Q.2 A) Read the following passage and answer the questions given below. (11)When Kim was born in 1951, his head was a third larger than normal, with an

encephalocele a blister into which part of his brain protruded - across the back of hishead. At the age of three blister retracted, pulling a nodule into Kim's cerebellum, destroying most of it. In 1983 he had an x-ray which showed that he had onesolid brain hemisphere, instead of two. A later scan showed that the right half of Kim'scerebellum had exploded into three pieces.

YHB - 9 Page 2

None of this explains Kim's abilities, but they explain his disabilities. He has severemotor deficiencies and needs help bathing and brushing his teeth.

"He dresses himself," explains Fran, "and I basically redress him becausehis shirt is on backwards."

After Kim's birth, doctors labelled Kim a "retard" and advised his parents toput him in a children's home. Instead his parents took him home and introducedhim to books. When, aged three, he asked his father what "confidential" meant,Fran jokingly told him to look it up in the dictionary. "He couldn't walk," says Fran,"so he put his head down and crawled over to the desk, pulled himself up andabout 30 seconds later said, 'I've found it'." At four and a half he had memorizedthe first eight volumes of an encyclopaedia set. Recently it was discovered that eachof his eyes can read a separate paperback page simultaneously, absorbing everyword in about ten seconds - and he never forgets it.

Today, because I am with him, his mind is on all things British. He spouts largesections of Shakespeare and Dickens at me and names the kings and queens. When I ask him if he knows who had the shortest reign and who the longest,he replies without hesitation : "Edward V was the shortest and Victoria lasted63 years, seven months and two days."

Questions :-1) When was Kim born? (1)2) What abnormalities Kim had? Explain. (2)3) How didi Kim's father discover his son's extraordinary abilities? Explain. (2)4) Do you think every physically challanged person possesses some extraordinary

qualities ? Why do you say so ? (2)5) Do as directed : (3)

Many plants have acquired adaptations to ensure that their flowers wouldbe cross pollinated. Many of these adaptations make use of the abiotic(non - living) and biotic (living) factors of the environment. These factors arereferred to as pollinating agents. The abiotic agents are wind and water. Thepollination by wind is called anemophily. It occurs in many trees and allgrasses including cereals like Jowar and maize. Aquatic plants produce theirflowers at the water surface. Pollen grains have tiny floats and are carriedby the water current to the stigma of the female flower. In some plants such asVallisneria the tiny male flowers themselves float at the surface. Such pollinationis called hydrophily. The biotic agencies include insects (entomophily)

YHB - 9 Page 3

e.g. Saliva birds (Cornitho phily) e.g. Butea. Salmalia and Bats (cheropterophily)e.g. Kigelia. Pollination by snails and slugs is called malacophily. There aremany other adaptations which do not depend on outside agencies.

Della's beautiful hair fell about her, rippling and shining like a cascade ofbrown waters. It reached below her knee and made itself almost a garment for her.And then she did it up again nervously and quickly. Once she faltered for a minuteand stood still while a tear or two splashed on the worn red carpet.

On went her old brown jacket; on went her old brown hat. With a whirl ofskirts and with the brilliant sparkle still in her eyes, she fluttered out of the doorand down the stairs to the street.

Where she stopped the sign read: "Mme. Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds."One flight up Della ran, and collected herself, panting. Madame, large, too white, chilly, hardly looked the 'Sofronie'.

"Will you buy my hair? "asked Della."I buy hair", said Madame. "Take your hat off and let's have a sight at the looks

of it".Down rippled the brown cascade.'Twenty dollars, "said Madame, lifting the mass with a practised hand."Give it to me quick," said Della.Oh, and the next two hours tripped by on rosy wings. Forget the hashed

metaphor. She was ransacking the stores for Jim's present.
