USES
We use the passive voice:
• To emphasize the action rather than the person who did it (the agent).
Example: The new library was built last year.
• When we don’t know who did the action.
Example: The window was broken last night.
• When it is easy to understand who did the action.

CHANGING FROM ACTIVE TO PASSIVE VOICE
We change a sentence from active to passive voice in the following way:
• The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.
• We use the verb to be in the same form as the verb in the active sentence.
• We use the past participle of the main verb in the active sentence.
• We use the word by if we want to say who performed the action.

The weather affects everyone, but some people react to changes in the weather more thanothers. For several years, doctors have been studying people who become depressed whenthe seasons change. Scientists are trying to understand the causes ofSAD. They think the main

there is less sunlight. Anothercause is related to thechanges in body temperaturethat occur during the winter.
The effects of SAD
