VI SALLY STRICKLAND , daughter to Susannah Stowe and Jonathan Strickland Sr., was living and enumerated in the 1850 census for Springville Township

and she declared her age as 75 years and her husband, Jeremiah Rosencrants gives his age as 7 8 years. Apparently they are deceased before 1860. No gravestones, probates or obituaries have been found for them. Jeremiah Rosencrants deeded his real estate, in 1841, to his daughter Susan Tuttle "for yearly support" and the deed shows no release of dower rights signed by Sally. Sometimes we have found people listed as living a the time of the 1850 census in this County who were dead and had estates settled before 1850. Based on the 1850 census, Sally was probably born about 1775, and Jeremiah Rosencrants born about 1772.

Sally Strickland and JEREMIAH ROSENCRANTS were married in Orange County, New York about 1788 , which makes us question her birth year. Also her sister, Susannah Strickland gives her birth year as 1775. Three of the children of Sally and Jeremiah Rosencrants were baptized and recorded in the Reformed Dutch Church Records:

1. Jannitie Rosenkranz baptized 20 December 1789 2 . Jeremiah Rosenkranz jun. baptized 1 January 1792 3. Suse Rosenkranz baptized 26 July 1795

Stocker's history states that Sally and Jeremiah had at least three more children, and lists them as:

Jane and Abiathar Tuttle are buried in White Haven, Pennsylvania. They were living in White Haven when Jane died and she was buried there. These Tuttles were very earnest Methodists, he was a Local Preacher and an exhorted at Camp Meetings. Both of them were widely known in religious circles and very highly respected. Jeremiah Rosencrants junior married second, after 1861, Eliza's younger sister, Mrs Mahala (Strickland) (Ball) Rhinevault, who died

-76-

in Forest Lake Twp. after 1880. Jeremiah Rosencrants removed some time after 1861 to New Milford and his estate was settled in Orphan Court, Montrose. The record states that he left a widow and eight children and heirs of the deceased children.

The children of Eliza and Jeremiah Rosencrants were:

baptized as given above. She married 5 January 1817 in Springville, to BENONI TUTTLE, son to Rebeckah Thomas and Ezra Tuttle. He was born 5 November 1793 in Weathersfield, Windsor County, Vermont, as was his brother, Abiathar, and died in Springville, 26 February 1833, aged 39y, 3m, 21d, buried in the Lynn Cemetery, Springville Township. He was a membe of the Masonic Lodge. The Orphan Court Records in Montrose give his miner children:

1. Perry H. Tuttle over 14 years in 1834 2. Ezra Tuttle over 14 years in 1834 3. Achsa Tuttle under 14 years in 1834 4. Mary Ann Tuttle under 14 years in 1834 5. Sarah Jane Tuttle under 14 years in 1834 6. Sophia Tuttle under 14 years in 1834 7. Minerva Tuttle under 14 years in 1834

All of these children chose their mother, Susannah Tuttle for their guardian. The Orphan court record states that their mother, Mrs. Susannah Tuttle later "vacated" the appointment (resigned) and the children's uncle, Myron Tuttle was appointed in 1839 as their guardian.

Amos Williams was administrator of Benoni Tuttle's estate, appointed 19 August 1835. The estate was finally settled 5 September 1836.

A Montrose newspaper carried an announcement of the marriage of a Susan Tuttle in Montrose on 7 March 1852 to Lyman Morton of South Hadley, Massachusetts. since there is no gravestone for Susan in this area, and little is known of her after 1839, this marriage might be the reason for no further data about her in this area.

4. MARY B. ROSENCRANTS, daughter to Sally Strickland and Jeremiah Rosencrants Sr. was born at

Shohola Falls, Pike County, 29 October 18106, and died in Springville, 29 July 1888, aged Sly, 9m, Od, buried in the Episcopal Cemetery, Springville village. Amos and Polly Williams had six children:

M. K. Williams left a widow and two daughters (O.C. 13 p. 518) and had not settled his father's estate. Court appointed an administrator to settle both estates. Stocker states page 409 "Miner K. this estate was finally settled after M. K. Williams died in 1886 and Mrs. Mary B. Williams died in 1888, Frank B. Williams, son, and Mary E. Hickcox, daughter received each $549.07 as their inheritance.

The obituary of Amos Williams appeared in the Independent Republican newspaper in Montrose:

"At Lynn Corners, 13, February 1865, Mr. Amos Williams, in the 59th year of his age. He was very well known in Springville Township for many years, coming there thirtyeight years ago from Brooklyn, this county. In 1840, he became a member of the Episcopal Church and Consistent. He was confined to his room by sickness for more than a year until he wasted away."

Amos Williams joined the Episcopal Church in Springville and was one of its first vestry. He and all of his children were married by Episcopal clergymen. In his younger days he was a carpenter and worked with Judge Asa Packer, and named one of his daughters for Mrs. Packer. He built many buildings in Springville and Lynn.

Miss Blackman states in her history, page 315 that an Asa Park was a volunteer in a New York Regiment and was killed at the first battle of Bull Run in the Civil war. the information given is not clear whether this was the son of Dr. Asa Park of Montrose or the latter's son, Dr. Ezra s. Park. The Park Genealogy states that the soldier was a Lieutenant during the War. But proof is not clear that the soldier married the youngest daughter of Amos Williams regardless of family speculation.

she heard the shot which killed

Olive and Elvira Gray had three children who died young . Their names and places of burial is now unknown. The parents lived in a number of places, including Tioga County, New York; Susquehanna County, and Bradford County, before they settleds at Standing Stone. Oliver and Elvira Gray were charter members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Orwell, Bradford County, in 1838 , made contributions and attended service until they transferred membership to Standing Stone. (Church records in latter place not available.)

Oliver Spicer Gray was aged 47y, 6m, 15d when he died. At 12 years of age, he had walked all the way from Ledyard, Connecticut, to Dimock, this county, with his father and siblings. They arrived 1 January 1819 by ox team and a wood-shod sled. The boys led cows and sheep. They were reoprted to have been the first to arrive in Dimock by such transportation, due to "improved roads".

When Oliver Spicer Gray died, his brothers: John Wintrop Gray and Abisha Woodward Gray were appointed by Orphan Court in Towanda, as adminsitrators of his estate. As part of the expenses listed in t he probate papers was the cost of a gravestone. The family long remembered that the gravestone was ready to be set at the grave , was paid for, and Messrs. Gray went with a team of horses and wagon, loaded the memorial stone in the wagon and proceeded to go to the cemetery. A severe thunder storm came up, and they got permission to put their wagon upstairs in the barn and the horses in a stall in the basement until after the shower was over. While they were waiting out the storm, a bolt of lightning struck the barn, ignited the hay and in seconds the barn was an inferno of heat and flames. The horses had been killed by the lightning, the waagon was burned and the gravestone fell threw the floor and was broken to bits. The two men had to walk home in the rain. Hence all these years the grave of o. S. Gray has been unmarked.

6 . SAMUEL ROSENCRANTS, son to Sally Strickland and Jeremiah Rosencrants, was born about 1800 in Shohola

Falls, Pike County . The only place he has been located is found in a deed where i t is stated: "Jeremiah Rosencrants and his son, Samuel Rosencrants, both of Springville, for $ 125, release to Frederick M. Wi llia ms, five acres on the east side of the farm of Jeremiah Rosencrants senior, with the saw mill, milly year (sic -yard?) and water privileges, 19 June 1840." (D.B . 12, p. 509) Samuel probably moved to other locations in pursuit o f his vocation. No further information found in this county.

Recorded the same day on page 508 is another deed: "Jeremiah Rosencrants senior (husband of Sally Strickland, and as a single man) sold his farm of 77 acres in Springville to his daughter, Susan Tuttle, for life support.
