Students at Indian Mills Schoolare learning some history abouttheir town and helping to cleanup a historical site. Each yearthird-grade students are taughtabout the life of Dr. James Still, the Black Doctor of the Pines. This year students in Mrs.Clementis and Mrs. Alspachsclasses are taking on the specialproject of cleaning up the Stillcemetery.

    Mrs. Woytowich approached

me last year and asked if wewanted a new project, and I saidyes without even knowing what itwas, Clementi said. It turnedout to be cleaning up the Stillcemetery.

Our principal, Ms. Mooreagreed to allowing us to work onthe project right away, Clementisaid. It covers many of the NJCore Curriculum Standards. Ms.

Moore also found out that herchildrens babysitter is a Still.

Dr. Still was born on StokesRoad in Shamong. His mother,Charity, was an escaped slave andhis father, Levin, was a slave whowas able to purchase his freedom.Dr. Still was one of 18 children. When a doctor came to the Stillhome to give medicine, a youngJames was enthralled and knewfrom that point on he wanted tobe a doctor; despite the fact it wasvery difficult for African Ameri-cans to become doctors in the1800s.

Still, who only had threemonths of formal schooling, per-severed through the years tolearn as much as he could aboutmedicine and curing people. Healso learned from Indians and theelderly. People finally started tovisit him for his special cures andhe helped many people overcomeillnesses.

the students to continue clean upwhile environmentalists wantedthe snakes to not be disturbed.

Students worked together insmall groups and had a set ofrules that they had to follow.

They had to write the facts, the issue, sub issues, the law and

the witness statements two forprosecution and two for defense.

Weekly the students kept get-ting in small groups and work-ing on one section, Clementi

said. The students kept writingin those small groups until it allcame together and made sense. It took a lot of collaboration be-tween all of the groups. The stu-dents used our district moduleand email to correspond backand forth on the project whenthey werent in class.

The process is fun and educa-tional, Clementi said. Thisyear we used our Still Cemeteryproject and created a fictional

mock trial about it. So the Mocktrial went right along with ourShamong history learning. NJCore Curriculum Standards arecovered and better yet; it is an-

    Already?Presidential politics? Now? Ick

eriously. People are talking about running for president?

In April? 2011? We have to start this now? We cant get

more Charlie Sheen/lost snake coverage for at least a fewmore weeks? Just about anything is better than listening to

    months of campaign gibberish.

    Politicians and other POTUS

    wanna-bes usually start off

with a Who, me? kind of false

    modesty. Then they announce

    theyre thinking about run-

ning. Then they form an ex-

    ploratory committee. Then,

like theyre giving us all some kind of early birthday present,

they declare that they, after much soul-searching and at the urg-

ing of millions of working men, women, children and dogs, in-

deed will selflessly, albeit reluctantly and at great personal sac-

rifice, toss their hat into the ring.

Oh, please. The Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary

are months away. Why all the drama now? Yes, we know it takes

a good bit of planning to run a presidential campaign. But

please spare us the soap operas this far in advance of anyone

    actually casting a vote.

Were all for spirited debate of the issues at all levels of gov-

ernment. Its democracy in action. Its the way people get their

views across, figure out which candidates to support and, in the

end, with any luck, solve some problems.

    Thats honest, responsible campaigning/governing. Useful

stuff. Meaningful stuff. Stuff people can sink their teeth into,

but stuff that usually happens closer to when an election is

about to take place or when no election is approaching and

politicians are doing their jobs you know, governing.

What are we going to be subjected to for the next eight or so

months from these presidential hopefuls? Announcements of

staffing hires and fires? Fund-raising pleas? Photo-ops?

Heres a tip: Regular people dont care about this stuff. At

    least not now.
