CITY VISIONThursday, 3 September 20152 NEWS

The young live a life offake bravado or heroicsThe other day I witness somethingthat could have shot straight out ofa horror movie; a young personending up in hospital, or possiblyin the Intensive Care Unit, due todrunkness and unruliness. I cameacross a group of new initiatestrying to stab an elderly from the samearea I stay in. I could not deduce anyparticular reason for them to do harm tothe old man.

As I drove past, I soon realized that Icould not just turn a blind eye to thisand feign ignorance.

I figured that if I did not act, I wouldhave to live with whatever consequencesfor the rest of my life.

For the sake of the old man and myconscience, I parked the car in my yardand answer to the civic duty of helpinganother human being in distress.

I decided to try and disuade these ‘newmen’-as the saying goes-of their actions.

So I try to talk sense into them, in thebelief that not long ago, they had been tothe ‘mountain’ and would listen to mypleas.

Instead, they tried to take me on. Thiswas manageable, though, as they hadbeen drinking, and thus not as difficult tohandle.

On realizing that discretion would notget the better part of their drunkenvalour, I decided to disarm one of themof his knife. With not so much ease, itwas.

It would have been dangerous for me totalk sense to an armed sot, and to provethe point, as I tried to rid him of theknife, a scuffle ensued, and as fate wouldhave it, one of them sustained a minorcut to his finger.

So the nightmare began. Suddenly, thewhole situation deteriorated into amini-war, what with this youngstercalling me all sort of names.

I stood there, agog, because, to myknowledge, he is much younger thaneven my eldest child.

The rants, name calling, profanities andthreats took two hours, before the police

turned up.When they saw the police, the thugs

took off on their heels. The police advisedus to call them again, should the thugscome around.

Thugs have the tendency to takemodesty and kindness as a sign ofweakness or fear; they are wrong.

So it is that they came back and startedwhere they left off. Fortunately the policewere still patrolling the area, and theychased and caught up with one of them.As he was running, it was dark, and himbeing under the influence of alcohol, suddenly hit his head against the edge ofa steel container.

It was not a nice spectacle, for he couldnow have suffered a permanent headdamage(in Kasi lingo, thats what Phdstands for).

Sad to say, as I was writing this, hewas still at a critical stage in hospital.

All of this was caused by alcoholconsumption.

I’m hurting inside. We are losing ourbrothers, sisters, cousins, children, sonsand daughters in numbers because of thisunrestrained consumption of alcohol.

The young do not get to experienceadulthood as their lives are cut short orprematurely. Kwanele!

We need to find ourselves because thecourse we have taken or chosen after ourliberation is risky. We have taken a pathwhereby it is hard for us to say “no” toour kids because we are afraid of therepercussions.

We need to go back to a time whenkids listened to elders. Where respect isthe order of the day. Going back tobasics, I believe, can save us. We areliving a life filled with fear. We are lost.

Mahlobo said thatOperationFielawill be in-tensified to eradicate any form of criminali-ty.

“Weare a listeninggovernment.Whenourpeople cried out for help, President Zuma in-structed us as Security Cluster ministers torespond appropriately to ensure that all citi-zens are and feel safe”.

ANCMPMandisaMatshoba, the constitu-ency head in Nyanga and Gugulethu, wasthe crowd favourite as she spoke on poign-ant matters such as lack of response by thepolice.

“When the children who are involved ingang violence are attacking each other thepolice fail to intervene.

We have also have been receiving many

complaints of drug dealers operating withimpunity in our communities, but nothinghappens to them,” she said to much ap-plause.

However, cheers turned to jeers when sheshifted gears and informed the crowd thatthe national governmentwas doing all it canto ensure safety as opposed to the provincialgovernment of the Western Cape.

“Wewant to let youknow that the nationalgovernment under the leadership or presi-dent Jacob Zuma was listening to the com-plaints and we are doing something to ad-dress the matter.

President Jacob Zuma is a listening presi-dent,” she added, as some in the crowdshowed dismay at her change of tune.

About a thousand members from Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata) and Congress of Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta), vowed to end bloodshed in their business, at Langa SportsComplex, on Thursday. PHOTO: MBONGISENI MASEKO

Leaders and members of rival taxi orga-nisations met in Langa last Thursady tothrash out their diffrences and make

peace with each other. The meeting between members of the

Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association(Cata)and the Congress for a Democratic Taxi As-sociation(Codeta) brought together hun-dreds of warring industry members to theLanga Sports Complex.

They all spoke with one voice: That thewar, which, according to someof them, start-ed in 2011 and has claimed the lives of morethan 30 victims has to come to an end.

Vusumzi Miselo, the chairperson of Code-ta, said the fighting started after the organi-sations lost some members to the newlyformed Delft Taxi Association (DTA).

Miselo said the unity between Cata andCodeta should be a vehicle to take the indus-try back to basics and the business of the in-dustry.

During the meeting, it was resolved to in-vite the DTA to a meeting to iron out all theirdifferences and to allow the peace process totake its course.

Miselo said an adhoc committee set up toestablish law and order within the factionswas suddenly dissolved, thus giving muscleto lawlessness, which contributed immense-ly to the killings.

“People began to die after the committeewas dissolved. We are here today to say thatshall not happen again. There are so manypeople who have lost their lives since 2011.We want to put an end to bloodshed and may-hem.Phansi ngokubulalana sodwa (Let us stop

killing each other). The massive number ofpeople present here is evidence that both as-sociations are saying enough is enough withthe killings. We must always defend thetruth,” Miselo said.

He said some members were “told lies”that if they follow the breakaway associa-tion it would “take them somewhere”.

He added that members should work andearn a living the right way.

Miselo said those who find it hard to workwith the associations now that they are unit-ed in one voice for peace leave and look forgreener pastures in the Eastern Cape.

There is a 15/15 committee formed bymembers from both associations which willsit at least once a month to ensure thesmooth running of the associations.

It was also mentioned that there is an “in-telligence structure” for the associationswhich always gets all the information aboutthe killings and all bad behaviour by themembers.

The associations have also designed a logowhich is now their letter head to ensure thatthey speak with one voice to governmentand other stakeholders.

He also said Codeta supported the MyCiticoncept to expand route in Khayelitsha.

He said he once overheard some elders“spreading lies” that he received some mil-

lions of rands to allow MyCiti in the area.Nqazeleni Matayitayi, chairperson for

Cata, applauded the effort to make peace.“We all have to say enough is enough

with the killings. Our intention is for all ofus to speak peace. We will make errors aswe work together, because we are humanbeings, but we need to come together andcorrect those errors in a good way. Thereis no one who is perfect, but if we can cometogether and speak in one voice we wouldbe perfect. Both associations had good in-tentions before things started going thewrong way. We realised that we are sittingwithabig problem inourmidst, that iswhywe called the meeting with our brothers tosit down and talk. God wants our businessto run smoothly and beautifuly. We allwant peace,” Matayitayi said.

MandlaMata, first deputy chairpersonofthe South African National Taxi Council(Santaco) in the province, applauded the ef-forts towards peace.

“I would like to thank you for what I seehere today. Dissolving the committeeshowed that people wanted not to be leadlike the people of Israel, who decided tospeak directly to God, instead of allowingMoses to be the mediator. I thank you forthe reunion after we have realised that wehave been walking on the land that weshould not been walking on,” Matayitayisaid.

Almost all the speakers on the day quot-ed frombible and theirmeetingwasopenedand closed with heartfelt prayers.

Elders from both associations also raisedtheir voice against the killings.

They also said they are positive that theeffort will bear fruit.

The Aquarium has also provided him withfinancial assistance.

Lembeni has a strong passion for tourismand started his career in the Cape Town tour-ism industry in 1998.

He has worked in various hotels withinCape Town, the Two Oceans Aquarium, theCastle of Good Hope, as well as with the CitySightseeing operation.

He received his tertiary educationthrough the University of South Africa(Tour Operation Management) and also at-tended the College of Cape Town where hestudied Tourism Management and Tour Op-eration. Mzu is also a qualified Western andEastern Cape tour guide. On top of all of this,he is also a qualified magician! He believesthat one should make your passion your ca-reer.

Lembeni’s incredible passion for thetownships and communities around CapeTown is the building block for his townshiptour business that he started in 2012 and in2014 he published a book titled IntroducingCape Town’s Townships.

iMzu Tours takes interested parties onwalking township tours through Khayelit-sha.

On these tours, visitors are introduced tothe community on a personal basis.

They are taken to visit various projects,a school, one of the local markets, a local she-been and various other points of interestwithin the informal settlement. iMzu Toursalso offers a special “Gospel Tour”, which in-cludes a Sunday church service at one of thecommunity churches.

Though Lembeni’s township tours are fo-cused on taking tourists to experience the in-formal settlement, he very quickly realisedthat many Capetonians do not know theirown city.

He therefore also started to focus on theCape Town youth and now organises toursand excursions for learners to enable themto learn about their city.

“My vision is to uplift the importance oftourism in our communities, invest in edu-cation for our children by doing school toursand career orientation with us. I am willingto share my experience with school learnersand share my business skills with young en-trepreneurs like me,” said Lembeni.

“It’s wonderful to be associated with Mzu.He has incredible drive and is passionateabout his work and his community.

Hostel construction grinds to a halt over rowConstruction on the City of Cape Town’sflagship hostel transformation project inLanga has been suspended due to ongoingprotest action in the area, the City said ina statement on Tuesday.

“While we respect the rights of residentsto protest, this aggressive and illegal be-haviour is utterly unacceptable,” saidmayoral committee member for humansettlements, councillor Benedicta van Min-nen.

She said that a group of youths cam-paigning for a change in the agreed-uponhousing allocation for this hostel projecthad intimidated members of the projectsteering committee.

“It must be noted that engagementsabout the allocation of units and theproject in general have been in-depth, in-clusive and thorough over months. A clearprocess was agreed upon.

“The City has met with the protesting

group, which comprises approximately 30individuals, but they have refused to co-op-erate,” said Van Minnen.

The 463 units, which are being built onthe Old Depot Site in Langa, form part ofthe first phase of a project, which will ulti-mately see the construction of more than1 300 units in the next five years, the state-ment said.

“We regard this as one of the largest re-dress projects in the Western Cape. We areaiming to eradicate the horrific apartheid-era hostels.

Some of these families have been livingin the terrible conditions prevailing in theLanga hostels for the past 40 years and wewill not allow this group of protesters to de-lay our project.”

get mentorship about manhood, but girls donot have such a platform. This(Salt) is the platform for them to ex-

press themselves. We stand united in onevoice against child abuse and we say no toteenage pregnancy and we say no to sexualabuse,” Jama said.Jama also said part of their programmes

included involving girls in sports, arts andcultural projects and they are also planningto host a modelling competition in the nearfuture. She said they were also planning to adopt

Chefs in making celebrated the end of their first six months of training at Eziko Cooking andCatering School, in Langa, recently.

OWN CORRESPONDENT

It was a beautiful day when young, aspir-ing chefs marked the end of their first sixmonths of training at Eziko Cooking and

Catering School, in Langa, recently. The chefs are part of the 2015 intake of

young chefs in the making. The students havenowcompleted their in-

house training andmove on to do sixmonthsof practical training in the industry. Theyare then assessed and qualify at the end of

the year. The gathering was to celebrate their suc-

cess at qualifying to move on from theschool and to head into doing hands-onwork in places such as Sky Chef, the Con-ference Centre and a variety of hotels inCape Town.Family and friends gathered to enjoy a

lunch prepared and served by the students.A variety of speakers wished them well

on the next stage of their journey and of-fered some advice and inspiration. The Eziko Cooking and Catering School

was established by a former Langa HighSchool teacher, Victor Mguqulwa, in 1996.Hismission then andnowwas to address

the issues of unemployment in townshipcommunities. While teaching at the local school he no-

ticed that there was a high interest in thecooking programmes and competitions atthe school. He realized that by providing youngsters

with cooking skills, they would be able tofind employment andcreate their ownbusi-nesses in the future.Safmarine provided the initial shipping

containers that were used to build theschool and also donated further shippingcontainers to build the restaurant for Ezi-ko.An initial idea led to the creation of a

school that has now been operating formore than 15 years.Mguqulwa’s vision is that the communi-

ty can only develop bymaking people claimresponsibility for their problems and theirfuture. This is done through themotto: Youmust

‘teach people how to fish rather than catch-ing the fish for them.”

indefinitely.The preservation of white privilege,

will not be a permanent mark of thisland. It will not be the order of the day

Our police are sitting ducksThe recent killings of our police officersin SA leaves us wondering what may bethe cause. But we must also keep in mind the

saying: “There is no smoke without fire.”Our police officers are not skilled

enough or equipped to deal with cases. The manner in which some police

officers handle cases is shocking. We always read and hear in the media

about how mean some of them becomewhen doing their jobs.I’m a victim of bad treatment from a

particular officer in Mamelodi. In my opinion, I think he does not

qualify to be a police officer.

I had a domestic problem at home.Instead of solving the problem, he kepton telling my wife to divorce me.Is that what they are supposed to do?We can all guess what his intentions

were in that regard. Many people are tired of the treatment

they get from police officials. This results in communities not

co-operating when they require assist-ance.The powers in the police force need to

review the training methods of the SAPS.No to police killings!

ANC deployeesshow lack of depthThe current bureaucratic practices ofthe ‘trusted’ cadres of the ANC deployedin government have revealed ‘lack ofsincerity and tenacity of purpose’.The cadres’ moral gravity and

ideological density have been under-mined and diluted by the rampant actsof corruption in government, sheerignorance of the people’s aspirationsand the dilly-dallying on revolutionaryprinciple. In their relentless pursuit of hegemo-

ny the communists have not onlyconfused the African masses butchanged the DNA of the ANC, as theembodiment of unity amongst theAfrican people. We now experience tribalism and

regionalism of unimaginable proportion. The onslaught of Marxist-Leninist

gang has not only dampened the peo-ple’s spirit, but forced President Zumato turn his back on his people.Instances of Marikana massacre; the

killing of Andries Tatane, the unendingNkandla saga; Gupta scandal; policebrutality on the protesting masses; theerection of e-Tolls against the will of thepeople; stubborn unemployment andunscrupulous labour brokering all pointto inefficiency and incapacity of theANC as a leader of society. After 21 years of democracy it cannot

be correct or logical that the peoplecomplain about lack of basic servicessuch as water, sanitation, electricity, housing and healthcare. These are the minimum standards to

ensure that people lead a decent life. The majority party (ANC) has, however, admitted to its failures, but the peoplecontinue to invest their hope in it. Atypical example of major sell-out is theproperty clause hence the ANC struggleto resolve the land question and distri-bution of mineral resources such asgold, diamond, copper, coal, manganese, aluminium, fisheries, marine oil, ironore and platinum. It is clear that the ANC, especially the

current leadership, under Jacob Zumaand Blade Nzimande, will never possessthe balls to resolve the land redistribu-tion and employment questions. Insteadthe ANC is at war with itself – ideologi-cally, spiritually and programmatically. The ANC government must recognise

and declare land a basic human right. That principle must be enshrined in theconstitution because land is money andpower.Every day in their conferences, no

different with NGC 2015, they talk aboutradical policy shift – to adopt AfricanScientific Socialism? Or kill the ANCand change it into Marxist instrument

to implement a communist ideology? What is obvious is that South Africa’seconomic and social problems are beyondthe current ANC’s capacity to conceptual-ise and operationalise into solutions.Nonetheless, that ANC must now watchout because its delaying tactics shalldeny it a place in the heart of themasses. Its relevance and ideas aremurky and obsolete. Voter consciousnessis awakened. No longer will the talkabout history and dead people matter themost. It is us who are living that needdevelopment and sustainable growth.Revolutionary heritage and ideological

gravitus of the ANC must not be apermanent contract with the masses.Bread, economic growth and realisationof the material and spiritual interest ofthe Africans should determine our futurein Azania. Notwithstanding politicalgains of the ANC since 1994 the massesought to be made aware of its majorsocio-economic achievements: (1) ANChas inherited an ability to sustain thelegacy of joblessness, inequality andpoverty; (2) a failure on land redistribu-tion; (3) a success in manufacturing liesand swindles; (4) failure to inspire thegenerative power of the rural economy;(5) a failure to create complex, sophisti-cated and resourceful schools for qualityof education to our children; (6) a failureto recognise and honour the contributionof PAC freedom fighters; (7) a refusal torename streets, colleges, universities andprominent buildings, airports and monu-ments after PAC freedom fighters; (8) afailure to bring back the head of KingHintsa and to build a monument oftraditional leaders, kings and chiefs whodied fighting for the total liberation ofAfricans in Azania; (9) a failure to returnthe bones of PAC freedom fighters whodied in exile e.g. John Nyathi Phokelaand others; and (10) excellence in sustain-ing the legacy of corruption, moneylaundering and bureaucratic inefficiency. For many years the people have

invested in the ANC with little or noreturns. The anthology of practical failures and

ideological challenges experienced by theANC government at the point of deliveryis taking its toll, especially in the ruralareas.Salga, Scopa, Public Protector, opposi-

tion parties, Human Rights Commission, church leaders, traditional leaders, NGOsand the civil society should come togeth-er and investigate projects launched byformer President Mbeki which are nowignored by the current Zuma administra-tion.

Litsha race delivers good results#@IRONVUKES#

Despite a public relations nightmarecaused by thieves who smashed intoeight parked cars at the Mandela Park

Stadium during the Khayelitsha 10km RaceAgainst Crime, organisers are adamant itwas a huge success.

Khayelitsha Athletics Club vice chairmanNelson Tshambo said they were alerted byrunners who found their cars damaged.

“It’s major setback but we are happy mostof the runners understand that it’s not theclub’s fault.

“We have reported the matter to the policeand they are following serious leads,” saidTshamno.

He said the race was generally a successand he heaped praises on sponsors whomade the event a possibility.

Zone Fitness, Sasko, Old Mutual, City Vi-sion, Silulo Ulutho, Eyodidi Funeral Serviceand Jive all playe d a role in ensuring thatthe race was a success,

Club secretary Nomfundo Nkohla said therace would be “bigger and bolder next year”.

“We will be sitting in the next coming days

to plot a way forward to ensure we delivera perfect race next year,” she said.

Most of the runners took to social mediasympathsising with the organisers.

Tasmyn Oberholster said the event wasextremely well organised, registration wasa breeze, plenty marshalls, four water sta-tions and police and traffic control werewithin eyesight the whole route.

“And yes once again a few cars were bro-ken into, this is not the clubs fault it happensat every race. Well done guys, see you nextyear,” she said.

Hansie Louw said the running communi-ty creates the possibility of a transformed so-ciety.

“I experienced the kisses of a good, goodFather just being there,” he said.

Kay Motsepe Schools Cup provincial finals kick-offThe months of gruelling qualifiers will cul-minate on Saturday, 5th September at theNyanga Stadium with the six WesternCape regional winners battling it out to becrowned the under-19 Kay MotsepeSchools Cup provincial champions. Thewinner takes home R100 000 and bothteams that play in the final match will com-pete in the national finals taking place inGauteng from 7th to the 10th October.

The teams that have qualified include:Thembalethu Secondary School (Eden Dis-trict), Qhayiya Secondary School (Over-berg District), Ilingelethu SecondarySchool (West Coast District), BeaufortWest Secondary School (Central Karoo),Excelsior High School (Cape Town) and theWinelands district is still to play their fi-nals.

Excelsior and Qhayiya are not new to theprovincial finals having made it this far acouple of times, but for Ilingelethu Second-ary School not only is this their first timecompeting in the provincials but they arecompeting in the tournament for the firsttime as well.

Coach Mfundo Nyunguza came to theschool this year and he has made it his mis-sion to build the soccer teams and enter asmany tournaments as possible.

“The school did have an under 19 teamwhen I can but it was not competitive. Ihave started afresh and select new play-ers,” he said.

“The boys responded well and we nowhave an under-17 and an under-19 team,”he said.

It’s been a great experience for the boys,

although so far things have been relativelyeasy admits Nyunguza. “We didn’t play asmany games as I thought we would (6 intotal), and I think the real challenge startnow in the provincials. We are inexperi-enced at this level and there is a lot at stakeas all the schools will be fighting for theprovincial title.”

They don’t really know what to expect,Nyunguza said. “So we will be taking eachphase as a learning curve and we hope tosoak in as much information as we can fornext year.”

Winning the regionals was a hugeachievement for Nyunguza personally. “Inever thought that I would lead the teamto victory especially as this is my first yearwith the team,” he said. “This has provedto us that if you set your mind on some-thing and put in 100 percent effort you canachieve anything.”

The entire school was surprised to learnthat the team had qualified for the provin-cials for the Kay Motsepe Schools Cup.“They are behind us all the way and we tru-ly appreciate their support, but they arenot putting any pressure on the team towin the provincials,” Nyunguza said.

Preparations for the provincial are nowunderway, with the team training 3 to 4times a week.

“Luckily we have our own field, eventhough it’s not in good condition, but atleast we don’t have to worry about findinga ground to use,” Nyunguza said.

“Another plus is that the boys play forlocal clubs, so if we don’t train after school,we know they will be training there. Iqhayiya High School player being attacked by Mondale High during last year’ fina.l.

UWC’s Sinethemba Blom demonstratedwhy he is a South African amateurwelterweight champion when he beat
