Transcript of 2018 FALL - MSU Denver
Let me be the first to congratulate you on graduating from Metropolitan State University of Denver. You set a goal, worked diligently and made it to the finish line. It’s time to celebrate!
Let me also extend my gratitude to your family and friends who have supported you along the way. Without people cheering us on, we would never succeed in reaching our dreams.
You are part of a remarkable graduating class: 1,611 students applied for Commencement this fall. That’s an impressive number of Roadrunners who are on their way to great things.
And that’s good news for MSU Denver, too. Because when you succeed, the University succeeds.
We believe that every student should have an opportunity to better their life. And we know that higher education is the key factor in providing upward economic and social mobility. That’s why we offer the highest-quality education at the lowest cost in Colorado.
Our students come from every background and experience. We have veterans looking to re-establish themselves in the workforce, first-generation college students trying to do a little better than their parents and plenty of people who want to change directions in their careers. They may have taken a zigzagging path to get to college, but they find their way here and graduate as proud Roadrunners.
Today, you join an alumni community of nearly 92,000, with 80 percent living in Colorado. That’s why we say that Roadrunners power the state economy and add to the cultural vibrancy of its communities.
It’s also further proof of why we need to give every student a fair shot, why we define ourselves not by whom we exclude but by whom we include. Because every student has the potential to be something or someone greater, to move up the social and economic ladder – in short, to achieve the American dream.
When you leave here today, you’ll start on your next road. As a well-rounded, critical-thinking, career-ready graduate, you will go on to incredible places and, ultimately, to amazing achievements. Please let us know when you get there, so we can brag about your success.
And don’t forget to proudly tell everyone you know that you graduated from MSU Denver: the model urban university for opportunity, diversity, excellence and transformation.
Sincerely,
Janine Davidson, Ph.D. President

Metropolitan State University of Denver 5
Academic attire is modeled after monks’ clothing from the Middle Ages, when college faculty and students were members of religious orders. In England, the faculty of many colleges and universities still wear gowns, hoods and caps in the classroom.
In the early 20th century, colleges and universities throughout the world adopted guidelines for the design and colors of academic regalia. An institution may design and register special attire for its administrators and graduates, but it must conform to certain standards. Once registered, the design and color combination may not be duplicated by other institutions.
The bachelor’s gown is most often black and has long sleeves that taper to a point in the back. It is always worn closed.
The gown signifying the master’s degree also is usually black but may be worn open or closed. It features oblong sleeves that hang below the wrist, tapering to a square cut with a cutaway arc.
Although usually black, the doctoral gown is sometimes seen in colors – often gold, purple, blue or red. The gown may be worn open or closed. The opening of the gown is faced with velvet, and three velvet chevrons run across its bell-shaped sleeves.
The velvet facing and chevrons may be black or the color representing the graduate’s field of study.
The hood varies in length and shape according to the degree it represents: the shortest and smallest signifies a bachelor’s degree, and the longest and widest signifies a doctoral degree.
Academic Regalia
The velvet bordering the hood represents the graduate’s field of study.
The satin lining of the hood, each a specific design, represents the college or university at which the individual earned his or her degree.
The Oxford cap, or mortarboard as it is better known, completes the attire. Those holding graduate degrees usually wear black tassels on the Oxford cap, but those holding doctoral degrees may wear tassels of gold thread and may also elect to wear a four-sided or eight-sided velvet tam instead of the Oxford cap. Some universities have designated the Cambridge cap – a large, soft beret – for their administrators and those who have earned a doctoral degree at that institution.
At MSU Denver, bachelor’s candidates wear colored tassels on the Oxford cap to represent the academic department from which they earned their degrees. Master’s candidates wear a hood with the representative color.
In addition to her academic regalia, President Janine Davidson, Ph.D. wears the University’s chain of office, a visible symbol of her authority as the institution’s leader.

In the summer of 2017, President Janine Davidson, Ph.D., conducted a listening tour with industry and business leaders across Colorado. She also spoke with members of the campus community and gathered feedback from a Universitywide survey and focus groups.
What she found in her research was that graduates of MSU Denver share five characteristics that set them apart from their peers. These traits are the reason why so many companies seek and hire the University’s alumni, and why Roadrunners tend to have success in almost every field.
She dubbed these characteristics the Roadrunner difference.
Roadrunners are:
Tenacious They are determined to succeed and achieve. If they get knocked down, they get back up.
Diverse They come from every background imaginable and learn to be broad-minded by grappling with a variety of experiences and viewpoints.
Primed They have job-ready skills and a deep knowledge of the issues and dynamics that shape the workforce.
Purposeful They want to use their education to make change. Every degree earned has a ripple effect, spreading benefits across metro Denver and beyond.
Entrepreneurial They don’t settle for walking on well-worn trails – they run their own roads.
Today, you join the nearly 92,000 Roadrunner graduates who embody these traits. Go forth and show the worldwhat makes MSU Denver alumni unique – the Roadrunner Difference.

Luis Paredes, President’s Award Winner
Defying the odds by crunching the numbers,Luis Paredes earns two accounting degrees while working full time and advocating for his peers.
Luis Paredes is a man with a plan. He’s receiving both his bachelor’s degree in accounting and his master’s degree in professional accountancy this December, a traditional five-year path that Paredes finished in four years.
It’s an impressive accomplishment even before you factor in the 45 hours a week he works in sales. It’s a work schedule that allowed him to save up enough money to buy his parents a house as a junior in college, all while putting himself through college.
How did he manage two degrees and two housing payments while working full time?
With a spreadsheet, of course.
Paredes tracked his classes, schoolwork and Sunday-to-Friday work shifts in Microsoft Excel along with his free time, or lack thereof, and his finances.
“I was really having a hard time keeping up with rent, and I was helping my parents pay their rent, too. I couldn’t do it anymore. So, I came up with a plan to buy my parents a home,” Paredes said. “With my Principles of Accounting class experience, I decided to build a spreadsheet, which is what we do. I tracked all my expenses and made a financial picture of what I should do and what it should look like.”
Paredes is a Mexican immigrant covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Although he’s lived in the U.S. since he was 8 years old, he wasn’t comfortable with his immigrant status until finding his way at Metropolitan State University of Denver, where he became an active voice for his fellow DACA students. His advocacy and work ethic, combined with his 3.77 GPA while completing two rigorous degrees, have earned him MSU Denver’s President’s Award for fall 2018.
“The main reason I applied for the President’s Award is that I used to be very ashamed of being a DACA student. I know there are students out there who may still be ashamed. I want to show them there’s no reason to be,” Paredes said.
At MSU Denver, Paredes became a Puksta Scholar, a scholarship program that requires students to complete a civic engagement project in the community. Paredes’ project “Funding the Dream” was personal: He set out to find financial-aid sources for DACA students, who aren’t eligible for federal aid.The Migration Policy Institute estimates that DACA recipients are almost as likely as other U.S. adults to enroll in college, but just 4 percent earn a bachelor’s degree (compared with 18 percent of other adults). Finances no doubt play a part.
“As a Puksta Scholar, Luis applied for and participated in a rigorous program designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and experiences necessary to become catalysts for lasting positive change in the community,” said Tim Meeks, civic engagement program manager at MSU Denver.
Paredes got involved with MSU Denver’s DREAMer Network and began using his own immigrant experience to fundraise for scholarships in the community.
His hard work has paid off. He’ll start as a full-time tax associate at CPA firm CliftonLarsonAllen in January, and once he gets through tax season, he’s got a new goal in mind: his first vacation in four years.

Commencement Speaker: Michelle Lucero, J.D.
Michelle Lucero, chief administrative officer and general counsel for Children’s Hospital Colorado, heralds from the small, rural town of Ignacio, Colorado. After attaining her bachelor’s degree at Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Missouri, she earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Lucero leads the Legal Affairs, Corporate Compliance, Information Security, and Risk Management teams for Children’s. Previously she served as Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Vice President of Employee Relations/Associate General Counsel for Centura Health; Deputy City Attorney for Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper; Associate General Counsel for
US West; Associate General Counsel for Graphic Packaging; and Assistant General Counsel for Denver Health.
She is a Trustee for the Boettcher Foundation as well as MSU Denver, where she was a former chair. She serves on the Denver Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Exploratory Committee, the Denver Chamber of Commerce Leadership Foundation Board, the Winterpark Authorization Authority and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science’s President’s Leadership Council. She also has served on the board of Mi Casa Resource Center for Women, the Women’s Bar Association, the Denver Bar Association, the Colorado Prevention Center, the Denver Victims Service and is a past president of the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association. Lucero’s honors include a 2013 Woman of Distinction from the Girls Scouts of Colorado, a 2015 “25 Most Powerful Women in Colorado” from Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce, a 2015 Trailblazer Award from the Latinas First Foundation, the 2016 Outstanding Corporate Counsel by the University Of Colorado School of Law, the 2016 Business Woman of the Year by the Colorado Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the 2017 Outstanding Woman in Business (Law) by the Denver Business Journal, and a 2018 Denver Business Journal C-Suite Award.

Becky Alter, Provost’s Award Winner
Becky Alter has toured much of the world as a musician. Her next gig is preserving it for generations to come.
Playing at Red Rocks Amphitheater might be the crowning achievement for some musicians. But for Becky Alter, it was another steppingstone on a zig-zag path that will next lead the individualized degree program student across the Commencement stage this December to graduate summa cum laude.
“I knew I was being called for something bigger, and there was a little voice in the back of my head saying, ‘You need to go back to school to do it,’” she said.
That something bigger is sustainable strategic planning for energy solutions, something she discovered while on tour overseas, where she observed the international
impacts of climate change. After returning stateside and eventually enrolling as a Roadrunner, she got connected to the University’s Honors Program, where she was a natural fit in a community of like-minded high achievers and instrumental in supercharging programming efforts, recounted Megan Hughes-Zarzo, Ph.D., Honors Program director.
Alter’s ambition serving on the Student Honors Council also translated to her thesis project titled “Motivating Millennials to Mitigate Climate Change,” which she said began as a look at communication strategies but evolved into a critical, deeper understanding of intergenerational appreciation and empowerment.
“She’s constantly willing to put ideas under scrutiny of someone who doesn’t think like her,” said Hughes-Zarzo. “That’s brave and constructive; that’s the mindset that helps build bridges across polarized environments.”
Being interdisciplinary isn’t just an approach to blend areas of academic study for Alter’s Independent Degree Program in sustainable strategic planning, either. She’s been an executive businesswoman who’s launched and run a successful management, marketing and sales company; built restaurants from the ground up in two countries; and learned three languages and performed in seven countries as a touring singer-songwriter.
“She’s a creative force and drives that force into whatever she’s doing to make it excellent,” said Hughes-Zarzo.
Alter said she appreciated the real-life applied background of MSU Denver faculty members and the constant advocacy of her wife, Kara King, and her parents.
“Even in your 40s, you need Mom and Dad’s love,” she said.
The road ahead isn’t set in stone for Alter, who’s exploring options in economic development, strategy and urban/wildland planning; she also discussed potential graduate study.
But with a proven record of determination and reinvention, it’s the connections she cultivated at MSU Denver she credited for cementing her dream of helping Colorado become the model location for renewable resources.
“I’ve had the opportunity to be educated by the most profoundly good, intelligent people I could imagine and have been able to work on wicked-cool projects, engaging with others as a community,” she said. “And that matters, because we’re all woven into this fabric together.”
