Quotes ... BLUE .. . z to a .. . BLUE ... s's ... BLUE ... devils ... Upon opening the 2001 ROHIAN, one may think it seems like any other yearbook. But is it? Journalistic rules were tested to help create a truly unique memory book. The theme "TaNgLeD uP iN bluE" has been carried throughout the book starting with "tangling" the page numbers in the BLUE folio art, mingling key words with BLUE to start each story, and beginning and ending each headline with the "tangled" letterS. Sticking with the chaotic 'look, SuBhEaDIInEs used alternating upper and lower case letters; the alphabetical order was reversed; and introduction, conclusion, and division pages used three small pictures across the bottom. Chris even used a I ittle twist to modernize the devil mascot on the cover. This year's staff with its "intermingled" personalities deserves credit for its creativity. The 2001 ROHIAN has captured and tangled many memories for all Blue Devils to remember for years to come. -Kate, Matt, and Chris

Hoping they will hit their next move, the pompon squad entertams the football fans .

Beginning ... BLUE ... career ... BLUE ... time ... BLUE ... ending ... Four of Virginia's mentors will leave with the Class of 2001. Mr. Schoeb was the superintendent of lSD #706 for the past seven years, overseeing transportation, curriculum, and finances. Mr. Moeller spent the past thirty-four years teaching English and reminding students that "95% of success in life is showing up for the job." Mr. Jarvinen brought his infamous Tuesday tests to his math classes for thirty-four years as well. Mrs. Emery describes herself as the "go to girl" in the Activities' Office for the past twenty-one years, doing everything from equipment orders to student awards. All of them enjoyed their time helping to create Blue Devil memories, and for their years of hard work, the 2001 ROHIAN is dedicated to them.

Flares ... BLUE ... cell phones ... BLUE ... silvers ... BLUE ... tat-toos .. . As people walked through the hails of Virginia Secondary School during the school year, they saw many different students carrying their own unique style. Whether they were wearing Abercrombie and Fitch, Ecko, Old Navy, Independent, Hurley, American Eagle, Roxy, or Playboy, they all looked good. Each person pulled off outfits of different brands, creating an abundance of up-to-date fashion. If one took a look in the homes, one would have found P.S2's, DVD players, MP3's, the internet, burnt CO's, and digital everything representing all the modern toys . Furthermore, a bounty of body art could be seen on students who headed over to Lonny's for a tattoo or a piercing. Overall, the year was packed full of creativity.

Diplomas ... BLUE ... memories .. . BLUE ... future .. . BLUE ... graduation ... The Class of 2001 lived their last high school year to the fullest. They were captains of varsity sports, presidents of clubs, and rulers of the school. Some chose the PSEO route, while others braved the classrooms of Mr. Roubinek, Mr. Moeller, and 'The Turk". Although excited to graduate and "to get out of this place", the seniors were also sad to have to go their separate ways. Future plans may have occupied much of their daily routine, but they still made time for athletics, dances, jobs, and (most importantly?) schoolwork. As they worked hard during two centuries to be able to graduate, these teenagers experienced a millennium of irreplaceable moments. Even the worst of times made the best of memories.

Every girl dressed in a beautiful gown, and the men dressed in sexy tuxes ready to begin the festivities at the all new afternoon Grand March in the gym. After the presentations, almost everyone went out to dinner and then returned to the multipurpose room for the 8:30 P.M. dance. Soon the couples were "Lost in Paradise" among the beautiful colors of green, purple, and blue in the jungle-like scene as Sounds Alive played three hours of music including the theme song "Amazed" by Lonestar. Football ... BLUE ... tug of war ... BLUE .. . king ... BLUE ... queen ... In October, spirits were high as the Virginia students celebrated their fall homecoming. Students wore their pajamas to school, and they even squeezed into their leather pants on both Biker Day and Britney Spears Day. The noontime activities led the Blue Devils to compose raps and to impersonate their favorite actors. Thursday's coronation allowed the royal court to reign over more games but no bonfire. Then Friday brought carnations, the pep fest, the parade, and a dance at the Miners. Although the football team suffered a loss, Virginians celebrated a week of fun sponsored by the Student Council and Mrs. Waller. Homecoming lasted only a week, but the memories will be with the students for a lifetime.

Virginia's foreign exchange students Ellen, Simon, and Tuomas came from afar in order to expand their knowledge by studying abroad. Their year began with exciting but positive experiences. Simon Sedlmeier spent much of his time enjoying the excitement of school band in America . Tuomas Laihanen scored his first goal in hockey as a Blue Devil, and Ellen Kirsten passed her time cheering on the boys' teams in football and hockey. Every member of the Vir-ginia administration, faculty, and staff worked diligently to keep the school running smoothly. The administrators and Mr. Kehoe found unique ways to work around budget cuts. Mrs. Carlson and Mrs. Byrne issued yellow absence cards while Mr. Krebsbach signed detention slips. Cafeteria workers enriched the students' diets as bus drivers transported kids safely. Custodians cleaned slippery, bolognafilled halls and, of course, teachers instilled knowledge into their students, broadening some horizons. New faces seen included counselor Paula Larson, artist Heather Serfling, nurse Karen Hunt, and supervisor Cathy Cremers. These wonderful adults ensured that 2000-2001 was a great year.

ROTC also learned about government - the military branch. Not only did they provide a color guard for home sporting events, but Sergeant Esala, the new adviser, made sure they earned their uniforms. Camp-outs, competitions, and community projects were just a few of their many assignments. Both the Project 120 and the ROTC students enjoyed positive and motivational activities.

The diversity of the staff made it evident that many different groups of students and ideas would be included in the yearbook. Senior captains Gretchen Linstrom berg and Kristine Engman along with junior captain Lindsay Jorgensen led the seven new members plus the returning veterans. Cultures ... BLUE ... activities ... BLUE ... tours ... BLUE ... crafts . . . The Anishinaabe Club met after school and was open to all students in grades 7-12 who were interested. Under the guidance of Mrs. Pearsall and Mrs. Hafdahl, these students learned things like the meaning of the word "Anishinaabe, " which means "the original people" in Ojibwa. They also learned about the Native American culture through various activities such as visiting the Nett Lake wild rice camp, a maple sugar camp, the Mille Lacs Museum, and attending powwows throughout the year. Their in-school projects included key chains, paintings, beaded necklaces, pottery, and medicine pouches. The goal for the Anishinaabe Club was to educate students about the diverse culture and history of the Native Americans.

Cheer ... BLUE ... spirit ... BLUE ... chants ... BLUE ... smiles ... Showing enthusiasm and strength , the cheerleaders helped motivate both teams and fans alike. With the help of Miss Phillips, the football squad cheered the boys all the way to the 7 MM Sea Range Conference championship. The hockey squad led by Candy Berens showed their skating spirit at every cold game. The basketball squad also under Miss Phillips wowed the crowds with their amazing stunts. The newlyformed seventh and eighth grade squads were taught by perfectionists Jamie Mayer and Sandra Wallin. The blue and white cheerleaders started their year midAugust at a four-day summer camp where they learned new stunts, cheers, and chants. They returned to school with spirit that carried them through the entire year.

Paint . . . BLUE . . . sculptures ... BLUE ... masterpieces .. . BLUE ... canvas ... The art club gained many new members and tackled many new projects. They spent over $1 ,000 of fundraising money for frames and plexiglass to display student artwork. In support of the 2000 Presidential elections, some art students also ambitiously created voting slogans with chalk in front of the school. Other art students painted slogans in the boys' basketball locker rooms while some artists painted murals in the hallways and the cafeteria. Furthermore, the president Kristen Edens and vice president Jennifer Skubic organized the seventh and eighth grade semi-formal Valentine's Dance. Finally, a few really ambitious students planned a trip to Italy for the summer to further expand their knowledge of art.

Notes .. . BLUE ... vibrato .. . BLUE .. . soloists ... BLUE ... hymns ... Under the direction of Mr. Groves, the A Cappella Choir, made up of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, maintained a respectable reputation. During the year, the singers performed three major concerts: winter, pops, and spring. Fundraising was also an important part for the fourth hour songsters with the boxes of M & M's, the annual fruit sales, and the raffle tickets. All of the money was put towards their tour of Chicago, where they sang at a local high school, a church, and the Baha'i House of Worship. The success of the choir would not have been accomplished without the help of the officers, Ryan Kuss, Gina DeBreto, Kurt Koski, and Timothy Thompson. Without a sour note, it was a wonderful year filled with harmony.

Mats ... BLUE ... tough ... BLUE ... holds ... BLUE ... pins ... Pin-ning and avoiding getting pinned was the name of the game for the Virginia area wrestlers this year. Having a record of 12-12, this team won when it mattered . Led by coaches Roger Nelson, Dennis Benz, Dave Stewart, and captains Dustin Benz and Matt Holkko, Virginia hosted the team regions. They then traveled to Anoka for the individual competition. Even though only one person per weight class was allowed, Virginia hoped to send four or five wrestlers to state such as Dustin Benz, Dan Kinler, Matt Holkko, and Bo Schallert. Unfortunately , only 189-pounder Dustin and heavyweight Dan, who was the region champ, went on to state where Dustin captured a third place medal. All of the wrestlers had an enjoyable season overall .

Snow ... BLUE ... trails ... BLUE ... poles ... BLUE ... racing ... The snow was a huge inspiration for the skiers this year, maybe because it was actually real. It allowed the Virginia Nordic ski team led by senior captains Melissa Kleinschmidt, Krista Banaszak, and Angela Royseth to place within the top three at the Ely Invitational. The Nordic ski team practiced in the dead of winter working on skating and classic, which are two forms of cross country skiing. The team spent two nights in Bemidji and even puff painted t-shirts for fun. Coaches Ben Croft and Jack Jefferies had enough to be proud of, but sending Dave Holien and Ashley Loe to the state tournament added to their lists. Whether they won or lost their races, the Nordic skiers had the chance to make a few great snow angels.

Not only were they great competitors, but they received their highest score in fifteen years! The strong, experienced coaching staff of Gwyn Roos, Kari Ohren, Bob Olivanti, and former teammate Sarah Stellmach pushed the girls to their best. Even though it was hard work , captains Sarah LeMoine, Jendra Fiskari, and senior Adrianne Carlson taught the girls to smile through it all. Racquets ... BLUE ... deuce ... BLUE ... coaches ... BLUE ... love ... The Virginia girls' tennis team had, yet again, an outstanding season. They soared through their regular season matches and came out with an undefeated record, although they were not able to improve their second place region standings. The eight seniors, Ashley Coughlin, Andrea Podpeskar, Sarah Ralston, Amber Erickson, Angie Harrison, Kristen Anderson, Kelly Biondich, and Brittany Harvey, made up the first eight positions on the team . These girls pushed for team unity and accomplished it by organizing sleepovers, pancake breakfasts at Prittinen's house, and puff painting at Ralston's. Once again the tennis team survived Coach Gunderson's conditioning on the courts and his driving methods on early morning road trips.

The ladies had some interesting times like when the seniors pulled the annual prank on Mr. Hafdahl and when the team gathered at Missy's house for spaghetti. Their season was also filled with proud times in the pool: beating Hibbing in their dual meet, winning the section meet for the third year running, and sending nine girls to the state meet in November. These moments will never be forgotten by Coaches Hafdahl , Gams, Baumann, and Stevens or captains Nicole Pagliaccetti and Gretchen Linstromberg, who really helped define this year's success .

Gloves ... BLUE ... bats ... BLUE ... final four ... BLUE ... runs ... When fans hear the word spectacular, immediately they should think of the Virginia girls softball team. After just one season under new coaches Gary Cornell and Rich Dillon, the Blue Devils turned into "'the team to beat." Not only did they have a blast defeating their opponents on the field, but they had a great time at all of their team-bonding parties. They had many good reasons for celebrating, starting with an exceptional record of 18-4. Other highlights included winning the Iron Range Conference (IRC) Tournament, defeating rival Duluth Central, and advancing to the final four tournament. Although they did not advance to state, most of these batting girls will return, so hopes are high going into next season.

The girls, under coaches Heather Goehring and Jordan Moe, were able to pull off some big wins against Pequot Lakes, Moose Lake, Greenway, and International Falls. Once they started to play together, the girls proved they could defeat almost anybody. However they came up just a bit short when it counted. Beginning in March, the guys practiced at the southside courts, battling the tennis balls and the weather. Knowing that the boys would be on their own during their sets, coaches Dave Gunderson, Bob Prittinen, and Spencer Hahne worked hard to teach them everything they could think of during practices. Seniors Jitesh Pattni, Dan Kearney, and Nick Hejda were an inspiration to their young teammates, proving that every player could work on his game and his tan at the same time. Although the team itself did not make it to the state tournament, it was able to send doubles' competitors Cory Nelson and Ben Weiss.

The boys' swimming and diving team braved the infamously cold pool practices each day for the entire three-month season, but the hard work paid off. Dreaming of success, coaches Joe Froehlingsdorf and Steve Korpela drove the boys to be their best, despite the mind-altering effects of the chlorine. To help insure the coaches' sanity and not overwhelm them, the boys chose to attend only one of the two daily practices. Although they won a majority of their meets, they unfortunately stood in the shadows of both Hibbing and Superior. With a tough schedule facing many double A teams ranked highly in the state, the team's proudest points were defeating EvelethGilbert 3-2 and catching up from a 1-4 deficit to beat Ely in overtime 8-7.
