Seneca High School’s No. 23 Adriana Tirado sets up the Golden Eagle offense as she look to spark acomeback against Winslow. Seneca ran into a tough team last week as they suffered a 57-35 loss, bringing their overall record on the season to 4-6.

Teaching is a line of work thatseparates itself from others byhaving a direct effect on the youthof our country on a daily basis.

Good teachers supply their stu-dents with the tools to learn anentire curriculum in fewer thannine months. Great teachers areable to create a relationship withtheir students in a way that moldsthem into minds destined for suc-cess after they are released fromtheir classroom.

Over his 12-year career withSeneca High School, Keith Styershas established himself as a greatteacher and was recently recog-nized for this by receiving theteacher of the year award for2015.

Styers, the marching band di-rector at the high school, consid-ers himself lucky to teach a classthat is not considered a corecourse of the curriculum, so thestudents who enroll are not doingit because they are being forcedto.

“I’m fortunate to teach stu-dents that want to be in my class,”Styers said. “It's not like English

or algebra; it’sa privilege toteach a groupthat wants tolearn whatyou’re teach-ing.”

Styersprides himself on stayingheavily in-volved in hislessons by cre-ating music on a daily basis. Inaddition to being the marchingband director, he also runs theconcert band and the jazz band.

Styers met his colleague DougBarber at Shawnee High School, where he graduated in 1997. Bar-ber was the band director atShawnee when Styers was a stu-dent. He was able to help Styers

get involved at Seneca after hegraduated from West ChesterUniversity where he playedpiano.

“Percussion is my main instru-ment now, but I’ve been playingmusic since I was in kinder-garten,” Styers said. “I’m a life-long.”

Students in the Lenape Region-al High School District now areable to use several 3-D printers, and other technologically ad-vanced systems, in a district-widescience, technology, engineeringand math program, thanks inpart to a grant from BAE Sys-tems, Inc.

A $7,500 grant from BAE Sys-tems last year provided the neces-sary funds for the printers, whichstudents in all four schools in theLRHSD – Lenape, Shawnee,Cherokee and Seneca – are usingas part of Project Lead The Way.BAE Systems engineers recentlytoured a Cherokee High SchoolPLTW classroom to see the print-ers and students in action. BAE

Systems is donating another$7,500 to the district for the pro-gram again this year; the districthas not yet decided how the fundswill be used.

“We are looking forward to apartnership with BAE Systems inwhich their engineers can serveas guest speakers and sounding

boards for our students workingon capstone projects,” saidHeather Xenakis, director of cur-riculum and instruction atLRHSD. “This type of relation-ship is beneficial to our studentswho choose to continue on aSTEM-related career path.”

When faced with taking on a challengeor taking the easy way out, the SenecaHigh School Student Council embraced thetest.

Each year, the New Jersey Associationof Student Council Executive board choos-es a charity to sponsor. This year, the chari-ty is Hope Loves Company.

“We could have just written a checkfrom our funds to support this year’s chari-ty, but they decided to put a fundraiser to-gether in order to truly understand what

the organization is about and bring thisawareness into the community,” guidancecounselor and head of student councilErica Maira said.

The group decided to put together a din-ner and silent auction at the high school

with an open invitation. The community

service club, led by advisor Lynn Ritter, has taken over the food aspect of the event. The event will take place on Jan. 22 from

6 to 9 p.m. in the cafeteria. Tickets will besold at the door for $5, and guests will havethe opportunity to buy one ticket to win abasket for $10 or three tickets for $25.

All money raised at the event will be do-nated directly to the HLC charity.

Founded in 2007, HLC became the onlynon-profit in the U.S. dedicated to the chil-dren of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis pa-tients. The mission of the group is to pro-vide emotional and educational support to

children and young adults who have familymembers battling ALS.

The majority of funding for ALS goes toresearch and patient care. While that is im-portant, the children of these patients needto be addressed as well. It is estimated that

85 percent of ALS patients have children,so these children will witness a parentstruggling with terminal illness.

HLC founder Jodi O'Donnell-Ames willbe a guest speaker at the charity dinner.O’Donnell-Ames lost her husband KevinGerard O'Donnell to ALS in 2001.

School budgets are on the horizon

    statewide. There once was a

time when residents had a di-

rect way to give their input to the

budget, by voting “yay” or “nay” for

its passage. That opportunity has, for

the most part, been removed in our

state, but it doesn’t mean you can’t,and shouldn’t, be involved in the

    process.

The toughest job in New Jersey

right now? School board member has

to be at or near the top of the list.

    Whether you support Gov. Christie’s

    approach to budgeting, school board

members have had a tough time deal-

ing with a reduction in state aid over

    the last few years.

The vast majority of board mem-

bers don’t want to raise taxes and/or

cut services. But, sometimes, there is

no other option.Across the state, almost all school

districts will be doing less with less.

But did your board cut enough from

the budget? Too much? Do you agree

with the tax rate? Do you think it

should have been higher to provide

more services? What are your ideas

for cutting expenses and raising rev-

    enues?

    Whatever the budget situation

proves to be this year, what needs to

happen between now and next year to

    make things better?

We invite you to write letters to the

editor to share your thoughts with the

rest of the community. If you support

the budget, if you oppose it, if you

have ideas that could bring additional

revenue into your school district or

help to cut costs, now is the time toshare them.

Between now and when the school

budget is passed, be involved as much

as you can. Attend school board meet-

ings and express your thoughts. Public

school taxes account for the largest

percentage of your tax bill, after all.

You’ll be sending a message to your

    board of education regarding what

you would like to see take place in fu-

ture years – years that promise to be

    difficult yet again.

    in our opinion

Get involvedSchool budget talks are a  bout to begin

    Your thoughts

Throughout the school budget season, please share your thoughts with thecommunity through a letter to the editorin our paper.

program from PLTW is a highlycompetitive program designed toattract and retain students inter-ested in pursuing a STEM-relatedpost-secondary education and, ul-timately, career. Currently,Lenape and Seneca high schoolsare in their second full year of the

program, and Cherokee andShawnee high schools are in theinaugural year. BAE Systems, lo-cated in Mt. Laurel, is just one of the community partners that en-ables LRHSD to offer the pro-gram.

“BAE Systems is proud to part-ner with the Lenape RegionalHigh School District to help in-spire the next generation and ig-nite their passion for STEM. Welook forward to continuing ourpartnership in 2016 and beyond,”

said Tony Contino, program man-ager/department manager,

PLTW, a non-profit organiza-tion, is the leading provider of STEM education curriculum pro-grams in schools across the Unit-ed States. PLTW works to preparestudents for the global economy, one increasingly focused on high-growth and technology-driven oc-cupations. According to PLTW, by2018, the nation will have morethan 1.2 million unfilled STEM

jobs because there will not beenough qualified workers; PLTWadvocates STEM learning be-cause the organization believesthose fields will provide themost job growth now and in thefuture.

According to Xenakis, theLRHSD STEM course is interdis-ciplinary in its approach to learn-ing and is offered as an electiveindependent of any specific de-partment. The curriculum isstandards-based and aligned with

Styers credited his father, whowas also a music major in college, for his musical talents.

Styers runs the Seneca band ina unique way that not only en-hances students’ musical skillsbut also allows them to grow inother areas.

“Like most sports, we have ourhigh-scoring years and our low-scoring years,” Styers said. “Butfor me, it’s about the journey andwhat the students learn as theygo through the program.”

While the Golden Eaglesmarching band practices andcompetes in a similar fashion tosports teams, Styers attempts toschedule practices and events toallow students to be a part of other clubs. He places a specificemphasis on getting involved

    with something outside of aca-demics.

“All of my students have a skill, whether it’s being able to play an

instrument well or being able tosing well. Whatever it is you aregood at, utilize that to the best of your ability,” Styers preaches tohis students.

Being the band director and soheavily involved in music at thehigh school, Styers is in a veryvisible role, and his colleaguesrecognized this when they nomi-nated him for the award.

“It’s all very humbling. I’venever looked at myself as a

teacher of the year candidate oranything of that nature. That’s just the way it kind of happened. I just do my job,” Styers said.

He considers the teachers atSeneca to be some of the best ineducation, so to be honoredamong that group has been a spe-cial experience for Styers.

Being selected as teacher of theyear at his high school has cata-pulted Styers as a nominee for adistrict, county or even statewideaward.

He will now focus on workingon an application that will enablehim to be a candidate for thesenext levels of awards.

In 2003, O'Donnell-Ames mar-ried Warren Benton Ames and be-came the mother of his two chil-dren, 11-year-old Nora and 8-year-old Adam.

Nora and Adam lost their bio-logical mother Tina to ALS in2000, so they shared that samefeeling of grief due to the loss of

a parent to ALS.ALS has united the O'Donnell-Ames family through hope andlove. They live each day with hopefor tomorrow and want to helpother families who, like them, know ALS all too well.

The 501 (c) 3 non-profit waschosen by the NJASC as its desig-nated charity for this year. The

NJASC is the oldest state student

council association in the UnitedStates, and has inspired the "Spir-it Of New Jersey Youth" since1927. Its members are from highschools and middle schools, pub-lic and private, across the state.

Maira said her student councilgroup would have never knownabout HLC if it wasn’t a part of the NJASC.

The group immediately ralliedaround the idea for the charitydinner and got down to work, cre-

ating flyers and going to localbusinesses in the area before win-ter break to try to assemble thebaskets to auction off at theevent.

They were successful in gath-ering some unique prizes and areconfident guests will enjoy theirwinnings.

    “They are quality baskets this

    year,” Maira said. “They require

a lot of work to put together, sothe students feel very accom-plished when they get to handthem to the guests on the night of the event.”

The student council also putsthe names of the companies ontheir respective baskets so thewinner knows from whom theirgifts are coming.

“That way it works out for bothsides,” Maira said. “It’s a goodway to advertise for these busi-

nesses.”Maira has emphasized a dis-tinct focus on raising awarenessfor the charity and bringing at-tention to the amount of work itdoes for the community on top of helping the group financially.

“People should know about agreat, hard-working cause likethis,” Maira said.
