Welcome to theSooke Salmon Enhancement Society's
Fifteenth AnnualChinook Salmon Derby
HISTORYFrom the early 1960s Jack Brooks and a few volunteers could see theneedtoenhancesalmon runs in theSookeRiverand localcreeks. WithJack’s persistence, the enhancement grew from clearing log jams, salvaging and relocation of fry, to clearing a small site on privateproperty where a few homemade gravel incubation boxes and oldbathtubswereused tohatchandcatchnew fry. In 1981, theHatcherywas officially founded on Rocky Creek, near Demamiel Creek andYoung Lake. The land that the hatchery is on is leased at a nominalsum from Timber West.
Expanding froma fewmore incubationboxes to stacks of Heath trays, increasing the number of Capilano troughs, andadding large rearingtanks was made possible by the hard work of many volunteers. TheHatchery of today has grown to be the main influence on the ever-increasing returns of Chinook and Coho to the Sooke River and itstributaries. Because the Jack Brooks Hatchery releases up to 700,000Chinook and up to 200,000Coho yearly, the proceeds from this Derbywill help the volunteers’ endeavours to ensure salmonwill return to ourarea for all of us to enjoy.
The Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society’s members thank you foryour continued support. We hatch ‘em so you can catch ‘em. Goodluck!
