2014 ANNUAL REPORT

As we began our second decade of operations, one might have expected that life would have become fairly ho-hum and business as usual. Not so! Look-

ing back, our year was once again fi lled with many “fi rsts” that indicate that not only are we making progress…we are continuing to innovate while making meaningful change!

We started the year with an important new initiative– the launch of our partnership with Oldeani Secondary School. Given our experience managing Gyetighi Primary School, we did not take on this challenge with as much trepidation as one might expect, but it was still a big leap, and by all accounts a challenge that we have met head on and with remarkable success. Later in the year we celebrated another new milestone–the graduation of our fi rst RVCV kids from Form 4 (high school)! In September, two of our other RVCV kids completed vocational education and were the fi rst to leave the nest and start their “real” adult jobs. Additionally, 2014 marked the fi rst time that TCF’s Board of Directors visited the Children’s Village together to celebrate all that we have accomplished to date and look towards all that lies ahead.

Creating a healthy and positive future for children has always been at the heart of TCF’s mission. However, as our children have grown, our vision for what is possible for them—and for our community—has grown just as big. Rec-ognizing that the most effective way to improve out-comes for marginalized children is to strengthen the communities they live in, TCF has expanded beyond the Rift Valley Children’s Village to also serve the families of Oldeani Ward. The challenges facing these families are numerous and interrelated, which is why TCF has adopted an innovative, multi-pronged approach to give families the tools and opportunities they need to help themselves.

Our model is unique in that it attacks poverty from all sides through education, healthcare and microfi nance programs in order to create permanent and lasting change. Read on to discover how each of our programs plays a key role in lifting lives and building futures in our community.

Hundreds of orphanages exist in Tanza-nia to temporarily give food and shel-

ter to orphaned and abandoned children. However, the Rift Valley Children’s Village (RVCV) is unique in that it goes far beyond the basics and provides holistic care in a stable and loving family setting. Not only are the 89 children living at RVCV not up for adoption, but we strive to make sure that every child knows how much they are loved and valued as a permanent part of our family. Each child is supported through secondary school and remains a part of

RIFT VALLEY CHILDREN’S VILLAGECHILDREN’S VILLAGE The Rift Valley Children’s Village is my

favorite place in the world. I’ve worked with children in many different settings, and these are truly the happiest kids that I know. India and Peter have created a home that is happy and relaxed, and the sense of feeling safe and unconditionally loved they provide gives the children the confi dence to get outside to play, explore and discover. RVCV functions as a family, and all of the family members are held accountable. The kids know what is expected of them, and work to meet a level of expectations that has been set high. I have total confi dence that the children of RVCV will succeed at whatever they put their minds to because they know they are loved, they know they have support and understanding, and they have been convinced that they can succeed since the day they arrived at RVCV.”

“our family even as they begin their fi rst jobs and start their own families.

The RVCV team also strives to provide our children with a range of experiences and life skills in order to build their confi dence and broaden their horizons so they can meet adulthood feeling valued and worthy of success. It is our belief that if children receive a quality education, have access to regular healthcare, and are part of a stable and loving environment, they will become productive citizens who can and will shape Tanzania’s future for the better.

GYETIGHI PRIMARY SCHOOL

G yetighi Primary School (GPS) exceed-ed all of our hopes and expectations

in 2014 and proved once again that our investments in local education are paying big dividends. GPS moved up the ranks and was not only the #1 government school in the region, but also ranked in the top 2% of all schools in the country - both public and private. Students’ test scores on the challenging Standard 7 National Exam were 6% higher than the previous year’s results. We are also proud to say that 100% of Gyetighi students passed the

all-important Standard 4 and Standard 7 National Exams, making them eligible to advance to secondary school.

In 2014 we continued to innovate with the launch of the Gyetighi Parents Savings Program, designed to encourage local parents to save for secondary school expenses. Knowing how challenging it can be for the families in our community to save money, this program provides a secure location for them to put aside funds each month and even offers a small monetary incentive for making deposits. To date, 70% of the parents have signed up and started saving, many for the fi rst time in their lives.

2014 also marked the fi rst year we em-ployed a full-time English as a Second Language teacher at GPS, which imme-diately showed results: 8 students scored 100% on the English portion of their National Exam, a fi rst for GPS!

The success of our programs at Gyetighi Primary School (GPS) created demand

by the local community for a similar inter-vention at the secondary school level. In November 2013, TCF signed a fi ve-year contract with the government of Tanzania to co-manage Oldeani Secondary School (OSS) with the goal of making the school a center of academic excellence. Follow-ing the same model we used at GPS, TCF is providing the leadership, resources and infrastructure improvements necessary to make Oldeani the top performing second-ary school in the region.

NJanuary 2014 marked the offi cial launch of the partnership, and as expected, the year was full of exciting milestones as well as more than a few challenges. Improve-ments completed include:• Addition of 7 teachers to the faculty• Upgrades to school infrastructure including new classrooms, a new science laboratory, and a rain water management system • Purchase of an array of laboratory equipment for use in chemistry and biology labs• Purchase of $15,000 worth of textbooks

Despite the hurdles, we are already seeing rapid results from our interven-tions. For the fi rst time in the history of the school,100% of Oldeani’s Form 2 stu-dents passed their standardized National Exams. Equally promising - almost 70% of Oldeani Secondary students passed the rigorous Form 4 National Exam.

In addition to rising test scores, we noted the following progress indicators, which give us great hope of seeing even stronger results in 2015:

 • Increased teacher attendance • Use of alternative (non-

corporal) forms of discipline • Improved student engagement

For many generations, seasonal coffee picking was the only employment avail-

able to families living in the rural areas surrounding RVCV. This lack of opportu-nity led to unemployment rates near 80% and average incomes under $200 a year. Recognizing that economic empowerment is critical to breaking the cycle of poverty, TCF created a Microfi nance Program in 2008 to provide local entrepreneurs with the training and resources needed to start and successfully operate small businesses.

New clients undergo thorough prescreen-ing by our Microfi nance Program staff, a week of training, and approval of their business plan before they can qualify for a loan. Training classes teach bookkeeping, marketing, savings strategies and business plan development. Initial loans are approx-imately $125, however, through continued training and prompt repayment to demon-strate creditworthiness, clients can increase their loan amounts up to $1,250.

2014 was a successful year for the Mi-crofi nance Program. Through two surveys conducted by our team, we learned fi rst-hand that the program is impacting families in a meaningful way. Most mportantly, the average income of our clients has increased when compared to surveys from the past two years. Even better, this newly found income is being put to good use: the majority of clients funneled their profi ts into housing and education opportunities for their families.

From the start, TCF has made access to medical care for our children and

our community a top priority. RVCV employs a full-time registered nurse at the Children’s Village who provides our children, volunteers, staff and community with essential healthcare services. RVCV’s nurse also holds annual health checks for all the students and teachers at Gyetighi Primary and Oldeani Secondary Schools. These head-to-toe assessments include a vision test, height, weight and temperature measurements, and screening and refer-rals for any serious conditions. In addition,

a volunteer dental team led by Dr. Teresa Castner held a six-day clinic and all RVCV kids and many staff benefi ted from exams, cleanings, and restorative treatments.

For serious medical cases, TCF partners with FAME (Foundation for African Med-icine and Education), a fully-equipped medical facility in Karatu. FAME holds free bi-monthly clinics at the Children’s Village for all the children and adults in our area. Having ready access to basic medical care has greatly reduced infant mortality, new mother mortality, and a wide range of de-bilitating diseases in our catchment area.

In 2014 RVCV’s nurse liaised with health-care providers in Tanzania and the US to provide treatment for local patients with leprosy, hydrocephalus, bone TB and frac-tures. Additionally, TCF arranged special-ized surgeries and follow-up treatment for 23 children from our area, greatly improv-ing their quality of life.

LETTER FROM OUR TREASURER

As we move into our second decade, TCF is well-positioned to expand the services that we provide to underserved families in

northern Tanzania, without losing sight of our core mission: to sup-port and aid the disadvantaged and orphaned children of Oldeani Ward. A key priority for 2015 is investing in our new Oldeani Sec-ondary School project, while ensuring that we continue to support our existing programs. We are able to do all of this only because of the continued enthusiastic support of our donors. Thank you!!!

In 2014, we received over $1,500,000 in contributions and other revenues, principally from individual donations and family foun-dations. TCF is dedicated to ensuring that donor funds are well spent, and that administration and fundraising expenses are kept to a minimum, so that 86 cents out of every dollar can go directly to programming. TCF also takes its long-term responsibility for provid-ing stable and uninterrupted care for our children and community seriously, which is why we have committed to keeping a year’s reserve of working capital in investment accounts. We entered 2015 in strong fi nancial condition, with approximately $675,000 in cash-on-hand and over $1,440,000 in our Merrill Lynch “rainy day” investment account. As of May 31, 2015, our fi nancial position continues to be strong, with over $710,000 in cash-on-hand and approximately $1,520,00 in our Merrill Lynch investment accounts.

The members of TCF’s Board of Directors view ourselves as stewards who are committed to supporting the children at RVCV and the education and community-based programs that are closely tied to the life of families in our area. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire TCF Commu-nity, thank you for making this possible.

OUR TEAM

Everyone knows the saying “It takes a village to raise a child,” and RVCV is no

exception to this rule. RVCV is a permanent home and family for 89 orphaned and aban-doned children, as well as a source of love and support for 21 Kids Living with Relatives. India Howell and Peter Leon Mmassy serve as legal guardians to the children living at the village, but it also takes a dedicated team of house mamas, social workers, a full-time nurse, support staff, and over 60 volunteers annually to keep everyone healthy and thriv-ing. “Asante sana” for all that they do for our children every day.

Additionally, TCF’s Board of Directors is an integral reason for TCF’s success, and we’d like to sincerely thank them for their service and support:
