Diocese of Worcester Office of the Bishop 49 Elm Street Worcester, Massachusetts 01609
October 26, 2020
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Welcome to our seventh annual gala celebration of the diocesan priesthood in the Diocese of Worcester – and our first VIRTUAL Celebrate Priesthood.
While the Coronavirus pandemic denies us the opportunity to share in fellowship tonight, we are nonetheless grateful for the gift of the priesthood in our lives and the opportunity to share our thoughts on social media.
We take this opportunity to celebrate the contributions that so many priests, both active and retired, have made to the Diocese of Worcester. Our priests are always there for us, in good times and in challenging times, including these most challenging pandemic times. By their example, they inspire us with a message of unending love that God extends to each of us through His Son, Jesus Christ. By their actions, their words and their commitment to the vocation of the priesthood, our priests have responded to a call to make God’s love manifest in our lives. We are transformed by their faithful service.
Proceeds from this evening’s event benefit the Priests’ Retirement Fund, along with bequests and gifts received during the past year designating this fund. On behalf of all those who worked diligently to bring this night to fruition, I thank all of you for your generosity and willingness to help us raise needed support for priests’ retirement care. I am confident that each of you joins with me in thanking our priests by providing for their care in their senior years with dignity.
Once again we are very grateful to our sponsors who are all listed in this program, along with the many advertisers and donors, some of whom made coupons available in this program book. I also wish to add my gratitude to those who made significant donations in memory of deceased priests or in honor of priests who still serve our parishioners. Their generosity is helping to make this virtual event a success.
Join with me in making this annual tradition a tribute to the love and devotion we all share for our priests. May we frequently and fervently raise our voices in prayerful gratitude to Almighty God for the gift of the priesthood.
With every prayerful best wish, I remain
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. McManus, S.T.D. Bishop of Worcester

THE ONGOING NEED IN THE priests’ retirement FUND
Have you ever faced the need to care for an elderly family member? You know first-hand
how costs can add up when dealing with medical bills, assistance in living and many other issues, even before facing skilled nursing home care!
In the Diocese of Worcester, the customary retirement age for diocesan clergy is 75 years of age. On average, there are 55 retired priests in our diocese who are cared for by our Diocese following many decades of service to the Catholic community in our parishes and other diocesan ministries.
For more than seven years in a row, the cost of care for retired priests exceeded available resources by hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. While a committee continues to work on reducing expenses without sacrificing quality of care, the need for additional funding sources will continue to outpace the current sources without the assistance of individuals like you through support of this annual event and/or through the Legacy of Hope Capital Campaign.
Many people have wondered how this initiative relates to the Retirement Fund for Religious Collection which has been taken up in the month of December for more than 30 years. That national collection is used exclusively to assist vowed religious communities (sisters, brothers and religious order priests) who face crippling retirement costs for the elderly and frail members of their communities. Canonically they operate their finances separately from the dioceses in which they served or are still serving.
Join us in Celebrating the Gift of Priesthood throughout the year!
The gift of the priesthood is more than a personal vocation to which each priest is called. It is a gift to the community of faith. We are never without the sacramental graces conferred on each of us, thanks to the presence of a priest.
We invite you to consider ways in which you can show gratitude for the priests who have made a difference in your life as we face the financial challenge of caring for our retired priests.
You are invited to make a gift to the Priests’ Retirement Fund at any time during the year to honor a priest who helped you or your family. Visit worcesterdiocese.org/celebrate-priesthood.
Consider making a Legacy Gift to the Retired Priests’ Fund in your estate planning so that you make a long-term difference in the care of our retired priests. Visit worcesterdiocese.plannedgiving.org for more information.

Seminarians Pay Tribute to Our Retired Priests
Priesthood: A Life Devoted to ServiceDeacon José Carvajal Most retired people are very proud of what they have ac-complished through their
careers and in their own lives. Some would claim that through their jobs, they were able to bring food to their families’ tables, and also to offer education of outstanding quality to their children. A few, how-ever, can claim their job was all about feeding people with a more spiritual kind of bread, the bread of the Eucharist, and the bread of the Gospel. Our retired
priests, in imitation of Christ, wanted to invest their whole lives to serve God’s people and lead hundreds to accomplish their salvation.
Every Christian is called to be, as St. Teresa of Calcutta states, faithful rather than successful. The presence of our retired priests shows us that remain-ing faithful to the Gospel means to configure one’s life with Christ in care, compassion, love, and service for others. The particular Church of Worcester rejoices and is grateful for the presence of these good and brave men who continue inspiring, with their testimony, the lives of young men preparing for the priesthood, as well as the hundreds of people they have touched through their dedicated and faithful ministry.
A True Spiritual FatherDeacon John Larochelle
The gift of the retired priests of our Diocese and their impact in all our lives over the years is something that can never be
understated. In my own life there have been many wonderful priests that have inspired and guided me
but one in particular has accompanied me on my faith journey since I was a young boy serving Mass for him. Fr. Ted Stachura has been not just a model of what a good and holy priest should be but for me he has been a true spiritual father. He has guided me by way of his good example, by his clear preach-ing and teaching, and, more than once, by his strong exhortation. I am now and will forever be grateful for the gift of him and his priesthood in my life.
A Tribute to the One who Baptized MeDeacon Lucas LaRoche
No one seeks to become a priest without first having been inspired by a priest. For all of us,
the first example above all is Jesus Christ, the Eternal High Priest and Good Shepherd, who laid down his life for his sheep. Beside this eternal example, how-ever, stand men of every kind who have laid down their lives to care for Christ’s sheepfold.
While each of us are the children of earthly parents, we are perhaps even moreso the children God; we’ve been raised to this dignity by baptism at the hands of a priest. As Paul said, “I became your father in Christ Jesus,” so these priests have become our father by raising us to a new and eternal life. To these priests we owe an insurmountable debt, for they’ve given us a heavenly inheritance which is our salvation.
To Father André Garìepy, who baptized me, and to all those priests who have labored quietly and tirelessly over the course of decades to make God known to us: Thank you.

O Jesus, eternal Priest, keep your priests within the shelter of Your Sacred Heart, where none may touch them. Keep unstained their anointed hands,
which daily touch Your Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips, daily purpled with Your Precious Blood.
Keep pure and unearthly their hearts, sealed with the sublime mark of the priesthood. Let Your Holy Love
surround them and shield them from the world’s contagion. Bless their labors with abundant fruit and may the souls to whom they minister be their joy and
consolation here and in heaven their beautiful everlasting crown. Amen

“The world looks to the priest, because it looks to Jesus! No one can see Christ; but everyone sees the priest, and through
him they wish to catch a glimpse of the Lord! Immense in the grandeur of the Lord! Immense in the grandeur and dignity
of the priest!” — Saint John Paul II
With gratitude “to each of these men for what they each contributed to our parish community out of their human and priestly talents, but each in his own time and his own way.”
