Messages

Among the many artistic achievements of our 2018/19 season, I am proud to include our first ever company tour to Moscow and St. Petersburg with three exciting ballets from our recent repertoire. In Toronto, we presented the North American premiere of John Neumeier’s powerful ballet, Anna Karenina, and celebrated Xiao Nan Yu in her chosen role of Hannah from The Merry Widow as she brought her extraordinary career on stage to a triumphant close.” Karen Kain, Artistic Director

“ The 2018/19 season has been a continuation of everything The National Ballet of Canada has come to stand for in recent years – innovation, ambition, excellence and community. We also saw the successful close of our Soaring Campaign, the largest in the company’s history and one that united our donor community in pursuit of artistic growth.” Cornell Wright, Board Chair

The National Ballet of Canada continued to make significant gains in 2018/19 within a climate of steady leadership and fiscal balance. With the support of an engaged donor community, we were able to tour overseas, collaborate on new work, host an international competition and offer a variety of engagement programmes to our diverse audiences nationwide.” Barry Hughson, Executive Director

Soaring: The Campaign for The National Ballet of Canada closed at the end of the 2018/19 season, not only realizing its potential but exceeding financial expectations and raising over $104 million.

Since its public launch on November 12, 2016, Soaring has directed

funds to five priority areas: Artistic Excellence; New Productions; Touring;

Community Engagement and The National Ballet of Canada Endowment

Foundation. With these funds, the National Ballet has grown its repertoire

of new productions, strengthened its position on the international stage

through touring and expanded education and outreach initiatives designed

to improve accessibility to dance.

The generosity of individual and corporate donors has been on full display

throughout the Campaign and has provided a powerful vote of confidence in

the current trajectory of growth. The future does not belong to the company

alone, but to all who delight in the power and beauty of great dance.

Thank you to all donors for contributing to the Soaring Campaign and to

the Campaign Cabinet for stewarding this historic undertaking to a

successful conclusion. The impact of your generosity – on production

quality, the dancers, the company’s ability to tour and to engage with

the community – will endure for generations.

Please refer to page 37 for donor recognition.

Community Engagement

CreativActionThe National Ballet of Canada launched CreativAction, a new project focused on developing Canadian dancemakers and supporting the broader dance community in Toronto, featuring three core activities:

Choreographic WorkshopThe Choreographic Workshop provides National Ballet dancers and independent choreographers the opportunity to create works in collaboration with the company’s artists, music and production staff, within the National Ballet’s facilities. Six choreographers participated in the 2018/19 Choreographic Workshop sessions.

Open Space From the launch of CreativAction to the end of the 2018/19, the National Ballet provided 778 hours in the company’s studio space for free to independent choreographers through Open Space. The number of hours will rise to up to 1,200 hours in a full season.

Micro-commissionsThe National Ballet commissions choreographers to create three new small-scale and innovative dance works per season that are flexible and can be presented in a wide variety of contexts. There was one micro-commission during the 2018/19 season with 550 attendees.

Choreographic Associate Robert Binet serves as Creative Producer of CreativAction, and collaborates with artists within and outside the National Ballet to adjudicate applications to the three core CreativAction programmes. During last season, artists that participated in mentoring and/or adjudication included Heidi Strauss, Belinda McGuire, Alyssa Martin and Rodney Diverlus.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Last season, The National Ballet of Canada continued its work with facilitator Charles Smith and Cultural Pluralism in the Arts Movement Ontario (CPAMO) to develop a comprehensive, institution-wide Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Plan for the company. Toronto is one of the world’s most diverse cities and we want to ensure that the National Ballet reflects that diversity across our workplace, on our stages, in our Board room, in our audience, and in work with the community.

As part of this work, a Task Force was created, and meetings with internal and external stakeholders conducted. In addition, an environmental scan of international EDI practices in the arts was conducted. Our work with CPAMO will continue throughout the 2019/20 season. New Initiatives

Staging ChangeIn 2018/19 The National Ballet of Canada participated in Stage 2 of Staging Change, a multi-year strategic investment program offered through The Metcalf Foundation in cooperation with EmcArts and geared to promoting adaptive change and resilience for Toronto’s performing arts organizations.

In Stage 2, Onsite Organizational Coaching, a cross-departmental team of National Ballet staff, artists and volunteers participated in a facilitator-led series of interactive workshops to develop the practice of identifying complex challenges and pilot promising solutions. Part of this process was to test small experiments with “radical intent” which shifted our focus off stage and out of the theatre to invite engagement with our community. Three experiments were tested in June.

1. Speakers Corner: A booth was set up outside the Four Seasons Centre where people could ask questions and share their thoughts about the National Ballet, ballet and dance in general.

2. Let’s Dance: At the intermission of each performance of Physical Thinking, members of the audience were invited to learn and dance a short simple excerpt of choreography from one of the ballets on the programme throughout the lobbies of the theatre.

3. Ballet Speed Date: A group of 30 people under 40 from diverse backgrounds, who had never attended a ballet, were invited to experience a performance of Physical Thinking and The Merry Widow, followed by a moderated feedback discussion.

Valuable learning indicated that our community wants to be more engaged with us; they appreciate being asked for honest feedback and they are delighted by opportunities to dance with us.

Under the guidance of EmcArts, the National Ballet will continue to focus on developing innovative ideas to deepen our engagement with today’s diverse audiences and artists and make the National Ballet more inclusive, responsive and relevant to the needs of our community. New Initiatives

Digital ReachThe Digital Reach initiative is a three-year effort funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, and addresses the persistent challenges of creating, capturing and distributing content (performances, rehearsals, lectures, interviews, behind-the-scenes footage) to Canadian and global audiences. The project will demonstrate how arts institutions can develop content for greater audience engagement. Participating arts organizations are exploring opportunities to engage with content aggregators to determine the potential for distribution to Canadian and foreign markets. The project will also explore new and emerging technology and how it relates to both online content and live performance.

This deeply collaborative initiative had its first convening in June of 2019 at the SIRT Centre at Sheridan College, where teams from The National Ballet of Canada and the Canadian Opera Company had the opportunity to engage with new technologies in development, and discuss potential opportunities for collaboration in testing new ideas that leverage technology to bring our work to more Canadians. New Initiatives

Canadian Code of Conduct for the Performing Arts

In July of 2019, The National Ballet of Canada implemented an institution-wide Code of Conduct and Ethics, which states clear expectations of behaviour in a respectful workplace, along with available reporting mechanisms and an investigative process.

In addition to this internal initiative, Executive Director Barry Hughson led a national effort to develop the first Canadian Code of Conduct for the Performing Arts, as part of the Coordinating Committee of Respectful Workplaces in the Arts. The National Code was completed in June of 2019 and launched across the country in September of 2019 as part of Culture Days.

In his statement presented at a press conference in Ottawa, Mr. Hughson stated, “As someone who has been both a professional artist and arts administrator, I’m proud of the way that our community has rallied together, across disciplines and across the country, to help drive the change that is required to improve working conditions for Canadian artists. Artists bring extraordinary beauty and creativity to our shared human experience and we should all be committed to creating the environment required to allow their gifts to flourish”. In Memoriam

Photos by Tk, Tk, John Lindquist and Andrew Oxenham.

Sandra Faire

Sandra Faire was a cherished friend and trailblazer within our ballet family. Sandra made an incredible impact on the National Ballet as a volunteer and donor. She joined the Board of Directors in 2004, served as a founding member of the Soaring Campaign Cabinet and co-chaired the 60th Anniversary Diamond Gala with her husband Ivan Fecan. A passionate advocate for innovation, Sandra created The Producers’ Circle in 2012 to facilitate new production planning and provided landmark support for Alexei Ratmansky’s Romeo and Juliet in 2011. She also had great respect and affection for the dancers, sponsoring Principal Dancer Elena Lobsanova from her time in the Corps de Ballet. Sandra’s love for the company showed in all that she did to support, host and steward its activities, and her legacy will carry on with The Sandra Faire Fund in the Endowment Foundation.

Brigita Gulens

Brigita Gulens filled her life with art: ballet, opera, theatre, musicals and Latvian songs and folk dances. She became a Life Member of the Volunteer Committee of The National Ballet of Canada after serving for more than three decades as a volunteer and attending countless ballet performances with family and friends. She instilled her love of the arts in her children and grandchildren, supporting their passions and endeavours with a limitless supply of theatre tickets. She is survived by her loving family, who established the Gulens Family Fund at The National Ballet of Canada, Endowment Foundation in her memory.

Walter Homburger, C.M.

Walter Homburger was one of Canada’s most important arts leaders and served as the company’s first Tour Manager and first General Manager from 1951 – 1955. During a long and distinguished career that included a tenure of 25 years as Managing Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Walter’s passion for the arts influenced many, both locally and globally, throughout the performing arts community. He was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1984 and received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in 2010. He passed away at the age of 95.

Mary McDonald

Mary A. McDonald was a pianist with The National Ballet of Canada for 35 years. She grew up in a Toronto household filled with music and she was deeply inspired by the arts. At the age of 13, she was recruited to play for the Canadian Grand Opera, the precursor to the Canadian Opera Company, where her father Joseph was a soprano. In 1958, she launched her 35-year career with the National Ballet, where she nurtured many young dancers, including Karen Kain and Frank Augustyn, whom she accompanied to the Moscow International Ballet Competition in 1973, taking the award for top pianist. A kind and generous person, Mary was a treasured member of the National Ballet family.
