The SunA rare insect that has killed

tens of millions of ash trees inthe United States is now active inBurlington County.

On July 6, the state Depart-ment of Agriculture reported theemerald ash borer had been de-tected in Westampton.

“Emerald ash borer is a fast-moving, highly destructive inva-sive pest, which could lead to thedeath of ash trees,” said state Sec-

retary of Agriculture Douglas H.Fisher.

The adult emerald ash borer isa metallic green insect about one-half inch long and one-eighthinch wide, making it hard to de-tect in the wild.

The female beetles lay eggs onthe bark of ash trees. The eggs

hatch and the larvae bore into thebark to the fluid-conducting ves-sels underneath. The larvae feedand develop, cutting off the flowof nutrients and eventuallykilling the tree.

EAB attacks and kills NorthAmerican species of true ash,and tree death occurs three to fiveyears following initial infestation.

New Jersey is part of a federalquarantine to prevent the spreadof the beetle, which prohibits

movement of ash trees outsidethe quarantine zone.

The department also recom-mends not moving firewood,which is a vehicle for movementof tree-killing forest pests includ-ing EAB.

The state has set up traps inash trees to track EAB’s potentialspread in 27 Burlington Countytowns.

“We are currently setting up

traps in each of 76 New Jerseytowns in nine counties to delimitthe spread of emerald ash borer,”NJDA Division of Plant IndustryDirector Joseph Zoltowski said.

It was first discovered in Som-erset County in May 2014. Sincethen, it has been discovered intraps in Mercer and Burlingtoncounties.

“We are still just beginning todiscover the beetle,” Zoltowskisaid. “The results of the trappingproject may yield more informa-tion, but it is too early to tell be-cause we are still trapping untilthe end of August.”

“Now that the beetle is in New

Jersey and is starting to spread,we ask that towns put plans inplace to respond to the beetle,”Fisher said.

Township officials from thePine Barrens region did not seemto be too concerned about thematter this early in the develop-ment.

“At this point in time, I’m moreconcerned about the gypsy mothand the pine looper moth, they

are more predominant speciesthat are after pine,” TabernacleTownship Administrator DougCramer said. “There are a lot of fields between us and Westamp-ton.”

“Hopefully this isn’t going tohit us,” Shamong Township Ad-ministrator Sue Onorato said.“There hasn’t been any testinglike there was for gypsy moth. Wesign up for those evaluations bythe Department of Agriculturewhen they test the area to deter-mine if there is a sufficientamount of trees or woods that areat risk.”

Though there is concern the

beetle will cause issues for towns,such as tree removal costs and lia-bility if the dead tree causes dam-age, there is very little ash pres-ent in the Pine Barrens.

Onorato said if a tree were tobe impacted, it would be the pri-vate property owner’s responsi-bility, just as any other issueswith damaged trees or fallenbranches would be.

“The biggest problem area inthe state is the northwesterncounties, where most of the ash

resources are located,” Zoltowskisaid.

rafting in Machu Picchu, Peru,where I visited the ruins, Mt. Kili-manjaro and Lake Titicaca,” DiCroce said. “One of the highlightsof the trip was a visit to CostaRica where we hiked waterfalls,misty crater lakes and jungle-fringed, beautiful deserted beach-es,” Di Croce said.

Though Mexico is his favorite

vacation spot, one of his favoriteadventure-filled trips was drivinghis daughter Gabriella to SanDiego this past winter.

They stopped at the GrandCanyon, Las Vegas, the MeteorCrater in northern Arizona andone of the best preserved mete-orite impact craters on earth, lo-cated in the desert of Albu-querque, New Mexico, wherethey also saw a tribute to PinkFloyd in the planetarium and par-ticipated in a pub crawl through

the downtown Nashville bars and“honky tonks.”

Di Croce moved to Shamong in1993.

“I loved the area,” Di Crocesaid. “I remember visiting AtsionLake as a young boy and fell inthe love with the area and re-turned to live here some 20 yearslater.”

He enjoys the people, natureand peacefulness of thePinelands. Di Croce refers to Sha-

mong as “a little slice of heaven.”“I like the local township gov-ernment, which is responsive toour neighbors’ needs but not in-trusive or overbearing, with someof the best schools and lowesttaxes in all of New Jersey,” DiCroce said.

He grew up in Drexel Hill, Pa.,where he attended MonsignorBonner High School and Augus-tinian Catholic High School inthe Roman Catholic Archdioceseof Philadelphia.

Di Croce was a hockey fanthroughout his childhood. In fact,he went on to play intramural icehockey in college at Penn StateUniversity, attending both theDelaware County campus and

main campus in “Happy Valley.”Being a member of the Alpha

Tau Omega fraternity and aproud Penn State graduate, DiCroce is always sure to return a“we are” with “Penn State” as itis tradition to do if you are a partof the PSU family.

One of his proudest memoriescame while attending the univer-sity. Each year Penn State hostsan event known as THON, a 48-hour dance marathon that pro-vides emotional and financialsupport for cancer. THON is thelargest student-run philanthropy

in the world, and Di Croce partici-pated in it in 1979.

He also attended the South-western University School of Law J.D. in Los Angeles, and theUniversity of the Pacific, McGe-orge School of Law, where hestudied law enforcement and cor-rections. He received his diplomain advanced international legalstudies in 1985.

Di Croce studied in Salzburg,Austria, and worked as a younglawyer in Rome and London.

He is now an attorney with anew general law office opening indowntown Shamong in the for-mer Midlantic Bank/Mac n TotsChildcare building where he willoffer his legal services to all of Shamong’s residents who haven’thad many choices for local legalrepresentation.

“I am excited to be able to havesuch a beautiful building whichwill be restored to its formerglory,” Di Croce said. “My goal is

to represent 20 local Shamongbusinesses and continue to pro-vide affordable caring legal serv-ices to our neighbors, many of whom I have represented over theyears.”

After running his first MarineCorps marathon in Washington,D.C., Di Croce had much to beproud of throughout his younglife.

Now his proudest moments arespent with his three kids. Saman-tha, Gabriella and Michael are all

graduates of Seneca High Schooland the Indian Mills school sys-tem.

After Di Croce’s three childrenwent off to college, he had a littlemore time on his hands.

“I wanted to give back to thetown I live in and I love,” Di Crocesaid.

He has been a committeemanfor three years and has served onthe Shamong Planning and Zon-ing Board for two years.

Di Croce enjoys watching foot-ball in the fall as he cheers on hishometown Eagles.

However, his favorite month isJanuary because that’s the monthin which he was born.

“I now celebrate a ‘birthdaymonth,’ which I encourage every-one to do,” Di Croce said.

Di Croce likes to keep it lightwith his upbeat personality, buthe is appreciative of all that hehas.

“I am grateful for all of thewonderful people in my life,” DiCroce said. “I love the support of my friends, neighbors andchurch, the Holy Eucharist, withFather Andrew and Deacon Ken,who are always there in times of need.”

In the next few weeks, we’ll have

more comprehensive back to school

coverage, including a Q&A with the su-

perintendent of the school district to

keep you informed of all the changes

and excitement on the horizon for the

2015-2016 school year.

At The Sun, we’re all about commu-

nity news, which, of course, includes

covering the local school districts.

We’ll be at as many school board meet-

ings as possible and do our best to stay

on top of the “hard” news – taxes,

budgets, elections and the like.

But we want to be able to bring our

readers so much more. To do that, we

need your help.

When students achieve in the class-room, in the arts, in sports, etc., we

want to hear about it, so that we can

share that news with the entire com-

munity.

We publish an “On Campus” section

of our paper to do just that –to recog-

nize the hard-working students in a

way that stands out from other sec-

tions of our paper.

Making the honor roll, winning a

spelling bee, excelling in an extra-cur-

ricular activity, it’s all news to us.

Problem is, we don’t always hear

about these accomplishments. That’s

where you come in.

If you’re a parent, and your child

does something special, shoot us an

email. Include a photo, if possible.

If you’re a teacher or principal, and

you have a special event coming up or

there is other news that your people in

town should know about, tell us about

it.

If possible, we’ll have a reporter

present to cover the event or write a

story and take photos. If not, we’ll fig-ure out a way to get your news into the

paper, one way or another.

Too often, the news is driven by

events that anger or sadden people.

Too often, the good work of young peo-

ple is ignored or, at the least, certainly

not celebrated the way it should be.

And there are a lot of young people

doing good these days.

We want to change that. We want to

let everyone in town know when

there’s something positive going on,

when young people go beyond the ordi-

nary to help someone or have an out-

standing accomplishment.
