Dear Parishioners,
Catechesis is an important work of the church. Some people may wonder what that word means. Catechesis is basically the teaching ministry of the church. If we want to broaden out the definition even more, we would say that it is the business of forming people in the faith. We need to help people grow
into disciples of Jesus Christ.
At Sacred Heart we have dozens of catechists. We start teaching the preschoolers about Christianity when they are around three and we continue to learn about our faith until we die. I remember my good friend Fr. Dick Bresnahan. He was in the last days of his life and I went to visit him. He did not want to talk about his health. He asked me what I was reading. His religious education was literally womb to tomb.
This is Catechetical Sunday. We bless all the teachers who will be ministering in our educational programs in the upcoming academic year. I ask for your prayers for them. I thank those who have given their time through the years to share their faith in the role of catechist. I challenge anyone who has not shared their time in this ministry to consider doing so.
Parents fulfill a special role in catechesis. I would ask that you support the teachers in our Catholic schools and other religious education program. It is always a task to raise up a new generation of religious educators. It is easier if whatever is taught in the classroom is reinforced in the home.
Let’s have a great year of learning!
Blessings, Fr. Mark
P.S. I will be on the upcoming Cursillo team for women. I would encourage anyone in our parish to make a Cursillo Weekend. A Cursillo is a shore course in Christianity. These weekends are held at Christ the King Church. The next weekend for Men is September 19-22nd. The next weekend for Women is October 17-20th. For more information call the Cursillo secretary at 737-1979. Or, let me know and I will be glad to arrange for someone in our parish to speak to you.

Bovard Studios BUS TRIP PLANNED The wheels on the bus
go round-n-round.
So many parishioners have asked and are interested in how our beautiful stained-glass windows are being restored. Well, guess what? You will now have the opportunity to visit in person the Bovard Studios in Fairfield, Iowa. The trip is planned for Wednesday, November 6, 2019. It is a 2 hour and 20 min ride, so the Bus will depart around 6:00am from Sacred Heart. Look for a sign-up sheet to be posted in the church in upcoming weeks. There will be more details to follow. For any questions, please contact Don Lewis at 309-230-6200.
Dear Parishioners, In January we publicly launched our Today Tomorrow Together Campaign. Since then it has been an eventful 9 months. This capital campaign was a joint effort among the parishes of Sacred Heart and Christ the King and Seton School. The three set a collective goal of $5 million. To date they have received cash and pledges of over $4 million.
To meet the needs and ambitious goals of Sacred Heart we set a parish goal of $3 million. As of September 1st, Sacred Heart has received pledges of nearly $1.9 million. This significant accomplishment is a result of the generous donations many of you have provided.
As a parish we are also committed to helping Seton School achieve their goal of $875,000. To date Sacred Heart parishioners have pledged an additional $400,000 to make needed improvements to the Seton facilities.
As we began this campaign, we outlined a three-tiered approach for Sacred Heart. Tier 1 includes $1 million to be used for tuck-pointing of Sacred Heart Church and to restore our stained-glass windows. The tuck-pointing is now complete. The stained-glass windows restoration is underway with the hope to complete by September of 2020.
Tier 2 of our drive was $300,000. This money will be used to relocate the priest’s living space. The money is pledged, and we are laying the groundwork for the possible move of the priests into the Lee Parish Center. Space is available now that Seton has relocated all students into the school buildings.
Tier Three goal is $1.7 million. We have about $600,000 in pledges for this goal. As we receive additional pledges we hope to put an addition on our church to include a protected drop-off area for our parishioners, larger bathrooms to assist the physically challenged and a parish gathering space. This new building would sit where the present rectory is. The current rectory would be demolished due to the large expense required to continue repairing and using it.
As I opened with, we have made a lot of progress in the first nine months of a three-year campaign. Raising $1.9 million of our $3 million goal is a HUGE accomplishment.
The capital campaign committee and I would like to express our gratitude to those who have helped our parish accomplish so much in so little time. A listing of those who have donated to this campaign as of September 1st is enclosed. Please note some people chose to remain anonymous.
I encourage everyone to attend the commemoration of the laying of the cornerstone of Sacred Heart. This will be held October 20th (details about this celebration will be published over the weeks ahead). This parish gathering is a celebration of our history. It honors the commitment and work of parishioners who went before us. It also recognizes you, our current parishioners, and the generosity you put forth that will allow us to go forward into the next 100 years.
Our prayer is that the Lord will continue to bless our plans as we seek to achieve all the goals that are so necessary for the future health of our parish. May God who has begun the good work bring it to fruition.
In addition, we wish to thank Fr. Levitt from Christ the King Parish and his parishioners who have given towards the Visitation Window
Blessings, Fr. Mark DeSutter Pastor
As hard as we try, we may have missed a name or two. Please accept our apology and let us know immediately so corrections can be made. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to work together to build the Kingdom of God.

When you are away from Sacred Heart, our expenses continue. If you missed your offertory donation recently, we would
appreciate it you could make it up. Please remember Sacred Heart in your estate planning. Bequests are very important to the financial future of Sacred Heart.
God Our Creator,
We turn to you as the Christian communities of Christ the King, Sacred Heart and Seton Catholic School. Our ancestors in faith built our communities and the buildings that house our worship, education and fellowship. All of their efforts were rooted in their
faith in Jesus Christ your Son.
Inspired by the Spirit, and because of our great need, we are now engaged in a capital campaign that will enhance our mission as we anticipate the coming of the next
generation of Catholics. Please bless our efforts as we make this leap of faith. Allow us to succeed in our tasks which are undertaken because of our great love for you. Help us
overcome every obstacle. With your grace, we serve you today, tomorrow and together.
We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

ANNUAL DIOCESAN APPEAL (ADA) AS OF: SEPTEMBER 8
The active phase of our Annual Diocesan Appeal has ended for the year. We have $108,075.06 pledged towards our goal of $142,413.00 with 402 Families pledging. Anyone can donate to offset this shortfall throughout
the year. We would like to close the gap because we will have to make up the difference from our ordinary collections. Thank you to all who shared their donations.
SMA THANK YOU LETTER
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On behalf of SMA Fathers, I want to simply say thank you to Fr. Mark and the Sacred Heart family of Moline!
I am particularly indebted to all of you, for the superb hospitality I’ve experienced in serving you over the past two years. A big hug and thank you to the dedicated staff of Lee Parish Center.
We, the SMAs, are grateful for all of your financial contributions and prayerful support. Your donations and prayers make you partners with us in Africa and abroad. The recipients of your charity are always grateful, knowing that they are not alone.
May God, the Father of goodness, who commanded us to love one another as brothers and sisters, bless your families with his Presence and look kindly on all your needs.
Finally, let me leave you with the blessing of St. Paul to the Philippians, for being collaborators with SMA in the Vineyard of the Lord:
“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1: 3 – 6).
Our special thanks and gratitude to the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith, and to the Diocese of Peoria, for their continual collaboration with SMA Fathers.
To date your donations have totaled $6,233.02. I am so grateful for your generosity. Thank you.

FUNERAL ACOLYTES NEEDED Funeral Acolytes are adult members of our parish family who assist the Presider with all funerals here at Sacred Heart. Their presence expresses our prayerful solidarity with those mourning the death of a loved one. Volunteers are needed to assist in this Ministry. If you are willing to help and can give an hour of your time to those families who have lost a loved one, then this is the Ministry for you. Training is done hands-on with another minister. If you are available, please call Mr. Don Lewis at 309-230-6200 to inquire more information.
