Rhythm Section Jazz Band at the Fine Arts Center
In October, treat yourself to an afternoon concert! Paul Sherwood and his Rhythm Section Jazz Band will delight you with their “little big band’s” swing music influ-enced by Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Stan Ken-ton, Frank Sinatra, and more. Saugatuck Day Trip
In September, travel to Saugatuck for a boat ride on the Kalamazoo River and Lake Michigan, a historical tour aboard a motorcoach or free-time for browsing the little shops and galleries. See page 2 for date and details.

Choose between getting the quadrivalent flu shot (which protects against four different strains of flu, for any age) or the Vaccine with Adjuvant shot (approved for those 65 and old-er). These are administered by Spectrum Health Visiting Nurse Association at our Center.
No reservations are required. Spectrum Health Visiting Nurse Association will bill most Medi-care insurance providers. Please come with the name of your primary provider, as well as your actual Medicare card.
Without coverage, cost is $55 for the regular flu shot, or $75 for the vaccine with Adjuvant.

Day trip cost: $74 per person ($76 for non-residents). Price includes Great Lakes Motorcoach transportation, paddleboat cruise, lunch and beverage on boat, step-on history guide, and trip guide fee. Tipping is optional for the motorcoach driver, and Forest Hills trip guide Karen Horrigan.

Enjoy Michigan’s beauty with a day trip to the lakeshore town of Saugatuck. Throughout its history, artists have been drawn to the magnificent dunes, pristine beaches and jewel-like setting on Lake Michigan’s shore.
During today’s trip, take in the scenery on a leisurely paddle-boat ride, learn about the area’s history during an optional on-bus tour or walk the downtown area on your own. We’ll fin-ish the journey with a visit to one of the art galleries.
9:30 a.m. Arrive at Forest Hills Community Services. Please check-in inside the building. 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Enjoy a paddleboat tour by Star of Sau-gatuck Boat Cruises on the Kalamazoo River and Lake Michi-gan. A boxed lunch will be served on the boat: fresh Kaiser roll sandwich with deli style turkey, fresh fruit, chips, cookies. In-cludes coffee or soda. 12:30 p.m. —2:00 p.m. You choose between: History motorcoach tour: sit back and relax aboard the
motorcoach for a guided tour of Saugatuck and Douglas by historian Marsha Kontio.

Shopping/walking: Enjoy 90 minutes on your own to shop and walk downtown Saugatuck and/or along the lakeshore on the boardwalk.
2:00 p.m. Our group will gather back together on the motorcoach and stop at the J. Petter Art and Wine Gallery. View the collec-tion of paintings and sculptures in their 12,000 square foot build-ing. Optional: sip on soda or wine and nibble on snacks as you stroll through the gallery (food/drink is extra.)

Relax in the company of friends at the Cascade Township Library's Wisner Center. Enjoy a picnic lunch prepared by Carole’s Catering and musical entertainment by Tom and Cherie Lynn Hagen. This free event is sponsored by Cascade Township. Even though it’s open to everyone, Cascade Township residents received their invitation first (via the Cascade newsletter) in June. The Cascade Library is located at 2870 Jack Smith Ave. SE, just off 28th St., near Thornhills.

About on-line Learning Café registrations: If you enroll for a regular Learning Café program online at our website, enjoylearning.com, you are automatically included in the catered lunch order. If you intend to come to the “program only”, please make your reservations via phone.
About cancellations: If you find that you cannot attend the Learning Café program, whether you registered on-line or by phone, please call us by 2:00 p.m. on the Friday prior. This way, the total count with the caterer can be adjusted. If we don’t hear from you, an invoice for the cost of your lunch will be sent to you in the mail.
Before any Learning Café program begins, switch your telecoil-equipped hearing aid to “T” mode. The presenter’s voice in the microphone will provide a clear, customized sound inside your ears!

Between now and October, you will have the option of pre-paying for the Learning Café OR paying at the door when you arrive. In the 1930s, by age 6, 80% of children nationwide had an average of 14 cavities. By age 55, half of Americans needed dentures. In 1945, Grand Rapids was selected to study the effects of fluoride treatment on schoolchildren. Chase Klinesteker DDS will share Grand Rapids’ re-markable results, his family’s personal connection with these medical studies, and the world-wide effects of having fluoridated water. Chase is a retired dentist after 43 years in general dentistry.

The songwriting teams of the 1920s through 1940s include the incom-parable duo of George and Ira Gershwin. Join jazz singer and pianist Robin Connell as she performs some of her favorite Gershwin songs (such as “Our Love is Here to Stay” and “S’Wonderful”), and shares a bit of history about the talented Gershwin brothers. Robin was named the 2017 West Michigan Jazz Society’s Musician of the Year.

Save the Date: Kalamazoo Day Trip Thursday, Nov. 8 You can register starting in late September. Enjoy lunch at Theo & Stacy’s restaurant in Kalamazoo. Dine on your choice of roasted chicken, sizzle steak, ham, perch or tilapia. Includes sides, drink and dessert. After lunch, visit the Kalamazoo Air Zoo. With more than 50 fixed and rotary wing aircraft on display, you can walk through history from a replica of the first Wright Flyer, to World War II era fighters and bombers, all the way up to the modern and one-of-a-kind SR-71B Blackbird - the fastest plane ever built. The Air Zoo is a world-class, Smith-sonian-affiliated aer-ospace and science museum with unique aircraft & spacecraft, inspiring interactive ex-hibits, and full-motion flight simulators.

Walking Tour of Downtown GR
Thursday, October 11 9:15 a.m.—1:30 p.m. Get a new perspective of our city by walking and viewing downtown's historic sites, interesting buildings and more. This one-hour walking tour takes place after ArtPrize is over and is facilitat-ed by Grand Rapids Running/Walking Tours. Lunch follows at Bistro Bella Vita. Choose be-tween a grilled chicken sandwich, beef brisket melt sandwich, Caesar salad with chicken, or Margherita pizza. Includes coffee, tea, soda. Indi-cate lunch preference when registering. Please wear comfortable shoes and be dressed for the weather. This trip goes on rain or shine. Day trip cost: $34 per person ($36 for non-residents). Diabetes: Managing Your Sweet Life Tuesday, September 18 1:00—2:30 p.m. Community Services, 660 Forest Hill Ave SE No charge! Diabetes can be overwhelming at times, but the goal of this class is to help you identify a personal plan for staying on top of your diabetes self-care. General recommendations will be outlined, including the benefits of goal setting.
In this class, instructor Michelle Lalick will help you:
Plan your year: what to expect with each doctor visit, every 3-6 months, yearly
Taking action: one or two goals to work on, health concerns to review with your doctor
Ongoing considerations: scheduling your follow up, seeking support, continuing the conversation
