    SANGKURIANG

A long time ago, the ancient land of Sunda was ruled by a king and 4ueen who had but a singledaughter. 5er name was 6ayang Sumbi. She was beautiful and cle!er but also %am%ered ands%olited.

7ne day as she was wea!ing in her %a!ilion, she became moody and distracted, which caused her tokee% dro%%ing her shuttle on the floor. 7nce when it fell she exclaimed she would marry the one whoga!e it back to her. At that !ery moment her dog #umang, a demigod %ossessing magic %owers, cameu% to her with the shuttle in his mouth. 6ayang Sumbi had to marry him.

#hey li!ed ha%%ily together, and 6ayang Sumbi ga!e birth to a baby boy, human in a%%earance butendowed with his father’s magic %owers. She named him Sangkuriang. As the boy grew u%, he wasalways guarded by the faithful dog #umang, whom he knew only as a com%anion and not as hisfather, Sangkuriang became handsome and bra!e.

7ne day his mother asked him to go hunting with the dog and bring her !enison for a feast. Afterhunting all day without success, Sangkuriang worried about facing his mother em%ty8handed.

6es%erate, he took an arrow and shot the dog. 5e returned home and handed o!er the meat to his%leased mother. Soon after the feast, howe!er, 6ayang Sumbi 4uestioned her son about the absenceof #umang. At first he e!aded her 4ueries but finally told her what had ha%%ened. She was horrifiedand struck her son so hard on the tem%le that he colla%sed. 2or that, the old king banished hisdaughter from the court and she was made to roam around the kingdom. Sangkuriang reco!ered witha large scar on his tem%le, and he too left the court to wander about the world.

Sangkuriang had to make a lake that

filled the whole !al%ley and build a boat for the cou%le to sail in, all before dawn.

Sangkuriang started to work. 5is lo!e ga!e him extraordinary strength, and he used his magic %owersto summon the s%irits to hel% him. &ith boulders and mud they dammed the ri!er in the !alley and thewater rose and began to form a lake. n the early morning hours he cho%%ed down a huge tree in theforest and began hollowing it out to make a boat. &hen 6ayang Sumbi saw that he was about toaccom%lish what she has thought im%ossible, she called on the gods to bring the sun u% early andthwart Sangkuriang.

#he cock crowed, the sun rose much earlier than usual, and Sangkuriang reali/ed he had beendecei!ed. n a fit of fury he caused 6ayang Sumbi and kicked the half8finished boat back into theforest. #here it lies u%side down today, forming the mountain #angkuban erahu 9:%turned Boat;. +otfar away is the stum% of the tree Sangkuriang had felled, now called Bukit #inggi. #he damSangkuriang had built caused the !alley to become a lake, where both Sangkuriang and 6ayangSumbi drowned themsel!es. #hey were ne!er heard of again.
