The Chief Guest’s Speech
Prof. Sadagopan, Chairman, Board of Governors, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM), Kancheepuram, Mr Arun Jain, Chairman and Managing Director- Intellect Design Arena Chennai, the Guest of Honour, Prof Banshidhar Majhi, Director, Members of the Board of Governors, Members of the Senate, faculty members and supportive staff, esteemed guests, my dear students, ladies and gentlemen.
I deem it a privilege to be invited to address the 8th Convocation of Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM), Kancheepuram. I would like to thank Prof. Sadagopan, Chairperson, Board of Governors, Members of the Senate and the Director of IIITDM- Kancheepuram, Prof Majhi, for extending this honour to me. My warmest greetings to each and every one of you who are present today on campus and have joined virtually on this august occasion.
Kancheepuram referred to as the Silk city is synonymous for its hand woven silk sarees. It houses the country’s best and lucrative silk saree industries with most of the city's workforce involved in the weaving silk sarees with exquisite details and of uncompromising quality. This city finds its reference in early Sanskrit texts dating back to 3rd century BC and also in classical Tamil Sangam literature. Kancheepuram has been described as “the best among cities” by 4th century poet Kalidasa. Being ruled by the Pallavas, Cholas and the Vijaynagar empires, Kancheepuram is replete with architectural marvels and historically was not only famous as hub of learning but also a centre of advanced religious education in Jainism and Buddhism. This institute associated with this revered name of Kancheepuram, provides a traditionally unique setting, with all the necessary ingredients for the inspirational minds of the students to bring out their highest level of creativity and originality and to perform academic activities at the peak of excellence.
Dear students, let me warmly congratulate all those of you who have the proud privilege of graduating from this esteemed institution today. My best wishes go with you, for your success and for achieving what you have been aspiring and dreaming. The spirit of competition and determination with which you met the challenges of the demanding ecosystem of this alma mater of yours will help you move ahead to realize your ambitions and aspirations with confidence. To have had the opportunity to study at this institution of higher learning is a matter of privilege to each one of you. May the value system that this institution has instilled in you inspire you to set high standards in all your
12
future endeavors. High and noble aspirations are indeed the guiding stars in your journey, towards, achieving perfection and realizing your true potential.
I am particularly happy today, to learn about the commendable journey, your institution has made within a short span of 13 years. Your motto of ‘learning by doing’ is both unique and inspiring. More so, it symbolizes the need of the country. As I see from the reports, IIITDM Kancheepuram has achieved tremendous success in creating an urge and strong desire among students in the sphere of Design.
The institute focuses on futuristic and multi-disciplinary courses with a blend of design and engineering curriculum, which could make the graduates to be industry-ready. Institutes with such a profile will transform our nation into a hub for design and manufacturing. Indeed, the institute is playing a critical role in our country’s effort towards ‘Make in India’ campaign launched by our Prime Minister. The pace of making in India will be accelerated by the focus on design in India.
The vision of India’s new educational system has been crafted to ensure that it touches the life of each and every citizen consistent with their needs and necessities; besides, creating a just and equitable society. The approach is to realize a new system aligned with aspirational goals of 21st century education while remaining rooted to India’s value systems and ethos. The policy provides an integrated, yet flexible approach to education. Further, it has kept the interconnectedness of the various phases of education in mind and how the same will enable continuity, coherence and processes to ultimately realize an end-to-end educational road-map for the country. Major emphasis is given in the policy to the aspect of holistic, multi-disciplinary education as a foundational component at all levels of education.
I use this opportunity to delve a little more about the holistic and multi-disciplinarily character of the higher educational system in the new education policy. This holistic nature of education, also called as Liberal education in contemporary discussions, traces its origin to the age-old idea of liberal arts discussed almost 1400 years ago in the classical Indian texts on education like Banabhatta’s Kadambari, wherein a truly educated person was described as one who had mastered all the 64 kalas- a composite of a number of multidisciplinary subjects.
In a similar perspective, Albert Einstein once said and I quote, “All religions, arts, and sciences are branches from the same tree.” This holistic view of all human knowledge and inquiry as fundamentally connected and is reflected in history of higher education to the present day. This view holds that a broad and
13
interwoven education is essential to the preparation of citizens for life, work and civic participation.
Even though there is a preponderance of graduate programs that focus on single or sub-discipline, there is an emergence of inter-disciplinary graduate programs with many institutions working to promote greater inter-disciplinarily in graduate training and scholarship. It is also interesting to note that established integrative fields such as science, technology and society; sustainability; human computer interaction; bioethics; and many others offer models of successful integrative graduate program. In this specific context, I would like to bring in the importance of knowledge related to arts, crafts, architecture and aesthetics as a part of science and engineering education through a very interesting example. It is often lamented that India produces very competent scientists and engineers, but falls short of being great innovators. Steve Jobs, founder of Apple was asked on what makes his products successful; according to him the secret was to bring top notch aesthetics with top notch science and engineering. He himself is known to have said about why the Macintosh computer revolutionized computing and I quote: “I think part of what made the Macintosh great was that the people working on it were musicians and poets and artists and zoologists and historians, who also happen to be the best computer scientists in the world”.
As a crucial step to lead India into the 21st century and the fourth industrial revolution, multidisciplinary education is central. Engineering schools, such as the IITs and even your institution, will move towards more holistic multidisciplinary education with more arts and humanities, while arts and humanities students will aim to learn more science - while all will make an effort to incorporate more vocational subjects and soft skills. I am sure this institute with its plans for bringing multi-disciplinarity and holisticity to its various courses could be in the forefront of creating world-class innovators and producing seminal ideas coming out of a thinking process that cuts across disciplines by marrying Science education with arts and humanities and other fields.
My dear students, as you embark on this journey today, the world is taking a radical makeover due to pandemic. There is a far-reaching requirement of technological changes due to social distancing and other norms. It is a tectonic shift in the way we are going to do business in the future. This would result in technological evolution in the building blocks of technology today, i.e. hardware, data, software and connectivity. Your service is required in all the frontier areas of technological research such as Internet of Things, smart phone applications, smart manufacturing, big data analytics, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, 3D printing, robotics, healthcare and so on. I am happy to note that this
14
institute has identified four broad areas for its academic and research work which includes health care, smart manufacturing, Internet of Things among others. I am also happy to note that the institute is introducing Design Spine in its course curriculum extending complete flexibility to students to select the course.
My young friends, a word about what is in store for you. When you step out from the secure environment of this institution, you have to face the world which is full of challenges and uncertainties. In the very heart of challenges, there are hidden opportunities. Further, in the progress of your life, you will certainly come across hurdles, handicaps and failures. I can only advise that for everything you do, have a strong conviction, have the persistence to follow through your conviction and have the courage to face failures. I still remember the events in ISRO related to the failures of the first two Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicles (ASLV). Even though, a sense of despondency overtook us initially, we did not allow this setback to override our resolve to succeed. I should say, the critical analysis and the in-depth assessment of the problems we made and the technology and quality issues that we addressed really paved the way for the success of the present generation of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLVs) and Geosynchronous Satellite Launch vehicles (GSLVs). In analyzing the failures, we got an insight into the inadequacies and the marginal nature of our initial design. Further, our courage of conviction made us work with redoubled vigor to succeed which we did. I have often felt that life can teach you more from a failure than through success.
Notwithstanding the considerations of professionalism, challenges, opportunities, risk and so on, you need to explore the limitless frontier of knowledge throughout your life. My dear friends, the path to great achievements and success will put enormous demands on you and call upon you to bring to bear the highest degree of professionalism inspired by being a part of a fast changing knowledge ecosystem. This in turn will imply continuous updating of your knowledge and thus making the process of learning a lifelong experience. In the context of the need for graduates to be adaptable lifelong learners, here is what Alvin Toffler the American writer and futurist had to say and I quote:
“The illiterates of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those, who cannot, learn, unlearn and relearn”
In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that as inheritors of a society which blossomed up great values for life and a deep concern for human development, you should intensely aspire for deepening and broadening your knowledge, learn to experience the power of collective team work, and always be guided by
15
higher values which you believe in. In all that lies before you, may God grant you wisdom, success and true sense of fulfilment of your cherished ideals and goals. I wish you all the very best in your professional and personal life.
Thank you!

Guest of Honour Speech Esteemed Chief Guest Dr.K Kasturirangan, Chairperson of NEP Committee and
former chairman ISRO, the elite institution of our country; Prof. Sadagopan,
Chairman BoG of IIITDM Kancheepuram, Prof. Banshidar Majhi, Director and
other dignitaries who are present in this occasion.
It is a great pride that I’m participating in the 8th convocation of this institute
which is built for excellence by the leadership of the Board of Governors, the
faculty and the senate which is designing beautiful academics programs.
I must appreciate all of you who are passing out of this institute with distinction
and this institute will take a pride when you get successful in an industry. Your
fundamentals are laid by this institute and I always appreciate that the focus on
design and manufacturing, an institute on just design and manufacturing; and a
focus on design spine as a curriculum. I think it’s very unique not only in India
but in global world, where we are able to focus on design. It is about design
which drives last 2% to 200%. So, the value any product which you are
designing, 98% in the world are similar, it’s just the 2% which drives the value
to 200% in the system. That is what the intensity and passion when you are
going to the field; I will insist on that you should have a passion to go into
details of everything what you are doing, details mean at micro level.
I’ll tell you all a story of one incident: A family of 4 people used to go to buy ice-
cream every evening, and they bought a new car and everybody was very happy
and in the car they use to travel to the ice-cream shop. After some time, when
they used to buy a chocolate ice-cream, the car never used to start and when
they buy a strawberry ice-cream, the car used to get started. Now they called up
a company person and said that when they go to ice-cream shop; someday the
car starts and someday it doesn’t. That is the report which is given to the service
center. Now that this is a new car and how can that be possible that it doesn’t
start for few times, and therein the service engineer went there. He couldn’t able
to locate the problem there and his manager went there and then he started
looking at the situation. He went with the person for multiple days to diagnose
the problem and the problem was diagnosed that when he used to buy
strawberry, the counter location was in a particular place where it takes lesser
time and that’s why he comes back early, the fuel ignition plug was not getting
rightly ignited and that was the cause of the problem.
19
I think, this is about the customer empathy that whenever there is a problem in
the design, you need to look at it, what is the real issue at the customer empathy
at that point of time. The next point I want to look at it, but from design to
customer empathy, is how you are observing the patterns. This year, there are
two Nobel laureates, one in physics and one in chemistry. The physics Nobel
prize is given for black hole, which is somebody observing the pattern almost
1015 Km away; you are able to observe something and you are able to identify
the force of gravity where light can be sucked into the system. And second Nobel
prize which was gone on chemistry is for decoding the genetic composition and
genes itself by a tool called CRISPR. Now these two Nobel prizes give me the
idea of prospective which means you can go and look at the aerial view of the
problem and then you are looking for micro details like gene and average 258
million sub genes out of it and then you can able to edit those genes that is a
detailing part of it. So how do you build a perspective and how do you build
your expertise so in next 10 years of your career, next 20 years of your career.
You need to see how are you able to increase your perspective and expertise
and once you have a good expertise and perspective then your design strength
and design capability will be a phenomenal difference which can drive last 2%
of 200%.
I typically observe the students coming out from college and college has given a
beautiful content knowledge of the systems, of subjects, of various natures and
these subjects give you the good content. Now you need to connect this
knowledge with a problem solving for some customers, some particular issues
that customer may be facing and there you need to solve the problem, you need
to contextualize. So, first is content, second is context, third is connect, and
fourth is communicate. Lot of time we found the students from the young
colleges, they over focus on technology more than their communication skills
because that’s the problem of the engineering colleges which I also faced when I
passed out. For seven years I’m fearful of talking in public on any of the idea
which I used to have, as in that particular weakness we get generated during the
engineering college because our focus on technology, engineering, science is so
high that our liberal arts skills sometime are not getting honed in the same
manner. And for that communication becomes big handicap for us. I think when
we are designing something new we have to sell that idea to 100s of people,
1000s of people, millions of people and for that communication is the backbone.
So I’ll say 4 Cs are equally important for you to tone up, content you need to
20
know, contextualize with a customer, connect with the problem solving and
then you’re looking to communicate in an effective manner. Like in a movie, the
way a good movie is getting created, the same way you need to have a great
communication skills going forward. The institute has given you very good
curriculum, I’ve seen the curriculum of Prof. Majhi who has prepared under the
guidance of Prof. Sadagoppan, who would’ve given a great direction for putting
this design spine as a curriculum. It is one of the best curriculum you’ve gone
through. So, you’ve all the elements of success in the field which you’re going to
choose.
Wherever you’re joining in; whichever career you’re choosing, I think the main
focus is on passion, the main focus is on integrity. What you promise you deliver
that; you need to respect everybody around you, respect means listening, listen
to everybody. Listen with the intensity; lot of time we don’t listen with the same
intensity as person wants to communicate and the fourth element is humility. So
the passion, humility, integrity and respect are the four traits which will make
you successful while going forward in your career.
With these four capabilities, you need to think big, dream big, put a dream of
2030 what you like to be, put a dream of 2030 visualize yourself what role will
you be playing in the industry, take out a white paper or a chart and try to draw
down a visualization piece and write it down this is 2030 vision. In 1985 I had
put my dream that I want to be a Chairmen of a public listed company. I never
had any resources in 1985. I was coming from a middle class family with 10
siblings, but the dream was, in 10 years, I want to be chairman of a public listed
company. I didn’t know, what the public listed company is there, but it gets
registered in your subconscious mind, and then, I started acting on it and my
dream got delayed by 4 years. Polaris went public in 1999, but the dream got
some shape.
Next thing is, you need some role model; role model gives you a compass. I had
role model of Walt Disney on one side and GRD Tata, on the other side which
drove me towards design, imagination and building an institution and that
driven my personal journey over the last now 35 years’ of journey.
I wish you all the best, for your new career, you will be embarking on and I’m
sure you will be successful in your life.
Thank you!
