Chalrperson's Message Y"flrjbrDear Friends,

Warm Greetings from Team DraupadiTrustlAnother year moves ahead with suppoft of benefaclors,wellwishe6 and intelligent hard wo* ofourworkforce. Like every year this year too brought along itsc_hallenges and opportunilies and we all benofit€d from both. Believing lhat uncertainly is th€ onlycertainly, the Trust took in its stride many unoxpocted changes and learnt manya lessons aboutsomehomo sapiens too.

What stands out as the most significant learning from our expe ences in the last couple of years as thelack of gonuine concem for ru€l ares development, specially by the corpoEle sector, (other thanthose dependanl on agri busin€ss)! Everybody talks about the poor doprived rural community butnobody really cares or wants to do anything about it. We really failto und€rstand how India can everreduce poverty o. provide "humane living condations'lo vast majority of its population ifthe CSR policyof corporate is confined to u.ban areas or areas €xclusively of business interest. lflhere is incentive for CSR should it not gobeyond the "pe6onn9l welfate' schemes? For example, when we requost support for Computer lileracyfor rural India, lhe samecorporete funds on€ in the capital, where lhere is no dearth of Compuler centerslThe most rmportant issues today are a)jobopportunities and b)sloppingjob migrationfrom rurallo urban ar€as, toavoldfurlherclogging ofcrties. Howcan this beachieved if'thore is little support to p.omote rural dEvelopment of youth? We suggest more lransparency and wider oulreach in the CSR ofCoDoralo forGrassrcols dev€lopment needs.

The yesr began on a fanlastic blend ofEastand West Cultural& Spiritualjourn€ylhrough ajoint program on 'Fusion Arls' al VisualArts Gallery Our Mission of Heritage Resloration was glven a boost not only h€re but again in March 09, when the Trust wasrepresented at a Seminarin l\,,|e€ruion Anci€nt Indian Civlllzatlon.

The Trust achieved somo impodant milestones this year Th€ main highlights werelhe sanclion ofthe Broad{auge €illinkage atKampilya which was requestod on behalfoflocals in 2004, tirst successful s€minar with l\rinistry of H€alth & FamilyWelfare onAyurveda forwomen, filst S€minar at Lucknow and of course good accepiance ofour Greetjng Cards forlh6 Festive SeasonlAlsofinally being abl€ to organize a program at Kanpurwas surolya tough succ€ss, as it took us almosta year to make the localsunderstand lhe rol€venc€ ofinvolving youth tor awatoness, I\,1osl pleasant sulprise ofthe Lucknow and Kanpur Semjnarwas thegreat interest and attention that the studenls took it seemed they were hardly €xpos€d lo inleractive seminars here.

Anolher crucial progress was the kind support of the Ministry of Tourism and lhe interest of the Hon'ble l\,{inister hersetf &encouraging us to submit a Rural Tourism Repofl lo make Kampilya a Cultural Tourist place. The proposal was submitted atLucknow and our enquiries reveallhatthe UP Government has sent communications for processing ths papers. This willhave aremarkablg lmpacton ih€ socio-economic development of the area.

This year we also applied forCommunity Radio Service Licenseto the l\rinistry of Information and Broadcasting through the goodoffice of Commonwealth Education for Medi6 Center, who also exposed us to a cornprehensive learning about lhe prccess oflicensing and operationsatSolan, HimachalPradesh. Hopefullyihe CRS willbe operationatwithin ayearatKampilyatooand helpus widen our outreach foAoua rural development mission,

Every success is always the result of beliefand dedicalion and our team of program implementers and Coordinalors are neverlacking here. Success is also linked to the resources we can garner and we afe graleful lo all our donors, benefaclors andsponsors withoutlheirsupportand good wisheswe could not have been able lo achieve ourgoals. Yes lhere are a few regrets aswe were unable to do some of our projects due to lack of sufficisnt funds, specially upg rading out Compuler Center at Farrukhabadandlhe Common FacilityCenlerforthe Craflswomen. Soonerratherthan laterweare sure we will have lhis projecton lineloo.

Onceagain we express our heartfelt gratitude to all our wellwisherc who havewritten us encouraging messages ard alllhosewhohave been providing us financial assislance to carry forward our mission. We seek your generous suppod and associalion formeaningful programs for the socio-economic development ofthe disadvaniaged sections of society at large.

Location of our present social development work-Rural and urban areas wilh special atiention to lherural sector and the small and marginalized farmerwhose condit ion has a direct bearing on our targetgroup ofwomen/youth.

We consider every aspect affecting ourtarget group individual/ locality, and believe in empowering atevery level as essential tofulf i l l ing the objective.

Why Women & Youth need our attention?Women form almost 50% of our populationa large human resource which has been muchmisperceived, marginalized and not facilitated enough to contribute to the economy in quantifiableterms. In urban a vast seclion ofthe educated women and youth are directionless with llttle access toany means to knowwhatto do with them.In ruralareaslhe race is to reach cit ieswithout feal izingthevastresoufcesthey have backhome.Outexperience also tel ls us that i fyou empower a woman you actually help a family.

Hence empowerment ofwomen is not possible without taking into account the men in their l ives. Oufstudy ofthe status ofthe area we chose forstarting our project shows two cfitical issues that we need toaddressaregendersens t ization and vocatio na I ed ucatjon

Media should focus on women's potitical empowerment: experts

New Delhi, Sep 11 (IANS) Debating the role of the media inenhancing women's pafticipation in political processes at a seminarhere Thursday, politicians, academics and activists were nearlyunanimous in slamming newspapers and broadcastersfor ignoringgender issues."Thetime is herewhen thewomen at the grassrootslevel of our society have stepped out of their kitchens and havecome out and are now governing village panchayats. Yet the Indianmedia, be it prcss or the broadcasters, choose to highlight themuder of a 14-year-old girl rather than to report aboui lhisrevolutionary change which is sweeping the country." PanchayatiRaj Minister Mani ShankarAiyar said.

He was addressing the seminar on the Role of Media inMainstreaming and Enhancing Women's Poli t ical Part icipation.

Organised by the Draupadi Trust, an NGO working for creatrngawareness for the women of every section of society, the seminarwas held at the lndian Institute of Mass Communication and saw arange of speakers from political parties, academia, legal and civilsoctety.

They included Jaya Jaitley, former Samata Party president andsocialactivist, B.B. Bhattacharya, vice-chancellorof the JawaharlalNehru University, and Girija Vyas, chairperson of the NationaiCommission forWomen-

Almost all speakers slammed the media's approach to genderissues and said it was concerned only about powerand money.

"For the media, only negative news is worth publishing. l tundermines women by focusing on their skin colour, clothes andclass. When has the media focused on the changes which womenare bringing atthe panchayati level?" said Jait ley.

Referring tothe 33 parcent reseruation for women in panchayatirajinstitutions, Draupadi Trust chainerson Neera Mishrasaid 'for a woman living in a remote village of somepoverty-stricken state, this means nothing. ButDraupadi is working towards educating these women tocome foMard and take an active part in the society-making process.

Who's JOB IS IT

This is a story about four people named

Everybody, SomebodY, AnYbodY and

Nobody. There was an important job to

be done and EverybodY was asked to do

it. Everybody was sure SomebodYwould do it. Anybody could have done it

but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry

about that because it was Everybody'sjob. Everybody thought Anybody could

do it but NobodY realized that

Everyrbody wouldn't do it. It ended up

that EverybodY blamed SomebodYwhen Nobody did what AnYbodY could

have done.
