Shortage ofquarry reservesis a growingproblemThe quarrying industry has failed to replenish aggregates production formany years with consents for new reserves. This is now having a seriousimpact on the industry.

A major new report by industry marketing specialist, BDS MarketingResearch Ltd, estimates the volumes of reserves and reserves life at eachoperating and inactive pit and quarry in Great Britain. It concludes that, ofthe largest regions, the south east and Yorkshire have the lowest sand andgravel reserves life. Areas such as London, West Sussex, Hampshire andSouth Yorkshire are particularly badly affected.

The problem is not limited to these regions. Elsewhere, Warwickshire andthe Cotswold Water Park also suffers from a shortage of reserves.

BDS has identified that over 100 pits and quarries could close in thecountry, within the next five years, unless new reserves are granted.Commenting on the report, principal consultant, Julian Clapp said 'Many ofthese sites will be the subject of an application to extend reserves. However, some quarries have no physical reserves left that are adjacent tothe site. With markets picking up strongly, aggregates companies need toget their planning applications submitted soon to ensure continuousaggregates supply'.

By company, BDS believes that Hanson has above the industry average forsand and gravel reserves life, whilst Aggregate Industries is thought tohave slightly below the industry average. In terms of volumes, BDSestimates that Lafarge Tarmac has the most consented reserves, followedby Hanson and Cemex.

The reserves position is much better in crushed rock, although here to,there are some local shortages. One concern is the future supply ofnationally important high psv stone from quarries in North Yorkshire.

In crushed rock, the position of Aggregate Industries is believed to bebetter as it is thought to have the highest volume of consented reserves.BDS has identified Aggregate Industries as having a particularly strongreserves position in Scotland and the south west

The order of the companies with the highest volume of crushed rockreserves is believed to be Aggregate Industries, Lafarge Tarmac andHanson.

Huge screen is the star of the Don Valley Engineering Open Day

Don Valley Engineering (DVE) hasrecently held an open event for twodays at their Doncaster HQ to exhibit ahuge array of screens which are to bedelivered to Wolf Minerals for theirHemerdon project on the south coast.

Star of the show was a gigantic 2-deck ScrubberScreen. Weighing in at 30.8 tons, this giant screenhas an overall deck area of 64.8m2 and a designfeed tonnage of 1292t/h. Selected by GREngineering Services as a preferred supplier this isone of 10 screens that DVE have specifically builtfor the Wolf Minerals project, of which nine wereon show, with the 'giant' screen running in a testrig inside the works.

DVE was established in 1947 and has expandedand evolved over the years gathering a wealth ofexperience in all aspects of engineering; inparticular the processing and handling of bulkmaterials and the building of specialist screening, centrifuging and malting's' equipment, makingthe company one of the leading UK suppliers intheir chosen fields.

Roger Allen - MD (DVE), commented, “The ideabehind the open day was to showcase this rangeof screens to all users of screening technology inthe UK today. Most of the major companies havebeen invited and are attending and this event willillustrate our prowess and manufacturingcapabilities of a huge range of screeningmachines built here in Doncaster, in the UK.

The open day was well attended and included a visit from RosieWinterton, local MP for Doncaster Central. After a short touraccompanied by Roger Allen, Rosie, commented, “I am extremely proudthat DVE have won this prestigious contract, which has put Doncaster onthe map in terms of having built the largest screen in the UK, which isalso further underlined by the importance of this very high profile projectnear Plymouth.”

Rosie continued, “I always like to work with local companies and Rogerand I have been discussing local recruitment and certification issues and Iwill work closely with the company to see if I can be of assistance butquite frankly this is a pretty good company that Roger has outlined veryclearly, by diversification over the years hence its current success.Obviously this is because the company has not sat back with the demiseof traditional industry in the local area; it has looked forward anddeveloped key areas very successfully. Although I shall talk with theDepartment of Business and the UKTI and look at any difficult overseasareas, by and large it is quite clear that the DVE's current success is downto the innovation and the high quality that DVE has a reputation for andme being here today to help promote it is something I'm very happy todo.”

Weir Minerals has launched two newconfigurations for its GEMEX® belt-tensioning system, integrating thesystem with two more of its most popularpump ranges.

The GEMEX® tensioner has beenincorporated into updated versions of thecompany's latest and most advancedheavy-duty slurry pump, the WARMAN®

WBH® centrifugal slurry pump and themedium-duty WARMAN® MU pump.

These are the first combined pump-and-tensionerpackages to be added by Weir Minerals since theintegrated package was designed for the company'sbest-selling pump, the WARMAN® AH® pump, in 2013.The GEMEX® system was launched in the Europeanmarket in 2012 after Weir Minerals acquired Sweden-based Gema Industri.

By integrating a hydraulically-adjustable and mechanically-lockable motor platform onto the pumps' bearingassemblies, the system removes the need to realign themotor each time the drive belt needs to be replaced, reducing the downtime required from hours to minutes.

Tony G. Locke, managing director of Weir Minerals Europe, said: “All too often we see the performance of our pumpscompromised by poorly-adjusted belt-drive systems. Whenproperly tensioned and aligned, a belt system is one of thebest ways to drive a pump. However, the need to replacethe belt periodically is a major drawback, requiringdowntime and increasing the possibility of incorrecttensioning or alignment, leading to poor performance.

“The GEMEX belt-tensioning system solves this problemassociated with belt-driven systems by making beltreplacement quick and easy and ensuring perfecttensioning and alignment every time. This means pumpsrun more efficiently, last longer and require lessmaintenance.

“While the system can be used with almost any belt-drivepump, the integrated packages we now offer for our mostpopular pumps provide a solution that works straight outof the box with no additional set-up work required.

“This is an important part of our ongoing commitment toensuring our products perform at optimum levels, whatever the industry, and our customers can also rely onus to provide aftermarket support and expert advice fortheir equipment.”

The GEMEX® belt tensioner has historically been used inthe mining and paper industries. However, more recently ithas become popular in other sectors which use belttransmissions, including pharmaceuticals, hospitals andpublic buildings.

New UK Director for MAC UK -Adrian Wood

The HUB team recently went tovisit the METSO UK Operation inRugby to talk to the new Directorof MAC UK, Ireland and EuropeanDistribution - Adrian Wood. DavidRoberts fired some questions atthe man now at the helm of MACUK.

DR: Could you outline your career with theMetso organisation to date?

AW: My career started in 1999 as a UK sales manager andthen over time I was promoted to product manager for mobilescreens. Then five years ago I was offered the chance to moveto Tampere in Finland to organise the move of the mobilescreen manufacture from NI to Finland. Following that Ibecame responsible for sales support for our crushing andscreening equipment organisation globally. Then in January2014 I was offered the chance to return home to run the UKorganisation and distribution for Europe.

DR: Does the UK operation involve externalpartners?

AW: Yes in the UK we have an external partner through whowe distribute our track mounted equipment rather thanhaving our own sales and service organisation. This externalpartner facilitates the sales and service of our equipment.

DR: How do you see the company adapting andgrowing?

AW: The goals with the UKorganisation - it's been the

same for most companies, thelast three or four years in the UK

have been very difficult and ourorganisation is no exception tothat. So we have restructured the

organisation basicallydownsized and now as the

market begins to pick upthe target is to developthe organisation, ourlevel of service, to

further

expand our level of coverage to facilitate and meet themarket needs, so as the markets develop the organisation willdevelop with it.

DR: Have you seen an increase in marketactivity?

AW: Yes although very slight, I've only been back in the UKfor three months so I'm still catching up, but there is adefinite improvement and a far more positive feeling thanwhen I left five years ago and when I have visitedsubsequently. So yes there is movement and listening toeconomists and the discussion on growth they tell us we areback in the days of 2007. But in general the growth in theconstruction business is still quite small, if you look at thecharts and how the business is developing it's very tentativeat the moment but there is definitely a feeling of positivityand that things are improving and will continue to improve.

DR: What is your view on the current mergersand the need to consolidate on capitalequipment?

AW: Well I've been back three months and I've spoken to theguy who is responsible for the mobile equipment side of thebusiness and his thoughts are that the contractors arefulfilling the extra need which is pretty much the same as itwas in 2006/7. I don't think that there is a shift as thisoccurred over 6-7 years ago and that has continued but thereis still investment in fixed equipment. The replacementbusiness though is an area where I hope there will be growthand development as there has been very little development inthe last five years.

DR: We've noticed in the in-house Metsomagazine a huge focus on H&S, can you expandon that?

AW: Having been abroad and worked for the business forsome time I've witnessed Metso's focus on H&S over the lastten years increase dramatically, and it's great! Ten years agoit was what you could get away with and I think mostmanufacturers were the same. Whereas now we actuallydevelop new products that basically start with the focus onH&S and no longer about meeting the regulation; it's nowabout making things significantly safer to work on. Forexample we are just about to launch a new Impactor and partof the process was to put platforms and other safety devicesin place so when an engineer needed to work on it, it was

Hub Issue 30 23/7/14 11:20 Page 10

News

www.hub-4.com | p11 |

completely safe. Years ago it was more what do we need todo to avoid any problems with the local H&S officer. Now H&Sand the environment are a huge focus for the company.

For instance the new generation Lokotrack machines usebetween 30-40% less fuel than their predecessors so againthere is a huge focus within the company on the environmentas well. We have a large H&S organisation which isresponsible for developing our LTIF performance and all theother relevant criteria that we have. At the moment we are atzero LTIF in the UK and have not had an accident for a longtime so our policies are working efficiently.

DR: Tell us about the current product range andoutline how the new LT220D is being received?

AW: We launched the LT22OD in Vegas back in March and inmy old job I gave the press conference at the show for it. Ithas been exhibited at Hillhead with our distributor GarriockBros and it's a revolutionary product. It's the first cone crusherand screen that are actually on the same chassis which iseasily transportable. The real key for the product is 'easilytransportable' because we have had for many years like someof our competitors a cone and a screen on the same plant butit was always difficult to transport , this is easy to transport! It's a very radical development you put the two productstogether you have massively lower fuel consumption than thetwo split, so you have big savings - it's a game changer!

DR: Are there any other machine developments?

AW: Yes it has a big brother the LT330D which is now beingbuilt and we also have had lots of innovation in terms of ourunit equipment in the last 24 months. We have a newImpactor NP15 and the great thing about this is that althoughMetso over the years have compromised our Impact Crushers,(we were a great player 10-15 years ago) and because thefocus has been heavily on fitting an Impactor onto mobileequipment it became compromised. So instead of the focus onit being a Secondary Impactor it becomes a compromise, itcan be a Primary, it can be a Tertiary. So the NP15 is really astep away from that which is purely focussed on a stationeryImpactor so it's a pure Secondary/Tertiary Impactor; a focus toget involved in the stationary Impactor market again. But theother big thing with it is a focus on safety, such as 'bolt-on'platforms making it very simple to work on. So it's a big stepforward with regard to our stationary Impactor crusher range.

We also have a new C Jaw, mid to large range where thefocus is very much on the volume of the chamber. There is alot of talk which is better, width against depth. But really thefocus has to be on what the actual capacity of the chamber isbecause its common sense if you think about it. The biggeryour chamber is the more rock you have, the more throughputyou have, so long as you crush it. The other thing is your nipangle, so the lower your nip angle the better your crushabilitybecause basically you are taking lots of little hits at it, rather

than taking a big bite of a big apple, you nibble at it. But theproblem is the lower your nip angle the higher your crusherhas to be because obviously you need the length of chamberto get to the minimum setting you need. Therefore it has asmaller nip angle than we have ever had before, ensuringbetter crushing. The new C Jaw has a bigger chamber and abigger stroke, providing more force and power. This has beena pretty big change for our mid to large range which is a bigvolume business for us. With focus on hard rock this range isthe process of being completely revamped and changed overthe last 3 years, with one more model to follow next yearwhich will complete the new range.

We've also been doing a lot of work on our Cone Crushers. We have the HP Cone and I think we are the only company inthe world that has both types of Cone Crushers. So you havethe head supported very similar to the H series that Sandvikuse and we also have the bottom supported which is similarto Pegson and Terex etc. We have been developing our HPXrange which has bigger throw, bigger force, bigger reductionratio and we have also done the same as our GP Cones andnow have new products in the GP220, GP330 which againhave greater throw and capacity. In fact in going almost backfull circle the LT220D is actually our first track mounted coneproduct that you have the alternative of choice between thetwo types of cone. Normally we offer a machine and we stickwith that specification and anything else is a 'special build'whereas with the LT220D and the LT330D you have thealternative as standard which is a big step forward for us interms of a company. We offer these alternatives so we havethe HP200 and the GP220 as either or. It's something we arevery excited about and we are expecting big things from it.The first LT220 has stayed in the USA after Conexpo and hasbeen on trials and has from what I've seen on the report beenworking very well. The first LT330 is now delivered andworking in Finland; actually the whole process started withthe Finnish customer saying I would like this product andconsequently we developed the range accordingly on therealisation of how good it would be!

DR: Finally, can you tell us what projects Metsoare currently involved in?

AW: Well we are working on a lot of exciting projects whichshould come to fruition in the next 12 months which whencompleted will be very good for us.

We took a long hard look at how as the market has becomemore demanding and Metso has responded and over time hasdeveloped from being an equipment supplier into becoming aservices solution provider, which has been a hugedevelopment and is now a firm company philosophy of Metso.

Hillhead a great success forEdge Innovate.

Now that the buzz of Hillhead 2014 hasbeen and gone, it is time to reflect onthe great success of the show! After anexciting year in which EDGE Innovatehave introduced an array of additionsto their extensive product portfolio,Hillhead 2014 proved to be the perfectplatform to reveal the new RTU220Radial Truck Unloader to the market.

The newest addition to the EDGE materialshandling range comes in the form of the RTU220which can be utilised in various applications and isas comfortable on the port as it is in the harshenvironment of a quarry. The RTU220 providesoperators with a greater efficient loading methodand allows operators to continuously load directlyfrom trucks into train wagons or barges.

In addition to the new RTU220, EDGE exhibited an impressive range ofmachines including the upgraded TRM622 Trommel and LTS75 Low-LevelFeeder Tracked Stacker, all of which attracted huge amounts of interestfrom visitors to the EDGE stand C20.

The new up-graded TRM622 is a multi-purpose screening trommel thatprovides superior flexibility to suit various applications. Greater versatilityis now offered via notable upgrades that include a build in working angleof 5°, lower feed in height for ease of feeding via smaller wheeledloaders, harder wearing brushes for improved mesh cleaning and a largerfeed opening for material transferring to the trommel drum. A largerpowerunit canopy provides additional space to house larger fuel andhydraulic tanks whilst providing greater access for servicing. Designed formaximum productivity, the TRM622 incorporates a heavy dutyconstruction design and zero spillage.

The EDGE LTS75 introduces operators to a solution for the stockpiling andtransferring of hard rock and ore for the mining and quarrying industry. The LTS is a long life, low maintenance Apron Feeder Stockpiler; uniquelydesigned to allow for low level loading of material from the largestwheel loaders. The huge hopper capacity and heavy duty apron padsmean the LTS can easily cope with the extreme demands of any quarryingor mining application. With a high rapid set-up time and impressivestockpiling capacities, the LTS is a versatile conveyor that can be used ina wide range of applications.

The three day event held at Hillhead Quarry, Buxton proved to be themost successful Hillhead show the company has attended to date, withvisitors and orders exceeding all expectations. EDGE Managing DirectorDarragh Cullen would like to express a huge thank you to all who visitedthe stand during the show.

SmicoSymons enjoysuccess atHillhead

DR: Can you tell our readers a little about the historyand when you got involved?

EH: In 2007 I purchased Smico from a gentleman called Randle Stonerand then in 2009 we purchased Symons Screens and moved it fromTempe, Arizona to our base in Oklahoma City. Since I bought it we haveincreased the workforce from approximately 24 employees to 125 overthe last eight years.

DR: What is the history behind Symons?

EH: Symons dates back to the 1800's, we actually have the handwritten autobiography of the Symons Brothers, which containsinformation on when they sold the crusher to Metso; we have thewhole story and the detail of when they sold it to them in 1938. Theywent in there and asked for $2 million which is the equivalent of $48million today. That was a lot of money back then and they neverthought that Nordberg would complete the deal, but they did andwrote them a cheque. So at that point Metso took that side of thecompany and in 2009 we bought the screening side.

The Symons Brothers were originally in North Hollywood, California andthey were purchased by a company called XMS out in Tempe, Arizonawho eventually filed for bankruptcy, consequently we bought them outof bankruptcy and brought it back to the market.

DR: What is your background?

EH: I used to be the Director of Operations for a logistics company, weused to move shipments around the world and I just decided one day Ididn't want to do it because I didn't want to be in the service industry, Iwanted to be involved in manufacture. I established a business inOklahoma City which was very successful and then started looking formanufacturers to buy and in 2007 I found Smico and since thencompany has gone from success to success.

At the recent Hillhead show DavidRoberts of the HUB went to meet ErickHeald CEO of Smico Symons to chatabout the history and where thecompany was today.

Although 2009-2010 were pretty tough afterthe world economy crashed, especially withcapital equipment which is the first thingeveryone cuts from their budget. In the Statesnow we are seeing an upturn but we feel ourreal growth has come from all theconglomerates coming in and buying all ourcompetitors and so once they came in they haveno real feel for it, so with us it's a bigopportunity to take that business. Since we arestill privately owned we don't look at the dollaras much as a big conglomerate.

DR: Can you tell us about what you have brought toHillhead?

EH: The reason we brought Symons Screens here is Aggregate Industries(AI) bought a couple of them from us and they are looking to buy a couplemore. Originally what used to happen in Europe was Symons had anagreement with Stothert and Pitt in the UK and they used to build and sellthem and a licensing agreement went back to Symons in the States andthat's how it all began. Since Stothert and Pitt finished no one has been hereto service those machines and so with us finding AI and them finding us afew years ago it's been great for us to come back over here and findequipment we didn't know existed.

DR: What projects in the UK are you currently involved in?

EH: AI has been pretty good to us through the Symons brand; through theSmico brand we have already done business with some bulk handlingcustomers'. We do have a current project with AI at Torr Works in Somersetwhere they are looking to replace seven - F type Symons screens, whichwere originally installed in the early 1970s. The F screens have eachaveraged over 1 million tons per year since installation. For the last 20 yearsthey have had no support with parts and they didn't know anyone existeduntil one of their directors found us on the internet which resulted in uslooking for a distributorship in the UK so we could at least have someone onthe ground all the time.

DR: How did the partnership with Plant Supply start?

EH: Well Plant supply found out and approachedus, so after a meeting in the States we made

a deal and for the last two years it's beenpretty good. We see potential growth inEurope and particularly in the UK with usfinding all these old machines and one ofour tasks is to ensure that parts andservice are now available through PS,instead of them going to their local

machine shop and having them made. That's what AI were having to do

weld everything up and send it out formachining and now parts are readily

available that will be good for the industry. There are around 100-150 machines inEurope which represents a couple of$million in parts alone. So all thosemachines can now be serviced with spareparts through our UK distributor PlantSupply Ltd. Plant Supply is also the sole

European and Middle East Distributor for Smico Symons products.

RUD SideflexSidewallProtection atHillhead2014 Hillhead 2014 saw RUD Chains Ltddisplaying its advanced tyre-protection chains and latestinnovative Sideflex solution, which isan inventive and robust device thatoffers a practical solution to the ever-present challenge of sidewall damageto dumptruck tyres. Also on show fromthe company was a range of completeconveyor systems for bucket elevators, scraper conveyors, drag chainconveyors, screw conveyors and apronfeeders.

RUD Chains latest innovation Sideflex wasextremely popular at Hillhead, providing a cost-effective solution to the very well-known problemof sidewall damage to expensive and valuabledumptruck tyres, for construction and miningequipment in particular earthmoving machines.

Anyone in the industry knows the continuousvulnerability truck tyres face to sidewall damagefrom haul road rock debris and accidental impact.Tyre protection chains would not be a compatibleoption; slowing the trucks down, raising fuelconsumption, damage to tyres through blowoutand delays in production time, a solution wasneeded.

Sideflex is an easy to fit, lightweight shield whichsimply deflects rock and debris from the tyre wall. The device fits firmly within the wheel hub andalmost brushes the ground preventing rock anddebris from penetrating the tyre wall. Protectivearms radiate from a central retaining ring andform a shield covering the sidewall.

The Sideflex components are quick and easy toassemble; the mounting ring is simply secured tothe rim assembly through a selection of specificadapter nuts and extension supports. Tensioningbrackets are installed around the rim base toguarantee smooth and even rotation of the shieldsegments. The shield segments are then attachedto the mounting ring to offer complete sidewallprotection of your tyre.

RUD offer standard and specialised applicationsto meet the specific demands and requirementsof your working environments. As a leadingmanufacturer and innovative product provideryou can be confident in the decision that RUDwill deliver top quality products, unrivalledsupport and technical advice to help meet eventhe most demanding circumstances.

SpriderLaunch inthe UK atHillheadwith PlantSupply Ltd

Mogensen experience their bestever Hillhead exhibition

Tommy Sjogren, CEO of Sprider wason hand on the Plant Supply stand atHillhead to demo the all new SpriderAsphalt laying System. Thisinnovation in efficiency means thatsmall areas can be asphalted muchmore efficiently, all you have to do isfold the Sprider arm down and startthe screw to feed the asphalt out.Using a Sprider, you can spread theexact amount of asphalt just where itis needed, which means less manualwork in shovelling, raking andclearing up.

The Sprider is fully insulated, which means thatit retains the heat and makes the asphalt easierto rake out and compact. Sprider does not justincrease your capacity, it also increases quality. The insulation means that the asphalt can beleft in the Sprider arm when you move aboutthe site, and during short breaks, withoutsolidifying. In addition, the insulation makes itless likely that the asphalt could stick, whichmakes cleaning easy. If the insulation is notthick enough in certain conditions, the Spridercan be equipped with electric heating.

Mogensen Raw Materials Handling reports thatthis year's appearance at the Hillhead exhibitionwas their best ever. The stand attracted a recordnumber of visitors and significant enquiries.Interest in the company's wide range of vibratorySizers, screens, feeders and conveyors was, asever, very lively: The item of equipment, whichattracted the greatest interest this year, however, was the vibratory spreader feeder.

This type of machine is designed to accept a feed from a narrowsource such as a conveyor belt, and to spread it evenly andconsistently across any wider, subsequent item of processequipment, which needs a controlled, properly spread feedpresented at low velocity in order to operate at its optimalefficiency. Examples of such equipment are wide vibratoryscreens, conveyor-type fluid bed driers, magnetic drumseparators and computerised optical and X-ray sorting machines.Mogensen's spreader feeders designed to serve single 1m, 1.5m,

2.0m and 3m machines are now available, as are feeders in the same range of output sizes designed to accept a single, narrowfeed and to split it into two equal streams, each of which is efficiently and evenly spread.

Mogensen machines are available in mild or stainless steel execution, with or without dust enclosures and in heat and/or wear-resistant versions.

Sprider can be adapted to suit customer requirements, thanks to a choice ofspecifications for the transport arm. The range can be varied between 4.3and 5 metres, which means that the Sprider arm can reach an area of 32 - 50m sq. In the transport position, the Sprider can either be lifted vertically orfixed at an angle to the truck bed, making the vehicle shorter and givingbetter ground clearance.

Capacity is 30 tonnes per hour, making it ideal for use as an asphalt spreaderbeside the road. All Spriders movements and functions are preciselycontrolled by a specially designed radio control system. The same radiocontrol can be used to move the vehicle, if it is equipped with ReCoDrive out-of-cab operation.

The Sprider is installed with a simple hook anchorage to most types of truckbed, both round bottomed and rectangular. This means that the Sprider canbe moved from truck bed to truck bed in a few minutes, making it completelyversatile.

Baioni havebest showever atHillheadBaioni have exhibited at the Hillheadshow since the early 90's, this yearhas proved to be the best exhibitionever with many enquiries coming inglobally, with a lot of interest in theBaiDec centrifuge dehydration systemfor reclaiming solids and wash waterfrom washing plants in the recyclingand quarry industry; also greatinterest has been shown in the Baionicontaminated soil washing system, which is now being employed toreclaim contaminated land sites fromhydrocarbons and heavy metals.

The highlight of the show was the handing over by Graham Brain for Baionito Paul Davis for S.E. Davis & Son Ltd of the BaiDec 65L horizontalcentrifuge. This is the third machine supplied to the English company whohas many years specialist experience offering crushing, screening, earthmoving and washing equipment and services and is the only contractwashing company to have the equipment suited to deal with minus 63micron sludge water coming from washing plants.

The decision by Andy and Paul Davis was made on the basis of the goodtrack record of the last two Baioni centrifuges delivered in recent yearswhich have been demonstrating high outputs and low maintenance costscompared with other horizontal centrifuges available in the market. The closeworking relationship with Ivan Zanzani, Production Manager of Baioni andPaul Davis has resulted in developing a very special centrifuge capable ofdealing with all types of densities of material experienced by the contractingside.

With the importance of the high cost of sludge disposal and the high cost ofwater supply, major savings can be made by using centrifuges to reclaimwater which can be immediately reused in the washing plant, in a closedloop system, and the solids reclaimed in a dry enough state to be moved ordisposed of. This is proving to be a success with recycling sites with limitedspace and with quarries and sand gravel pits who need to reclaim theirlagoon areas that take up large areas of land that can otherwise be used.

New for Hillhead 2014 was the Simogear range ofgeared motors, replacing the long-establishedMotox range and now directly compatible withstandard competitor units. They weredemonstrated on the stand in an IDS package on aJoy Global conveyor.

With many established Siemens products on display, such as the FZGrange (now SIG) - a flagship drive component of the aggregates industry -there was plenty to see and do on the Siemens stand at Hillhead.

Totally integrated automation, safety and control systeminnovations

Innovations in safety technology were also revealed to customers.Siemens showed the Simatic S7-1500F failsafe programmable controllerand STEP 7 Safety Advanced V13 configuration software. These were seenfor the first time at April's Hanover Show but Hillhead represented theirUK debut. They are all integrated into the Siemens Totally IntegratedAutomation (TIA) portal and along with other Siemens software, unlockthe full potential of TIA, optimising all planning, machine and processprocedures.

Along with the Siemens TIA portal, innovations in this area included thenew SITOP 1600 module with uninterruptible power supply (UPS) toprovide reliable buffering and prevent costly downtime. It is a significantmarket first, with TIA portal connectivity, and is Profinet/Ethernet based.

In instrumentation and analytics, Siemens showed dynamic weighingthrough Milltronics MSI, Sitrans LR560 radar level measurement formonitoring solids and Sitrans MAG 8000 battery-operated wireless watermeters, along with laser analytics. LDS 6 and Si-trans SL are diode lasergas analysers measuring light absorption of different gas com-ponents,with signals from up to three measuring points processed simultaneouslyin the case of the LDS 6. The sensors on both are designed for use inharsh environments.

Energy efficiency and condition monitoring

Siemens also demonstrated how significant savings andefficiency improvements can be made using Siemenstechnology. Experts discussed Energy Auditing and howSiemens can help improve overall efficiency within plants.

The Siemens CMS 2000, a continuous condition monitoringunit, was launched at the show and demonstrated thebenefits of condition monitoring in overall asset manage-ment for customers. The unit accepts up to 16accelerometers, is web-enabled, and requires no additionalsoftware. This new development reflects the increasinginterest in condition monitoring throughout the expandingminerals industry.

Siemens industry services

The Siemens Industry Services team were also on hand atHillhead to talk about the wide range of services available toadd value to machines and plant. Whether it be re-trofit,safety consultancy, IT security, energy efficiency consultancy, engineering support or technical consulting, Siemens canprovide a comprehensive range of services tailored tocustomer needs.

Gary Chapman, Siemens Industry account developmentmanager, Aggregates, summed up: “We had a very successfulHillhead and we showed how, through integration and asuperb product and systems offer across an unrivalled span ofareas, we can help cu-stomers maximise productivity, minimise energy use and maintain reliability, whatever theapplication.“

Remote monitoring of crushing datafrom quarries is becoming a crucialelement in mobile crushing andscreening applications. Today, Metsooffers complete fleet managementand automation systems, designedfor all Lokotrack range mobileapplications.

Metso FleetManagementsystem consists ofan IC processcontrol system, asatellite uplink and a Metso DNAReport portal. It collects and presentsa daily overview of the operatingLokotrack fleet including effectiveoperating hours, fuel consumption, location of the units, alarms andparameter changes.

Metso IC processcontrol system, astandard feature inall Lokotrackcrushing plants, collects crusher datacontinuously. Withthe new fleetmanagement tool, thisinformation is being sent fromLokotrack uplink via satellite daily to be used ininternet portal. The crushing data can beaccessed via internet.

Saves time and adds accuracy

“Without this system, collecting operating hoursand other data manually is time consuming. There are also delays before the numbers are atyour fingers and the data can be inaccurate.Metso Fleet Management provides dailyoperating data automatically wherever you are, saving time and enhancing the accuracy ofinformation,” comments Julius Mäkelä, ProjectManager at Metso Mining and Construction.

“Maintenance, ordering the spares and wearsand re-fuelling can be organized in a moreeffective way when you know the exact fuelconsumptions and operating hours of individualunits. Here, the fleet management tool canprovide valuable assistance,” Mäkelä adds.

Metso DNA Report portal brings the crushing parameterson your eyes

Parameter changes have direct effect on crushing and screening process.Data and parameter changes are collected by the Metso DNA Report portaland data can be accessed anywhere using internet.

In the Report portal, you can compare data between the units, days orweeks. Repeating alarms due to the misuse of the unit cannot be

hidden anymore. Using the portal, you have the means to guideoperators to use Lokotrack in a proper way and to preserve the value

of your investment.

Full range of tools for process steering andautomation

Besides active productdevelopment, Metso hascontinuously developed newtools to ease customersoperations and make those moreprofitable. In addition to the fleetmanagement, Metso launchedlast year the ICr remotemonitoring system for Lokotrackplants, providing wireless realtime operating data and unitcontrol to the excavator cabin

for the operator.

The ICr system improves workingsafety and comfort while the

operator can adjust all basic crushingparameters without leaving the excavatorcabin, using a handy colour display.

For complete mobile plant automation, aMetso DNA automation system is available,

featuring full process controls for feeders, crushers, conveyors, screens andhoppers. The system controls material feed rate, re-circulation and crusherloads, for example.

Target values for automatic controls are given in a control room and they aregathered as production recipes that can be easily created, edited anduploaded by operators. The Metso DNA control cabin with its displaysprovides real-time process information and camera images.

The first Metso DNA's for mobile and portable crushing plants have beenalready installed and are in operation at North European crushingcontractors in demanding operation environment. The Hyundai HL780-9A wheeled loader was put through its paces inthe demo area. Launched last year, the rugged and powerfulmachine like its fellow stable mates the in the HL 9A range, complieswith strict Tier 4 Interim/EU-Stage IIIB standards on engine emissions. Its engine comes with an EGR and diesel particulate filter (DPF). TheDPF is automatically and/or manually regenerated, ensuringcompliance with all NOx and PM values. The high performance DPFfilters only need to be cleaned after 5,000 to 6,000 hours inoperation.

The HL780-9A is fitted withvarious transmission and powermodes to allow the operator tocustomise the switchingcharacteristics, switching points, working speed and hydraulicpower to suit the application. Thedifferent modes ensure the besttorque/oil flow for the job. Thetorque converter lockup isstandard from second gearupwards, and the rigidtransmission of the converter issaid to noticeably reduce fuelconsumption, especially forapplications which involve a lot ofdriving.

Also on demo was the R480LC-9A crawler excavator which boasts anoperating weight of 4.9 tonne. Hyundai has powered this 9Aearthmover with a low emission, low noise, Cummins Tier 4Interim/Stage IIIB QSX11.9 engine. This engine has one of the highestpower-to-weight ratios in its class, and its remarkable torque rise (upto 50%) enables the engine to quickly take full advantage of thetorque power. This heavy line earthmover is guaranteed to get thelargest of jobs done, whether it's a massive amount of material thatneeds to be moved, or a deep trench project.

Terex Finlay buoyed by thesuccess of Hillhead 2014Hillhead 2014 exceeded ourexpectations and has undoubtedlysignaled a return to confidence in theUK, Ireland and international markets. In terms of our new product launcheswe've had an encouraging response tothose models that we presented for thefirst time at the show.

Our NEW model 893 and 883+ heavy duty screen,I-100RS impact crusher and C-1550 cone crusherwere headline highlights to not just British andIrish customers, but also the many internationalvisitors that we had call onto our stand. Theintroduction to these new models has been a keypart of our new product development initiativesand we already are starting to see a surge indemand for both these machines.

We took the decision to preview our new model J-1170AS on our mainbooth. This new model is the next stage in the development of oursuccessful J-1170 model, a machine that we launched last year at bauma,2013. We were inundated with requests from customers to see thismachine in action and as a direct result the machine will go to work witha number of these customers in their day to day operations as part of ourstringent testing phase. The machine went straight to work on a customersite after the Hillhead show and both we and the customer are delightedwith the initial results. We endeavor to bring this machine to market inlate 2014. Our NEW 883+ Spaleck screener was also a real eye openerand many customers marveled at this machines flexibility and capabilities. The decision to demonstate the machine in the receycling area clearlydemonstrated the versatility of this class leading machine.

Without doubt the biggest draw at the show was our diesel/electric dual-powered train comprising our J-1175 jaw crusher, C-1540 cone crusherand 694+ inclined screener that we placed in our working area. Thesedual powered machines offer operators the flexibility to power the planteither by mains electric connection or the onboard genset powerpackconfiguration. Either power option presents operators with significantpower, servicing and maintenance cost savings in direct comparison to adiesel/hydraulic powered plant.

These machines attracted a lot of attention at the show and customerswhom we demonstrated the potential energy savings where veryimpressed and we have some very solid leads that we'll be following up inthe coming months.

Overall the show was a tremendous success and well worth the effort andresources that we invested in it. More importantly we left the show havingconducted some business and with many promising leads that we aim toconvert in the near and the medium term' said Nigel Irvine, Sales &Marketing Director.

The 10,000th machine soldby Warwick Ward(machinery) Ltd

KTR oil coolersare an effectivecomponent

Hillhead 2014 was memorable for many reasons, theweather was kind for one, and it was certainly a historicshow for Warwick Ward (machinery)Ltd. Warwick Wardhave been in business since 1970 and have been everpresent exhibitors at Hillhead since 1989. This year's showwas particularly poignant and memorable for the fact thatit was marked by the sale of the 10,000th piece ofearthmoving equipment to have passed through theirpremises at Blacker Hill in Barnsley, South Yorkshire intheir 44 years of trading.

It was fitting also that one of Warwick Ward's first ever customers back in1970, Cat Plant Ltd also of Barnsley, were the purchasers some 44 years onof the brand new Case 1121F that marked this iconic moment. Cat Plantowner Sid Bolton is pictured with son in law Ronnie shaking hands on thedeal with Warwick Ward owners Ashley and Matthew Ward. Also on thephoto are Scott Freeman and Andy Blandford from Case Construction.

It was a shame that Warwick Ward himself who sadly passed away 10 yearswas not present to witness the occasion as he would surely have been avery proud man and would have smiled at the fact that it was Sid who wasthe lucky recipient of machine number 10,000 - he would also no doubthave smiled at the fact that Sid continues in true fashion to drive a veryhard bargain! Cat Plant are themselves over 40 years established as a largeplant hire company and also operate a quarry and landfill site locally.

Warwick Ward have grown significantly from those humble beginnings backin 1970 when Warwick bought his first small yard in Canal Street, Barnsleywhich has now long since been a housing estate. Warwick Ward moved intotheir premises at Blacker Hill in the late 1970's and have been there eversince.

Widely recognised as Europe's largest stock of used wheel loaders, earthmoving equipment and spare parts, Warwick Ward became a CaseConstruction dealer in 2006 and have now firmly established themselves asone of Case's best performing flagship dealerships in Europe. In 2012, thecompany expanded further by taking on the sole UK distributorship for Tanawaste shredders and compactors and the business in all sectors continues togrow year on year.

Oil/air coolers are an effectivecomponent of any mobileconstruction system, optimise theefficiency of hydraulic drives andcontrolling the flow of the hydraulicmedium.

Environmental consciousness in the shape ofnew Tier 4 emission engines, and increasinglycompact design dimensions in mobileconstruction equipment, mean thermomanagement is becoming more and moreimportant. Subsequently, ever more compact oilcoolers with increasing power density are indemanded by engine builders and systemsuppliers looking for an easy integration intosmaller housings and systems.

In mobile hydraulics, design engineers seek tosave on fuel by reducing weight and getting byon oil volumes that are as small as possible. Inindustrial hydraulics it is mostly the installationspace and the charges of the hydraulic mediumwhich are decisive if a low oil volume isrequired. Furthermore, the lower the oil volume, the more dynamic the system must be as lowerenergy volumes must control the oil flow. Thus, energy efficiency is paramount to modernhydraulic systems.

For the aforementioned reasons, KTR offersoil/air coolers series OAC & MMC, plate heatexchangers PHE, and compact tube bundle heatexchangers series TAK and TAK/T.

KTR's OAC coolers are intended to be compact, have a high efficiency factor and ease ofmaintenance. The OAC is also available with aspecial corrosive resistant KTL coating and isATEX approved according to the EU standard94/9/EG (ATEX 95). OAC 200 to OAC 900 can beused in the gas-explosion zones “I 2G c IIB+H2T X” and dust explosion zones “II 3D c T X”,applying for versions with 230V/400V fan driveas well as those with hydraulic drive.

Going a step further, KTR's MMC combinationcoolers are designed and manufactured tocustomer requirements and capable of coolingmultiple media (oil, air, water, fuel)simultaneously within one housing. KTR's MMCoffers the best solution for saving on space, weight and cost.

AnacondaCrusherlaunch atHillhead2014 'Jawdropping'!

Anaconda Equipment, the NorthernIreland based manufacturer ofmobile screens and stockpilers, tookto the stage at Hillhead 2014 with themost significant product launch todate. The J960 ECO jaw crusher is thefirst mobile crusher product from thecompany and indicates a clearintention to provide customers with acomplete solution for materialsprocessing. The unit looks fantasticand promises to be popular globally, especially in urban areas.

The J960 ECO represents everything that is goodabout contract crushing - compact, transportable, fuel efficient and above all, robust! Anaconda is very proud of their firststep into the crushing arena and is extremelypleased with the reception at Hillhead. Technicaldirector, Martin Quinn highlights this bold stepfrom the company:

“I guess people have been wondering when wewere going to get into crushing as it is a naturalstep after screening but we didn't take thisdecision lightly. Crushing is not for the fainthearted and we have spent considerable timeon the J960 ECO project to get it right. A lot oftime was spent understanding the features thatwould really make a difference to potentialcustomers and we have designed this machinewith standard items that others would consider'options'.

Fuel is a considerable running cost no matterwhere you are so the dual power option wasthe first 'standard' feature to go on the page.We also looked at reducing the level of noise onthis unit and the result has been that we havemanaged to produce one of the quietestcrushers on the market. With the help of ourdealer network, the other features were quicklyestablished and designed into the product. It'san exciting time for us and the feedback overthe few days at the show has been bothcomplimentary and positive.”

The J960 ECO offers a 900 x 600 (36” x 24”) jaw opening, a dirt belt, magnet and dual power as standard. There is also an auxiliary power socketto run a separate stockpiler or to run a small generator. The feeder has agrizzly section to remove 'dirt' and a diverter chute which can either removethe dirt completely out the dirt belt or transfer it onto the main dischargebelt and mix with the crushed product. The fuel consumption is an amazing6-8 litres per hour which is a substantial saving when you consider that 25-30 litre per hour is not uncommon for some crushers of this size.

As well as launching the crusher, Anaconda also exhibited the recently re-designed DF512 with enhanced features and the SR514 two-deck finishingscreen. All three products represent a distinct up-sizing of Anaconda's rangeof products and put them firmly in the 'main league' when it comes toequipment suppliers from the crushing and screening sector.

Concluding on the overall success of the show, Mr Quinn added: “Hillhead isone of the best trade shows around. It is small enough to get around yet thevisitor type is exactly what you are looking for. The show was a great successand there is a definite change in the mood from two years ago. There werecertainly more buyers around and the feedback on all our products, especiallythe crusher, was extremely pleasing. Coming off the back of the Conexpo inVegas a few months back, we are set for a fantastic year and we still havethe Steinexpo in Germany to come.”

It will be interesting to see what is next for Anaconda but you can count onfurther product launches as standard!

Lee Palmer, Divisional Manager forthe Earthmoving Division said wecouldn't have asked for a bettershow. It's been absolutely fantastic, with lots of enquiries. Severalmachines were sold off the standduring the event and there will bemore sales after the show as wefollow up the enquiries.“

Mr Palmer went on to say “We had three newmodels on display, the R922 excavator and thePR736 Dozer, but our new R914 compactexcavator was the star of the show for us thisyear.“

Keith Ragg, General Manager of the ConcreteDivision highlighted “we exhibited theMobilmix 2.25 batch mixing plant and theHTM904 9m3 Truck mixer and the latest TruckMounted Pump. I was really pleased with theinterest in all three products and delighted tohave taken orders directly from the show.“

As well as the new product purchases there wasbrisk business for the Rental team. The RentalDivision had equipment on the Liebherr stand aswell as in the adjacent demonstration area.Mark Witcher, General Manager of LiebherrRentals explained “the combination of staticand active machinery gave visitors the chance

to properly preview our Rental Fleet; enquiries were much higher thanexpected, demonstrating customer's appreciation of how renting, be it shortor longer term, can be a serious solution to their business needs”.

Alternatives to new machine purchase were offered by our Quality UsedEquipment team who were on hand to explain the advantages and qualitythat second hand equipment offers, John Diggens, Sales Manager for QualityUsed Equipment said “not everybody is looking for brand new equipmentand Hillhead was a great opportunity to talk with new and existingcustomers, many of who are repeat customers, who understand the highquality levels and competitive pricing that we offer.“

David Croft, Marketing Manager summarised, “we had a very successfulshow with many visitors passing through the stand over the three days. Wewere very pleased with both the quantity and quality of the visitors, inparticular we were impressed with the number of new contacts we made.Possibly the best Hillhead yet.“

245 exhibitors with 315 trademarks. These are the keydata when taking stock of steinexpo 2014. Comparedto the previous event at the same time, this representsan increase of 15%.

This year the MHI quarry in Nieder-Ofleiden provides 180,000 m2 ofgross exhibition space for steinexpo 2014 (date: 3 to 6 September). As with every major event, the demonstration exhibition hasin the meantime developed a life of its own and this has to be continuously nurtured for it to keep growing. The 'growthassistants' in this endeavour are in particular the trade fair director Dr. Friedhelm Rese who, together with the general managerAndrea Friedrich, provides the right stimuli at the right time. The trade fair director gave as the lowdown on how he manages tokeep the momentum to meet the steinexpo challenge every three years with new initiatives.

Dr. Rese, what is the progress of the preparatory work for the fair?

Dr. Friedhelm Rese: All work is running on schedule. Our planning team headed by Prof. Hossein Tudeshki and ThomasHardebusch of the Technical University Clausthal is not missing a beat in the planning and also provides the necessary supportin terms of exhibitor requests for machinery set-up and demonstration. As usual, we also receive a lot of support from the MHIquarry operator. In this regard the good cooperation with the technical director Dirk Menninger and the plant manager DieterWeber is worthy of special mention.

What are some specific features that you look forward to the most this time?

In general, our team is particularly driven by maximum exhibitor and visitor satisfaction, and we are focused on achieving it thistime too. What is interesting is the increase in the number of new exhibitors both national and international. We are veryexcited to hear how they rate their participation premiere. An impressive attraction will most likely be the steep lift betweenquarry soles B and C. For the exhibition itself is indeed a mere footnote, but for visitors a considerable time-saving element, which in turn will benefit exhibitors when it translates into greater frequency in visits. Apart from that, through various requestswe are aware that exhibitors are planning quite outstanding demonstrations to up the game on their previous presentationsonce more. Besides the usual sizes of the majority of machinery in Germany, there will also be some construction machinerygiants that one does not get to see in action every day being put through their paces.

The demonstrations are of course the real steinexpo showcase events. But this time you also promise the pavilion exhibitors anexperience that is more a part of the game than merely being on the sideline. How will you achieve this?

Our new pavilion concept with its stand design that promotes this concept and allows more vibrant presentations is tointegrate the rather 'static' range of accessory suppliers and service providers to a greater extent in the lively trade fairenvironment. The side walls are easy to open when required and this openness has a strong pull and welcoming effect onvisitors. Finally the exhibitors themselves will play their inventive parts in reinforcing this initiative.

Large Iraq project for BaioniThe Gross Domestic Product in Iraqexpanded 4.21 percent in 2014 from theprevious year. GDP Annual GrowthRate in Iraq averaged 8.06 percentfrom 1991 until 2013, reaching an alltime high of 54.16 percent. Thesefigures show and explain whyEuropean manufacturers are looking toIraq as target country for their export.

Baioni have gained an important reference inrespect of a big static crushing, screening andwashing plant at the new site near Baghdad;Bismayah New City is the vast National HousingProgram owned by Hanwha Corporation, the firstand the biggest city development projectthroughout the history of Iraq. Bismayah city islocated 10km south east of Baghdad on the Iraqi-Kuwaiti Highway, spread on a total area of 1,830hectare area and is planned to accommodatearound 600,000 occupants in a total of 100,000residential units.

The Government of Iraq will develop the publicfacilities such as education, religious, welfare, andcommercial facilities as well as the infra-structureincluding water and sewage treatment plants.

When Hanwha began looking for a supplier forthe new aggregates plant they had some veryspecific requirements in order to ensure that thesand and gravel production process at the newsite was designed with efficiency in mind. The factthat they would need a two phase installation ledBaioni to carefully design and implement thewhole plant allowing flexible operations.

To help achieve the production of the aggregatefor construction aims the affiliate civil engineeringcompany, S & P WORLD NETWORKS JLT fromKorea, turned to Baioni, even though their ownexisting crushing plant was delivered by others.

The installation has been recently commissioned and started-up andBaioni are already securing services such as the transport and logisticsfor spares directly from Italy.

Project Management

The client's main material application is crushing alluvial abrasivematerial to be used as aggregate for concrete production in Bismayahnew project. The plant operates at 400tonnes/hour consisting of twodifferent crushing stages using impact crushers first and a mill and animpactor after; for this reason a two stage assembly process was neededtogether with a two month training program.

The first part of the plant concerns thecrushing of alluvial material (5 200mm) bymeans of two secondary jaw crushers: MIS140 and MIS 100. At this stage materialis conveyed to two screens for stockpile(0-40mm), while +40mm oversize

Hub Issue 30 23/7/14 11:24 Page 60

Quarrying

www.hub-4.com | p61 |

product is further crushed using a BV 6500vertical shaft impactor for the production ofsand (0-5mm). The second stage sees the use ofa GTB 200 bars mill not only for the productionof sand but mainly to keep the grading envelopeof the sand unchanged, in other words, toguarantee the right particle-size curve of thesand. The plant is effectively addressing clientsproblems who latterly decided to have a greatquantity of sand.

The processing system

A new fully automated crushing and screeningplant that includes two parallel V18.50/3 deck

screens removing the 0-5mm (stockpile)while the +5mm oversize is conveyedinto a bag storage and then sent tocrushing. The feature is that there is noprimary crushing as the materialreceived is already 200mm. At this stagethe client has two parallel operationallines: production of the 0-40mm orproduction of the +400mm oversizeproduct which, passing through differentstages of screening, cycloning, crushing, achieves a good quality sand. So, in theprimary production mode the plantproduces a 0-4mm sand, in fact 50% ofproduction is sand. In secondaryproduction mode the +40mm oversize isprocessed through the combinationbetween jaws, bars mill and verticalshaft impactor which provides highquality 8-13mm and 5-8mm aggregates.

Besides the high quality products withhigh rates of production which Baioni

equipment is able to offer, another keyfeature of the plant is the dust suppression system manufactured by Baionithemselves. Dust generation is unfortunately an inevitable consequence ofmineral/material extraction due to the processes of breaking and handlingof rocks.

“Baioni have developed the BaiJet system for dust emissions control whichemploys spray nozzles on every individual machine. The advantage is thatthis dust control system drastically reduces process downtime, it is soefficient that it pays itself during the first month of use”, says Stefanelly

Stefano, Trading Manager for Baioni. “In the Iraqiinstallation everything is working efficiently”.

“In Baioni the approach is customer orientated, we striveto accommodate every request and every time we haveto revise the methods of design, assemblage, controland management to work better” says Pietro Baioni,CEO. “Given the flexibility of our installations of

addressing the needs of our customers who often lookfor performance and cost, we can now say we are ready

for a further expansion in Iraq. We are nowwitnessing signs ofstabilisation/recovery of theeconomic situation and we are nowready to integrate all of our workfor big government plans andprojects”, he concluded.

They cried “Wolf Minerals”when the beast of Lee Moorarrived on the edge ofDartmoor, Devon By Jeff Buxton

Australian Company, Wolf Minerals£130m tungsten site on the edge ofDartmoor will when fully operationalwill be one of the world's mostimportant tungsten mines producing5000 tonnes a year.

Charlie Northfield, process plant manager, for theWolf Mineral site commented, “We plan to beproducing 5000 tonnes per year of tungstenconcentrate at 65% tungsten - about 3.5% of theglobal forecast demand”. Wolf Minerals, theAustralian company building and operating themine, claim 200 jobs will be directly created andstated that the £130m project will plough millionsof pounds into the Devon and UK economiesevery year.

The history

The Hemerdon site located close to Lee Moor areais situated approximately 5km from Plymouthcoastal harbour. Renowned for its mining heritagethe industry has been a provider and key driver ofthe local economy. Large scale, china clay andaggregates operations continue in the area, whichhas been extensively mined since the midnineteenth century. Charlie said, “If things go toplan, there is a great future for mining of tungstenand mining again in this area of Devon”.

The road to realising their plans to mine tungstenhas not been easy. Tungsten was first discoveredat Hemerdon, as far back as 1867 and such is thescale of the deposit that the site is nowrecognised by the British Geological Survey as thefourth largest tungsten resource in the world.

Although by today's standards relatively small inscale the first significant workings took placebetween the period of the first and second worldwar when mines were built and productioncommenced.

With operations coming to a halt in 1944 due tothe resumption of shipments of tungsten fromoverseas further attempts continued during the1960s and early 1970s to reopen the mine, butfailed.

The future

In the late 1970s an American mining company AMAX became involvedand a significant explority programme of drilling got underway. In 1981 aplanning application was submitted to mine tungsten and following apublic enquiry in 1982 the Secretary of State indicated that theimprovements to the visual aspects of the processing plant and wastedisposals area would be regarded more favourably in a new submission. Arevised plan was subsequently submitted in 1985 which was passed byDevon County council in 1986.

Planning permissions to mine tungsten at Hemerdon are now in place andwere recently updated by Wolf Minerals in 2011, with the approval ofDevon County Council and the Secretary of State for communities andlocal government.

In 2011 Wolf Minerals completed and published a definitive feasibilitystudy and the following year the 600m link road was completed andopened between Lee Moor Road and West Park Hill in Plympton. In 2013the project financial deal was completed followed closely by theprocessing plant & infrastructure final design.

In 2013 GR Engineering, another Australiancompany specialising in mineral extractionprojects were appointed EPC as a maincontractor to work in conjunction with WolfMinerals to deliver the project on their behalf. With GR Engineering working with Wolf Mineralsto design and build to implement the processequipment scope of works to meet the processneeds key process equipment and services wereidentified and suppliers invited to tender. One ofthese processes was the supply of 10 linearscreens used for the separation of the sizefractions of raw and finished material within theprocess streams. Don Valley Engineering wasidentified as a manufacturer and followingtechnical discussion and visits by GR Engineeringto their Doncaster Works, were eventuallyselected as the preferred supplier and awarded acontract to supply 10 Linear screens, rangingfrom 9.0m2 to 64m2 with single and double deckscreening areas and throughput rates in excessof 1200tph.

The scope of work and project schedule calledfor the design, supply and delivery in the secondquarter of 2014, including individual screentesting and FAT(Factory Acceptance Testing).

Work to commission the mine, its processingplant and other decommissioning of oldinfrastructure commenced in 2013. Whilst theinitial phase of the operation involves thedetailed design of the processing plant and offsite fabrication.

The extraction process

The extraction of tungsten will take place through open pit mining with thepit measuring about 850m long by 450m wide extending 200m. The sidesof the pit will be cut in benches to allow for safe working as the depth ofthe mine increases. Most of the valuable tungsten and tin at Hemerdon canbe found within the large deposits of granite which contains veins ofquartz / tungsten which can be found and identified by diamond drilling.

Material extracted from the mine will be transferred by a raw feedconveyor that will deliver the material to the primary crusher. The crushedmaterial will then be transferred to the scrubber screen and product screenbefore the DMS Feed Screen, the process stream then splits into twostreams, feeding the primary sinks 01 screen and 02 screen and primaryfloats screen O1 and screen 02, before being fed onto the secondary DMSscreen and to the primary mill sizing screen.

Contract award

Upon award of the contract, the Don Valley Engineering design team, setabout designing and detailing each screen to meet the screeningrequirements of the user requirement provided by the process flow diagramand equipment specification. Each screen was individually designed andone of the screens in particular is believed to be the largest double deckscreen to be supplied in the UK by Don Valley Engineering. Measuring 8.1min length and 4.0m wide the screen has pushed the envelope of screeningtechnology for gross weight, weighing in at some 32 tonnes with ascreening surface area of two screen decks each measuring 32m2, totalling64m2, designed to minimise the footprint of the plant. The size of thisscreen is believed to be the largest screen in the UK. Manufactured by DonValley Engineering the company have produced longer screens and largerthroughput rates, but not at this weight or screening design ratio. Theunique design of the banana screen (so called because of the curved screenarea), allows the design of the feed chute to achieve maximum feedproperties, whilst reducing the angle of the screen decks, thus providingmaximum screening properties to be obtained over the screening areafootprint.

In the second week of June 2014, Don ValleyEngineering completed the final logistical stage ofthe contract. Allowing GR Engineering to meettheir obligations to Wolf Minerals and takedelivery of the 10 linear screens, delivered on timeas per the contract program. The first screens wereoff loaded and will be stored ready for mechanicalinstallation as per the project program. The largescreen required a police escort and was delayed by

police for 36 hours to allow the road works on the exit of the M5 to berearranged to allow the large load to pass safely.

Mining in remotelocations - howequipmentmanufacturerscan deliverprocessingsystems that arefit for purposeAuthor: Peter Craven, Head ofMarketing, CDE Global

CDE Global have been involved inthe design, manufacture and deliveryof turnkey materials processingsystems since 1992 and work acrossfour sectors - Mining, Construction &Recycling, Specialist IndustrialSands and Environmental . In thispaper Peter Craven (Head ofMarketing) outlines how equipmentmanufacturers can meet the demandsof the mining industry in the yearsahead.

Our experience in the delivery of mining projects across the world in recentyears has revealed a number of challenges for us and other equipmentmanufacturers if we are to continue to provide processing systems that arefit for purpose.

A major challenge for equipment manufacturers in the years ahead will beto provide materials processing systems that are able to be efficientlydeployed in increasingly remote locations. There will also be a requirementto process increasingly difficult materials that have been overlooked untilnow. As our demand for steel, aluminium, copper and silica sands and otherindustrial minerals continues to increase mining companies are constantlylooking for new and improved processing technologies that will allow themto process lower grade ores and industrial sands and produce final productssuitable for use in downstream processes.

Another development we have witnessed is an increased focus on stagedinvestment as a means of delivery for new mining projects - designing yourplant in such a way as to allow for production to begin in the shortestpossible timeframe while planning for further plant and processdevelopment. To use the age old adage 'the customer is always right', ifmining companies are looking for equipment that can be more efficientlydeployed, that can process increasingly difficult materials and that issuitable for staged investment then it is the responsibility of equipmentmanufacturers to meet these requirements.

In looking at how we can do this I will look at a number of issues which canbe categorised under these headings:1. Built with the application in mind2. Modularity3. Intelligent Process Integration4. A phased approach to design & delivery5. System adaptability6. Mobility - without compromise7. A turnkey approach

1 - Built with the application in mind

Every project presents its own unique challenges. When we look at the raw material there are aseveral factors which will influence the selectionof the appropriate processing system. The qualityof the ore is the first issue to consider. In additionto this we need to analyse the level ofcontamination within the material that needs tobe removed. This could be sticky plastic clay thatrequires a logwasher to provide the necessaryattrition. In the case of iron ore processing we willalso have to consider the levels of silica andalumina contamination which if they are notremoved will lead to inefficiencies in downstreamsteel production processes. The presence of all ofthese materials necessitates that every project isconsidered as a stand-alone system and designed, specified and constructed individually with a fullunderstanding of the requirements of the project.

If we take this to its logical conclusion theresponse from equipment manufacturers to thisscenario should be to produce tailored processingsystems for every individual project in order tomaximise process efficiency. This represents amajor shift from the typical business model forequipment manufacturers - which is to produce alimited range of standard machines that can beapplied across a wide range of applications. Usingstandard machines presents a problem, andrequires end users of the equipment to accept thatthey will have to compromise on performance ifthey do not intend to run the equipment withinthe designed operating parameters. .

While the vast majority of equipmentmanufacturers will tell you that tailoring eachindividual project is not possible - the reality isthat it is entirely possible. Our experience in themining sector has shown that there are a numberof individual considerations that need to be madein order to maximise the efficiency of the finalprocessing system.

The selection of the appropriate screening mediais very important - polyurethane is almost alwaysthe best match for mining projects but not allpolyurethane is equal. Due consideration must begiven to the abrasiveness & specific gravity of thematerial to ensure that the most suitable productis specified.

The choice of lining for any hydrocyclones alsorequires individual consideration - rubber liningmay well be suitable on some materials but otherswill demand ceramic linings when dealing withhighly abrasive mineral ores.

Consideration should also be given to therequirement for additional wear liners at specificpoints in the system. Easily replaceable wear linersat the feed point will have a positive impact onplant availability by minimising the time requiredfor maintenance.

The appropriate conveyor belt specification will also require individualtreatment based on the nature of the material to be processed. Enhancedtop cover thickness will enhance wear resistance, maximise plantproductivity and reduce costs of operation through a reduction in thespare parts requirement. Staying with conveyors, the inclusion of beltcleaning systems such as tungsten tipped scraper blades will also offerenhanced wear resistance.

The specification of appropriate pumps is also critical in an effort toensure they will stand up to the rigours of the material to be processed.

2 - Modularity

A rise in the popularity of modular processing systems on mining projectshas been evident over the last number of years. One of the majormotivations for a move in this direction from our own perspective was afocus on Transfer Point Technology - ensuring the efficient transition ofmaterial from one stage of processing to another. The direct result of thisapproach is to maximise material retention within the circuit and avoidbottlenecks within the system where the discharge point from oneprocessing phase is not optimised for seamless delivery to the next stage.

There are numerous advantages to this approach - greater processefficiency and reduced installation and commissioning time being the mostobvious. All of this works together to ensure you are able to startextracting value from your material as quickly as possible.

In most, if not all mining projects there will be a requirement to integratethird party equipment within the processing system so it is also importantthat designers are aware of the likely connections that will need to bemade and consider this very early on in the design process. This willstreamline the project design process and ensure that once the system isup and running it operates at maximum efficiency.

The third party equipment that CDE has most experience with whendesigning processing systems for mining projects are attrition cells, spiralclassifiers, decanter centrifuges and filter presses. Through thedevelopment of partnerships with suppliers of these systems we canensure that our focus on Transfer Point Technology does not stop at ourown products but extends to this 3rd party equipment as well. As a resultof our focus on tailoring each system we are also able to manage theintroduction of new equipment to our systems as and when required.

3 - Intelligent Process Integration

Intelligent Process Integration involves the introduction of several differentprocessing phases onto a single chassis. Aligned with the previous pointon modularity this allows for transfer point efficiency to be maximised.Additional advantages are a reduced plant footprint which results in areduced civils requirement. These factors combine to reduce both the timerequired and the final cost of the project.

When feed systems, screening plant, fines processing, scrubbing systemsare all provided as individual stand-alone units there will be a largeamount of design time spent on designing civils and support structures toaccommodate all of this equipment. Once the equipment reaches site thetime taken to mechanically install the plant will be longer than necessaryas a result of having to put all of the individual components together.

Hub Issue 30 23/7/14 11:25 Page 66

Quarrying - Washing

www.hub-4.com | p67 |

The reduction in mechanical install time is deliveredbecause all equipment undergoes a complete pre-build toits working position in a factory environment. This is afinal quality control step that allows for any fabricationissues to be addressed before equipment is dispatched. Our focus on the delivery of wet processing systems meansthat this approach extends to ensuring all pipeworkconnections are already established prior to dispatch -eliminating the requirement for cutting or preparationwork on site, reducing install time and eliminating therequirement to source this pipework locally either becauseit has been damaged in transit or is missing from the itemsdelivered to site.

Another significant advantage of integrating severalprocesses onto a single chassis is that all equipment canbe pre-wired and tested in a factory environment. Addingto the reduction in time taken for mechanical install, theelectrical installation time is also reduced. It also has theadvantage of making the electrical connections a designfeature of the plant - cable runs and housings are part ofthe design process which not only improves the aestheticsof the plant but also enhances health and safety on site.

This approach also reduces the requirement to try and findlocal suppliers of cables and other electrical items -particularly relevant in any discussion concerning how toapproach mining projects in remote locations.

4 - A phased approach to project delivery

Through a phased approach to project delivery it is possible toshow a return on your investment much more quickly. The startof this process will be detailed discussions with your miningengineers to understand the specifics of the reserve - capacityrequirements, likely requirements for future upgrades. This willalso involve a detailed analysis of your material in an attempt tounderstand whether it is possible to kick start a project with asimple processing system which can then be added to as andwhen required.

For example, a detailed material analysis throughout the reservewill reveal whether there is a seam of relatively clean, uncontaminated material that requires minimal processing.Following this it can be determined at what stage additionalequipment may be required - for example a logwasher may needto be introduced to tackle claybound material or to help in theremoval of other contaminants. Following this a third phase maybe the introduction of primary stage water treatment andtailings management systems.

From an operational perspective the main advantage ofadopting a phased approach is that rather than waiting formonths on the delivery of a complex processing system, most ofwhich will be under-utilised for a period of time you are able totake delivery of your first phase equipment in as little as 12weeks. This allows you to begin to show a return on theinvestment very quickly which helps fund the future expansionof the plant when conditions dictate that it is necessary.

5 - System Adaptability

We have touched on the variability that is inevitable withinmining projects and what is required at the outset may changeover time. Future developments with your business may requirea capacity upgrade to meet a rise in demand for the materialyou are producing. We may come across an area of your reservewith particularly challenging material that will require theintroduction of a new process. Space restrictions on site orfuture environmental legislation may require the introduction ofa tailings management system.

Given this potential for circumstances to change, it is essentialthat your processing system has the in-built flexibility to respondto these changes. We can't predict the future but through acomprehensive analysis of your material we can identifywhether for example there is likely to be a requirement for anadditional process to be introduced and when this is likely tohappen given your extraction plan for the reserve.

If we have established that your business plan indicates a likelyrequirement for additional capacity as extraction progresses wewill design the civils on site to take this into account -minimising disruption to your operation. We will also bear this inmind when considering the location of the processing plant inthe first instance to ensure that once any upgrade is requiredthe original location is still suitable. Another step that we willtake is to ensure that the original conveyor specification is fit tocope with the forecasted additional capacity both in terms ofbelt specification and stockpile capacity.

Similarly, if additional processing equipment is likely to berequired this can be considered during the design of the originalplant civils. We will also conduct a detailed analysis of the likelyfuture water and power requirement once the additionalequipment has been added to make sure that this infrastructureis in place.

6 - Mobility without compromise

Mobile makes sense. As your extraction progresses it makessense that your processing plant should be able to be movedwithin the deposit to ensure maximum operational efficienciesare delivered. With a static processing plant this is not possible. As your extraction progresses your operational efficiency isreduced - increased transport movements on site as vehicleshave to haul material greater distances to the processing plant,

Hub Issue 30 23/7/14 11:25 Page 67

unnecessary double handling of your materialas it is stockpiled at the extraction point beforebeing delivered to the processing plant. Byopting for modular equipment which integratesseveral processes on a single, easilytransportable chassis you ensure that yourprocessing plant can be moved quickly andeasily within the deposit - or to anotherprocessing location - in order to maximiseoperational efficiencies. This should be donewithout compromising on the specification ofthe screens, fines washing plants or logwashersthat are included. The creation of a modularproduct range fit for purpose in mining projectsshould involve the same specification ofequipment as would be included on a staticplant.

One of the major areas of compromise onmobile plant is with the walkways - laddersleading to very narrow walkways are the normon most mobile machines. This makes plantmaintenance very awkward, increasing the timeand therefore the cost of carrying out plantmaintenance. Site health and safety rules mayalso be compromised.

This is why we believe that even on mobile orportable plant the walkways for access andmaintenance should be of the samespecification as would be found on a staticplant. This ensures that you continue to enjoyall the benefits of a static plant in relation tomaintenance access - ease of visual inspection, access to change screen media, replace spraybars, and carry out hydrocyclone maintenance.

The issue of maintenance access is oftenoverlooked when a processing plant is beingspecified but it is a very important considerationas it is a factor which will have considerableinfluence on plant availability and delivering thehighest standards of health and safety on site.

7 - A turnkey approach

It is evident from the analysis of all the aspectsthat make up a successful mining project in the21st century that a much greater level ofinteraction between equipment manufacturerand the end user is required in order to deliversuccessful projects. With the manyconsiderations that need to be made there ispotential for a huge number of vendors to beinvolved on each and every project and thisrequires that a robust Project Managementsystem is in place.

Our own process is split into three distinctphases:1. Technical Pre-Sales 2. ProMan3. CustomCare

Each of these phases include large amount ofwork. In Technical Pre-Sales the elementsinclude process design, equipment selection, mechanical design, civil design and 3rd partyequipment integration. As we move into thedelivery phase of the project ProMan takes overand includes factory testing, power distribution, risk management, scheduling, budgetmanagement, construction management andquality control. Once your plant has beensuccessfully installed and commissioned our

range of After-Sales services are activated including our MasterClass trainingprogrammes, service visits, recommended spare parts lists and on-goingmaintenance contracts.

The effect of being able to offer this complete range of services in addition tothe equipment that we provide is to significantly reduce the number ofvendors involved in the project, the result of which is a more streamlinedproject timeline which costs less to deliver. Effective communication is crucialto the delivery of successful materials processing projects and our processprovides you with a dedicated single point of contact throughout the projectlifecycle to ensure you remain fully informed at every stage of the project.Another advantage of this approach is that it helps to develop both ourknowledge of your business and your knowledge of our capability which willallow both parties to explore the potential for further co-operation in thefuture.

In Conclusion

It is clear to all involved in the delivery of mining projects in the 21st centurythat there are many complex issues to overcome. The demands of theindustry are constantly evolving and it is essential that the products offeredby equipment manufacturers continue to evolve. It is equally important thatequipment manufacturers develop their processes and approach to projectdelivery in order to continue to meet the demands of the industry.

In summary, I believe there are 3 main considerations in this analysis of howequipment manufacturers can continue to supply mineral processing systemsthat are fit for purpose.

1. The individual components that make up a complete processing plantcannot be looked at in isolation and should instead be made up ofmodular systems with the in-built flexibility to cope with shifts andchanges in individual project circumstances.

2. Off the shelf processing systems from a collection of differentmanufacturers will not deliver the efficiency required of 21st centurymining projects. A tailored approach is required with each individualproject being built according to the specific requirements of the project -capacity, feed material and potential for future development.

3. Equipment manufacturers must get closer to the project and the end-userand understand the background, the specific objectives and the plans forfuture development. For most equipment manufacturers this requires ahuge shift in the way their business models are constructed. Our businesshas always been constructed on the principle that direct contact with theend-user is critical to success. We have been delivering projects in thismanner for over 20 years and our project portfolio across all the sectors inwhich we operate is evidence of its success.

Mentor Training

Best practice guidance for MEWP safety

www.hub-4.com | p69 |

Earlier this year, IPAF released the latestannual accident statistics generated viatheir online accident reporting platform.Using these results, Mentor presents abrief look at Mobile Elevated WorkPlatform (MEWP) safety targeted atsome of the main areas forimprovement.

Mobile Booms (3b)According to IPAF's most recent results, almost one half of all reported fatalitiesin 2013 involved the use of mobilebooms. Though their versatile naturemakes them an extremely useful tool forworking at height, if used incorrectly, they can be extremely hazardous. Thefollowing basic safety measures are keyto staying safe whilst operating a mobileboom:

Harness and lanyard - IPAF TechnicalGuidance Note H1/08/12 stronglyrecommends that a full body harnesswith an adjustable lanyard is worn whenworking from a boom type MEWP. The

lanyard should be adjusted to be asshort as possible and should only beattached to the manufacturer's identifiedanchorage points on the equipment andan approved safety harness.

Operator's manual - always refer tothe operator's manual for specificguidance on your machine. Every MEWPis different; the manual will provide thebest source of information for yourparticular make and model.

Ground conditions - When positioningthe MEWP for use, make sure it is levelor can be levelled safely. Check themaximum angle for the machine, don'toverride angle sensors and always fullydeploy stabilisers. Ensure the ground isable to support the weight and that theMEWP is not positioned over oldtrenches, drains, sewers, manholes oruncompacted backfill. Take care whendriving over uneven ground, particularlywhen the platform is raised, asvibrations at ground level are magnifiedhigher up the platform. Always check

your route prior to commencing the job.

Risk assessment and emergencyrescue plan - wherever there is aMEWP in use there must be a riskassessment and rescue plan in place toprotect everyone involved. Regulation 4of the Work at Height Regulations 2005states that there must be sufficientpeople on site at any one time whounderstand and are trained to carry outa rescue plan in case of emergencies.

Training - the best safety measure youcan put in place is a trained operator.Mentor encourages companies to ensurethat their operators are trained to anIPAF accredited standard. Trainedoperators will understand how tooperate and inspect the machine safelyand efficiently, and spot potentialhazards prior to and during its use.Managers and Supervisors responsiblefor overseeing the use of MEWPs canalso attend a MEWPs for Managerscourse to reinforce their safetyawareness.

Four commonproblemsexaminedIPAF's results highlighted commoncauses of fatalities across MEWPs of alltypes, including overturn, falls fromheight, electrocution and entrapment. Some of Mentor's best practice guidancefor avoiding these dangers and stayingsafe at height is as follows:

Overturn

Correct machine? Many accidentscould have been avoided if operatorshad used the equipment correctly andonly for the purpose it was designed.

Wind: The safe operating windspeedlimit, noted on the machine, must not beexceeded. Check with an anemometer atground level and at height and abandonthe task if it exceeds the machinecapability.

Ground conditions: Take care whentravelling/working on uneven orunstable surfaces.

Falls from height

Harness and lanyard: A riskassessment specific to the MEWP,application and operating conditionsshould always be done to determinewhether a harness must be worn. It isstrongly recommended that a full bodysafety harness and fall restraint lanyardare used in a boom or when travelling atheight in any MEWP.

Overstretching/overreaching: If thetask cannot be reached safely, repositionthe machine. If a MEWP doesn't lenditself to the task in hand, don't use it.

Entrapment

Secondary guarding devices: A widerange of devices are available to reducethe risk of operator entrapmentincluding protective cages and alarmedpressure bars.

Emergency rescue plan: Secondaryguarding devices are no substitute fortraining and a well engrained rescueplan. Ensure those working on or aroundMEWPs have the relevant skills andknowledge to enable them to carry outemergency procedures.

Electrocution

Safe working distances: Electricity canarc through the air to reach you. Ifoperating indoors, be aware of overheadcrane “bus bars” etc which carryelectricity. Stay at least 15m from powerlines on steel pylons and 9m from thoseon wooden poles (with boom fullyextended).

Risk assessment: When working closeto a live source of electricity, ensure thateveryone in the area is aware of thedangers. Maintain safe workingdistances and use safety barriers ifnecessary.

Mentor encourage those working on oraround MEWPs to continue to report anyrelevant accidents to IPAF athttps://ir.ipaf.org/ to enable the industryto continue to work towards the saferuse of access equipment.

Time to shed somelight on the worldof LED'sLED lighting has seen a massiveexpansion in recent years. Gone are thedays when vehicles had to carry abank of enormous spotlights just to beable to see the way ahead - today's top-quality LED systems from leadingmanufacturers like WildernessLighting provide massive levels ofillumination from light bars that arediscreet, long live and unbelievablytough.

But how do you tell the difference between thetop-quality lights Wilderness makes and thecheaper stuff on the market? After all, we've allseen bargain-basement LEDs for sale online atwhat look like giveaway prices.

The simple answer is that with LED lights, evenmore than with everything else, you get whatyou pay for. The LEDs themselves are classedby their manufacturers according to thestrength of their output, from Grade A forthe very best to Grade E for the weakest. All Wilderness Lighting products onlyexclusively Grade A LEDs.

The LEDs' manufacturers price themaccording to their grade, so Class A isalways more expensive than Class Band so on. This means the only wayto make a profit by selling cheaplight bars is to use lower-quality LEDs.

All Wilderness Lighting products,on the other hand, come with anindustry-leading three yearwarranty. And they're supported by a proper UKdistribution network, so if yours goes wrong, you'llget a 'like-for-like' replacement.

Buy something cheap from an unknown source onthe internet, and not only is it much more likely togo wrong, you're much less likely to get the samelevel of customer support afterwards.

LED lighting technology has come a long way - tothe point where established car makers likeVolkswagen are now using full LED headlamps intheir latest models.

Wilderness Lighting only uses Class A LEDs fromCree and Olson, the top two names in the business- so you can be sure that as well as offering first-class customer service, Wilderness will have theproducts to go with it.

'We understand that cheap LEDs are out there,'

the company says. 'But you need to understand the difference in theproducts and back-up.' If you don't, try comparing a Wilderness Lightingproduct with a low-cost imitation. After that, you'll know exactly whatthey mean - and you'll never be tempted to waste your money on a cheapLED again!

Health and safety is the biggest issue in the Quarrying world and LEDs canalso help in this regard too. The LED light form wilderness lights are usingLEDs that give a very White light, this light give more contrast whenworking at night and also is closer to natural sunlight which the humaneye prefers, the Old halogen light gives out a yellow light which we haveto adapt to and this tires our eyes and can lead to driver fatigue. By usingLEDs this fatigue is no longer an issue and will lead to a safer and brighterworking environment. A 55w light gives out around 800 to 900 lumens, one Wilderness Compact light gives out over 3000 lumens. And only asksfor 1 Amp at 12 volts verses the 8 amps from the halogen. So if youreplace the eight halogen lights with either Wilderness compacts you willsave over 50 amps and have over 24000 lumens verses the old halogens6400 lumens.

Why DO Grade A LEDs Matter?

• They put out more light than lower-class LEDs -even with thesame rating

• They don't have to work as hard - so they last longer

• Products using them can be offered with a longer warranty

Why switch to LED?

Over three times brighter than a comparable sized halogen work light.

Uses 1/8th of the Amps of the Halogen light.

The white light provides better contrast when working in the dark.

The white light from LEDs is less tiring to work with than that of theyellow light from Halogens

The LEDs chips are impervious to vibration and do not blow.

The company's quality and value mean it's going placesfast and it's currently on the lookout for suitable demonstration vehicles totie up with, too! Wilderness is constantly building its presence in the UK.It's working hard to get your custom - and that means you can expectgreat prices to go with a great product! There are good LEDs, and there arecheap LEDs - there are no truly good LEDs at bargain prices but, if youwant fantastic value, Wilderness Lighting is definitely the place to go.

New jaw crushers squeeze costs atJ O'Doherty Haulage

J O'Doherty Haulage isbenefitting from wide-ranging economicsavings after theintroduction of two newTerex Finlay J-1170 jawcrushers at their NorthLondon based recyclingfacility.

Supplied by Finlay Plant SouthEast - part of the Finlay Group

of companies - the J-1170s are being used to produce Type 1recycled aggregate.

Previously a crusher and screener were used to produce thematerial, but each of the new machines are individually doingthe work of two machines - and also proving more frugal interms of diesel costs.

James O'Doherty, owner of J O'Doherty Haulage, said: “Weare really pleased with the machines. They are being used toproduce Type 1 recycled aggregate, and previously we had touse a screener in front of our old crusher, but that is notrequired with this. We can close the jaws down and crush tothe floor. The end result is that we need only one machineinstead of two to produce the recycled aggregate and as theJ-1170 performs well in terms of fuel efficiency we benefitfrom a double saving. Another advantage is that themachine's pre-screen takes out the fines before they enter thejaw, and that means less wear. We also gain from the serviceand support of Finlay Plant South East, with whom we have along-standing relationship.”

J O'Doherty Haulage was founded in 1987 by JamesO'Doherty, originally from County Clare, who started out as asingle owner driver. Now approaching 25 years in business, the company has grown from strength to strength, specialising in all aspects of haulage, waste transfer andrecycling, as well as skip and plant hire.

The focus of the business is on quality, careful management, and environmental protection - with high levels of customerservice - and a commitment to the latest technology to deliverrecycled products. James also has a demolition division,Embassy, which operates across London and provides materialto produce recycled aggregate.

The J-1170s are the first crushers introduced to the JO'Doherty fleet by Finlay Plant South East. They join TerexFinlay plant provided over the years including three 883s andone 694.

Leon Sheehy, managing director of Finlay Plant South East, said: “J O'Doherty Haulage is seeing considerable financialsavings following the introduction of the J-1170s.They aresuperb machines, which offer outstanding durability, efficiencyand value for money.”

The Terex Finlay J-1170 is a compact and aggressive trackedprimary jaw crusher, offering a range of valuable features forthe recycling and quarrying industries.

At the heart of the machine is a robust hydrostatically drivenTerex jaw chamber, which provides high capacity with largereduction ratios. The jaw chamber configuration can be set upspecifically for either processing construction demolitiondebris or quarrying applications. It also features a heavy dutyvariable speed VGF and integrated pre-screen giving excellentproduction throughput. Notable options include a variablespeed pan feeder along with an independent pre-screensystem.

Furthermore, its compact size, quick set up times, ease oftransport and user friendly operational features make the J-1170 ideal for operators of all sizes. The jaw chamber is alsoavailable with optional hydraulic release, of value whencrushing construction and demolition debris, due to anautomatic overload protection system preventing damage byuncrushable items in the feed material.

Mark Farren owns Woodford Recycling Services Ltd, starting

the business in 2010. Rational yet spectacular growth has

seen Mr Farren's operations encompass a national waste

brokerage service, skip hire, wood processing, crushing,

screening and waste processing with the latter achieving an

85% recyclables recovery rate from incoming waste streams.

Employing 20 personnel and covering Cambridgeshire and the

surrounding areas, Woodford Recycling Services decided to

source a new MRF from BlueMAC as part of a £2M

investment to increase its efficiency and capability in recycling

and reclamation whilst further improving vital and

environmentally desirable tip-to-landfill reductions. “We

looked at other potential suppliers as well as BlueMAC” said

Mark Farren “but we were highly impressed with the design

and robust build quality of the BlueMAC offering, as well as

Blue Machinery's in-depth knowledge and experience in

designing and installing waste recycling plant, with over 140

already at work throughout the UK. We visited the BlueMAC

factory to discuss our requirements and the design and

engineering capabilities we saw there gave us total

confidence in making our investment with the company.”

The MRF was designed to be installed in Woodford's brand

new under cover premises in Huntingdon, providing a

compact yet efficient materials flow from incoming waste

Renewable Energy Powers LatestBlueMAC MRF InstallationWoodford Recycling Services Ltd, based in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire has recently installed thelatest MRF to be designed and built by BlueMAC, supplied by Blue Machinery Central. What makesthis new and extremely efficient materials recycling facility so unusual is that it is believed to bethe very first installation of its kind to be powered by on site generated renewable energy, producing what is effectively a complete recycling loop. Through its subsidiary Woodford WasteManagement Services Ltd and Arevon Energy (who operate the biogas operation on site) the totalsource of power is provided for the entire plant, with 1 Megawatt also exported to the National Gridproviding enough electricity to supply 1500 homes.

stream to final separated and clean recyclable products. A belt

feeder conveys the material to an 8.5m long X 2.5m diameter

trommel screen, which features a split drum of 20mm mesh at

the front for extracting -20mm fines and a 40mm screen mesh

for the 20mm-40mm hardcore. A rightangle turn takes the

material on to a blower for “lights” removal and thence on to

the bespoke picking station, which is to commercial standard

with plugs, lighting and heating all standard with BlueMAC,

providing a safe, comfortable and productive working

environment for the picking teams. The picking station is a 5-

bay, double sided configuration with five drop chutes for

“valuables” such as non-ferrous metals. The conveyor then

takes the remaining hardcore under an overband magnet for

ferrous metals removal, before a secondary final blower gives

the material a last clean-up.

Woodford Recycling's BlueMAC MRF is designed to achieve a

throughput of 20 tonnes per hour which provides an

additional and future-proof capacity for Woodford Recycling

Finlay Group has introduced its first Trackstackplant into the country, with the installation of afast volume loader/unloader at Day Group'sglass recycling operation.

The VL1000 is taking recycled glass directly from tipper truckson to a barge on the Thames via a Trackstack 13.5 metreconveyor.

Supplied by Finlay Plant South East - part of the Finlay Groupof companies - the machine is based at Day Group's Murphy'sWharf recycling depot, based in Charlton, one of the UK'slargest recycling centres.

Adam Day, of Day Group, said: “The machine is workingbrilliantly. We previously used a long reach excavator, but itcould not deliver the volumes we can now achieve. As well asspeeding up the process we save on the cost of an excavator, and the fuel and labour, by operating this system. The V1000

is currently running at 600 tonnes an hour, although there isthe potential to run at up to 900 tonnes an hour if required. As well as sending out recycled glass, it has also been runningwith recycled aggregate. The incoming material is loadedseamlessly from the truck straight to the water. It's provingvery reliable, and we value the service and support we get onsite from Finlay South East, and their help with theprocurement and commissioning.”

Established by the late John Day, Day Group has beensupplying natural and recycled aggregates to the constructionand civil engineering industry since 1974. The glass recyclingbusiness has been operating for the last 12 years and exportsover 30,000 tonne a year.

John's son, Alan Day, is Chairman of the business, and he issupported by his four sons who all work for the Group.DayGroup has benefitted from major investment in state of the

art recycling plant and associated facilities over the years. Thecompany has a long-standing relationship with Finlay SouthEast - regularly hiring machines from the plant hire arm of thebusiness.

The Trackstack has been built to a bespoke specification tomeet Day Group's exact needs. Leon Sheehy, managingdirector of Finlay Plant South East worked with Day Group tointroduce the machine on the site.

Leon said: “As part of the installation process, we workedclosely with Day's site manager to find out the company'sexact needs. Features including redesigned load-up ramps forthe lorries, covers and enclosed spillage boards were allintroduced. The sheer price of fuel in operating machinery tomove material, and labour costs, makes a compelling case forthe introduction of the Trackstack bulk handling system in thistype of environment. As well as glass, the machinery canhandle a broad range of material, and it is versatile, highlymobile and quick to set-up.”

The Trackstack VL1000 is a low-level receiving hopper, featuring a radial boom conveyor fitted onto a single trackmounted chassis for ease of movement and rapid set-up time.It features a 130Hp (100Kw) Caterpillar 6 cylinder engine, 4.5metre wide Horizontal Receiving Hopper, which feeds onto a1.2 metre wide, 15 metre long radial discharge with a 120

degree radial slew. There is also the option of a 9.5 metre or a13.5 metre discharge conveyor, as supplied at Day Group.TheVL1000 can be fed by wheeled loader, excavator or tippingtruck and can be used to load barges, trains and forstockpiling. It can also integrate with the Tesab range ofcrushers and screeners.

The full range of Trackstack loaders and unloaders includesthe 6542TCL for containers and vessels, and the 802TDF witha direct feed hopper.

Finlay Group recently announced it was moving into newmarkets after securing the dealership for Trackstack inEngland and Wales.

Manufactured at a five-acre facility in Omagh, Trackstack ispart of the world renowned Tesab Group, and the machineryhas been used around the globe with the productsconstructed to a 'built to last' ethos, with a strong emphasison quality.

As well as being available to buy, the Trackstack products canbe introduced on to site through Finlay Hire.

A fast replacement parts service is also available fromMidlands-based Sure Equipment Spares (SES).

New 883 Spaleck Fires UpRecycling Operation AtJohnsons Aggregates andRecyclingJohnsons Aggregates and Recycling hasintroduced a high-speed Terex Finlay 883Spaleck to power through the processing ofincinerator waste ash.

The waste product is being put through the machine at thecompany's site in Nottingham, to produce road constructionmaterials.

Supplied by Finlay Central - part of the Finlay Group ofcompanies - the Terex Finlay Spaleck is transformingprocessing activity on site with its power and performance.

Central to the machine's exceptional capability is the two-deck German designed and constructed screenbox. The heavyduty vibrating screen offers nearly blockage-free screening inthe upper and lower deck thanks to tried and tested 3D andFlip-Flow technology. The 3D screening segments guaranteecorrect grain size with no long pieces or extraneous materialfor the tension shaft screen on the lower deck, while the Flip-Flow screen - featuring screwless mounted screen mats -avoids unnecessary cleaning.

By combining two system solutions in one machine, the 883Spaleck offers significant savings on conveying equipment, steel structures and space.

At Johnsons Aggregates and Recycling, the Terex Finlay 883Spaleck is products sized 10 mm down, 10 - 50mm and 50mm up.

Steve Johnson, director and founder of Johnsons Aggregatesand Recycling, said: “It's exactly what we want. The machineis versatile and can process extreme products that typicallystruggle through conventional screens. The additionalvibration enables the waste ash material to release itself, so itavoids clogs, and it also handles the product's abrasiveconsistency. The self-cleaning mechanism is also very useful.”

Neil Bailey, Sales Engineer of Finlay Central, said: “The TerexFinlay 883 Spaleck's processing capabilities and applicationflexibility make the machine an 'all in one' mobile solution forprocessing difficult waste, including recycling, slag, C&D,shredded metal, wood, compost, mulch, ores, coal and soil. It's delivering really exceptional performance out on sites.”

Marston's a West Midlands brewery has startedto ensure that they minimise their beer duty byclaiming a refund on the 'dregs' from theirreturned kegs and casks. Known as 'ullage', thisis often only thought of as a beer unfit forconsumption but has quite a wide definition. With duty being paid on all beer leaving abrewery it seems sensible to reclaim any duty onbeer which is returned.

Before sterilising the casks and kegs prior to being filled withfresh product, any beer remaining in the container is emptiedand collected in a trade approved (ullage) vessel. Thisprocedure then allows the weights, and therefore the volumesto be recorded and any beer duty previously paid can then bere-claimed.

With a current maintenance and calibration contract in placewith Precia-Molen, Marston's placed an order for them toupgrade the current system. Precia-Molen supplied a newstamped ullage 'return' vessel and replaced all the indicatorson the holding vessels. A platform scale was also supplied tocompliment the ullage vessel.

The Marston ullage vessel is basically a tank on load cellswhich is calibrated for trade use and recalibrated on a regularbasis under the contract previously mentioned. Precia-Molenredesigned this vessel to incorporate four load cells, andoversize foundation plates which facilitate the regular use of aforce calibration rig to recalibrate and complete thereverification of the vessel for trade use. A model I200 weightindicator was also supplied to complete the installation.

OPERATING PRINCIPLE/CONSTRUCTION

The crushing cams of wear-resistant steel aremounted on the roller shaft in staggered positions, accurately spaced so that they pass between the crushing and stripping combswhich are mounted laterally on opposite sides of the inner housing. Both sets of combs are identical in design but havedifferent functions.

The bearing plates at both ends of the housing accommodate the roller bearings, protected by radial seals, in which the shaftrotates. These bearing housings can be offered in extended mountings to allow for cooling when processing high temperaturematerials such as power station ash. The second shaft of the Double Roll Crusher is driven by grease-lubricated gear wheels onthe outside of the housing.
