of the COVID 19 pandemic struck the state and all schools into lockdown. It is with sadness and disappointment that physical library normal operation, planned activities and programs for the year were cancelled. However, the Library Department was able to continue serving staff and students learning and reading through online borrowing platforms that were initiated. The online reading platforms were intended to cater the different learning and reading levels of students from lower primary to Year 10. These platforms included Wheelers Books, Renaissance, Sunshine Classics, Reading Eggs, Epic. Aside from these platforms there were also other online educational sources like TV4Education and ClickView. Thank you to our Principal, Omar Hallak and the College Management for the endless support and funding of these programs.

In Term 2, the Library in collaboration with the Primary Arabic and Islamic Department were able to conduct the AliGator Islamic Book Fair. It was a timely program for the College community to buy for Ramadan decorations and Eid presents for family and friends. From the success of this event, the Library and Primary Arabic and Islamic Department were able to purchase new resources for students and teachers. To celebrate the spirit of Ramadan, beautiful displays were created in the Library and was awarded a prize by the Arabic Department Ramadan Competition.

During lockdowns, the librarians were constantly updating the library management system and acquiring new knowledge through web training and Zoom tutorials. The Schoolbox Library section was regularly updated and sourced with read aloud books, free eBooks, web links and other educational sites. We also acquired new resources for student circulation, including the Victorian Premier Reading Challenge books through purchases, Book Club rewards and donations. Our sincere thanks to Truganina Progress Association Inc. for their generosity in funding the acquisition of 2021 Children’s Book Council of Australia Winners books.

This year, the Library has been working with other departments to showcase programs, appreciate student artworks and projects by displaying them in the Library. We aquired the assistance of the Media Department with a video exhibit on how to use the Library, how to search and borrow, and what is expected from library patrons, was uploaded on the Schoolbox library section.

We thank you for your ongoing support and look forward to 2022.

SEEPSEEPLearning together even when we were apart…we sailed through another year, 2021!! Hurray!!It has been an incredible journey this year despite all the uncertainties. Learning at school or learning from home, our students shone through them all.

When at school ... We turned into little scientists with Professor Bunsen’s incursion and had great fun learning about the amazing science facts. We turned into mathematicians when we marched around the school measuring equipment and doing calculations.

We experienced the beautiful journey of Hajj by performing and learning about all the rituals. We enjoyed decorating our class window for Ramadan, showcasing an amazing display for everyone.

Remote learning was no less fun ... We learned to become more responsible and independent learners

2021 Al-Taqwa College Yearbook Page 15

when learning from home and looked forward to our Zoom sessions.

We had great fun with our Well-Being activities every week. We played Kahoot quizzes, shared riddles and jokes, had laughs together, created masks and head gears and muting/unmuting on zoom was an experience in itself.

We took the role of journalists, when presenting our Geography travel brochures. We did our germination experiment and created our very own Plant Journals. We turned into Little Master Chefs for the cooking competition. The list goes on ...

Finally, the year has come to an end and it has been an unforgettable year leaving behind a series of learning experience ... we look forward to a much healthier and safer year in 2022.Sapna SachdevaYEAR 3 SEEP Sis Manal and her marvellous 4H students were grateful for so much in 2021, such as being able to learn at school for most of Semester 1, being taught by the best

teachers in all subjects, being taught by an amazing placement teacher, reduced work load during remote learning and more. Some of our favourite memories from this year are as follows.• Our first day in 4H!• When Sis Shabana taught us Maths• When Sis Sapna came to our class to say hello• When we had a picnic with year 3 and Year 5 SEEP• Our Zoo incursion via Zoom• Year 4s movie Zoom• Design and Technology with Jeff• Hajj practice day

2021 another memorable and unforgettable year for the Year 5 SEEP students. After an unprecedented year of the pandemic in 2020, the academic year 2021 started with new hope for both students and teachers alike. Students came to school in Term 1 with renewed feelings of expectations and emotions having been through many challenges the previous year, little did they expect it turn out to be a deja vu of the year 2020.

In Semester 1, students dived into their learning with renewed motivation. They tackled all subjects and put their best foot forward learning new skills and enhanced their knowledge. From the Gold Rush in History in History to Plant and Animal Adaptation in Science they showed that they were an enthusiastic bunch. In Term 2 students sat their NAPLAN tests and came out with flying colours. Though all excursions were cancelled, students looked forward to just being at school and doing all their normal school activities.

But then came along Semester 2, when they got to celebrate Eid ul Adha and practiced their Hajj rituals, just to suddenly be back to remote learning. Just like that these young enterprising students got into online learning mode. Thanks to the magic of the internet and the experience they had from last year, the students were able to face the challenges head on. They worked through their ICAS Tests online on several zoom sessions. It was once again the team effort of parents, students and teachers that has brought us through 2021.

The students were hopeful that they would return to some face-to-face learning. They continued to remain positive and say Alhamdullilah we have reached the end of the year successfully. We are a few steps ahead and will face any challenge that life has to throw at us.

All the very best to this wonderful bunch of students and inshaAllah, 2022 will be a promising year with greater achievements.Jacqueline David & Shabana ChowdhryGRADE 5 SEEP

A big congratulations to the Year 6 and 7 SEEP Maths classes on their outstanding performance this year. It was by no means an easy year, with students being pushed to a higher level amidst the challenges of online learning. Yet, they were able to rise to the challenge. I look forward to seeing how you all progress and hope you all keep up the motivation to strive for your best selves, inshallah.Shahinaz BakirSEEP MATHEMATICS

Let us farewell this academic year with new energies and new hopes to welcome a new one. Your preparation, efforts, hard work, and determination have not gone unnoticed and have made you ALL the successful SEEP students that you are. It was honour to teach both the Year 6 and Year 7 cohort and wish you all the very best on your future endeavours. Emina Sinanovic SEEP SCIENCE The World’s Countries Should Discuss the Causes of Warfare, Aariz Khan (Year 6 SEEP English)Booming bombs and rifle shots. Dreadful tears and blood spots. Economies are down and people are poor. Lives are lost and nations are torn. Such is the outcome of war. Brutal, tragic war. But all of that can change. And it starts with the governments, our leaders. If our world’s leaders can get together to discuss the reasons for war, we would be able to avoid it at all costs and then the world would change for the better. The countries must get together to discuss this as it would lessen the amount of refugees around the globe, They wouldn’t need to spend so much money on military

anymore and it would aid them in achieving world peace. Now, do you still believe that lives should be sacrificed and war should continue?

If countries come together to discuss and resolve the causes of war, then there wouldn’t be so many displaced refugees around the world. Most, if not all, of the world’s refugees come from warzones. If our country’s leaders step in to diminish the chances of war from occurring, then we wouldn’t have so many people risking their lives to illegally escape their nations. An example of this is portrayed in “Mahtab’s Story”, which is a novel that was inspired by a true event that took place in one Afghani girl’s life. In this novel, “Mahtab and her family are forced to leave their home in Herat and journey secretly though the rocky mountains to Pakistan and then to faraway Australia.” Although the journeys may be unlike each other, this is still generally true for the 26,400,000 refugees around the world (According to the UNHCR). Ultimately, my first reason to why the countries of the world should get together to solve the causes of war is so that the number of refugees around the world can heavily decrease.

In addition to this, addressing the root causes of war would benefit every nation as it would mean they would need to spend less on military. From a study conducted by the SIPRI. (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute), countries spend on average around $148.4 USD on military every year. The country with the highest expenditure was USA, with $778 Billion. That. Much. Money. Gone. Gone from spending on military. Governments are paying to kill and destroy lives. If war can come to a stop once and for all, this much money can go to homeless people, people with illnesses like cancer or people who lost their jobs. This all proves that saving billions of dollars for people in need is one more reason for why the countries of the world need to discuss and prevent the causes of war.

Moreover, having every nation address the reasons for warfare would mean that they would come to conclusions and agreements, resulting in world peace. It’s pretty simple, no war = global peace. I don’t really need to explain further because, who wants to go against world peace? No one does. If this simple method of achieving world peace is found, there is no reason for the governments of the world NOT to address the causes of war. One large example of countries NOT discussing the root causes of war is SEEPSEEP

2021 Al-Taqwa College Yearbook Page 19

WWII. WWII began as a result of Germany invading Poland as a start to rule Europe. If Adolf Hitler had discussed his desire for power then some territory of Europe might have been given to him in an improvised manner. This straightforward act of discussion would have stopped humanity from fighting the biggest war in history. In summary, addressing the root causes of war will prevent war and it would also result in something that leaders have tried to attain for a long time - world peace.

There is only one way forward for the world to be brighter and better in every way possible. The world’s nations must come together to address and discuss the causes of war. It is essential that they do this so that refugee numbers around the globe decline, so that money spent on military can go to better causes and so that world peace can be achieved. People turn to war when logic and discussion fails, so we must get our leaders to come together and discuss war’s causes to eradicate warfare once and for all.

Student ServicesStudent ServicesThis year has been a challenging one for us all, yet the school community has been closer than ever! The Student Services Department has always considered the needs of children above all else. With the difficulties that Covid-19 lockdowns has brought to our school, we developed innovative methods of practice to support the students during their remote learning experiences. We were able to gather the support of integration aids, teachers and our inhouse speech pathologist to work collaboratively in providing the extra support that our students needed. We look forward to a stable year in 2022 with onsite learning to further support our children as our department continues to expand. Sarra Bakri

It is a great pleasure to present to our College community the Arabic, Religion and Quran Department’s report for 2021.

It was a tough and challenging year but our College community adapted very well to the changes we had experienced this year with learning, working and in life more broadly.

The teachers managed to connect with their students during screen time and create a loving and exciting Zoom sessions where students shared their feelings, lockdown experiences, cooking and even their own pets.

Teachers created many engaging and amazing online resources and activities to ensure the students did not miss on their learning.

Despite the challenges and the encounters, we got the students and ourselves into the spirit of Ramadan and fasting, the Primary Islamic Department hosted the Ali-Gator Book Fair where students got the opportunity to purchase a variety of Islamic books and games such as

shining lanterns, fun stationary, games to Eid banners. Students were thrilled to attend and purchase many goodies, and of course gifts for their loved ones.

We had Ramadan class competitions, teachers and students decorated their classroom doors to create a Ramadan environment in the whole primary school. Winners received certificates, vouchers and golden stars.

We hrlf Hajj Day where our primary students recited the Talbiyah and completed the rituals of a real pilgrimage to Makkah. The Hajj Practice Day was conducted per

year level, the students with the teachers performed the Tawaf around a Kabah seven times, walked between Safa and Marwa and drank Zamzam water brought from Makkah. This was an exciting experience for our students and staff and we pray we are all given the opportunity to complete this fifth pillar of Islam, inshaAllah.

We continued to offer the termly Surah Competition. Students memorised specific verses from a particular Surah according to their age and year level.

Quran Competition was the highlight of our College activities as per every year. The Competition was held in October and students were judged by Sheikh Jalabneh from Jordan, Sheikh Haithem Rifae and Brother Jelil Memti. The Competition included memorisation, Kutba and Adhan. Students received certificates, trophies and vouchers.

The Adhan Program was introduced this year. Br Mustafa trained a group of primary students to recall the Adhan with beautiful recitation and performance.

Although we had many lockdowns this year, the Islamic Department organised off line competitions to encourage students to do activities off screen. The activities included a cooking competition. On behalf of the Department, I would like to thank the College Management for funding and supporting this important event.

I would like to thank all the staff in our Department for working hard to make the Zoom sessions productive and joyful for the students and thank the parents for their patience and endless support.

I sincerely thank our students and parents for trying their best coping with the changes this year. We wish you a safe summer break and look forward to seeing

you all again in 2022 where we can continue to grow and nurture our young Islamic students.

Art DepartmentArt DepartmentThis year Foundation and Year 1s explored their inner artist, through the exploration of visual, media and performing arts.

In Term 1, we focused on skills for colouring, cutting and pasting. Also, we enjoyed finger painting and created different shapes, animals and objects. Students created and performed drama, using the elements of role, situation and focus in dramatic play and improvisation. During Term 2 we created art pieces through the art style of collage and water colour. Term 3 was exciting as we worked on hands on activities and re-explored collages. Term 4 presented opportunities to explore the world as your artwork. We used everyday objects to create our masterpiece. We drew and

painted Art works which were inspired by many famous artists.

The Year 3 and 4 students explored the diverse nature of Art. Students explored the beauty of artistic expression and art around world. They explored techniques, materials and created imaginative, purposeful pieces of work. In semester one, students focused on colour wheels, how colours work together and the way different colours are created. Students learned to mix colour to generate different forms of art focused on skills such as drawing, mixing, cutting, painting and colouring. They also focused on the technique of blending/shading which involved creating silhouette drawings.

Students explored a variety of abstract arts using elements inspired by Pablo Picasso’s cubism. In semester two, students created artwork using skills like drawing, cutting, and pasting of colour paper and newspaper to make a city view. They also created underwater creatures in 2D and 3D shapes. Students explored Arts Around the World learn to draw and create Mexican’s Papel Picado.

Our Year 4 students did very well this year, even though it was another tough year. Students

learned different types of art from around the world exclusive to certain cultures, ethnicities and religions. They used watercolour

Page 24 2021 Al-Taqwa College Yearbook

to paint Indian Taj Mahal with different mediums. They created the Queen’s guards using popsicle sticks, used different tools like stick, cotton buds and paint to create dot paintings on Australian animals. They explored the Japanese paper craft of origami and learned how to fold paper a certain way.

Students also experienced different painting techniques inspired by the artist. They recognised the characteristics of Van Gogh’s paintings and created textures using brush strokes, and created their own ‘Sunflowers’. They learned about the artist Claude Monet, his life, his artwork and why he is so renowned. Students learned that collage is a piece of art made by sticking various different materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric on to a backing. They developed their fine motor skills, and created own collages favourite season trees using magazines and catalogues.

Our Year 4 students all know that, Life is tough, but art is fun.

In Year 5, students learned different elements of art, such as: line, shape colour and form. These are the basic elements that are used by artists in creating art. Students learned about the art element of shape and used it in artworks inspired by famous artists. One artist that used a lot of shapes in his artwork was Henri Matisse. We learned more about his life and how he came to create his art. Students were also shown the many types

of lines: thick, thin, horizontal, vertical, zigzag, diagonal, curly, curved, spiral, etc. which are often very expressive. Lines are basic tools for artists—though some artists show their lines more than others. Students were able to create a cross-contour drawing using the art element of line. Students were engaged in making their own 3D emojis using the element of form.

During the year, these elements were used to create aesthetically pleasing work. When students make art, they understand and apply these elements of art into their own art work.

Debating Department Debating Department 2021 was a colourful year for all, and the Primary Debating Department surely wasn’t immune to all the challenges that the pandemic and lockdowns brought. However, with the support of Emina Cufurovic this year, we focused on training debaters from Years 5 to 7.

We had such a high influx of students eager to make the debating teams. Debating is not easy, it requires high level cognitive thinking skills that really hurt the brain! The rewards are massive, the skills gained and developed from debating alone improves crucial skills such as critical thinking, improved public speaking, finding meaning in complex situations, research skills, emotional control, thinking on your feet, resolution of conflict and writing. Basically, it covers it all! During remote learning we were able to train students via Zoom. We organised an adjudicator from the Debater’s Association of Victoria (DAV). They gave our students intensive training sessions to better equip them for the upcoming rounds of debates and public speaking competitions against other schools. All our students’ hard work, diligence and perseverance (and a little bit of duaa too!) paid off! When they faced

off against other prestigious schools, the teams did well and won the following debates. Our Year 7 SEEP debating team participated in the Donvale Region of the DAV’s Junior Secondary Program. Our team presented impressive arguments and we were all so happy for them to end the year on such a high note. Our students won in both rounds and represented the College in a respectful and honourable manner. The following team members represented Al- Taqwa College on the affirmative side: Zuha Sulficar, Zehra Askari, Areesha Khan, Maheen Fatima and Israth Shaik. In other debating news, we had ten students from Years 5 and 6 participate in the DAV Primary Online Public Speaking Competition, Hibah Abdul Bari in 5F progressed to the finals in the DAV Public Speaking Competition amongst six other students from other schools. Our Year 5s debated against Huntingtower and Murrumbeena in the DAV Regional Debating Rounds. Congratulations to the following students, Simrah Jehan 5F, Amel Khalif 5H and Maliha Zahir

5C for winning their debate against St Leonard’s College. In the second round we had two teams win their debate, Khadijah Kabeer 5D, Leyla Mezit 5D and Hibah Abdul Bari 5F. We are all very proud of our public speakers and debaters and wish them all the best in 2022.

The Al-Taqwa College Media Department was keen to start off with a bang in 2021, build on our successes and learn from the challenges posed during the lockdowns. This was an opportunity for students to take charge and create their own media content from home by building their filming and editing skills. This year a new media program was introduced across the following Years 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7. Each year level had a different focus to bring out the best qualities in their on-screen performances. Our Year 6 Media students were treated to an excursion to the brand new ACMI where they participated in their very first ever program, Stop It from the Top. In this activity, the students worked in groups to create a 15 second animation of a human sized model laid out on the floor using stop motion technique. The participants also got to explore the new exhibits and were extra excited that it was their first excursion in two years!

As part of the prize for winning the Focus on Ability Film Festival in 2020, the College ran a six week, Create Your Own Content, virtual course with

filmmaker Robbie Ryde. Selected media students participated through Zoom. In this course, they learned valuable industry secrets and techniques as well as interviewed actors and Director of the famous TV show, Neighbours. In addition to running weekly classes, we also worked alongside the Extra Curricular Department to add a journalism component to the Program for selected year levels. Students were given the knowledge and capability to research topics and ask questions with a journalistic perspective.

External CompetitionsAs in previous years, we submitted video entries in various competitions involving students from each of the year levels. These competitions gave students an extra incentive to put in their best work seen by wider audiences and also to exposed them to the media world outside the College campus. This year, these productions were awarded the following acknowledgements. • Optism - a Tale of Unbreakable Friendship - Focus

on Ability Short Film Festival - Judges Choice School Documentary

• Surviving 2020: Stories of Self-Discovery and Overcoming Challenges, won in Young Minds of Wyndham Film Festival - garnering $300 first prize

The same film was featured in ICV’s digital festival where the students presented live in front of a Zoom panel and also a live audience

• My Family’s Bosnian Heritage and Culture - won the Victorian Multicultural Film Festival in the category of Foundation to Year 3, where a young Selma Kojic spoke about her family’s immigration to Australia.

• Independent Schools Victoria’s Arts Learning Festival - We created a few entries to the video contest with the theme, Recreate Reimagine Renew and two of our video were chosen as finalists

• ATOM finalists - One minute film competition One of the many major highlights this year was the Focus on Ability Short Film Festival major prize netting the College a $7,500 Toshiba package! It was a highly anticipated result and we were so thrilled to have won. We also helped raise awareness about autism to the wider community. The video included three boys in Year 3 and featured their one-of-a-kind friendship and how they help each other get through challenges. During the pandemic affected lockdown in Terms 3 and 4, we challenged the students to create their own content. We tasking them to plan, write, film and even edit their own stories at home with their families help. They featured their personal interests and even some entertaining monologues as well. It was truly amazing to see what the students achieved independently. We also launched the first-ever internal ATC Film Competition with the theme, My Authentic Self, which was open to students in Years 4 through 6. Look out for new talent and exciting media productions in 2022. Obayda Kannouj & Pongky NataatmajaMEDIA DEPARTMENT

Lower PrimaryLower PrimaryI am pleased to report all the news and action from the lower primary department this year. As you are all aware it was yet again a turbulent year. We began the year in full swing but it wasn’t long before we experienced yet another small lockdown. As we continued to return back and forth to school, we were so impressed with how resilient our students were despite the circumstances.

In the lower primary subschool our Foundation, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students have managed to create a year full of learning, enjoyment and memories. Our staff worked so hard during the lockdown to ensure

that learning through Zoom was both educational and enjoyable. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our year level team leaders, all our homeroom teachers, teacher aides, specialist staff and support staff for all they have done to make this department a success in 2021.

As with every year, the Foundation teachers prepare to welcome their students as they transition into Big School. They created a picturesque classroom to inspire and engage their little learners. Our resilient students were prepared to take on any challenges, as they seamlessly transitioned between onsite and remote learning throughout the year.

We celebrated our first term of learning with a very special Teddy Bear Picnic. Students enjoyed their delicious lunch and snacks with their furry friends and classmates. It was so much fun! Sis Semina surprised us on the last day of Term 1 with a visit from her turtle Mala. Mala came around to meet each Foundation student and showed them just how fast a little turtle can run.

In term 2, teachers and students decorated their classroom to get into the spirit of Ramadan. We had beautiful door and window displays to capture the attention of anyone that passed by our classrooms. In addition, as part of our Integrated Studies unit, we planted snow peas and watched them grow throughout the term. We learnt that plants really do need sunlight and water to grow.

Term 3 was off to a great start as we practised the steps of Hajj after Eid al-Adha. It was a wonderful experience mashaAllah! Students then spent most of Term 3 and 4 learning from home and still continued to reach new heights in their learning as they engaged in their daily Zoom sessions. It’s safe to say, our Foundation students are Zoom pros!

Our Foundation stars have made us proud. InshaAllah they will continue to flourish into kind and clever Muslims as they progress through their future years at school.

We started off the year well, settled into our new classes and were ready to start Year 1. We learnt about old and new things in Integrated Studies. We explored some old toys and some new toys and had fun playing with these to develop an appreciation of how toys have evolved over time.

We were learning lots of new things in Literacy and Numeracy and building on our skills from Foundation. We enjoyed our assemblies and listening to the teachers speaking in different accents from countries around the world each week. This was very entertaining for all staff and students.

We enjoyed a super hero picnic organised by the Wellbeing team and the weather was perfect for it. Year 1’s were very excited about the swimming program and fortunate to have a few very enjoyable

days of swimming at Saltwater Swim School before we found ourselves back in remote learning.

The Year 1’s adapted very quickly to life back on Zoom and have become very confident and submitted work on Schoolbox. During our remote learning had our integrated topic was Mini beasts. It was great to see all the dioramas students had created. We presented these in our Zoom sessions. We also had a dress up day on Zoom, which was fun. To add to our mini beast topic we had an incursion through Zoom and were shown lots of different mini beasts. We sure did learn a lot!

Although we had a lot of remote learning, we have had a fun year and learnt a lot, especially in regards to technology. Watch out for our future tech wizzes.

Our lovely students began the school year with wide eyes and open minds. They were ready to tackle the exciting journey of Year 2, and they definitely tried their best to enjoy every step along the way.

The year started with students engaging in the topic of community, exploring different places and their value. They even had the opportunity to dress up in their

traditional clothes to emphasise the importance of community and culture. This helped them form strong friendships and bonds with their fellow classmates.

The year’s Autumn breeze also saw our students being able to design, create and fly their own kites as part of their Design and Technology unit. They enjoyed running around with their kites soaring through the school grounds.

Ramadan and Eid came along and the students celebrated through nasheeds, classroom decorations, dressing up in their Eid clothes and even participating in a gift exchange with their classmates.

Another favourite memory our students will cherish is the Swimming Program at Saltwater Swim School. They were able to learn new swimming and water safety skills and actively play with their friends in the water.

As the year took a turn with the return of remote learning, our amazing students still showed a brave face as they undertook Zoom classes, Schoolbox tasks and even online assessments. However, they still managed to have a spectacular time with class games, a milkshake design project, outdoor picnics, story times, dress ups and class parties.

Although it was an unexpected year, the Year 2 students continued to work hard, achieve their goals and have fun with their friends and teachers along the way. We are extremely proud of everything they have accomplished wish them all the very best in the new journey of Year 3 that lies ahead inshaAllah.

So there we have it. Life in Foundation to Year 2 in 2021.

Once again it was a pleasure to be a part of the journey in the Lower Primary Department. We wish all our students, staff and families a happy and safe holiday break and are already pumped up for what 2022 has to offer. InshaAllah it will be another great year for us all.

Year 2Year 2

What a challenging year 2021 brought! Transition between face to face and remote learning brought the new era of teaching and learning for us all. It was one of the most challenging years in most unprecedented circumstances that any of us will ever experience. Despite this, we tackled each challenge with positivity and determination to seek a way through. Well done to you, parents for supporting their children and for your encouragement to the school at every stage.

Of course, we should not forget the tremendous amount of learning which took place during the year. Throughout all of these activities our students demonstrated great character! Although the year has come to an end, there is so much to learn from and inshaAllah we look forward for 2022. May Allah (swt) bring all mercy and goodness for everyone.

Congratulations to all our Year 5 graduates, we wish them all the best in their future endeavours and also to remind them to continue to imbed Islamic values as they progress to another level in their learning journey.

I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our staff from Year 3 to 5 and all the specialists teachers who taught those year levels. As it was an extraordinary year in education, I would also thank them for their hard work, dedication in caring for

our children and expertise that make our school such a wonderful and supportive learning community.

InshaAllah, we look forward to a better year, dedicating to improve our students’ performance, encouraging deeper learning and engagement with our teachers as a learning community and working closely with parents and other stake holders.

Middle School Y6-9Middle School Y6-9Assalamu alaikum dear parents and guardiansAl-Taqwa College is proud of our students and staff. The College has stood strong and united through the testing times of COVID-19 with continuous lockdowns. Preparation for remote learning and the support for such systems of learning were of significant priority for Al-Taqwa College over the last two years. Remote learning was challenging for most students and staff when it was first introduced, but very soon Schoolbox became a household name for all. The introduction of Schoolbox as our education platform, enabled clear communication of our curriculum to students. The continual change and switch from remote to face-to-face did not phase our staff and students this year, as staff worked hard to ensure their students were explicitly taught through the use of zoom and planning of lessons on class pages.

Our programs and events continued throughout 2021, as such platforms made it all possible. The dedication of staff, many teaching their own classes while supporting their own children in their learning at home. Such challenges only helped develop a resilience and strength in our practices. Without your support as a community, Al Taqwa College would not be where it is today. We value that support and ensure

to continually develop and teach in a progressive model.

As the year ends, we look ahead at what the future holds for our dear students. It is important to reflect on what was, what we achieved, what we created during our most testing times. InshaAllah there is ease in 2022 for all and the new year brings upon innovation and action. A large project we look forward to seeing completed is our gymnasium complex at the back of the College. This facility will be most welcomed by all College staff members and students as well as the College community. The vision of growth and expansion is continuing at Al-Taqwa, with renovations and improvements in many areas of the College including facilities, resources, classrooms and offices. All possible with your dedicated support and prayers. We are looking forward to a healthy, happy and prosperous 2022 in your child’s education and life. May Allah (SWT) protect them as they are our future inshaAllah.

This year was another extremely difficult and testing year for us all. Once again it caused much stress and anxiety among our community and also the education system in Victoria. Our College was again directly affected by the pandemic resulting in closures for extended periods. In saying that, we are so proud of our students and the manner in which they conducted themselves, persevering and working hard during these challenging times. Al-Taqwa College provided a stable and strong learning platform, despite the uncertainty surrounding us.

Despite the circumstances and resorting to remote learning, we thrived as a College in these difficult times. We are so proud that our students not only completed the year but maintained a high level of engagement in their learning. During remote learning, it was amazing to see students in full school uniform during live sessions, attending sessions on time, maintaining a high level of attendance, submitting work on time, maintaining acceptable behaviour and thriving and achieving in their outcomes, including a great improvement in NAPLAN results.

Students were able to adapt to eLearning and achieve their best possible results. The Year 6-9 students are all now fully equipped with their own school laptop. The Years 6 cohort has been doing extremely well since joining Secondary School in the new Middle School structure. We also thank the many dedicated teachers and parents who encouraged students to persevere and keep on track. Al-Taqwa College has put a

strong emphasis on supporting students. The Homework Club and Reach for the Stars Program continued this year. When in lockdown, we were also able to run them via Zoom which was beneficial and helpful to students. These Programs will continue in 2022 as the College is always working to improve and innovate its programs.

As mentioned many times, student acknowledgement and encouragement is very important. It is so important that we reward positive and exemplary behaviours. The College has continued to invest in student campaigns and incentives. We were lucky enough to be able to run these Campaigns during remote learning. Below are some photos of the incentives given to students throughout the year.

On a last note, we are extremely proud of all our students in Years 6-9 and the way they approached the year. Students have shown great resilience and character once again. This year was a team effort and in saying that we would like to thank students, parents, teachers, staff and key community members for their effort. We look forward to seeing everyone next year, rejuvenated and ready.

Alhamdulillah Alhamdulillah All Praise is to Allah for another successful academic year.

Dream, Believe Do, was the slogan for our Year 6s in 2021.

Transition into secondary education at Al-Taqwa College commences in Year 6 due to the new Middle School. ATCs Year 6 class of 2021 integrated with ease to be a part of the secondary school structure. Alhamdulillah! It gives a great sense of privilege and pleasure to be the Year Level Coordinator at ATC’s biggest secondary sub-school comprising of 205 students.

The whole cohort adapted to all the new routines, processes, changes in curriculum and also not having the same homeroom teacher teaching many subjects. All this could not have been possible without the team effort of all students and their parents. May Allah bless you all for your efforts.

A BIG THANK YOU to our fantastic team of Year 6 teachers for their exceptional effort in preparing our Year 6 students to embark on their journey into secondary school.

The academic year was yet another unprecedented year for our wider College community due to COVID-19. Upheavals from the pandemic was challenged with resilience, continuous dedication, collaboration and care for one another, by the whole College community. We juggled between on-site learning and remote learning. Amidst this juggle our students had the opportunity to continue to participate in many activities, alhamdulillah!

Here’s what our two SRCs thought about this year!Year 6 started off with a blast,

But we know forever this year cannot last. The time has finally comeWhen we can look back and reflect on who we have become. And so I would like to say, on behalf of the Year 6 cohort,That although this year has indeed been short,Our teachers have taught us a lot,And forgotten they will be not.Thank you to my friends and peers,Whom I wish will stay with me for many years. As we move on to another chapter of our lives,In these final days of our year, let us revive,The memories of us all as one,Blossoming in the end as those who have won.Thank you for this amazing opportunity,And for giving me a chance to be part of such a wonderful community.Goodbye 2021,A new chapter of our lives has now almost begun.Thank youQatadah Ummu, SRC Year 6

Our transition from Year 5 to Year 6 was like none other. The school had moved Year 6 from primary to secondary. It also meant that we were going to get laptops a year earlier! Everyone was very excited. Laptops and lockers and more exciting activities awaited us. But a lot had changed because of Covid - 19. Most of the year we were stuck in our homes doing zoom classes.

On the days we had face to face learning, we were able to do fun activities. Like sock day, when we had to wear different types of socks and bring a golden coin as donation. We took pictures of our socks and got to see what others wore. Another activity was the Alice in Wonderland show. The students who were in the drama and media club made that. Some were actors and some were designers. We also had the Ramadan decoration competition where the class with the best Ramadan décor won, which was 6F. The school gave out canteen vouchers to year 6 students if they won a class campaign or some competitions.

Even though the rest of the year we had to do online learning, we still got to do tons of things, like the Eco link online incursion. We did a zoom meeting and learnt about the animal adaptions all over Australia.

An activity the school offered us SRCs was that we give parents tours of the whole school. It was very fun and the students who attended to give the tour got café vouchers.

This year was the last graduation for Year 6 because in the future years, students will graduate in Year 5. Overall, this year was pretty amazing if I do say so. Sure, there was ups and downs but we were strong and will continue to be strong in the future. Good luck to the next Year 6 students! Aleena Erum, Year 6 SRC

Rayan Masri 6EDespite being in and out of lockdown, you all continued to amaze me with your optimism, determination to learn and resilience to adapt. You are awesome!

Asra Tanveer 6F2021, a year no less than a rollercoaster ride for our students! 6F is full of happiness and grace. We have faced uncertain situations due to lockdowns with bravery and courage. The challenges presented by the constant lockdowns made us all stronger, wiser and more resilient. Allah (swt) tells us in a very insightful ayah: “After a difficulty, Allah will soon grant relief” (Quran. 65:7) Despite intermittent remote learning, we managed to organise some fun events like the Crazy Sock Day and 6F was super excited about this event. Here’s wishing all my beautiful students, good luck for 2022! Inshallah!

Raj Chohan 6G2021 was a challenging year which really sped by. During certain months, the students missed fun times together face-to-face as a class but it made them resilient and work extra harder with their lessons during Zoom. I am very proud of the students and how well they have all matured and grown as Al-Taqwa pupils.

Sumeyye Ipar 6H2021 has been tough as we have experienced quite a few snap lockdowns. But 6H! You have handled the emotional roller coaster of Coronavirus stress very well and acted like a pro. It was lot of fun having Homeroom and English with you this year. You always have really great things to say! Hope you have a fantastic summer.

Hasan Elbanna 6ITo all the wonderful, energetic, talkative boys of 6I who love playing computer games and chatting away on the social stream more than anything else, it was a pleasure being your homeroom teacher!

Lindita Dharda SWB CoordinatorWhat a roller-coaster 2021 was! Just as we thought we battled through out 2020 pandemic; we were once again back to remote-learning. We know these times were challenging for many parents. The success we have seen and the resilience from our students wouldn’t have been possible without your support, dedication, commitment and understanding towards REMOTE LEARNING. The SWB coordinators spent most the time calling and supporting our students to get though the mental struggles that the pandemic had put on everyone. I would like to say a big Thank you to all of the students and their families for their ongoing commitment for getting through no matter what challenges you faced. You are all SUPERSTARS!!!

Year 7Year 7This was a year to remember. It was an exciting, challenging and productive year for our Year 7s. The students made a smooth transition from Year 6 to Year 7. The year was challenging as the students dealt with new timetables, different teachers and of course how could we forget COVID-19.

The Year 7 students were involved in a variety of online campaigns and activities. Throughout the year, they were involved a number of campaigns where they needed to show their best behaviour, a Ramadan Campaign where they decorated their classrooms, Schoolbox Campaign where students are selected on how well they worked and a Praying on Time Campaign. Students were also involved with PAT testing in Term 1 and ICAS Testing in Term 4, Australian Mathematics Competition and SWB activities.

The end of the year was a time we farewelled our Year 7 students to progress into Year 8. It was also a time when we recognised their efforts over the year and wished them every success in their up and coming secondary years. I trust with the experiences our Year 7s had this year, they will apply themselves in their future studies, be able to reach their full potential and become active members of the community. I would also like to thank all the teachers and Student Wellbeing Team for their hard work and support in making 2021 a successful year.

I wish the College community a happy and safe break. I look forward to seeing you all next year in 2022, inshaAllah under better circumstances.

It was my pleasure to work with the Year 8 cohort of 2021 as their Coordinator. The students eased into the school year smoothly and very quickly established themselves as a cooperative and keen group of students.

This year, with many restrictions in place due to Covid-19, students were not able to experience the major events that normally take place and we acknowledge that the 2020-21 school years were challenging for everyone. However, we are proud of our teachers, students and parents who showed resilience in managing the difficulties and confusion which Covid-19 brought about, with faith that ‘with every difficulty, there is a relief’, (Quran 94:5-6). Students worked hard and continued to perform to the best of their abilities during remote learning; they further developed their communication and information technology skills as well as their time management skills.

Throughout the year, students were involved in various activities. Some of these included school campaigns such as beautifying their homerooms, focusing on their uniforms and encouraging positive behaviour. Students also participated in the Elevate Study Skills Workshop to help improve their mindset and study habits, they took part in multiple Education Perfect Championships across different learning areas. Our SEEP Maths students participated in the Bebras 2021 Challenge and received awards for their outstanding performance!

In Ramadan, our Year 8 students were involved in regular activities throughout the days which were organised by the AIQ Department. Students decorated their classrooms to celebrate the holy month of Ramadan. They participated in the Annual Quran Competition, and their performance was excellent mashaAllah, may Allah bless them and those who supported them immensely.

Students were praised and awarded for their positive behaviour and academic achievements using the merit system and given awards during assemblies. It gave students a sense of pride and motivation to continue doing well.

During remote learning, students participated in well being sessions and activities organised by the SWB junior team with Ali Nuredini, Hanan Koubar and Mohammad Abdulle who spent many hours supporting our students with arising issues.

Various students were supported with Individual Learning Plans and were supported by teachers in the subjects of mathematics and English during onsite and remote learning. Support staff worked collaboratively with classroom teachers and with struggling students in small groups or one-to-one to cater for their learning needs and to tackle gaps in their learning. The aim was to improve students’ outcome and to provide students with best support possible to help them reach their full potential. The After School Homework Club and the Reach for the Stars Program provided students with extra support to help them improve in various subjects and to improve overall performance.

The year ended with an Excellence Award Ceremony to award outstanding performance throughout the year.

Finally, I would like to thank all our teachers, parents and students for all the hard work they put in this year to ensure our students learning was not deeply affected by the pandemic. I hope that everyone enjoys a peaceful, safe and happy summer break!

Here … begins the journey of the Year 9 students! It felt like we woke up from a dream ... remote learning and Zoom seemed a thing of the past…

We started Term 1 strong, filled with energy of a new year and a gradual adjustment to being back at school. Students were introduced to the Year 9 Program through the induction assembly. Students were very curious about the VCE Accelerated Program where selected students were offered a VCE subject in year 10. They were also introduced to the Year 10 structure Pre VCE Model.

Excursions and incursions were not much of the plan this year as the College took precautions and were very cautious of the unprecedented challenges. But guess what? This did not stop the Al-Taqwa staff and leaders from organising events. Students were offered multiple opportunities to showcase their talents and have fun!

The expedition began with an Elevate Study Skills Workshop where students were given a chance to work with university students to understand the importance of time management to achieve success in their studies. Students enjoyed the session and gave a great feedback.

Then came the PAT testing which was conducted online. This ran very smoothly since the students had attained great expertise, doing assessments online due to the challenges faced last year.

The Year 9 Debating Team participated in DAV’s interschool debating and showed persistent effort, leadership and teamwork as they presented their stance on a range of challenging and thought-provoking topics. The team comprised of: Samah Qaisy, Manal Mubiene, Safiya Mubiene, Nour Abu Hasna and Masfa Khan. The girls won three out of their five debates, with Samah Qaisy and Manal Mubiene being awarded the best speakers. We congratulate these students together with their teachers Lorraine Paul and Farween Munaff. Several Campaigns were organised over the course of the year including the Uniform, Homeroom Cleanliness, Ramadan and Best Behaviour, just to name a few. The winners were awarded with canteen vouchers. This was really competitive and was a mammoth task to identify the winners. Congratulations to all Year 9 students and the homeroom teachers for their effort.

The World Down Syndrome Day was recognised on the 22 March, where students were allowed to wear groovy socks and donate a gold coin to the cause. We thank our students for their generosity.

Homework Club and Reach for the Stars Program gave students extra support in their studies. This was scheduled after school on Thursdays.

Each term was accomplished by recognising the achievements of student academic progress during Award Assemblies. Teachers identified top achievers and most improved from each class and nominated students for the awards. Congratulations to all the recipients!

NAPLAN arrived and students prepared well in advance with their teachers and HLAs. We were really proud to see the great results from the Year 9 cohort!

event. Hamza Abshir finished off in third place, Mazin Bakri fourth and Abubakarr Bah ninth. Thanks to teacher, Mohammad Othman and the team for giving our boys the opportunity to make a difference!

As we embarked on our journey towards the mid of Term 2 … we all know what happened!

Zoom, Schoolbox, online timetables, and rsvp … were the words rushing back to the students minds. Remote learning opened up different opportunities for students to participate and engage themselves in fun activities. The journey continued ... remotely!

Students finished off their exams via Education Perfect. Thanks to Sis Nuzrath, the eLearning Team and IT Support for all the assistance they provided our staff and students during the lockdown.

The Art Department’s Drama Club, ran the Alice in Wonderland play – an event that was very well planned and executed! Congratulations to our Year 9 participants for their amazing effort! Zehra Glamocic, Samah Qaisy and Abubakarr Bah for their outstanding performances! Well done to Sis Behije and the team for the eye catching exhibition!

The SWB Coordinators together with the College Counsellors organised a few lunchtime and after school sessions with the students on Zoom to discuss their mental health and wellbeing. Thanks to Ali Nuredini and Hanan Koubar for their ongoing support.

Here we go again with another spectacular online event organised by the AIQ Department, the Annual Quran Competition. What a wonderful opportunity given to our very talented

boys, Ali Nasir and Zarif Khan to participate in such an event judged by the external Shaikhs! Congratulations and thanks to Sis Wafa and her team for such a glorious event!

The SEEP Science students were given the privilege to participate in, Explaining the Brain Competition to explore various brain myths. They created a short video/infographic to educate the public. Students attended ANSTO’s, In their Element Program, through Zoom. They participated in a Q&A session with an ANSTO graduate engineer. They also joined the Victorian Young Leaders Global Youth Forum in Term 4 where they participated in a live conference, connected with international students from China, Indonesia, Japan and Vietnam. Thanks Jia Chew for organising such memorable events for the SEEP students.

What a finish to an amazing yet challenging year! We would like to thank all our teachers, HLAs, leaders, parents and the whole ATC community for their contribution this year. My sincere gratitude to our Middle School Heads, Behije Cura and Stefanos Chrisoulis for their ongoing support to make 2021 a successful year!

Congratulations to our magnificent group of Year 9’s on the hard work they displayed throughout the year. We appreciate your resilience, perseverance and true grit working both at school and home. You are building the foundations for your senior school journey that will carry you into 2022 and beyond.

Wishing you all a safe and relaxing holiday!

Senior School Y10-12Senior School Y10-12The 2021 school year in many ways mirrors that of 2020, again the College was forced to deal with many challenges which no doubt impacted on students, staff and parents in numerous ways.

What we have learned during these challenging times is the need to be resourceful, compassionate and innovative so as to try and support the needs of the school community. These measures were pivotal in us aiming to provide an educational setting that resembled some form of normality. The experiences of 2020 provided us with the experiences, tools and resilience required to provide a learning environment which whilst not ideal, had at least ensured that continuous tuition was delivered.

I wish to thank all students, staff and parents associated with the senior school for their support and commitment in embracing the numerous strategies implemented so as to achieve these objectives. Within the senior school an enormous amount of work had been undertaken in implementing a variety of programs and strategies so as to give each students the opportunity to achieve the best possible learning outcomes.

One of the greatest challenges was how to best deliver lessons to students whilst at home due to the pandemic. All school communities dealt with this unique challenge, and our students and teachers, I am pleased to report, embraced the remote learning environment throughout the course of the year. Students were able to progress their studies using technology, with Zoom sessions paramount in allowing students to have ongoing interaction with their teachers and peers.

In spite of the interruptions the College had to deal with in 2021, a great number of objectives were achieved. They were achieved through a process of listening to the expectations of students, parents, staff and the community. These expectations will continue to be implemented into the College culture and ethos in 2022 and beyond. Some of the achievements are as follows:

The further development of initiatives such as Homework Club, Year 12 Study Skills Program, 40+ Club, Accelerated VCE Program and employment of

additional teachers to support students in the core areas of English and Maths are just a few examples of the resources the College has committed to achieving.

The notion of senior students acting as role models for the rest of the College, and being proud of themselves and the College has also been another major emphasis the year. The manner in which students complied with the uniform requirements is one example of the positive cultures we are creating at Al-Taqwa. The simple act of coming to school in full school uniform without much reinforcement from our end demonstrated that students are respectful of their College, and arrive daily with a positive learning attitude. I wish to thank students and parents for supporting the College in this very important area.

Throughout the year, the College mandated that all students in the senior school have a College approved laptop as part of their class equipment. Teachers are developing fantastic learning tasks which are designed to support students in achieving the required learning outcomes. This combined with the College’s online learning management system, Schoolbox, has ensured that Al-Taqwa College is at the forefront of embracing technology for the delivery of teaching and learning in the 21st century. With the disruptions to schools over recent times due to the global health crisis, this online platform has never been so important. We ask parents to continue to support their children and the College in embracing this extremely important initiative.

We have fantastic staff who are very dedicated professionals, and are constantly going beyond so as to support students and parents. This is something we should be thankful for, and inspires me in overseeing this area of the College. Finally I look forward to continuing to work with the College community in the senior school next year in achieving the educational outcomes for each and every student.

While this year was one where remote teaching and learning was once again thrust upon us – it was also a year of creativity, exploration, new learning and success across the Year 10 group. The year began - as it always does – with bright eyes and eagerness as after all, they were in their first year of senior school!

As is the case with every incoming cohort, Year 10 is a critical year for the students as they begin to make choices that will shape the remaining years of senior secondary education. Throughout the year, students received one-on-one counselling sessions to assist them in understanding the opportunities that await them post secondary school. For some, these decisions are full of anxiety as the future can sometimes seem so far away. We provide opportunities to attend and listen to experts in various fields.

Being a popular career destination among the student cohort, students learned about how to enter the medical profession by a practising doctor and learned about the everyday role and expectations that come with that. Moreover, they were involved in Zoom sessions with the National Institute of Education

and MedEntry who discussed pathways and requirements to successfully attain a medical place. These are always exciting programs that students look forward to and learn a lot about.

Despite the challenges that 2021 presented, there were so many Year 10 students that flourished under such trying circumstances. As a Year 10 team we worked hard to assist students to approach their remote learning in balance way through workshops on stress, anxiety, time management and study skills.

With the objective to offer students more choice and agency in their subjects and senior school studies, students entering the Year 10 program began to make choices about the subjects they undertook. We look forward to students striving on the path of excellence and pursuing their passions.

Thank you to all who have made the year that was, one to remember and we look forward to more success in 2022!

Bismillah Hir Rahman Nir Rahim. Assalamu alaikum as the school year draws to a close, it is time to reflect on our students’ achievements and hard work. Our VCAL students started off the year by working towards their very own garden project. The garden project involved students in designing and creating a small vegetable and herb garden located at our Senior school campus. Although, this project had to be put on pause due to the disruptions of the covid-19 pandemic, we cannot wait for our VCAL students to continue with this project in 2022. Stay tuned for this space! Despite the challenges of this year, all Year 11 students have shown how adaptable and resilient they are by continuing with their studies throughout remote learning. The struggle of attending those early zoom classes has assisted our students to develop new study habits which will prepare them for their final year of schooling. Further to educational achievements, students were able to enhance their social skills and collectively as a covert, design the year 12 jacket design for 2022. That’s a massive task to do without being able to physically see their peers! Well done! I am incredibly proud of the way our students have worked tirelessly over the year. May Allah (SWT)

continue to give them the strength and guidance to achieve their full potential. Finally, I would like to congratulate all our students on finishing this year successfully and wish them all the best for 2022. Stay strong, stay safe and stay positive!

Another extremely difficult and testing year for us all, causing much stress and anxiety among our College and community. Our College was again directly affected by the pandemic resulting in closures for extended periods. It was especially difficult for VCAL students, where structured workplace learning ceased for an extended period. VET classes were online for the good part of an entire semester, which made it extremely difficult for students to complete units comprehensively. At the end of it all, we got through it again. A huge testament to the strength of our students and community.

Tough times don’t last, but strong people do As the year was interrupted with a number of lockdowns and schools having to resort to online learning, this made it extremely difficult. In saying this, there were a number of projects that took place while still at school.

This year was a truly unique year for VCAL! It was announced that VCAL would form into a vocational stream within VCE commencing in 2023. This is great news! VCAL subjects will and can be delivered within the VCE structure, meaning that students undertaking vocational studies will qualify with a VCE certificate. The stream is still under construction and more will be released in 2022. In the meantime please view our latest VCAL video, found on the school website and on Schoolbox.

VE TVocational Education and Training (VET) in Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) allows students to include vocational studies within their senior secondary certificate. Students undertake nationally recognised training that contributes to their VCAL. Students enjoy VET because it offers opportunities to combine general and vocational studies, explore career options and pathways, undertake learning in the workplace as well as gain a nationally recognised qualification or credit towards a qualification that contributes to VCAL and to develop skills that equip

them for the workforce and further study. VET contributes to VCAL through satisfying the requirements of the work related skills strand where each completed 90 hour block of VET equals one VCAL unit. This year, as difficult as VET has been due to constant Covid lockdowns, our students persevered and achieved their Certificates through eLearning. Well done to our current VCAL cohort.

VCAL Careers ExpoThe Year 11 & 12 VCAL students organised a Careers Exhibition for their work related skills subject. As part of their VCAL Program students are enrolled in industry specific VET courses which they attend every Wednesday. In semester 1, the students worked on exploring salary ranges, career opportunities and industry trends in their chosen careers. The

students set up and organised this Exhibition where each student was an industry representative for their chosen career. The Exhibition was open to Year 10 students and provided them an opportunity to gain further information about the VCAL Program and the pathways available to them through studying VCAL. The Exhibition was a great success and allowed the students to have informative discussions with their peers regarding their future pathways.

Assalamu alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh 2021 was another testing year for the whole world. We can only say alhamdulillah for everything.

As our Iman guides us through times of hardships, we rest assured that whatever comes from Allah is always khair. Our beloved Prophet (PBUH) said: “Strange are the ways of a believer for there is good in every affair of his and this is not the case with anyone else except in the case of a believer for if he has an occasion to feel delight, he thanks (Allah), thus there is a good for him in it, and if he gets into trouble and shows resignation (and endures it patiently), there is a good for him in it”.

Allah (SWT) has promised each and every one of us that we will face difficulties and hardship in life, whether it be with the loss of a loved one, poverty or fear of something: “And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.)” [Surat Al-Baqarah 2:155].

The real test for us was how we delt with these trials. As Allah (SWT) said in the above ayah, glad tidings are for the ones that are patient with the trials that He tests us with.

We continued to use Schoolbox as our platform for teaching and learning and Education Perfect as the assessment platform.

The AIQ Department, continued supporting students spiritually. The Ramadan Schoolbox page posted activities, Ramadan Daily Quiz, a Daily Calendar with du’as, hadeeths and inspirational quotes, Islamic videos and talks.

The AIQ Separtment conducted an AIQ Challenge on Education Perfect for the Middle School students, celebrating AIQ Week, from 3-7 May.

All Year 6-9 students were invited to participate and compete with their friends and rivals in gaining Islamic knowledge via interactive Quiz based on Islamic concepts.

The number of participating students in the Qur’an Hifz Program increased this year Alhamdulillah and classes continued operating even during the school holidays and lockdowns.

The 19th Annual Quran Competition was held on 28 October. We had three external judges; Sheikh Dr Ali Sultan Jalabneh (Jordan), Sheikh Dr Hayssam Rifai (Imam of Newport Masjid) and Ustath Ibrahim Abu Khalil. Our students made us proud again. They recited the words of Allah in their beautiful voices with passion, enthusiasm and confidence. The judges were very impressed.

We had six levels for Hifz (L1 Juz’ 29&30, L2 Juz’ 1, L3 Juz’ 1-4, L4 Juz’ 1-7, L5 Juz’ 1-9 & L6 Juz’ 1-14), Maqamat, Khutbah and Athan.

Art has many forms. During the year, learning through The Arts at Al-Taqwa has taken on new facades. Students and teachers continued to navigate through new ways of learning, with the intention of inspiring each other to enjoy what The Arts have to offer!

As you know, Al-Taqwa provides secondary students the opportunity to engage in the four Art curriculum learning areas: Visual Communication and Design, Visual Arts, Drama, and Media. The strengthening of our Elite Drama Program also allowed students who are passionate about live theatre to be performance pioneers at our College!

Let’s look more in depth at what our secondary school art students have been up to in 2021.

We welcomed Year 6s onto the Secondary Campus at the beginning of the year with Visual Arts and a specially curated semester of Drama/Media. Students developed their independence and creativity in both these learning areas. We saw high levels of engagement, lots of skill using digital technologies, and growing confidence to share ideas with their new teachers and class mates.

Across Years 7-9, students participated in the Visual Arts, Media, VCD and Drama curriculum. As always, our students displayed perseverance in moving from

on-campus to remote learning, as well as becoming resourceful with materials and techniques, using those found around the family home to create their masterpieces, and at times, having to be flexible with their chosen mediums.

Year 10s were given the choice to enrol in a Pre-VCE Art subject as they started to make important decisions for their future studies in VCE and beyond. This semester-based subject was created using the Media, Visual Arts, and Visual and Communication and Design curriculum, providing students with a wide understanding of the key knowledge and skills needed in these select industries. Small classes allowed for

students to develop their skills in 3D scale model-making (environmental design), lino printing (visual arts), creating video manifestos (communication design and critical literacy), all taking place in our Senior Art Studio.

In August we were able to finalise and film the much-anticipated performance of Al-Taqwa’s version of Alice in Wonderland. What a success! The students who voluntarily participated in the Elite Drama Program worked tirelessly in after school rehearsals over the past year to learn their lines, create props and costumes, and work together to refine the first of many more performances to come! We take this opportunity to thank all parents, families, students, and the wider community for their time and enthusiasm in order to make this an unforgettable experience! Add to this our ARTS@ATC EXPO: 2021 launched in November, which collated masterpieces from all primary and secondary Art Learning areas! You can still access our 2021 Art Exhibition by following this link.

Our senior Studio Arts and VCD students had to reach above and beyond to successfully complete their respective VCE learning. Students created explorations and design briefs of personal interest, and then developed their initial ideas into completed artworks and digital designs. We wish those students moving into further study in 2022, all the very best! We hope that the perseverance, technical abilities, problem solving skills, and collaboration learnt through The Arts at Al-Taqwa, help them both academically and personally as they move into the next phase of their lives.

As we finish 2021, we look ahead by reflecting on what The Art Department can do for our students in the new year. We will continue to work with a range of manual and digital mediums in our classrooms. We will provide lunchtime workshops for students, as well as the possibility to participate in the 2022 Elite Drama Club (We have a new performance in the stands...shhh! Don’t tell anyone yet!) Students in senior levels will have the choice of two Pre-VCE Arts curriculum: Studio Arts/VCD and/or Drama/Media, with the intention of providing a VCE Drama curriculum in the coming years. We will continue to provide incursions and excursions for secondary students, if circumstances allow. And, as is now a tradition at ATC, we will bring you a new Art Exhibition as we wind down the academic year in 2022.

On behalf of the ATC Art Department, we hope you are ready for the next creative ride! See you on the other side, with cameras/paint brushes/pencils/costumes, in hand!SECONDARY ART DEPARTMENT

Alice in WonderlandBack in August of 2020, at the height of Melbourne’s Covid lockdown, we began working on our performance of Alice in Wonderland. Over Zoom, and in person where possible, we worked in teams; acting, props development, costuming, advertising and set design, in order to create the wonderful world of Wonderland.

Alice in Wonderland speaks to many people given that the majority of us felt like we were falling down a rabbit hole: that feeling that nothing we were doing was making sense, and we would not be able to find our way back home. This feeling has continued as we make our way to the end of 2021…

However, the amazing achievement of the Elite Drama students at Al-Taqwa, shows that we can flourish in all circumstances, with hard work, dedication, and collaboration!

We would like to thank the staff and students who contributed many hours of work, rehearsals and meetings, and without whom, none of this would have been possible.

Isabelle FrazerDRAMA TEACHER, DIRECTOR OF PERFORMANCE, ALICE IN WONDERLAND

Excerpt from Salma Hassan, 8D, aka “The Queen of Hearts”Alice In Wonderland has been one of the highlights of the year, no argument. No doubt, there were some days where we’d all gather after school and be too exhausted to do anything. On other days, we’d be super excited and just couldn’t wait to jump down the rabbit hole! It took up valuable lunchtimes and time afterschool until we finally got it right, and it was worth it. And to top it all off, we had amazing props and costumes that made us feel like we were filming a Disney movie.

This experience for me in such an unprecedented time gives me hope. Hope that we can continue going on with these extra-curricular events, even if we weren’t allowed to perform to anyone, we still managed to be able to stream it from the comfort of our homes and host a performance the school has never seen before! I can’t wait to see what performances drama club has in store for more years to come, InshAllah!

I’d just like to thank everyone who helped make this masterpiece which will forever be known as the first Drama production at Al-Taqwa!

Careers DepartmentCareers DepartmentThe last two years have been spent in confusion, uncertainty and endless challenges. Yet, Al-Taqwa students have shown great perseverance and resilience in the face of all the difficulties they encountered. Despite going through virtual learning, the Careers Department continued to deliver education to help students make informed career decisions and equip them for the world of work.

Throughout the year various professionals, and Universities delivered workshops and seminars virtually, to help motivate, guide and inform our students. Year 9 students had a virtual subject selection and pathway session, to help their transition into year 10. Our enthusiastic year 10 students attended career planning and mapping sessions with our advisors, to help them discover and plan their VCE/VCAL subjects.

Year 11 and 12 students were invited to attend sessions delivered by various institutions like, Victoria University, Melbourne University and RMIT. Our year 12 students attended one on one career sessions with their respective advisors, that helped them plan their

studies after high school. The Careers Department will offer students from year 9 onwards a positive, student centred and well-informed program, that will guide them to successful careers.

Students will be interviewed regularly, given opportunities to connect with meaningful work, and will be given a chance to network with successful professionals from their community.

We will be renowned for delivering a high-quality careers education to all students, and will strive to understand and offer individual careers plans for individual needs.

Careers education must connect today’s learning with future jobs, that are perhaps not even created yet. We will empower and equip our students to seize the opportunities of a fast shifting, globalised world, and be ready to work in Victoria’s growing and high-demand workplaces.

We will strive to educate and inspire our students to become the best version of themselves, by understanding their skills and attributes and applying this knowledge to their career plans.

On Tuesday 13 July, the Year 5-6 boys participated in the Bachar Houli Cup. Al-Taqwa began by playing against Darul Ulum, an encounter which resulted in a one-sided affair in our favour with a final score of 65-1. The outstanding players were Maysaam El Haouli and Ayman Gammachu both kicking three goals each. Jad El Haouli and Noah ElHaouli dominated the midfield and were creating goals. Against Minaret College, our second game, our boys had full control of the game. Al-Taqwa won by a whopping 59 points with Zayan El Kurdi controlling the backline. Our third game was against Ilim College, Al-Taqwa again dictating the scoreboard 75-7. Slieman El Hawli kicked four goals and Maysam El Haouli kicked two goals in this game. In our last game was against Sirius College, the team put on a master class performance, dominating the scoreboard 101-0, led by Jad El Haouli, who

kicked six goals and Zayan El Kurdi who kicked three goals. In the end, Al-Taqwa finished first in their pool group and advanced to the grand final, which was played in August against AIA College. Best players for the tournament were Jad El Haouli, Noah ElHaouli, Ayman Gammachu and Zayan El Kurdi.

On Tuesday 3 August, our Year 12 boys participated in the Bachar Houli Cup against three other Muslim schools in the group stage to qualify for the grand final. Exactly four years ago from this day, the current Year 12s had also competed when they were in Year 8,

What’s amazing is that they have qualified once again, only this time, they got to play the grand final. Our team defeated and dominated both games against Minaret and Ilim College, where the scores finished with big margins (30+ points). The boys then played a tough yet exciting game against AIA in our final match and came out victorious by three points.

In the first half of the game, AIA was playing really well, and leading at half time of 13 points. Our boys came into the game in the second half with fire in their eyes, dominating possession, tackling, working hard, and most importantly, converting the goals needed to solidify the victory. It was hard to pick the best player on the day, as everyone performed excellently.

Our midfielders Abdallah El-Abdallah and his younger brother Omar of Year 10, excelled in their hard work. They also pitched in the backline and help to drive the ball forward.

Our backline and forwards were very well composed and showed great determination to excel, both creating options and trapping the ball in our forward half.

The amazing leadership of Mohamed Melham needs to be mentioned, as he led the way with his performance as both a ruckman and midfielder. He was very vocal with his encouragement to his team mates and helped motivate them.

Vice Captain Lukman Haddara kicked more than 15 goals from the midfield. Both Melhem and Lukman set a standard for the rest of the boys to follow.

On 27 May, our students from Years 6 to 9 attended the Wyndham Division Cross Country event.

The first race was the 12/13 year-old runners. Four of our male runners in this category managed to progress to the next stage, in the Western Metropolitan Region Cross Country at Brimbank. Zain Imran 6E finished in third place, Faisal Hersi 7E finished sixth, Masab Margan 7H finished eighth and Abdirahman Jama 8H finished ninth. The second race was the 14 year-old category. The high standard set by the previous runners gave these boys the spark to go one better. Adam Abdallah 8G, finished second and Afiq Ahmed 8H, finished fourth to qualify in the next round. In our last race, the 15 year-old category, Hamza Abshir 9F finished third, Mazin Bakir 9G, finished fourth and Abubakar Bah 9E finished ninth. Our girls who also participated in the cross country, did not progress to the next round despite giving their best. All the students who participated showed grit and determination as well ask making Al-Taqwa College proud.
