Anthony BadgerHonorary Degree Recipient — Doctor ofHumane Letters

Historian and author Tony Badger is the Paul Mellon Professor of‘ American History at Cambridge University. Badger, a specialist in post-

1 World War 11 political history in the South, was elected a Fellow of theSociety of American Historians last year.Badger has held the Mellon professorship at Cambridge since 1992 andhas been Master of Clare College at Cambridge since 2003. He served asFellow of Sidney Sussex College at Cambridge from 1992 to 2003. Badgerpreviously taught at Newcastle University for 20 years. He was educated atCambridge, North Carolina State and Hull universities.Badger has written extensively about the New Deal and the post—1945

American South. His first two books had a North Carolina focus: Prosperity Road: The New Deal,Tobacco, and North Carolina and North Carolina and the New Deal. He subsequently wrote TheNew Deal: The Depression Years and New Deal/New South: The Anthony I Badger Reader. In 1997,he gave the Harrelson Lecture at North Carolina State. He has served as an editor for severalbooks on American political history and the civil rights movement.His latest book, FDR: The First Hundred Days, was chosen as then-British Prime Minister GordonBrown’s book of the year in 2008. The Observer, a leading British newspaper, described Badger’sbook as “top of the political class’s reading list on both sides of the Atlantic at Christmas.” Badgeris currently working on a biography of the late Albert Gore Sr., a US. senator from Tennessee andthe father of former vice president Al Gore.In 2009, Badger was appointed to chair the Kennedy Memorial Trust, which administers thememorial to President Kennedy at Runnymede and a scholarship program that sends Britishgraduate students to Harvard and MIT. The memorial and the scholarships were funded bydonations from the British public as a tribute to President Kennedy.In 2011 the British foreign secretary appointed Badger to oversee the transfer of the migratedcolonial archive from the Foreign and Commonwealth Oflice to the National Archives.The existence of this archive of files sent to London by British colonial governments beforeindependence had been kept secret for 50 years.Badger, who has served multiple terms on the University Council at Cambridge, also led theuniversity’s Colleges Committee and Cambridge Assessment. He chaired a search committeein 2002 that led to the nomination of Yale Provost Alison Richard as the first “outsider” to leadCambridge.

Hayden WhiteHonorari/ Degree Recipient — Doctor ofHumane Letters

Hayden White is a literary critic and historical theorist whose nameappears on a landmark California Supreme Court case as well as his manybooks. At age 85, he has only recently retired from teaching as a professorof comparative literature at Stanford University. He is professor emeritus ofthe history of consciousness at the University of California at Santa Cruz. IIn works such as Metahistory: The Historical Imagination in NineteenthCentury Europe, White has argued that literary and historical writing sharea reliance on storytelling form, meaning that no history can be consideredcompletely objective or scientific. However, he also holds that this relianceon the narrative structure allows history to be meaningful. His latestvolume, titled The Practical Past, will be released in 2014.Born in Tennessee, White grew up in Detroit during the Depression. He earned an undergraduatedegree in history from Wayne State University and completed his doctorate at the Universityof Michigan. He spent two years in Italy in the 19505 on a Fulbright Fellowship completing hisdissertation research on medieval church history.White has also taught at Wayne State, the University of Rochester, UCLA and WesleyanUniversity. He has received grants, fellowships and awards from the National Endowment forthe Humanities, Guggenheim Foundation and many other prestigious organizations. He heldresidential fellowships at Cornell, Wesleyan, the Harvard Center for Renaissance Studies inFlorence, Stanford, the American Academy in Berlin and the University of Bologna, Italy.Perhaps his proudest accomplishment is having served as plaintiff in a class-action civil rightslawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department during the Vietnam era. In 1973 whilea history professor at UCLA, White brought suit against the chief of police, alleging covertintelligence gathering tactics that included having officers register as students, take notes onanti-Vietnam class discussions and make police reports based on the discussions. The CaliforniaSupreme Court issued a unanimous decision in White’s favor in 1975. The case, White versusDavis, established limits on police surveillance of political activity in California, barring it in theabsence of reasonable suspicion of a crime.

White’s teaching philosophy holds that the aim of education should be to help young people thinktheir own thoughts and speak in their own voices, rather than fit themselves into pre—establishedpatterns of behavior and belief prescribed by society, the business world or the legal establishment.He is married to Margaret Brose, professor emerita of literature at the University of California atSanta Cruz.

UNIVERSITY MACE

The NC State University Mace is carried by the chief faculty marshal, a position held by the chair of thefaculty. The academic mace, derived from a medieval weapon, represents the need to protect and nurturethe fragile search for knowledge. The NC State University Mace has been specifically designed for thiscommunity. Each aspect of the mace represents an important characteristic of the university.When freestanding, the mace is supported in a base of North Carolina stone representing the foundationof knowledge and the dependence of this academic community on the support of the people. At thebase of the mace is a brass ring with the names of individuals who have held the position of chancellor,indicating the contribution of generations of academic leaders to the formation and maturation of NCState University.The long lower fluted handle is the primary means by which the mace is grasped, representing theresponsibility for the stewardship of knowledge. The shorter fluted, upper handle is the primary means bywhich direction is shown, and therefore represents the responsibility for guardianship. A block embeddedwith the seal of the university on four faces represents the university community and its charge to reachout in all directions. At the top of the mace is a geometric progression of layers representing the continualexperimentation and testing of knowledge within the NC State academic community. At the very top ofthe mace is a bronze prow symbolizing the continual exploration that energizes our communityThe mace is fashioned from burled walnut recovered from a North Carolina tree felled in a storm,emphasizing the need to make wise use of resources even in difficult circumstances. The wood is a giftof the Jordan family, representing the importance of the generosity of the people of North Carolina tothe university. The wood is complemented by bronze and silver fittings emphasizing the precious natureof the academic experience in society. During the course of fabrication, an error was made. After muchdiscussion, the design team decided to make the revisions necessary to correct the error rather thanrefabricate the flawed component. This adjustment, diflicult to identify, represents the valuable lessonslearned from failure as an essential component of the university experience.The mace was designed and fabricated by a team that included College of Design DeanMarvin I. Malecha, Chris Jordan (1975, Product Design), Jack Lancaster and Jim Dean (1983, ProductDesign) in the College of Design Materials Laboratory.

UNIVERSITY MEDALLIONThe NC State University Medallion is worn by the Chancellor for ceremonial occasions such as commencement,convocations and installations.It is similar to the University Mace. Both come from ceremonies of the Middle Ages, during which time the modernuniversity developed. Today, universities create medallions to commemorate special events, the contributions ofexceptional individuals and recognition of those in positions of responsibility.The NC State Medallion is designed with various symbols that describe characteristics of the university. The designfeatures two circles, one small and one large on opposite ends of the necklace, representing the diverse nature ofthe academic community. The large circle, which joins the chain, is inscribed with the university’s year of founding(1887) as a tribute to the vision of the founders. The necklace also consists of etched metal plates, chained togetherin a whole, signifying the many voices that comprise the NC State community. The medallion hangs from thenecklace and features the NC State seal, a representation of the responsibility and authority of the Chancellor.The necklace and medallion are made out of customized gold-plated brass, a strong material that represents NC Statepride and the wealth of knowledge within the university.Mary Ann Scherr was the first to design the medallion and necklace. It was redesigned by a team that includedCollege of Design Dean Marvin I. Malecha, Chris Jordan (1975, Product Design), Iack Lancaster and Sarah Tector.

ACADEMIC COSTUMEAcademic gowns represent a tradition handed down from the universities of the Middle Ages. Universities were founded bythe church and students, being clerics, were obliged to wear the prescribed gowns at all times. Round caps later became squaremortarboards. The hoods, originally cowls attached to the gowns, could be slipped over the head for warmth.Many European universities have distinctive caps and gowns dilferent from those commonly used in this country. Some of thegowns are brightly colored and some are embellished with fur. A number ofthese may be noted in the procession.Traditionally, the color for academic gowns in the United States is black. However, many institutions have chosen to use theirschool color for undergraduate robes as is evidenced by the Wolfpack red you are seeing today. The bachelor’s gown is worn closed,the master‘s and doctor’s may be worn open or closed. The shape ofthe sleeve is the distinguishing mark of the gown: bachelor’shave long pointed sleeves; master’s are oblong, square cut in the back with an are cut away in front; doctors are bell shaped.The tassels for the PhD. degree are gold, and those for other graduate and professional degrees may correspond to the trimmingson the hoods. Ofall the components of the academic costume, the hood bears the heaviest symbolic burden. The hood must makeclear the level of the degree, the faculty in which it was given, and the institution that awarded it. The level of the degree is shownby the size of the hood, the width of the velvet trimming, and in the case of doctors, by the shape. The bachelor’s, master’s anddoctor’s hoods are three feet, three and one half feet, and four feet long, respectively. The velvet trimming in the same order is two,three, and five inches and extends all around the hood on the exposed edge. This same trimming identifies the faculty in which thedegree was awarded. For each faculty there is a corresponding color; so a glance at the trimming is all that is needed to identify thefaculty.The tassel for master’s candidates corresponds to the following colors: Agriculture, maize; Architecture and Art, brown; Science,golden yellow; Economics, copper; Education, light blue; Engineering, orange; Forestry, russet; Physical Education, sage green;Religion, scarlet; Speech, silver gray; Veterinary Medicine, gray; Textiles, wine red; Anthropology, History, Languages, Literature,Philosophy, Political Science and Sociology are all dark blue.
