• The decentralization of power was the ideology we took as a part of this measure. We

formed a dozen committees, assigned group leaders and in addition to that a councillor

were appointed from the student community to distribute the responsibilities equally

• Inviting colleges within and outside the city, connecting sponsors, sound and lighting,

hospitality, stage and auditorium decoration, the arrangement of the guests and

documentation of such activities were taken care of the student body

• The program committee decided the dates of Infocus at the beginning and classified the

competition category into four. The categories were Short films, Documentary, PSM and

Ad Mission

• The programme gained a wonderful sponsorship and some valuable facilities from

organizations such as I-Mantra – title sponsor, Lazzaria, YoGrad, Hotel Alankrita, to name

a few

• The invitation committee directly invited more than 3 dozen colleges within the city of

Hyderabad and more than a hundred colleges outside through emails. So we got a strong

participation of more than three dozen entries in various categories

• The scrutinizing committee arranged the jury members to analyze the competition entries

and they have selected some exceptional films. Prizes will be distributed at the valedictory

function for those

• The efforts of the hospitality team were outstanding as they have offered a fabulous service

to all our guests

• The media committee proved their quality and talent by capturing each and every activity

of Infocus

The names of the committee heads:

Sam Kamaleshan, (Student Councillor), Vedika and Martin (Sponsorship Committee), Sreya

Department of Mass Communication

Report for the Academic Year 2016-2017

LenZcape provides a platform to students for showcasing their photography skills.

Thousands of flash, sounds of camera clicking, bundles of talent, hundreds of photos, loads of

entertainment- is precisely how the World Photography Day was celebrated by Mass

Communication students of Loyola Academy of Degree & PG College.

‘Lenzcape’ fest, which was held on 19th August, 2016 comprised a photography competition and

an exhibition on the theme of “Sounds of Earth”. Students enthusiastically participated in the event

and there were more than 500 photos which were put up for display. The event started with the

dignitaries and guests lighting up the lamp.

After that, Chief Guest and judge for the competition Mr. Aravind Chenji, one of India’s top notch

photographers, shared his thoughts and enlightened the students. Prof. K. Stevenson, HoD,

Communication and Journalism department of Osmania University, encouraged the students to

bring their hidden talents to the fore. Among those who graced the event were Rev.Fr. Casimir SJ,

Principal of Loyola Academy, Rev.Fr. Anil Kumar, Vice-Principal and Rev. Fr. Thainese,

Correspondent of Loyola Academy.

Unlike any other fests, ‘Lenzcape’ had a theme ‘Sounds of Earth’, which focused on the love

showered by mother earth on mankind and how we are destroying the nature. A photo-booth had

been arranged with a forest backdrop, which depicted the theme and many students clicked pictures

at the booth.

In the afternoon, Mass Communication students gripped the viewers with their Rap and dance

performances. After that, the winners of the competition were announced and Rev. Fr. Shailendra

Boora appreciated their work with prize money and certificates. Later, Akhil Bhaneswar proposed

the vote of thanks and the event successfully came to an end with the singing of the National

Anthem.

It was an educative journey for the photography students along with a mix of fun and

entertainment.

Classes on Press and Media Laws in India :

Industry exposure for students has always been the utmost important element for the department

of mass communication. Keeping this in mind, the department organized a series of lectures on

the subject of ‘Press as Fourth Estate’ and ‘Media laws’ Nikita Mehta, a reporter from Namste

Telangana and a Post Graduate from Hyderbad Central University handled both the core subjects

in the first semester of the academic year 2016-17. It was a fruitful experience for the students.

Parent - Teacher – Student Meeting – 21 August 2016 :

The department of Mass Communication

conducted Parent - Teacher – Student Meeting

on 21 August 2016. The main purpose of the

meeting was to provide a common platform

for both teachers and parents and enable them

to enrich the students educational experience.

A variety of issues were discussed during the

interactive session of the parents and faculty

members with the main agenda of overall

development of the students.

EDITING SEMINAR BY DHARMENDRA KAKARALA

The editing seminar was held on 13th September, 2016 in Loyola Academy, Degree and PG

College. The session was started by a fellow student’s introduction of Mr. Darmendrakakarala and

his work. Mr. Dharmendrakakarala was born to Kakarala Ramesh Kumar & K Vasanta into a

renowned family in Eluru Andhra Pradesh. He obtained a degree in BA and left to persuade his

interest in film making and joined at Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute. A 2004 pass out

and worked as an associate editor for films Oka V Chitram (2005), Rakhee (2006), Lakshmi

Kalyanam (2006), Mysamma (2006), Adi Vishnu (2008), Mestry (2009) and Chandamama (2009).

He is presently working as an Indian Film Editor and works in mainstream Telugu cinema. He

started his work as an editor with film Prasthanam (2010) which was a huge success and brought

him tremendous recognition in industry. He later worked for film like LBW (2011), Dhada (2011),

Routine Love Story (2012), Back Bench Student (2013), MallelaTheeram Lo Sirimallepuvvu

(2013), BangaruKodipetta (2013), D for Dopidi (2013).

Chandamamakathalu (2014) which was edited by Dharmendra won the National Award for the

best feature film in Telugu. The students of Mass Communication had a fantastic learning

experience in this seminar. Mr. Dharmendra made it an interesting session by sharing his

knowledge and experience with students. He spoke about his college and professional life which

struck a chord with the students. Being a person who witnessed an evolution in editing technology,

Dharmendra was a speaker who enlightened them on working of both early and new age

equipment.

He also explained how the understanding of old technology was equally important and adds to

skills of an editor. He was generous in sharing all the knowledge he had acquired in years of

learning in just four hours of time. He was patient enough to share the rare footage of shoot and

show how editing actually happens in films.

The students were introduced to professional work style and the way editing works in feature films.

He indeed helped us in understanding editing in its right meaning and to attain exposure in film

editing. He interacted with students, cleared doubts and explained new concepts. At some points,

he convinced and even reversed our opinions on few concepts of editing. His critical perspective

of how the industry works and his life experiences enriched and broadened student’s knowledge.

He did share some of valuable material and suggested students on the kind of films to be watched.

This editing seminar was a value of time and the four hours shared with Mr. Dharmendra couldn’t

get any better. Editing is indeed an art which can be mastered through years of practice and

patience and we must agree Mr. Dharmendra Kakarala was a master of this art.

VISIT TO THE HINDU PRESS

The students of Mass Communication department of 1st and 2nd years had a pleasure of visiting

The Hindu Press at Uppal, Hyderabad. This visit was one of a kind experience for them. Mr.

Santosh Sir, Lecturer in Mass Communication accompanied the students during the visit.

Production and distribution of newspaper is a huge task and even slightest mistake in this can ruin

the reputation of the newspaper. The students learned about the usage of colors and printing

technology in a newspaper print. It included huge machines, intricate technology and smart human

moderators. This entire process of printing happens in the night hours to reach the daily target of

delivering morning newspapers to every door step of the city. The extensive use of machines

eliminates the probability of mistakes. It’s a house of mass production yet eco-friendly in nature.

The newspapers are also carefully assembled and transported to other areas, other than Hyderabad.

The students were given the liberty to walk around the press though by taking certain precautions

and examine the equipment. It marked a huge learning experience. The printing and distribution

are as most important as gathering of news in news production and learning about the time and

space settings of this has been enriching for media students.

It helped us to be empathetic and sensitive to understand the prime nature of news and logistics

that go into making of a daily.

2. The third year students from the department of Mass Communication conducted the 'Speak Up'

campaign under the topic titled PR on 22nd September 2018.

Purpose : It is as an attempt to make young people come out of their shell and be more open about the

problems they face. The speak up campaign was mainly aimed towards the upliftment and healing of all

those who are mentally and emotionally down or scarred. The main intention was to encourage people

affected by various forms of mental and emotional turmoil to come forth and speak up about the issues they

face, as modern science supports the age old idea of healing through sharing, it is important for young adults

to voice out their problems rather than surrendering to the depression that follows by keeping quiet.

Report : The students started the preparation for the campaign almost one month prior to the date of the

program. The first step in the preparation included coming up with logos and taglines for the campaign and

designing the same. Throughout the whole period of one month, the students designed and shot a number

of posters and videos. The students were divided into various committees such as content, cinematography,

editing etc. and work was allotted to them accordingly. It was the interest of the students that helped them

contribute great concepts for the videos and posters. All the content created had a unique way of presenting

the theme, speak up, to the audience. The students tried to make every element catchy and inspiring in order

for more people to understand the importance of what the whole idea of the campaign was. Everything that

was designed and created was uploaded on social media on a regular basis, this consisted mostly the

Facebook and Instagram pages of the campaign itself and also of the students participating. The videos and

posters received a lot of praise and helped gaining audience who became a part of the campaign on 22nd

September 2018.

Campaign- Morning session : The day started with introducing the campaign to the audience present in

the hall. The campaign was conducted in the PG Seminar Hall of Loyola Academy Degree and PG College,

Alwal. The host for the day did a great job by engaging the audience and making them curious about how

this campaign would be extremely beneficial for all of them individually. The videos also highlighted the

different aspects that restrain an individual from speaking up. Problems such as societal pressure, anxiety,

fear of judgement, peer pressure etc. were addressed. The session proceeded by showcasing the videos that

were shot during the course and explaining to the audience the idea behind each video. All of this helped

the audience to understand the nature of the campaign and what they would be gaining out of it at the end

of the day. Since everyone in the room were inspired to share their stories, the HOD and the lectures of the

department took the first step and addressed the gathering. It was absolutely galvanizing for the students to

listen to shocking incidents from the lives of their lecturers and understand how difficult life can get and

how every person equally has suffered at some point or the other. The lectures coming and speaking first

was a confidence booster for all the students to not feel uncomfortable and break the

Interactive session : This next session was indeed the most important part of the day; because it was purely

what the campaign was aiming for- providing the students a platform to speak up. All the people present

were divided into various groups and made to sit in circles, the groups were divided randomly and not on

the basis of who is comfortable with whom. It was nerve wracking for people to start telling their stories

but once it started there was no end.

Guest speech : The esteemed guest for the day was Dr. Vasupradha, a psychologist with expertise in

dealing with depression patients. Throughout her career she has had the opportunity to learn about different

aspects that affect mental health and that leave a person disturbed and it was very informative for the

audience to understand the scientific relevance of speaking out in order to release stress. She boldly touched

all the problems that are highly common amongst youngsters including relationships, drugs and alcohol

addiction. It was an eye opener for the students to understand how everything can be handled smoothly

without letting it ruin one's state of mind. Dr. Vasupradha portrayed all her concerns about young people

taking wrong decisions and how this can be avoided by taking the right advice at the right time.

Cultural performance : The students performed a non-verbal skit and a song near the kiosk of the college

canteen where people who were not part of the campaign also got to witness a glimpse of why opening up

about your problems is important in life. The mime act was told the story of different characters, all facing

problems pertaining to the youth like sexual abuse, body shaming, drug abuse and ragging, and how these

characters seek help and are desperate to be heard. The performance conveyed the message of speak up

very strongly, it made all the viewer’s understand that it's absolutely 'okay' to be stuck in a problem but 'not

okay' to be silent about it and not bring a change. Following the mime performance was a group song

presented by the band of the department of Mass Communication titled 'Just Speak Up'. The song was an

original composition of the students that left the audience.

Review : The students dived deep down their memory lanes and shared everything that used to, or still

does, makes them uncomfortable. They let the fear of judgment vanish and opened up in front of people

who were equally vulnerable. After the session everyone was relieved and delighted about how good of an

activity this could be and how it can help in releasing stress.

their theoretical classes they’ve tried to learn and imagine during this field visit. More than

their observation during the visit, it was more like a Q & A session for the students, as they

asked a plethora of questions to the employees they have found working near each block/

throughout the process of publication. Apart from gaining the labour knowledge students

gained huge knowledge on the technical aspects that’s involved in the printing process.

too. This field visit adds a feather to the curriculum vitae of the AMC’s as the Acumen

Connect made them write a case study to the question they asked for based on the field

visit and also provided the industrial visit certificate to them.

the play were – Work Pressure, Marital Rape and Domestic Violence (against both the female and male).

The story starts with a usual Indian Husband-Wife fight about being late. Slowly, it moves to the scene

between the boss and the main Procrastinator. The scene shows the amount of work burden the man faces.

The man, in frustration goes to a bar, expecting to find relief. He goes home drunk to which his wife gets

disgusted and irritated as he often comes home drunk. The wife finally decides to not let him remove his

frustration on her and beats up her husband when he tries to push her down. The next morning, when the

husband comes back to his senses, he tries to apologize to her. She then tries to push him away to which

the man’s ego gets hurt and he starts forcing himself on his wife, and uses that as a “Stress Reliever”. After

the incident when the wife calls her mother, her mother denies that to be “Rape” and names it as her

“Responsibility” to satisfy her husband”. The play ends with a song where both the man and the woman

are sitting still with no expression which represents their situation where they are left with no option but to

go through life as it comes to them.

Even today, there are so many cases of marital rape which fail to make it to the court. The reason behind it

is because there is still no law against marital rape. Not just that, there are also cases regarding domestic

violence on men, but it always fail to come to the notice of people. This is because in India people do not

want to talk about actual problems that are either underrated or are unacceptable by the society.

It took a lot of affords and patience to make this street play happen. The students of Mass Communication

are thankful to Principal Fr Dr P. Anthony SJ, Vice-Principal Fr D. V Balaswamy SJ, Head of the

Department (B.A Mass Communication) Mrs V. J Bharathi and the Dean of Student Activities, the Lecturer

in Value Education Mrs P.M. Mamatha Rani and the college management for giving us all the opportunity

EDUTAINMENT VISIT- NGO ACTIVITY- UG STUDENTS- MASS

COMMUNICATION DEPARTMENT- LOYOLA ACADEMY- TRIBAL VILLAGE.

'BEYOND 103' is an initiative by the Department of Mass Communication, at Loyola Academy.

The batch 2017- 2020 as part of their Development Communication subjects were keen on

observing the rural area, so they’ve decided to observe the underdeveloped tribal area and in that

process took an oath to help them out in providing basic amenities. This activity happened on the

dates 25th September 2019 to 28th September 2019 at Bhadradri, Kothagudem.

“I used to work for Humans of Hyderabad, where they focus on the human stories and came

through a video on the tribal people of Bhadradri, Kothagudem on their social media page. I chose

this place as I know that HOH shows only factual information and thus we decided to focus them

and help them out”. – Hima Bindu, lecturer in Mass Communication.

So overall 27 students from this MC 2017- 20 batch have attended this camp, where 3 lecturers

(Ms. Hima Bindu, Mrs. Rakeshwari and Mr. Anees accompanied them). "I'm very happy with this

initiative, my team had done a great job and pretty sure that they came back with abundant love

and blessings", says V.J. Bharati, HoD Mass Communication.

We struggled for 3 months at a stretch in collecting funds, planned very carefully to implement

this and make it successful. With all the funds we’ve got, we purchased 10 Rice bags (25kgs each),

(100kgs each- Toordal, Moongdal & Red cowpeas), Stationery (Including books, Pencils, Scales,

Sharpeners, Erasers, Drawing books & Crayons), Two camping beds, Sports items (Kid’s football,

Cricket bat, Spinner), Medicines (Antibiotics and emergency medicines) and Clothes (all the age

groups). All this wouldn’t be possible without the support of V.J. Bharati (HoD), Fr. Anthony

Pothireddy (Principal), Fr. Bala Swamy (UG Vice-Principal), Loyola students, people who

provided huge monetary funds from overseas and everyone who is a part of this activity.

"This is for the very first time where students took an initiative, donated a lump sum funds and

stayed with us in these hamlets. They adjusted really well and made everyone in these hamlets

really happy. Everything they donated will be distributed among the habitats for children's midday

meals in their schools.", says Dr. Narender (The man who left Hyderabad and living in that tribal

area since 3yrs to help those people and takes care of their health).

This was absolutely an amazing experience for the students, lived very close to nature, completely

away from the digital world, understanding different psychological behaviors of the tribal people,

and observing their struggle which taught them a lot. They’re contented to help them and are in

love with the arrangements they provided us. They thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent there,

the delicious food they prepared with the amenities we provided, arranging a campfire which

accompanied the tribal dance on that night, and a beautiful shelter for us to stay. The respect they

gave us has got no words to even explain it. And the walks were even more beautiful where the

students got a chance to use the cell phone and cameras only for capturing the moments and

nothing else.
