3.Guangzhou at a Glance

Guangzhou is the capital city of Guangdong Province and its political, economic, scientific, educational and cultural center, located in the southeast of the province. Guangzhou sits at the northern rim of the Pearl River Delta, and adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao by the South China Sea. Guangzhou is also the transportation hub and trade port of South China, known as the South Gateway to China.

With ten districts and two county-level cities under its jurisdiction, Guangzhou covers a total area of 7,434 square kilometers and is home to over 10 million residents. Located in the sub-tropical region with an average annual temperature between 20 and 22 oC, Guangzhou enjoys ample rainfall that contributes to its mesmerizing landscape featuring extensive coverage of green verdures and flowers in full bloom all the year round. As such, Guangzhou enjoys the reputation of “the City of Flowers”.

As a famous cultural city with a history of over 2,200 years, Guangzhou was the starting point of the famed Marine Silk Road. It has long been one of the most important ports of the world since 1,000 years ago. Guangzhou boasts a number of cultural heritage sites. Most notable ones include Nanyue King Tomb, Guangxiao Temple, Liurong Temple and Huaisheng Temple, all of which have a history of over 1,000 years. The Nanyue Kingdom Palace has been twice listed as one of the “top ten national archeological discoveries”.

Guangzhou is the center of foreign trade in South China. Since 1957, China Import and Export Fairs (also known as the Canton Fair) has been held in Guangzhou, with a spring session and an autumn session each year. Guangzhou ranks the 3rd among cities in mainland China in terms of economy.

In 2010, Guangzhou successfully hosted the 16th Asian Games and Asian Para Games, achieving the target of “making both Games successful” and adding a new chapter to the history of the Asian Games.

By now, Guangzhou has established sister city relations with 31 cities, including Fukuoka, Los Angles, Manila, Vancouver, Sydney, Bari, Lyon, Frankfurt, Auckland, Gwangju, Linkoping, Durban, Bristol, Yekaterinburg, Arequipa, Surabaya, Vilnius, Birmingham, Hambantota Region, Recife, Tampere, Bangkok, Buenos Aires, Dubai, Kuwait City. In addition, Guangzhou has established friendship city relations with 17 cities in the world.

4.Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation

Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation (Guangzhou Award) is co-founded by the City of Guangzhou, the World Association of the Major Metropolises (Metropolis), a n d U n i t e d C i t i e s a n d L o c a l Governments (UCLG), with the aim of promoting the sharing of urban innovation experiences, recognizing the successful practices of cities and local governments on urban innovation, and advocating scientific approach to urban innovation, thus pushing forward the comprehensive, harmonious and sustainable development of cities around the world. Mr. Kadir Topbaş, President of UCLG and Mayor of Istanbul, called this award “the Nobel Prize of UCLG”.

The Guangzhou Award i s he ld biennially and its first edition received a total of 255 initiatives of application from 153 cities of 56 countries and regions throughout the world.

The Guangzhou Award i s an impor t an t a t t emp t f o r sha r i ng innovation experience among global cities. It is vitally important for the promotion of win-win cooperation between cities and local governments, for the cities’ participation in global

management in the international platform in terms of city diplomacy, and for Guangzhou to further its new urbanization development by learning innovative experiences of the leading cities of the world.

Launch of the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation

Logo The logo of Guangzhou Award is formed by two Chinese characters of “ 广 ”and“ 州 ”, and shapes like a skyscraper. With the vivid color of blue making its main tone, the logo is simple and concise with the charm of the times. The main structure shapes like the stairs, transmitting the sense of progressiveness and innovation.

Trophy The design of the trophy for Guangzhou Award is based on the structure of logo, with metal as the major material and a base in black. The frontal structure shapes like a skyscraper by two Chinese characters of “ 广 州 ”. Simple but unique, it highlights the nature of innovation. The trophy will be a symbol of honor and reward for all the winners, with congratulations and best wishes to all the winning cities.

Slogan The Chinese slogan of Guangzhou Award was finalized as “ 创新成就未来 ”, which literally means “Innovation Leads to the Future”. It highlights Guangzhou’s efforts in pushing forward international collaboration through innovation. The English slogan “So Dreams Come True” expresses the best wishes dedicated by Guangzhou Award to urban innovation and a better future, being the shared dream of humanity.

• Most hotels in downtown Guangzhou are approximately 30 minutes from the Guangzhou Railway Station. It’s advisable to check out of your hotel three hours before your train journey.

• It is also possible to take a taxi or the airport express line. Shuttle buses on Airport Express Line 5 operate between the airport and the Dong Fang Hotel.

• As a courtesy, expedited customs clearance service will be provided for you upon your arrival and departure at the Baiyun International Airport. You will receive the same service upon your departure.

CurrencyThe Renminbi (yuan) is the official currency in China. The airport, hotels and major shopping centers have money change service. Most department stores and hotels accept credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and JCB.

Time China spans five time zones but the entire country follows the Beijing Time, which is eight hours ahead of the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+8).

Electricity Electricity in China is AC 222V and 50Hz. Hotel rooms are equipped with two- and three-phase electrical outlets. The three-phase outlets are of the MY-2204 type.

Weather Guangzhou is located in the southern tropical zone and has a typical monsoon marine climate. In November, Guangzhou has an average temperature of 20oC (68 oF).

TipsIn China, tips are not mandatory. At anytime, it is up to the participant to decide whether to give a tip or not.

Public Transportation Taxi fares in Guangzhou are metered and start at RMB 10 for the first 2.5km and increase by RMB 2.6 for each additional kilometer. Taxis operate 24 hours a day and can be hailed down in the street or booked by dialing 96900.

The metro is one of the most reliable, comfortable and convenient means of transportation in Guangzhou. The extensive metro network currently has eight lines in operation, with fares ranging from RMB 2 to RMB 14. Service is from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. The nearest metro station is the Yuexiu Park Station, from where the train can take you to the railway station, the Chen Clan Academy, the Tee Mall, and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.

•Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family/ Chen Clan Academy

Chen is a very popular family name in China. This ancestral hall is set up by most of the Chen people in Guangdong province for worship of their ancestors. At that time, the temple is where the children of the Chen families studied to prepare for imperial examinations, so the building also serves as the Chen Clan Academy. Construction of the Chen Clan Academy began in 1888 and finished in 1894.

Because of its beautiful scenery with a number of river branches and luxuriant Lychee trees, it was turned into a Royal Garden and a summer resort. The decline of Lychee Wan started in the 40s of the 20th century, the streams and river branches were seriously polluted. In 1999, the government of Liwan District put forward a plan to restore Lychee Wan Chung. By October 2010, the huge project of its restoration was completed.

•Flower City Square

The Square, at the centre of Zhujiang New Town, serves as the new axis to the city, with a planned area of 560,000 square meters and a construction area of about 500,000 square metres. It is the largest comprehensive underground project ever to be completed in Guangzhou. Around the Square it is planned to be built 39 buildings, with 8 already having been completed, with 28 under construction and the 3 remaining at planning stage.

•Canton Tower

As the tallest tower in the world, the 600-meter-high Guangzhou New TV Tower and Sightseeing Tower locates in the south bank of Pearl River. Completed in September 2009, it was put into use during the 2010 Asian Games. As a symbolic construction of Guangzhou, it has improved the city image of Guangzhou as a 21st century international city, and it already Guangzhou’s new “landmark”.

Fanghe Community is the first affordable housing community project in Guangzhou that uses energy saving technology wi th an emphasis on the harmonious relationship between man and nature. Occupying a land area of 110,000 square meters, the total construction space is 470,000 square meters. Fanghe Community envisages four main functions-housing, education, commerce and recreation. The community was awarded Guangzhou Energy-Saving Model Project in 2009 and enlisted as Green Construction Model Project by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China.
