Bali is famous for its beautiful multi-layered rice fields and subak — its traditional farming and irrigation system.

With rapidly growing tourism in southern Bali, where development has swallowed the area’s fertile rice fields and plantations, the island is struggling to retain its remaining agricultural heritage.

Batanyuh Klod village in Marga, tabanan regency, is one of the island’s most well-conserved farming areas.

subak guama — the village’s communal farming organization, manages around 187 hectares of rice fields, which have been protected as sustainable farmland under the village’s customary laws. Rice-field owners are not allowed to sell or transform their rice fields.

late July, a number of farmers from outside the area visited subak guama to learn more about its sustainable farming and the subak.

the visit was organized by Belgium-based VECo, a non-profit organization focused on sustainable and organic farming to create a viable livelihood for farmers.

stunning views of yellowing rice fields greeted the visitors as they arrived in the village.

the residential area consists of dozens of houses with traditional Balinese architecture and spacious yards. the village also has a huge bale banjar (community hall), a soccer field and a cooperative organization.

out of the 187 hectares of rice fields under the auspices of subak guama, every farmer in the village owns a very small plot of no more than 2,500 square meters.

“We get meager yields every harvest, enough for family consumption and religious ceremonies,” said seni, the subak chairman.

to enhance farmers’ incomes, subak guama encourages its member to set aside space to plant seeds.

“this has enabled farmers to get additional income. they sell the seeds to the local cooperative unit,” said seni.

the seedling sites now cover an estimated 40 ha, with production capacity reaching 100 tons per year. the local cooperative unit can procure up to 300 tons annually.

sells seeds to other regencies and even to neighboring islands.

other ventures produce fertilizers and manure for organic fertilizer.

“We have not been able to produce completely organic fertilizer yet,” said seni.

Farmers can also apply for two-year loans to buy cattle, with an upper limit of Rp 3 million (us$216.45) per animal at 2 percent monthly interest. loans with a similar interest rate can also be used to produce seeds and fertilizer. non-collateral loans for a variety of purposes can also be proposed.

the cooperative unit uses smart techniques

to prevent bad loans piling up.“Farmers are required to pay off their debts

after the harvest. those who fail to do so are sanctioned, preventing them from getting water from the communal irrigation system and free fertilizer.”

tolerance is, of course, extended to farmers whose children are sick or who are conducting expensive religious ceremonies, such as cremations.

Village cooperative units are sustainable businesses that have received funding support from the regional and provincial administrations since 2002.

the grant for subak guama, Rp 843 million, was used to finance three community programs — integrated paddy management (ICM), integration of farming and cattle (Cls) and home-based industries (KuM).

the village’s cattle herd has grown from 160 to 500 animals. the farming and rural business ventures in the village offer job opportunities and income-generating ventures improve the living conditions of its population.

the visiting farmers and guests were impressed with the village’s prosperity.

the community-based festival will feature a three-day musical extravaganza, from Aug. 14-16, with some of the country’s best jazz musicians. the line-up includes Indonesia’s guitar prodigy tohpati, rising starlet Raisa and Indonesian Idol finalist Kunto Aji.

“tohpati’s power trio, tohpati Bertiga, will surprise the audience with their new musical exploration, while Raisa, I believe, will draw a huge audience,” Jazz Market’s program director and co-founder, Jappy sanger, said.

In addition to these well-known names, Jazz Market also features musical talent from all over Indonesia, including Voice of Krishna, Kontemporer Perkusi, Bali gitar Club, Rampak Kendang, Bagus Mazasupa, Vagabond, sound of Mine, Rio sidik, nita Aasrtsen trio, Balawan, Dialog Dini Hari and sapta Rare.

“the line-up reflects the diverse spectrum of vibes from the country’s jazz landscape. such diversity is our effort to attract a wider audience demographic,” Jappy added.

the performer line-up is not the only key strength of the festival. Its main venue, taman Bhagawan, provides the festival with more than just a majestic backdrop. set on a 1.8 hectare plot of land, taman Bhagawan has a 100-meter stretch of white sandy beach, spacious lawns, well-manicured trees and a swimming pool, which provides a perfect environment for families with children.

“this is the reason why this festival is an attractive event for families. Music lovers can bring their children to the festival and they can listen to good music without having to sacrifice the opportunity to spend quality time with their children,” festival event director and co-founder Astari siswanto said, adding that becoming a family-friendly event had always been at the top of the festival’s to-do list from day one.

Children will definitely have a good time in the festival’s dedicated Kids Corner, in front of Paon Restaurant joglo, where games, cracker-

eating and marble competitions will be held on a daily basis.

In the past, taman Bhagawan has been graced by the performances of world-famous artists, including American singer-songwriter Jason Mraz, who performed an outdoor concert before an audience of 4,000 music enthusiasts; Earth, Wind and Fire; and Incognito.

Jazz Market was conceived in nov. 2010 during a series of conversations between Jappy, an avid jazz enthusiast, and Astari, a culturalist and the proprietor of taman Bhagawan. Both envisioned a cultural event combining jazz concerts, visual and fine arts and culinary festivity. the first festival took place in 2011. Ever since, it has been growing into one of the island’s finest cultural happenings, booking more than 5,500 spectators in 2014.

“things that set us apart from the other festivals are the fact that our festival is a mixture of those three elements and our commitment to be a platform for local talent. up to 99 percent of the participating artists are locals,” Jappy said.

Another highlight of the Jazz Market is the culinary showcases organized by ACMI (I love Indonesian Foods), an association of ambassadors of Indonesian traditional cuisines, Indonesian chefs and culinary enthusiasts. the showcases feature food tasting, culinary discussions, a jamu (herbal drink) showcase and cooking classes for kids.

It is harvest season for coffee farmers in Kintamani in Bangli regency, a cool area located 900 meters above sea level.

Ketut Jati, a farmer in Belantih village, was jubilant to see his coffee plants flowering. the red and yellow coffee cherries hanging from stems dense with fresh, green leaves created a beautiful view for farmers and visitors alike.

to add to the pastoral attraction, there were rows of orange trees with ripe fruit ready to pick.

“the majority of farmers also plant orange

trees along with the coffee plants,” said Jati.this double-planting system has created a

flavor in the coffee fruit that is unique to the area.

Belantih village borders three regencies — Bangli, Badung and Buleleng, all recognized as Bali’s center for coffee plantations and production, which produce internationally recognized coffee, alongside other renowned Indonesian coffees such as gayo coffee from Aceh, Ijen coffee from Central Java and toraja coffee from the toraja highlands in south sulawesi.

Kintamani coffee is planted in the three areas — Kintamani (Bangli), Plaga (Badung) and sukasada (Buleleng), encompassing 23,000 hectares.

Kintamani was the first Indonesian coffee to obtain certification from MPIg, the geographical Indication Protection society, in november 2008.

this indicates that Kintamani coffee is produced only in its native areas in the three regencies and is not found anywhere else in the world.

Dewa Raka, chairman of the MPIg Kintamani cooperative unit, said there were 3,600 farmers

registered in 64 farmers’ groups. “But only 300 have joined the cooperative unit.”

Raka said by joining the cooperative, farmers would obtain various benefits, including ways to fairly market their crops and increase their income.

He explained that Kintamani coffee production was managed under the subak Abian traditional system.

Every year, the cooperative unit procures 4,000 tons of ripe cherry beans from local farmers. these are dried thoroughly at the cooperative’s procuring and drying center in Catur village, near Kintamani, before being shipped to destinations such as surabaya in East Java.

“this area has become a processing center, as well as a learning center, for farmers and individuals eager to gain information and knowledge about traditional coffee processing methods.”

Kintamani coffee is exported to Europe and the us by an export company in surabaya.

Recently, around 30 farmers from East nusa tenggara and south sulawesi, under the invitation of VECo, a Belgium-based non-profit organization focused on sustainable farming, visited the Kintamani coffee plantations and drying center to gain first-hand knowledge from the Kintamani farmers and, of course, to taste the delicious Kintamani coffee on-site.

As Bali’s streets are progressively getting more and more crowded, tourists and residents on the island are turning to go-Jek, a mobile app-

powered motorcycle taxi (ojek) service, to get to their destination faster.

You may have noticed motorcyclists driving around the island’s southern areas wearing bright green jacket and helmets. these are the go-Jek drivers.

they provide not only transportation but also deliver take-away food orders from restaurants, documents from offices and shopping from shopping outlets.

go-Jek is basically a social enterprise that is attempting to solve the underemployment

issue by partnering with a group of experienced and trustworthy ojek drivers to serve customers.

“We are revolutionizing the logistics and transportation industry by providing these drivers with mobile smart phones and mobile banking to enable them to work anytime, anywhere,” said go-Jek brand director Michaelangelo Moran.

the drivers are equipped with Android devices, one function of which is to identify the closest driver for each order through a geo-location algorithm, to minimize delivery time.

With the go-Food application, customers can choose from the “best seller” menu or “near me” function to order from the closest restaurants. the go-Jek driver pays for the food first and then delivers it to your destination, when you can pay for the delivery.

the idea of go-Jek came about when the CEo nadiem Makarim was riding on the back of an ojek in the snarled-up traffic of Jakarta and was eventually established in 2010.

since the go-Jek mobile application was introduced in January 2015, it has had more than 1.6 million downloads, making it the number one app in the transportation category in google Play and the lifestyle category on the ios chart.

After serving Jakarta, Bandung and surabaya, the company is excited to bring

the service to Bali, where they are not only improving the livelihood of drivers but also providing a service that locals, tourists, as well as businesses, will benefit from. there are currently more than 20,000 registered drivers.

the ARMA museum in ubud once again played host to the inspirational and unique ubud Village Jazz Festival at the weekend. now into its third year,

the event continues to attract artists and jazz lovers from all around the world, who together celebrate an event loaded with enthralling performances spread over two days at one of Bali’s most alluring venues.

Having taken in a couple of the pre-event gigs, including a spectacular set by grammy award winning oran Etkin, who performed for the jazz loving, wine sipping posse at VIn+ seminyak, I was greatly looking forward to the weekend. the weather looked set to be fair and the set list outstanding, with Friday headlined by Dwiki Dharmawan and saturday by another Indonesian legend, the irrepressible Indra lesmana.

For this festival, however, it was the prospect of renewing my love affair with the music of the legendary Miles Davis that was really getting me tuned in. For me, indeed for many, Miles Davis was not just one of the greatest

jazz musicians that has graced the Earth, he was an inspirational figure — a man born in a time when the world surely needed a hero. His postwar anthology is a history lesson, charting the hopes, fears and exasperations a black musician faced.

For the ubud Village Jazz Festival, acclaimed Dutch trumpeter Michael Varekamp brought us MIlEs!, which not only celebrates the great man’s life, but is a project that aims to bring Davis back into our lives and introduce his music and passion to a whole new generation of artists and audiences. MIlEs! is one of a series of educational and tribute programs

Varekamp is touring with. the next is louIs!, which will premier in early 2016.

on the night, Varekamp was joined by a host of talented international musicians, including ubud Village Jazz Festival veteran Ben van den Dungen, whose soulful saxophone, along with the spine-tingling trumpet of Varekamp himself, delivered a catalog of some of Davis’ finest works; a reminder of what jazz is all about and a peek into over four decades of musical brilliance. the set closed, somewhat surprisingly, with a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Human nature”. It was a great performance and happily my affair with Davis is well and truly back on.

space, as always, prevents me waxing lyrical about the fabulous international and local artists who served up a jazz lover’s dream,

but I can’t leave without a special mention of the vocal talents of ubud Village Jazz Festival favorite, the delightful Dian Pratiwi. Dian, who played with her brother Yuri Mahatma and sister-in-law Astrid sulaiman, was sensational and her stylized rendition of “Tik Tik Tik Bunyi Hujan”, a well-loved Indonesian children’s favorite, clearly touched the hearts of all who saw it.

there are many reasons I love joining the annual ubud Village Jazz Festival — its location, its focus on only modern and traditional jazz, the exciting summer schools and workshops the team provides throughout and, of course, the energy and commitment of all the musicians — both local and international.

But most of all, I love it because I know that next year I can do it all over again.
