For over forty years Omnibus Press has been publishing the stories that matter from the music world. Omnibus Press is the World’s/Europe’s largest specialist publisher devoted to music writing, with around thirty new titles a year, with a backlist of over two hundred and seventy titles currently in print and many more as digital downloads.

Omnibus Press covers pop, rock, classical, metal, country, psyche, prog, electronic, dance, rap, jazz

and many more genres, in a variety of formats. With books that tell stories through graphic art and

photography, memoirs and biographies, Omnibus has constantly evolved its list to challenge what

a music book can be and this year we are releasing our first talking books. Among Omnibus Press’

earliest acquisitions was Rock Family Trees, by acclaimed music archivist Pete Frame, three editions

of which remain in print to this day and have been the basis of two BBC TV series. Over the following

decades Omnibus published many best-selling, definitive biographies on some of rock’s greatest

superstars. These include Morrissey & Marr: The Severed Alliance by Johnny Rogan, Dear Boy: The

Life Of Keith Moon by Tony Fletcher, Uptight: The Velvet Underground Story by Victor Bockris, Catch

A Fire: The Life of Bob Marley by Timothy White, Stevie Nicks - Visions, Dreams & Rumours by Zoë

Howe, Without Frontiers The Life And Music Of Peter Gabriel by Daryl Easlea and Under The Ivy: The

Life & Music of Kate Bush and George Harrison: Behind The Locked Door, both by Graeme Thomson,

all of which are regularly cited by magazines and critics as being amongst the finest rock biographies

ever published.

More recently Omnibus has published titles including That’s Entertainment: My Life In The Jam by

Rick Buckler, Supersonic, a collection of photographs of Oasis and their cover art by Michael Spencer

Jones, Mods: The New Religion by Paul ‘Smiler’ Anderson, Teenage Kicks: My Life As An Undertone by

Michael Bradley and The Thunder Story, which is already into its second printing. Last year Omnibus

Press released Wyatt at the Coyote Palace, Kristin Hersh’s tenth solo album, their first music release.

Omnibus also distribute the enormously successful Rare Record Price Guide, produced by Record

Collector magazine.

Among the highlights of Omnibus Press’ 2017 schedule are histories of rock and pop on British

television, the first investigation of Thurston Moore’s discography, told through the words of his

collaborators, an examination of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and the culture surrounding

it, fifty years on, the autobiography of Damo Suzuki, the new title from bestselling mod author Paul

‘Smiler’ Anderson, the ultimate recital of The Monkees saga and a biography of Slade, one of Britain’s

best-loved bands.

Drawing upon extensive new first hand interview material from Debbie Harry, Chris Stein and many other significant players in the band’s long history, a huge archive of personal materials and unpublished interviews, Blondie: Parallel Lives is the definitive eye-witness account of the group’s long and often tumultuous existence.

Beginning with their childhoods, backgrounds and influences, the book is also an evocative homage to the unique New York scene of the 1970s. It charts the development of Blondie to their massive popular success and eventual break up.

Blondie: Parallel Lives recounts how Debbie Harry set aside her career to Nurse Chris Stein through a debilitating and life-threatening genetic disease, the groups 1997 reformation and renaissance with the No Exit album, the controversy surrounding their induction into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, the release of Panic of Girls in 2012 and brings us up to date with The release of Ghost of Download and their 40th anniversary tour. Co-author Kris Needs has established a friendship with Blondie that endures to this day. As a trusted confidante, he now recounts the full story.

Published on the 60th anniversary of the first transmission of Six-Five Special and less than a week before The BRITs Rock & Pop on British TV tells the story of how music and television became mutually dependent, and a time when genuinely subversive moments in music history were broadcast directly into people’s living rooms.

With talent shows The X Factor and The Voice UK continuing to prove that music is still very much a visual medium often best enjoyed as a collective experience, Rock & Pop on British TV is the definitive read on the importance of music on telly from its inception to the present day.

John Lennon was a highly opinionated and controversial figure with a commanding personality and quick wit. He spoke candidly about his intense, sometimes tumultuous relationship with Yoko Ono, his split with the Beatles, his squabbles with Paul McCartney, and just about everything else. By the time he granted his—and this book’s—final interview, only hours before his death, he had become one of the most famous people on the planet and an articulate commentator on politics, human relations, and world peace.

Lennon on Lennon is an authoritative, anthology of some of Lennon’s most illuminating interviews, spanning the years 1964 to 1980. The majority have not been previously available in print, and several of the most important have not been widely available in any format.

Smashing It Up is the history of this important band and their original members. It’s also packed with their encounters with music royalty, and their always strained relationship with the music business.

Pamela Des Barres was a regular on the Sunset Strip, where she knocked on rock stars’ backstage doors and immersed herself in the drugs, danger, and ecstasy of the freewheeling 1960s.

Over the next 10 years she had affairs with Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, Keith Moon and Jim Morrison, among others. As a member of the GTO’s, a girl group masterminded by Frank Zappa, she was in the thick of the most revolutionary renaissance in the history of modern popular music.

Warm, witty, and sexy, this kiss-and-tell–all stands out as the perfect chronicle of one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most thrilling eras, I’m With The Band is widely regarded as a feminist classic and becomes more iconic with every passing year.

Despite her infamy as “the World’s Most Famous Groupie” or “Queen of the Groupies,” Pamela Des Barres has many other facets, fascinations and unique talents.

Known mostly for her heady dalliances and friendships with classic rock’s elite dandies in the 60s and 70s, she presciently kept copious diaries about those madcap revolutionary days and nights. Pamela has written four books, I’m With the Band, Take Another Little Piece of My Heart, (autobiographies) Rock Bottom: Dark Moments in Music Babylon, and most recently, Let’s Spend the Night Together: Backstage Secrets of Rock Muses and Supergroupies.

The 1980s songwriting partnership of McLennan/Forster was a little like an Australian Lennon/McCartney. The pair wrote all the band’s distinctively original material and, like their more famous counterparts, shared the credits and alternated on lead vocals.

Grant & I is an extraordinary portrait of an intense, creative, sometimes fraught friendship that represented a genuine meeting of artistic minds. In Grant & I, the reader is given a front-row seat at the sessions that produced an incredibly prolific and diverse song catalogue.

Just as The Go-Betweens were like no other music group, so this book is like no other music memoir. It is wise and witty, poignant, insightful, self-deprecating and knowledgeable. Robert Forster is as natural a storyteller and prose writer as he is a songwriter, and Grant & I is an unforgettable ride.

Ludwig van Beethoven (German: 17 December 1770 – 26 March 1827) was a German composer and pianist. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western art music, he remains one of the most famous and influential of all composers.

Born in Bonn, Beethoven displayed his musical talents at an early age and at the age of 21 he moved to Vienna and began studying, quickly gaining a reputation as a virtuoso pianist.

By his 30s his hearing began to deteriorate, and by the last decade of his life he was almost totally deaf, giving up conducting and performing in public but continuing to compose, with many of his works come from these last years.

Lavishly illustrated throughout, this fascinating new biography sets Mozart’s musical revolution in the context of the times.

Here are the complete lyrics of Leonard Cohen accompanied by Malka Marom’s intimate portrayal of her friendship with Cohen, which spanned four decades.

From the saving grace Cohen’s book The Spice-Box of Earth offered a lonely woman fresh from Tel Aviv in the foreign cold climate of Montreal in 1961, through their first interview held over five days in 1974 on the release of Cohen’s album New Skin for the Old Ceremony, Marom shares her interviews and recollections – detailing Cohen’s political activity, his devotion to his spiritual teachers, his connection to Phil Spector, friendship with Bob Dylan, and his absolute devotion as a father.

Sharing their conversations, Cohen’s lyrics, thoughts on writing, performance, poetry, music and love, Marom takes us into Leonard Cohen’s home and shows us his heart.

The biggest and most comprehensive Monkees book ever!

In 1965 America launched its assault on The Beatles – a blueprint boy band assembled by audition called The Monkees who against all the odds triumphed with their music, their personalities and their zany half-hour TV shows. Remembered now for hits like ‘I’m A Believer’, ‘Last Train To Clarkesville and ‘Daydream Believer’, the quartet of Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith spent three years in a blazing spotlight before disintegrating into a mess of recriminations and ill-feeling.

With contributions from all the major players in the Monkees’ saga – including the four Monkees themselves – Reel To Real is an oral history of the group that follows their adventures from the concept dreamed up by businessmen through to their eventual split. Along the way we learn how they came together in the first place, how each record and TV show was made, how they fared when they toured the world, the background to their controversial movie Head! and the financial chaos that loomed with the realization that the only ones who didn’t make any money out of The Monkees were The Monkees themselves.

A B O U T T H E A U T H O R … Author Gary Strobl is a life-long Monkees fan based in Los Angeles.

Henry Diltz is a renowned US rock photographer who befriended and photographed The Monkees in their heyday.

Harvey Kubernik is a writer, editor and journalist whose work has appeared in, Melody Maker, Crawdaddy!, Musician, Goldmine, MIX, the Los Angeles Times and MOJO.

When the world’s greatest pop band played their final public concert, in January 1969, there were no tickets or posters printed. When John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr emerged at lunchtime from the headquarters of their own company, Apple, five storeys above London’s Savile Row, only a select group of people knew what the hell was happening.

The rooftop concert was one of the Beatles’ most spontaneous acts. The Beatles on the Roof studies the rooftop concert in penetrating detail, uncovering new truths and debunking old myths about the event. Nobody knew it yet – not even the band – but this was the last time they would play live to the public. A B O U T T H E A U T H O R …

Since 1997, Tony Barrell has contributed regular features to The Sunday Times on pop music, modern art and popular culture. Topics have included The Beatles, Abbey Road Studios, the longest songs ever recorded, the history of tribute bands, the world’s strangest concert venues, and the exercise music used by celebrities.

Tony has also interviewed and profiled many music stars, such as Ronnie Wood, Jimmy Page, Shirley Manson, Joan Baez, Alison Goldfrapp, Celine Dion and Mike Oldfield.

Whatever Happened to Slade?

More than simply the iconic group of the 1970s glam rock era, Slade’s huge popularity and the enduring levels of affection that still exist for the band have served to establish the Black Country quartet as one of the quintessential British rock acts. Although the original quartet ceased working as a unit in 1992, Noddy Holder, Dave Hill, Jim Lea and Don Powell remain household names thanks to the continuing interest in the group’s extensive legacy of classic material and the indelible impression that they have imprinted on popular culture.

The first serious biography of Slade since 1984, Whatever Happened to Slade? details the complete story of this unique band, as well as the personal histories of the four unique individuals who combined to turn Slade into a genuine phenomenon. Beginning by exploring the background and influences that shaped the foursome, the book charts their emergence from the 1960s beat boom, their initial successes, the epoch-making glam heyday, Slade’s attempts to crack America and subsequent re-emergence as hard rocking heavyweights, through to their final dissolution and post-Slade careers. Featuring new interviews with all four members of the band, as well as a host of other key figures in their history, Whatever Happened to Slade? represents the final word on a band that won hearts and perforated eardrums across four incident-filled, often ironically bittersweet decades.

Amy WinehouseA Life Through the LensDarren Bloom, Elliott Bloom & Matt Trollope

George Michael was pop’s great survivor. UK radio’s most-played artist of the last 35 years and the superstar behind the legendary eighties’ Faith album and tour, he was a musician with international credibility. He was also a disaster-magnet whose serial missteps and scandals never seemed to dent his professional reputation.

This searching biography throws a light on Georgios Panayiotou, the Anglo-Greek London boy who had to hide his homosexuality when he was half of the pop phenomenon Wham! before becoming a global superstar and an overtly gay man.

In ‘Careless Whispers’ author Robert Steele details every step of the conflicted star’s career and digs deep into his closely-guarded private life. Drawing on first-hand accounts from Michael’s ex-manager and the journalist who was part of his social circle in the 1980s, Careless Whispers goes on to explore the more recent scandals and the imprisonment that might have derailed George Michael’s career but, perhaps predictably, proved to be just another interruption in the métier of a much-loved icon.

Photographers Darren and Elliott Bloom had a remarkably close working relationship with Amy Winehouse.

Their photos appeared in the recent acclaimed documentary Amy and now they have opened up their archive for this lavish photo book.

When the Screaming Stops: The Dark History of the Bay City RollersSimon Spence

Wyatt At The Coyote PalaceKristin Hersh

The Bay City Rollers were, in many ways, the group that defined the seventies. Selling millions of records, with screaming fans following them everyewhere, they were the logical conclusion to the commercial success of The Beatles: a fabricated act designed to appeal to teenagers with none of the creativity of The Beatles necessary.

They were also mired in tragedy, abuse and exploitation at the hands of their manager Tam Paton, a man who emodied the dark side of the seventies pop machine.

This detailed account of the dark side of pop for the fans, managers and acts, stands with the best long form music journalism and features a foreword from Doctor Sarah Nelson, Research Associate at the University of Edinburgh and one of Scotland’s leading commentators on sexual abuse and exploitation.

Wyatt At The Coyote Palace is the new full length album from Kristin Hersh. Released as a hardback book, with colourimages and full text for each song, with accompanying CDs this is Kristin Hersh at her coruscating best.

Photographs and artwork by Dave Narcizo and Kristin Hersh.

“As memoirs, her albums are so intensely personal it’s little wonder she’s amassed a cult fanbase; as art, they’re arguments for the value of unapologetic individuality.” — Pitchfork

This history uncovers the myths and reality of the bands emerging from the artistic backdrop of a wealthy German post WWII modernistic city and explores the emergence of the electronic scene in Dusseldorf and the conditions that fostered such a creative explosion and became so influential for musicians and artists all over the world.

Jack White was born John Anthony Gillis in 1975 into a musical, Catholic family of 10 children in Detroit.

Their 2001 breakthrough album, White Blood Cells, brought them international fame with the hit single and accompanying music video, Fell in Love with a Girl. White has not stopped moving since.

Jack White: How He Built an Empire from the Blues traces White’s music from collaborations with famous artists, including Loretta Lynn and Bob Dylan to founding The Raconteurs with Brendan Benson in 2006, and in 2009 founded The Dead Weather with Alison Mosshart of The Kills. It also offers the definitive history of the Detroit scene in which The White Stripes first flourished, interviews with former bandmates including Brendan Benson and Third Man artists such as Neil Young and Seasick Steve.

No Quarter: The Three Lives of Jimmy PageMartin Power

Freddie MercuryAn Illustrated LifeMark Blake

No Quarter: The Three Lives Of Jimmy Page explores the life, times and music of the man behind one of the 20th century’s greatest bands: Led Zeppelin.

Using new and exclusive interviews Martin Power tells the full story of Jimmy Page’s long career. Starting in the early Sixties session scene when the teenage Page contributed to recordings by The Who, The Rolling Stones, Tom Jones and many more, the author goes on to explore Page’s time in The Yardbirds and how they would metamorphose into the legendary Led Zeppelin.

Supported by album reviews, rare photographs, a full discography and candid conversations with Page’s friends, managers and musical collaborators, author Martin Power’s No Quarter: The Three Lives Of Jimmy Page represents the most comprehensive and up-to-date biography yet written about Jimmy Page - a “one man guitar army” and true music legend.

When Freddie Mercury died in 1991, the music world lost one of its most flamboyant characters, as well as a supremely talented writer and vocalist.

Best known as the lead singer with Queen, his amazing four-octave voice was a distinctive element in the band’s unique sound which resulted in more than a dozen million-selling albums over three decades.

As the band’s main songwriter he was responsible for some of their greatest hits including Killer Queen, We Are The Champions and Bohemian Rhapsody.

An Illustrated Life is a definitive retrospective on the life and work of Freddie Mercury, both as the lead singer with Queen and in his much- acclaimed solo capacity, it is fully illustrated throughout, including archive memorabilia and many previously unpublished photographs.

This extraordinary biography tells

how Jessica Ellen Cornish from

Ilford in north east London

overcame being ‘not really that

good at anything’ to reinvent herself

as Jessie J and record one of the

biggest selling albums of 2011

Success came in the face of extraordinary setbacks. Childhood bullying, an irregular heartbeat, a serious fall from

the stage and a minor stroke at the age of 18 all threatened the health and career of the BRIT school student who

fi rst pursued fame through dance and the musical theatre.

An ill-fated stint in a girl group was followed by a solo record deal with a label that almost immediately went bust. As an

unknown support act Jessie J was often booed off the stage, but although dogged by ill-health and career setbacks she

proved unstoppable. In 2011, following the release of the album Who Are You, Jessie J won a Brit Award for Critics Choice and

a slew of other awards. This is the story of how she did it.

Author Chloe Govan has interviewed record producers, school classmates, friends, dance tutors and many others to unearth the real

stories behind Jessie J’s improbable road to fame.
