Federal library

1777 The first federal library in the U.S. is credited to be the Army library, west point,

established this year (AmLA 1960, p. 178). The library for the wets point military academy

opened in 1812, cf. Johnsson, p 356.

1803 The federal library in the treasury departement is reported to open this year (Johnsson.

P 353)

1832 Federal library: war departemen is reported to begin a library this year (Johnsson. P

353); also the coast and geodetic survey.

1836. A federal library: petent office is established (EB ed. 11, v. 16, p. 562). The official

gazette begins publication in 1872.

1850 A federal library in the Departement of the interior is reported to begin this year.

1853 The federal library the attoney generals office is reported to begin this year. (Johnsson.

P 353).

1862 Federal library: post office departement is reported begin one this year. (Johnsson. P

353).

1870 Federal library; office of education is reportet to open this year.

1882 A federal library: the geological survey is reported to open this year. Its bibliografi of

north American geologia begins 1886; the professional papers, 1902; the geophysical abstracts,

1929.

Agriculture

1860 the departement of agriculture library opens ( predeek p. 97). This is the forerunner of

the U.S National agricultural library. 1960.

1889 A classification scheme for the U. S. Departement of agriculture library is devised by

W. I. Fletcher (EA 1953)

Armed Forces

1952 The armed forces medical library is the new name for the army medical library (EA

1957, v. 17 p. 357k).

Library of Congress

1789 The first proposal for a library for the U. S congres is made to the cengress on August

6 by Elbridgen gerry: report a catalog of books... estimate of expense ...best mode of

procuring...

1800 The library of congress is formally established for the use of congress (Mearns p. 6).

1815 The libraryof congress is re-established with jeffersons private library, purchased by

congress (Mearns p. 20); a collection of 6,487 volumes, valued at $23,950; a distinctive privat

library passes to the U. S Goverment a changes the character of LC from a special to a

general library, one step closer to a national library.

1815 The library of congress issues a classed catalog with an indeks to authors (Ranz p. 26)

titled catalog of the library of the united states, it is for the jefferson library, Cf. Adams, p. 94,

note;pettee, p.29.

1815 The library of congress gets its first full-time librarian. George Watterston (Rogers p.

14).

1824 The library of congres receives room fitted and decorated for its own use (Mearns p.

32)

1830 the earliest know use of the title library of congress appears in the librarys generalcatalog for this year (Adams p. 94).

Military

1861 The U.S Military post library assosiation is organized (johnson p. 365); by 1875 nearly

every post or garrison had a library; after 1020 trained personnel were provided; by 1943 there

was a network of libraries, here and overseas.

National archives

1934 The U.S. National archives act is passed by congress (AE 1963 v. 2, p. 186). As early as1878 pres hayes recommended such and act in his annual message cf. Schellenberg.

Nasional library of medicine

1956 The nasional library of medicine is established in the U.S. (AmLA 1958, p. 78). It

began in the sugeon generals office library, see 1836,1922,1952.
