Seneca girls’ soccer makes surprise run to championship
By MIKE MONOSTRAThe Sun
Seneca High School’s soccerteams are making underdog play-off runs an annual occurrence. In 2014, the boys’ team won a
pair of playoff games and ad-vanced to the South Jersey GroupIII semifinals despite only beingseeded 13th out of 16 teams in itsbracket. This season, the girls’ soccer
team advanced even further. Seed-ed No. 10 in the South JerseyGroup III tournament, the GoldenEagles upset three higher-seededteams on the road and advancedall the way to the sectional cham-pionship game, where they cameone goal short of completingtheir Cinderella run, as they lostto No. 4 seed Toms River South, 3-2, in double overtime on Nov. 12.Head coach Ronald Jensen be-
lieves a number of factors playedinto Seneca’s surprise playoffrun. He felt the team was alwaysbetter than its record and seedingindicated because it played a diffi-cult schedule in the Olympic Con-ference.“We played good teams, we
played a really difficult sched-ule,” Jensen said. “The otherteams we play that have mediocre.500 records, like Cherry Hill Eastand Timber Creek, they’re goodteams, too. The record doesn’tquite indicate.”
Seneca was seeded No. 10 afterfinishing the regular season withan 8-7-2 record. However, theGolden Eagles had played well inthe weeks leading up the playoffs, winning four of their last six reg-ular season games.Jensen said a Sept. 30 game
against Washington Townshipwas the turning point for histeam this season.“We came out and scored two
goals in the first minute and ahalf,” Jensen said. “We’re up 3-0at halftime and we ended up los-ing the game 4-3. That’s whenthey realized we can play with ateam like Washington Township, but we can’t have breakdowns.”The Golden Eagles had to over-
come a few obstacles along theway. Injuries left Seneca with justthree seniors on the roster late inthe season. Despite this, Jensensaid the seniors’ leadership wasimportant down stretch.“Their leadership in practices
and those games just keepingspirits up and keeping the teamfocused was rewarding for me tosee as a coach,” Jensen said.Seneca didn’t go into its playoff
opener against No. 7 seed Main-land with the mentality of an un-derdog. The team’s strong finishto the regular season gave it confi-dence in the playoffs.“Instead of saying we were the
underdog, we took the oppositeidea,” Jensen said. “We said wemay be seeded 10th, but we’re nounderdog. Going in with thatmentality, I told the girls that’swhat we worked for. Don’t be sur-prised that we’re here.”Against Mainland, No. 2 seed
Hammonton in the quarterfinalsand No. 3 seed Central Regionalin the semifinals, Senecaoutscored its opponents by a com-bined score of 9-3. Junior ErinKersetter scored both goals for
The Golden Eagles advanced as No. 10 seed, losing championship game, 3-2, in double overtime

“I am so proud to be involved in thisproject again this year after the success oflast year's event. We're building it biggerand, hopefully, better each year,” Taberna-cle Historical Society President Mary AnnSilvers said. The tree lighting is jointly sponsored by
the Tabernacle Historical Society, the Tab-ernacle Woman’s Association and the Tab-ernacle PTA. It is free and open to every-one.Along with the ceremonial lighting of
the tree, the evening’s program will also in-clude musical performances by third-grade singers of the elementary school, aninstrumental ensemble from Seneca High
School, the Olson Middle School chorusand the OMS Hand Chimes group. SantaClaus will also make a special appearanceand will be available later in the gazebo forvisits and photos. All portions of the program this year
will take place outdoors. Tents will be inplace for the musicians as well as compli-mentary refreshments. In addition, GirlScouts will be on hand to help childrenwith a holiday craft. The festivities will go on, rain or shine,
so guests are advised to dress for theweather. Guests are also advised to bringcameras for photos with Santa.Parking will be available at the Holy Eu-
charist Church lot, which is adjacent toTown Hall. Members of the townshipCERT Team, Tabernacle Fire CompanyNo. 1, Tabernacle Rescue Squad and repre-sentatives of the Office of Emergency
Management will be on hand to ensure anenjoyable and safe evening for everyone. The community tree will be illuminated
every night until early January as a sym-bol of the good will in Tabernacle. The goalof the ceremonial lighting, according tothe groups involved, is to one day have itbecome a well-loved holiday tradition inthe township.“(Last year) there were a lot of happy
families enjoying the holiday festivitiesand appreciating the wonderful communi-ty in which we live. This event warms theheart, enlightens the spirit and enrichesthe soul of the community,” Silvers said. For more information, please contact

Tomorrow officially kicks offthe holiday season. Thanksgiv-ing is here, and with it comes
family, friends, food and football. In elementary schools across the
country this week, children will betaught the history of Thanksgiving. Some will celebrate it by making pil-grim and Indian hats out of paper andby having a feast of their own. They’llbe asked what they are thankful forand share it with the class. At most of our homes on Thursday,
we’ll be sitting around a TV or at adinner table or keeping a close eye onthe oven so we don’t burn the turkey. We’ll be welcoming relatives, near andfar, to gather for a day where we canalso give thanks for all we have.Quickly, as if in a blink of an eye,
that theme will shift to the two most
famous winter holidays – Christmasand Hanukkah – and, with it, holidayshopping. But before you turn the page in your
mind to buying presents and decorat-ing your house with lights, take anextra minute this year to rememberwhat you’re thankful for, and helpthose who might not be as lucky asyou. You might not see it in your com-munity, but there are a lot of people inNew Jersey who need help. Legal Serv-ices of New Jersey, a group based inEdison, recently released a report thatsuggests that 2.8 million people in the
Garden State are living in poverty. Afamily of four living in this statewould have to earn $60,000 per year tobe considered above the group’s pover-ty line. That’s because, according to itsPresident Melville Miller, the groupdefines poverty as being significantlydeprived of any one particular need –after considering practical costs foreverything from food, clothing, health care, housing and transporta-tion.It’s expensive to live in our state –
we know that. And people are in needthroughout our state, not just in itsurban centers. So be thankful for what you have,
and help those who aren’t in the sameposition as you are. Do more for othersthis holiday season. It’ll be the best giftyou can give.

Seneca in the Hammonton win,and junior Mackenzie Hoffmanrecorded her first hat trick of theseason against Central. The winover Central was also the 100th inprogram history.“Throughout the season, the
team started to realize we couldplay really good soccer,” Jensensaid. “As we really got toward the
playoffs, that became the mentali-ty. Buckle down defensively anddon’t let opportunities slip by onthe attack.”Seneca’s season ended in a wild
South Jersey Group III champi-onship game against No. 4 seedToms River South. The GoldenEagles battled back from 1-0 and2-1 deficits to tie the game eachtime. Seneca and Toms RiverSouth went into overtime tied at2-2, and with time ticking down inthe second overtime, the game ap-peared to be destined for penalty
kicks.However, Toms River South got
a corner kick in the final minuteof the second overtime, and AliyaCanfield scored the game-win-ning goal on a scramble in frontof the net, ending Seneca’s playoffrun.
“When it ended the way it did,it was a shock,” Jensen said. “Itwas so sudden.”Despite the loss, Jensen said
the playoff run was important insetting up the program for 2016.Seneca had a lot of underclass-men on its varsity team this year,
and Jensen feels his team willhave the ability to get back to thesectional final again.“We have a lot of juniors and
sophomores who now have thisrun under their belt,” Jensensaid. “They now know what ittakes.”

As a student at Rowan College,Jackie Lambusta developed a pas-sion for teaching. She knew she wanted to pursue
the profession as a career, but shejust didn’t know what subject shewanted to dedicate herself to.“I dabbled with math and sci-
ence and quickly learned theywere not my areas of expertise,”Lambusta said. “Then, I took afew courses in American andBritish literature and fell in love.”That love for teaching English
has taken her a long way. She isnow doing what she has alwayswanted to do and has gotten quitegood at it.This will be her 10th year at
Seneca High School, where shewas just recently awarded the“Employee of the Month” honorfor October.Lambusta could not say
enough about her fellow staffmembers and teachers in theEnglish department, attributingmuch of her success to the groupshe is so proud to be a part of.“I feel so blessed to work with a
group of people who are so dedi-cated to their profession. I amsurrounded by such amazing edu-cators, and I am honored to berecognized,” Lambusta said. She alluded to how her col-
leagues welcomed her and madeher feel like a part of the “SenecaFamily” from the first day she
began teaching at Seneca. She frequently works with this
group in a collaborative effort tocreate dynamic lessons that chal-lenge students and help them cre-ate meaning in their own lives.“The strength lies not only in
our congeniality, but also in ourcollegiality,” as Lambusta put it,when referring to the Seneca Eng-lish department.Lambusta uses reading as a
channel to experience life on amultitude of levels and makesense of people's lives in thegrand scheme of things. She be-lieves reading helps develop em-pathy and form connections topeople whose lives are different. “Literature from different gen-
res and different schools ofthought gives us a platform fromwhich we can grow into morewell-rounded members of society– people who genuinely care andcan appreciate the struggles ofothers,” Lambusta said. The Waretown resident who
used to spend her time scuba div-ing with her husband now spendsthe majority of her free timebeing a mom to her son Liam.Though being a mom can be a
full-time job in itself, she contin-ues to read and obtain knowledgeshe can pass down to her stu-dents.
