• On a home improve-ment kick? You’re not alone. Here’s a wall-papering tip from way back: If your wallpaper is applied with adhesive, add a few drops of food coloring to the paste. It will give it a slight tint that will not be visible when dried. Now you can be sure that the adhesive makes it all the way to the edge of the paper for best results!

Register RockWe are surrounded by so great a cloud
of witnesses. — Hebrews 12:1Today’s Scripture: Hebrews 11:32-40
Along the old Oregon Trail in Idaho there is a mark-er—a giant lava boulder known locally as Register Rock. It’s located in an area which was one of the favorite overnight camping areas for westbound im-migrants who traveled the trail in the 19th century. Travelers often inscribed their names on the rock as a memorial to their passage. Register Rock stands as a monument to their courage and tenacity. When I think of Register Rock, I think of other pilgrims who have passed by us on their journey. Hebrews 11 lists some of those hardy souls—Gide-on, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, and Samuel, to name a few. But there are other more recent pilgrims: my mother and father, my fi fth-grade Sunday school teacher Mrs. Lincoln, my youth leader John Richards, my mentors Ray Stedman and Howard Hendricks, and a host of others I could name. They may not have inscribed their names on rocks, but they’re written in my memory. The author of Hebrews reminds us to remember “pilgrims” who have gone before us, especially those “who have spoken the Word of God” to us and to consider “the outcome of their conduct” (Heb. 13:7). And, most important, he encourages us to follow their faith. By: David H. Roper

ERIN OWLSNOTARY
When it comes to reading The Bi-ble, I’m naturally drawn to the Book of Proverbs on a regular basis. I fi nd the wisdom contained in Proverbs is as applicable today as when it was written almost 3,000 years ago. Take for instance Proverbs 30:18-19(NIV). It states, “There are three things that are too amazing for me, four that I do not understand. The way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a young wom-an.” I have to admit, when I read those verses, one of the fi rst thoughts that comes to my mind is, “I completely agree, but what about…?” By that, I humbly mean my list of things that are too amazing for me personally is way more than three and when it comes to things that I do not understand, four doesn’t even scratch the surface. I fi nd I’m awed by things found in nature that either amaze me or I don’t under-stand on almost a daily basis. Some of those things are pretty simple and fairly common, but I still don’t get it. Take for instance, when it comes to dogs. We love our German Shepherd and like most dog owners, we treat him and talk to him like he’s just an-other member of the family, almost human. However, about once a year, for a reason that I do not understand, he feels compelled to remind us he’s still a dog by rolling in something that smells totally foul and downright repul-sive. Like most dogs, he typically rolls in it so the offensive substance is con-centrated around his neck and ears, and it’s rather comical how pleased and proud he is of his new fragrance. That is, until he comes back, we get a whiff of him, and he gets reprimanded for his indiscretion before getting a much-needed bath. Well, recently his internal clock must have told him, “I haven’t rolled in something disgust-ing in quite a while to get myself in trouble”. So, on Saturday night, July 25, I saw him fl op on the ground in the darkness and do that all too familiar side-to-side roll about 60-yards away in our backyard when I took him out one last time before bed. Now, we’ve been blessed, over the course of 20+ years living in our home, we’ve had very few skunk encounters. Maybe, it’s because the signifi cant populations of raccoons and opos-sums we see on a regular basis on our property don’t leave much room for skunks. Whatever the reason, we’ve averaged one skunk sighting about once every three years (I’m talking single digits over the past 22-years and I’m perfectly fi ne with that). Well, on
Outdoor OpportunitiesBy COL(Ret.) Grey D. Berrier IISome Things in Life Really Stink, Literally!
July 25, one must have passed through our place, left some of its essence for who knows why, and our dog felt com-pelled to roll in it. Now, back in the Fall of 1992 at our previous home in Armstrong County, we had a Golden Retriever who took a full blast from an adult skunk that I had to deal with and you could defi nitely smell her repug-nant phew from over 25-yards away. Fortunately, our German Shepherd didn’t smell nearly as bad, but he spent the night in the garage and received a much-needed bath on Sunday, July 26, before he was allowed to return to his “family dog” privileges. Well, you might have thought my brain would have registered the fact there was potentially a skunk now frequenting our area and I should be more vigilant. Nope, didn’t happen. The following Friday night, July 31, I was watering our garden just before dark and as usual, our German Shep-herd was lying nearby watching my back. I was just about fi nished when I caught the dog taking off in a fl ash, out of the corner of my eye. I immediately called him back vigorously, but within mere seconds he met up with a young skunk, got sprayed, and came running back sporting his new “Pepé Le Pew” fragrance. He made a few unsuccessful attempts to wipe the smell off on the ground before I herded him to his pen. I hosed him down thoroughly before he had the privilege of spending his fi rst entire night in his 10½-year life-time, out in the pen. Saturday morn-ing, August 1, it was outdoor bath time once again. Back in 1992, I used tomato juice on our golden Retriever to cut the smell. Now, after consulting the Inter-net, our German Shepherd initially got sprayed with hydrogen peroxide and then rinsed with water after 15-min-utes. Next, came a thorough spraying with distilled white vinegar, which was also left on for 15-minutes before rins-ing with the hose. Finally, he was rigor-ously lathered up with Dawn dish soap to complete his bath. Afterwards, he was completely skunk-free and once again allowed back in the house to re-turn to his rather privileged life. Hopefully, he’s gained the wisdom to leave skunks alone in the future and I’ve gained the good sense to take him to/from his pen on a leash whenever it’s dark. Some things in life really stink, quite literally, and skunk essence is one of them. That’s not found in Proverbs, but it is a fact I defi -nitely understand and I’m amazed that skunks have that olfactory defensive capability. God Bless, Be Safe, and Great Outdoors! ©WBB 2020

• Bright strips of tape can be a great safety addition to the edges of stairs. Even better is bright, textured, refl ec-tive tape for low-light areas, like basements or porch steps. The bright color makes the edges visible in daylight; the refl ection does the same at night. A bit of texture makes sure they’re not slippery. ©2020 King

Hammer Natural Prints With Garden Leaves--- Green leaves just don’t get the attention they deserve. Usually, we “ooh” and “aah” in the fall at the emerging splashy colors of crimson and golden leaves on trees and bushes. But there is infi nite variety in the green and the gray of those leaves on trees, vegetable plants and bushes that continually grow, shade and add a natural umbrella in gardens and parks in the hottest of summer days.Pick a handful of fresh leaves and sprouting greens from your trees, shrubs and vegetable garden, and look at them with your kids through a magnifying glass. Observe their intricate patterns and delicate design, and then print them onto fabric with a zany technique using a hammer from the toolbox and your child’s muscle and energy. First, collect the fresh green leaves. Ferns from an indoor fl oral bouquet also work well. Then, decide what you would like to print, such as a plain white or cream-colored cotton fabric T-shirt, an apron, potholder or library book bag. Cover a hard, fl at surface such as a picnic table or wooden breadboard with plain paper bags. Set the fabric to be printed on top. If using a T-shirt or tote bag, place a sheet of wax paper or cardboard inside the shirt or bag. Arrange a leaf or fern on the fabric (secure it in place with small pieces of masking tape, if you wish), and cover with a sheet of wax paper. Hammer over the wax-paper-covered leaf until its color has been absorbed into the fabric. It’s important that you hit every part of the leaf to release the natural pigments. Remove the leaf or fern and wax paper to reveal the natural image. Colors vary in intensity, so you may wish to test several varieties on a piece of scrap fabric fi rst. Repeat the process with additional leaves. Try it with a few fl owers, too, and see how the beautiful colors from nature appear. Label each print with the name of the tree, plant or fl ower using a permanent marker.Note: The natural pigments may eventually fade. Wash fabric in cold water.Extra Idea: You also may use paper instead of fabric to create lovely stationery, gift tags or bookmarks.© 2020 Donna Erickson. Distributed by King Features Synd.
Topped with sweet Italian sausage and two kinds of peppers, this homemade pizza is so delicious.
Flour1 pound pizza dough2 teaspoon olive oil2 small peppers (1 red and 1 orange)2 sweet Italian sausage links4 ounces part-skim mozzarella1/2 small red onion3 pepperoncini peppers
1. Heat grill to medium-high. Lightly dust a baking sheet with fl our. Working on a fl oured surface, shape the pizza dough into one 14-inch round and place on the prepared sheet. Brush the top with 1 teaspoon oil.2. Place the peppers and sausages (cut-side down) on the grill and cook, covered, for 3 minutes. Turn and grill, covered, until the sausages are cooked through and the peppers are tender, 2 to 3 minutes more. Transfer the sausages and peppers to a cut-ting board and slice.3. Transfer the pizza dough to the grill, oiled-side down, and cook, covered, until the top begins to bubble and the bottom is crisp, about 2 minutes. Brush the top of the dough with the remaining 1 teaspoon oil.4. Turn over, sprinkle the grilled side with half of the mozzarella, then the onion. Top with the pep-pers, sausage and pepperoncinis, then sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Grill, covered, until the bot-tom is golden brown and crisp, and the mozzarella has melted, about 3 minutes. Transfer to a cutting board and cut into pieces. Makes 4 servings.
TIP: To make this pizza indoors, split the dough in half and shape into two 8-inch rounds.© 2020 Hearst Communications, Inc.All rights reserved

• Lotion scent too strong? Purchase a pump bottle of unscent-ed lotion, and remove about a third to a small bottle or even a plastic zipper-top bag. Add your scented lotion, and mix well by shaking the bottle or stirring with a long stick. The scent will be diluted, and you can always add more scented lotion or top off with the excess unscented lotion.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why does my Great Dane pass so much noxious air? -- James K., Syracuse, New YorkDEAR JAMES: Hoo boy. Great Danes are notori-ous for passing gas. And because they’re big dogs, well, it’s impos-sible not to notice. Part of the reason is that they often are prone to digestive issues and can be sensitive to some varieties of dog food.Talk to your dog’s vet-erinarian about this, as he or she will have some suggestions for reduc-ing fl atulence. The No. 1 recommendation will be a change to a different brand of dog food. Try introducing the new food gradually, replac-ing part of its current food with the new brand and increasing the ratio of old to new. Note whether its gas symptoms diminish, or if there’s no change. Theories abound as to why Great Danes and other large breeds like Bull Mastiffs rip so much stinky air. Fermentation of digest-ing food in the large intestine is one. Dry dog foods with a lot of grain fi ller may make this worse. If your dog is fed table scraps, even occasionally, this could contribute to the problem, as human food tends to be higher in fat with lots of spices. Large breeds also are very susceptible to bloat, so stay aware of your dog’s physical condi-tion. When the stomach swells up with excess gas it can be very painful and put the dog at risk of gastric torsion, which requires immediate surgery. Labored breath-ing, excessive drooling, vomiting or an enlarged abdomen are among the symptoms of bloat. Take your dog to the emer-gency vet right away if you notice any of these symptoms. ©King Features
