October Gallery OWUSU-ANKOMAH MICROCRON-KUSUM
October Gallery will exhibit a body of new works by the renowned artist Owusu-Ankomah. Born in Sekondi, Ghana, in 1956, Owusu-Ankomah pursued studies in Fine Arts at Ghanatta
College in Accra before moving to Bremen, Germany where he now lives and works. His charged paintings on canvas depict an alternate world wherein monumental human figures –
his core motif – are shown moving within an ocean of signs that surround, support and, in fact, define them. The way in which these figures coexist and interact with various symbolic
sets has developed through distinct phases over time, reflecting Owusu-Ankomah’s own journey of spiritual discovery.

The Frontline Club Screening The Nigerian Connection (2011)
Followed by a Q&A with Producer/Reporter Juliana Ruhfus
and Director Orlando von Einsiedel
The Nigerian Connection explores the web of organised crime, prostitution and human
trafficking stretching from West Africa to Europe. It exposes the work of the mafia-style gangs operating in towns and villages across Nigeria who exploit men, women, and children for
their criminal activities from drugs to sex slavery
In Italy the Nigerian gangs come into direct conflict with the traditional Italian mob members but their influence has nonetheless spread across Europe. The Nigerian Connection
investigates the plight of the men and women caught up in this web of crime, exploitation and violence and asks important question of how its spread can be stopped. How can two
continents unite to save lives?

31st Cambridge Film Festival 15-25 September 2011 BLOOD IN THE MOBILE
documentary by director Frank Piasecki Poulsen.
The main part of minerals used to produce cell phones are coming from the mines in the
Eastern DR Congo. The Western World is buying these so-called conflict minerals, financing a civil war that, according to human rights organisations, has been the bloodiest conflict since World War II: During the last 15 years the conflict has cost the lives of more than 5 million
people and 300.000 women have been raped. The war will continue as long as armed groups can finance their warfare by selling minerals.
Blood in Mobile is a film about our responsibility for the conflict in the Congo and about
corporate social responsibility.

communities as it is about ceasefire on the international stage. Everyone has a role to play. The O2 Arena show launches a 365-day countdown.”

Tiata Delights 2011 at the The Africa Centre
MIDNIGHT TRAIN TO SUNRISE by Sibusiso Mamba (Swaziland/ South Africa)
a brutal, lyrical ‘State-of-the-Nation’ examination of an African Superpower
The year is 2010 and the world hot-foots its way to Africa’s Southern Colossus for the
‘Greatest Show on Earth’. Deep, deep underground two men dig around the clock making ready the way for a multi-million dollar transport link. But all of sudden a train is hurtling
towards them, on tracks yet to be built and in a tunnel that does not yet exist…Where has it come from? Where is it going to? And why does the conductor insist that the diggers get on?
Co-created with Ricardo Khan, at The World Theatre Lab, Johannesburg. Originally commissioned and produced by the University of Missouri Kansas City Theatre Department.
Subsequently produced at Crossroads Theatre Company, New Brunswick NJ and further developed with RADA Graduate Workshops, London
Curated by Artistic Director Lucian Msamati

A Play
29 September – 8 October 2011
An epic journey through Zimbabwe's turbulent history. A true story that is poignant, political and personal, this beautifully realised one-man show brings to life the human drama behind
the history and the headlines. Following the dream of majority rule, one man sees Ian Smith's Rhodesia become Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe. From refugee camps in Botswana to air strikes
in Zambia via Marxism in Bulgaria, he returns to Zimbabwe, only to witness the greatest betrayal of all...
This piece brings to the stage one man’s real life experience of the new Zimbabwe

In his 2011 memoir, It Happened on the Way to War, Barcott explores the contrasts of
community development in Africa and counter-insurgency in the Marines as they clashed and converged in his head and heart, recounting his experiences building and learning from leaders in unlikely places – from the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya, to the bomb-strewn
streets of Fallujah and beyond.

VIP event sponsored by Adams & Moore organised by the Business Council for Africa, West & Southern featuring a presentation by
His Excellency The Nigeria High Commissioner
Dr. Dalhatu Tafida, OFR
on Nigeria's immediate prospects.
DOING BUSINESS NIGERIA
Following the recent Nigeria elections and the appointment of the new cabinet, attention is turning to Nigeria's prospects in coming months. There is no better person to give an insight into recent and forthcoming developments in Nigeria than the Nigeria High Commissioner,
His Excellency Dr. Dalhatu Tafida, OFR.
Dr. Tafida has recently returned to London from Nigeria where, in his capacity as Director-General of the Jonathan / Sambo election campaign, he successfully managed President
Jonathan's election. Understanding the present political and economic climate is one thing but what about the technicalities of actually doing business in Nigeria?
To assist BCA members and potential members to get a better understanding of
the practicalities of doing business in Nigeria, London-based Nigerian lawyer, Dele Ogun, and BCA member, Adams and Moore, will effect short presentations to sort myth from reality.

Alex Perry, Author and Africa Bureau Chief, Time magazine
Alex Perry will discuss his new book, which documents two years on the trail of a campaign to eradicate malaria. The disease still infects around half a billion people a year, and kills close to a million of them. Drawing on the history of efforts to combat malaria, Alex Perry will explore
the complex politics of eradication projects, development and aid in Africa.
He will argue that whilst there have been successes in the fight against malaria, considerable challenges remain.

Annual Inception Lecture 2011
DIRECT ACTION:
A NECESSARY PRESCRIPTION FOR DEMOCRACY? The first Inception Lecture will be delivered by the Rt Hon. David Lammy, MP
Rt Hon. David Lammy, MP
Chair: Professor Graham Furniss, SOAS Pro-Director (Research & Enterprise)
The SOAS School of Law hosts its first Annual Inception Lecture, delivered by a notable
alumnus or alumna of the SOAS School of Law, addressing a topical subject of general public interest relating to the role of law in society in a broad sense. The inception lecture is
intended to serve as an inspiration for our students, contribute to public debate and enhance our academic environment.
In this lecture, David Lammy will draw on the history of direct action and civil disobedience, from Gandhi’s non-violent resistance to British rule in India to the campaign against South
African apartheid. He will compare the student protests of 1968 and the Arab Spring with the protest movement currently taking root in university campuses and community groups across

Royal African Society Book launch TAX HAVENS AND FINANCIAL SINKHOLES: AFRICA’S ODIOUS DEBTS
With authors James Boyce and Leonce Ndikumana,
Respondent John Christenson (Director, International Secretariat, Tax Justice Network) Chair Professor John Weeks (SOAS)
contrary to the popular perception of Africa being a drain on the financial resources of the West, the continent is actually a net creditor to the rest of the world. The extent of capital
flight from sub-Saharan Africa is remarkable: more than $700 billion in the past four decades. But Africa’s foreign assets remain private and hidden, while its foreign debts are public, owed
by the people of Africa through their governments.

with author Theodore Trefon and Ben Shepherd (Chatham House) responding.
Congo Masquerade is about the mismanagement, hypocrisy and powerlessness in what has proved to be one of Africa's most troublesome and volatile states. The book demonstrates that Congo has been for years an almost unmitigated failure due to the ingrained political
culture of corruption amongst the Congolese elite, abetted by the complicity and incompetence of international partners.

IS SOUTH AFRICA MORE EQUAL TODAY THAN WHEN APARTHEID ENDED IN 1994?
Dr Max Price
CHAIR: Prossor Judith Rees
South Africa was one of the most unequal countries in the world in 1994. Since then, the
democratic governments have pursued policies aimed at reducing inequality through economic development with relatively high rates of growth. And yet, household surveys and other data sources suggest that inequality in South African society may have increased. So
what is going on?

clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcKPi5DyGWs
In World War 2 thousands of African-American troops were sent to fight for freedom and democracy on behalf of the USA which refused black people to right to vote. Initially the Armed Forces were reluctant to use black troops but due to the agitation of the US black
community and the increasing casualty rate segregated units like the 92nd Infantry, the 761 Black Panther Tank Battalion and the Tuskeegee airmen were sent into action.
The film follows the exploits of the 92nd infantry division and their activities in Italy when a small unit is trapped behind enemy lines and discovers a priceless artefact, a massive war
crime and a supernatural statue.
The film will be followed by a Q and A with a WW2 veteran

OVERCOMING SOCIAL BARRIERS
the contemporary and historical role played by women in the film, television and video industries in Africa.
From the Arab North Africa, West Africa, Central and East Africa, through to Southern Africa, women have emerged from the double oppression of patriarchy and colonialism to become the unsung heroines of the moving image as producers, directors, actresses, script writers, financiers, promoters, marketers and distributors of film, television and video in postcolonial Africa
such contributions by women are underrepresented, both in industry debates and in academic research
There are now many cases in which African women in front of and behind the camera have overcome social barriers and yet this is sidelined.
students, practitioners, academics and researchers are invited to debate how women have contributed to film, television and video markets in Africa from pre-colonial, colonial to
postcolonial periods.
Papers can include the following themes: - The Influence of Feminism on African filmmakers - Women in front and behind the camera in African film - Women in the African feature film industry - Women in technical roles in film, video and television in Africa - Women documentary makers in Africa - Gender and Representation of Women in African film - Audiences for films by African women/Female audiences in Africa - Case histories of leading African women film makers - Women scriptwriters - African women acting in video, film and television - Censorship and the portrayal of African women in film and television - The role of NGOs in commissioning women filmmakers and issue-based films - How African governments have helped or hindered filmmaking by African women

by Kevin Shillington
published by Aldridge Press, September 2010
“a powerful and moving account of one man’s remarkable resistance to colonial rule” Shula Marks, Emeritus Professor, School of Oriental and African Studies
Luka Jantjie’s place in history has been overshadowed by events elsewhere. This book
redresses the balance. This new biography recovers the history of this remarkable man and his Batswana people – a history which was effectively obliterated by the forced removals and land
confiscations which followed events in the Langeberg.

BEWARE 0F THE DRAGON: Africa should not look to China
We all We all know that the Chinese are the neo-colonialists of Africa. They’ve plundered the continent of its natural resources, tossing aside any concern for human rights and doing deals with some of the world’s most unsavoury regimes. The relentless pursuit of growth is China’s
only spur.
But is this picture really fair?
In Angola, for example, China’s low-interest loans have been tied to a scheme that has ensured that roads, schools and other infrastructure has been built. China has an impressive track record of lifting its own millions out of poverty and can do the same for Africa. And is the West’s record in Africa as glowing as we like to think? After decades of pouring aid into Africa, how much have we actually achieved in terms of reducing poverty, corruption and
war? So which way should Africa look for salvation – to the West, to China, or perhaps to its own people? Come to the debate and decide for yourself.

Luka Jantjie: Resistance Hero of the South African Frontier, by Kevin Shillington, published by Aldridge Press, September 2010.
“a powerful and moving account of one man’s remarkable resistance to colonial rule”
Shula Marks, Emeritus Professor, School of Oriental and African Studies
Luka Jantjie is a neglected hero of resistance to British colonialism in South Africa. His place in history has been overshadowed by events elsewhere. This book redresses the balance. Born around 1835 and brought up as a literate Christian, Luka developed an abiding respect for peace and non-violence. But his refusal to give in to local colonisers intensified their hostility. Luka was twice forced to take up arms to defend himself and his people. This struggle culminated in a violent six-month siege in 1897 in the rugged landscape of the Langeberg on the southern fringes of the Kalahari. This new biography recovers the history of this remarkable man and his Batswana people – a history which was effectively obliterated by the forced removals and land confiscations which followed events in the Langeberg. ORDER DETAILS: Price: £18.95 paperback; 336 pages; illustrated with 250 pictures – contemporary and modern – includes 30 colour photos, 22 maps.
