Ergonomics (Human Factor Science) is an applied science concerned with the characteristics of people that need to be considered in designing things that they use in order that people and things will interact most effectively and safely (Merriam Webster)
Human Factor Engineering (Applied Ergonomics) is concerned with the application of the data and principles of human factors and ergonomics to the design of equipment, subsystems, and systems (Christensen, 1987)
Ergonomics (Human Factor Science) + Human Factor Engineering (Applied Ergonomics)
Ergonomics provides basic theories/reference for HFE while HFE give requirement inputs for ergonomics scientific development.

Scope of ErgonomicsErgonomics is about designing for people, wherever they interact with products, systems or processes. Whatever the human can interact with, they are the scope of the ergonomics study
Levels of Ergonomics
Source: http:Samaras & Associate (www.samaras-assoc.com)
Ergonomics analysis may be conducted towards single individual to society level where for each level might use different tools, techniques, and even methodologies.
Engineering: the application of science and mathematics by which the properties of matter and the sources of energy in nature are made useful to people (Merriam Webster)
Industrial Engineering: engineering that deals with the design, improvement, and installation of integrated systems (as of people, materials, and energy) in industry (Merriam Webster)
Industrial System Engineering: is an engineering that deals with design, installation, and improvement of integrated systems of people, material, information, equipment, and energy by drawing upon specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences, together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems (Womack and Jones 1996).
Engineering Management: a specialized form of management that is concerned with the application of engineering principles to business practice. Engineering management is a career that brings together the technological problem-solving savvy of engineering and the organizational, administrative, and planning abilities of management in order to oversee complex enterprises from conception to completion (http://www.allengineeringschools.com/engineering-degree/all-degrees/engineering-management/california).

Connection Between Ergonomics/HFE and Industrial Engineering
Ergonomics simply supports Industrial Engineering in improving designed, product, manufacture, and management system. Reversely, industrial fields over interesting object to study for ergonomics/HFE.As long as an industry still use human resource, ergonomics will take very important role.

Ergonomics in environment and transportation seems to be the most popular study in the last 3 years and still potentially grow for the next years while HCI is still to be the most consistent topic by ± 50 articles per 3 years.Ergo-psychology also shows good potentiality since many research start to consider mental work load beside physical.

Conclusion & Recommendation:In ergonomics, you can easily modify your roadmap since this study is applicable in many problem based objects. You should consider trend topics wisely. Since the topics already studied by many researcher, you need strong/specific competence to be deeper, if don’t, your research position will be unclear. Sometimes the new or unique issue can provide better originality and novelty to your research. Alternatively, you may split your roadmap to be more accommodative to the new issue.
