It gives me immense pleasure and pride to present the
Annual Report of Guru Gobind Singh College for
Women, Chandigarh for the academic session 2018-19
to the distinguished audience present today.
On behalf of S Gurdev Singh IAS (Retd), President, Sikh
Educational Society; Col (Retd) Jasmer Singh Bala,
Secretary, Sikh Educational Society; other esteemed
members of the Management; dignitaries; faculty
members and students of this College, I extend a warm
welcome to our worthy Chief Guest Prof Sanjay
Kaushik, Dean College Development Council (DCDC).
Dr Sanjay Kaushik is a Professor in the University
School of Business, Panjab University Chandigarh. He
took charge of Dean College Development Council
(DCDC) in November, 2018. He has been given
additional charge of Honorary Director of ICSSR-North
Western Regional Centre (NWRC), Chandigarh from
January, 2017. Professor Kaushik has 28 years of
experience in teaching and research. Dr Kaushik's major
research interes t involves Human Resource
Management, General Management and Banking. He
has authored and co-authored several books under
National and International publications. He has
contributed many research papers to various National
and International Seminars, Conferences and
Workshops. He is a well recognised Reviewer for
reputed professional journals. He has gained various
recognitions from different Academic and Professional
Societies for his active association and distinguished
contributions in teaching and research.
I consider it my privilege to introduce our students to an
illustrious personality who has held several positions of
eminence and responsibility. Dr Kaushik, your presence

Guru Gobind Singh College for Women was
established in 1973 by the Sikh Educational Society to
empower young women with quality education to face
the changing world. The institution has been working
towards preparing students to lead a wholesome life,
by inculcating human qualities as well as the abilities
to emerge as smart, condent, strong, informed and
responsible citizens of the globalized world. Inspired
by the teachings of the Sikh gurus, the College has been
progressing steadfastly towards achieving its mission
of creating balanced minds wherein knowledge is
teamed with ethical thinking. Ranked as one of the pre-
eminent institutions of the region, the College is
located in the prime area of Sector 26, Chandigarh. The
spirit of the College comes alive in its motto, SHUBH
KARMAN TE KABHUN NA TARON, implying
'Never to stray from the path of righteousness.'
Catering to the all-round development of its students,
the College fosters in the young minds the spirit of
healthy nationalism, social responsibility, moral
uprightness, feelings of compassion and love, care for
environment, and above all a life of service and
sacrice as exemplied by Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

The College is privileged to be governed by a duly constituted and elected body, the Sikh Educational Society (SES), Chandigarh. Formed in 1937 in Lahore, with a vision to modernize the educational, cultural and social environment of the region, SES comprises of eminent bureaucrats, philanthropists, scholars, prominent educationists and administrators. Panth Rattan Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra Memorial Awards
The SES annually organizes Panth Rattan Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra Memorial Awards Function to pay homage to Jathedar G S Tohra, for his meritorious contribution to the cause of education and to inspire the coming generations from his outstanding egalitarian accomplishments as President, Sikh Educational Society from 1995 to his passing away in 2004. The theme of the Annual Lectures touch upon the prevailing scenario in the context of Jathedar Tohra's world view. Panth Rattan Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra Memorial Awards Function was held on May 08, 2018 in which the SES conferred the award to the eminent
Sikh scholar Sardar Nanak Singh Nishtar and Dr Kuldip Singh Dhir for their contribution in raising and running various educational, religious, charitable, social service initiatives. The award carried Rs 1 Lakh cash, scroll and robe of honor. Sardar Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Cabinet Minister, Govt. of Punjab was the Chief Guest of the event. Panth Rattan Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra Annual Lectures were delivered by Prof. J S Grewal, Padam Shri, Former V C Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and Dr Indu Banga, Emeritus Professor of History, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

The College organized 'Gurmat Sangeet Samagam' under the aegis of Sikh Educational Society on March 18, 2019 in Mata Ganga Auditorium to celebrate the 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The occasion was graced by Zinda Shaheed Singh Saheb Jathedar Sant Baba Nihal Singh Ji, Mukhi, MisalShaheedaTarna Dal, Harianvela Wale, who was the Chief Guest and Prof Pankaj Mala Sharma, Former Chairperson and Dean, Department of Music, Panjab University, Chandigarh as the Guest of Honour. S Gurdev Singh, President, S.E.S and Col. (Retd.) J S Bala, Secretary, S.E.S elevated the event with their
esteemed presence.The programme commenced with the singing of the College Shabad. Gurmat Sangeet performances were presented by the teams of JawaddiTaksal, Ludhiana; Akal Academy, Baru Sahib, H.P.; Namdhari Music Academy, Sri Bhaini Sahib, Ludhiana; Bhai Gurmeet Singh Ji, Harianvela Wale, Hoshiarpur and Bhai Bahulivleen Singh Ji, AkaliJatha, Amritsar. Stringed instruments like Taus, Sarangi, Dilruba, Rabab, Israj, Pakhawaj, Jodi, etc. were played on by the teams. The College campus echoed with the melodious recitals.

About the Principal
Dr Jatinder Kaur, the Principal, is a dynamic leader and
under her diligent administration the College is
constantly progressing towards providing quality
education to its students. She has been selected as
NAAC Accessor by National Assessment and
Accreditation Council in March 2019. As a Member of
NAAC Peer Team, she visited Radhabai Kale Mahila
Maha Vidyalaya at Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. Dr
Jatinder Kaur joined the College as Principal on March
15, 2018. She completed Post Doctorate Fellowship
on the theme 'Rural-Urban Disparities in Financial
Inclusion in India: A District Level Study' sponsored by
ICSSR, New Delhi in 2017. Apart from this, she has an
M Com, M Phil, PhD, and PG Diploma in Financial
Management to her credit. Her area of specialization is
Banking and Finance. Dr Jatinder Kaur had joined the
College in 1991 as Assistant Professor in the Dept of
Commerce. She has served as Head, Dept of
Commerce from 2013 to March 2018. She has been Ex-
ofcio member of SES, the Governing Body of the
College from 2012-2015.
Having published more than thirty papers in Journals
of repute and Conference proceedings, shehas three
decades of signicant academic and research
experience behind her. She has also worked on UGC
Research Project on 'Exploring Quality Gaps in Higher
Education Institutions: A viewpoint of Undergraduates
of Chandigarh, Mohali & Panchkula.' During her
teaching tenure in the College, Dr Jatinder Kaur has
been Institutional Coordinator, RUSA, Convener,
Research Cell, Placement Cell and Grievance
Redressal Cell, Coordinator UGC Cell, Add-on
Courses, she has successfully organized six National
Seminars. Madam has published seven text books and
edited three books. Dr Jatinder Kaur has been awarded
SHIKSHA RATTAN PURSKAR by Ind ia
International Friendship Society(IIFS) New Delhi, for
outstanding service, achievements and contributions in
the eld of education.

Afliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh, the
College offers Graduate and Post-Graduate
courses in Arts, Commerce, Computer Science
and Applications and Science. A total number of
2061 of students were enrolled in the current
session in different programmes of study.
Academic Courses
The 11 acre of sprawling campus is replete with an
expanse of infrastructure which includes all the
latest facilities, well-equipped labs, smart class
rooms, air-conditioned well-stocked library,
Research Centre, Mata Kheevi Hostel, Seminar
Room, Mata Ganga Auditorium, Mata Gujri
Fitness Centre, Student's Centre, expansive
grounds, etc. Laboratories in Physics and
Chemistry Departments boast of latest equipment
and resources. The College ensures that learning
resources are made available to the students to
develop their prociency in academics. Advanced
learners are provided with extra reference books/
material by the teachers who set suitable goals
before them so that the students feel adequately
challenged. The Students' Centre is housed with
Stationery Shop, Photostat Facility, and Student
Council Ofce. Also located in the College is a
fully functional SBI Branch exclusively for the
benet of students and College employees.
Lending a panoramic view, the landscape garden
set near the main building with smooth lawns and
beds of perennials augment the beauty of the
campus. Providing the right ambience for the
young scholars to bloom in the perfect
environment, this is the second best maintained
College campus in Chandigarh.
Infrastructure
The College library has a spacious double storey-
building with modern infrastructure. Ms Sukhdeep
Kaur, librarian and the library staff, contribute
exceptionally towards functioning of the library.
The College library has a Blog (ggscwlibrary
.blogspot.in), a digital space for students to access the
previous question papers, pages/ links to highlight
various activities and achievements of the Staff and
students, Newspapers clippings, latest Panjab
University Syllabus, links to e-journals and e-books.
The Library provides an Open Access system, making
it an ideal place for the users to expand and widen their
knowledge. Well stocked with more than 24000 books
and 490 CDs on different subjects, the collection is
enriched with reference books, coffee table books,
light reading books like ction, self-help, biographies
of eminent personalities, etc. A total of 38 Magazines,
Periodicals and Journals as well as 19 Newspapers are
also subscribed by the library on annual basis. Library
homes a 'Book Bank' that consists of nearly 1600
books on different subjects which are lent out for the
full session to the needy as well as the meritorious
students. To display the fresh arrivals, there is a
Display Stand in the Library and an LED for
highlighting the services of the library along with the
new arrivals.
Library is fully automated with LibSys Software and is
provided with OPAC (Online Public Access
Catalogue) facility, through which users can search
their required documents. A striking feature of the
library is Learning Resource Centre, on the rst floor,
where students have added facilities for their research
oriented activities. Ten computers have been installed
in this section with internet facility. The College
subscribes to e-Journals under the scheme of N-LIST
Programme of INFLIBNET, UGC. There are separate
Reading Room for students to read their personal
documents/ books. As members of the Chandigarh
Librarian's Consortium and Panjab University Book
Club, the College avails the benet of accessing latest
Publications of the Universities.
Library
Gyankosh: An Interdisciplinary Journal is an open access annual
publication of Guru Gobind Singh College for Women. The
Journal aims to offer an academic and intellectual platform that
focuses on high quality research articles/papers including
insightful empirical studies, conceptual research and theoretical
articles in the disciplines of Science, Computer Science, Arts,
Commerce and Languages. It endeavors to critically reflect on the
changing contours of social, cultural, economic, scientic,
technological and political processes that shape our understanding
of the past and the contemporary world.
Dr Surinder Kaur is the Editor, Dr Bhajan Singh and Dr Rohini
Arora are the Co-Editors of Gyankosh.
The College takes pride that the rst volume of Gyankosh has

College Hostel
The students of the College are constantly motivated
for attaining excellence in the University examinations
through various incentive schemes such as
scholarships, fee concessions, Roll of honour and
prizes. To stir and motivate the weaker students, the
College provides remedial classes. Students from
socially and economically weaker sections are given
nancial aid, which subsequently leads to their
academic growth. The College grants various
scholarships to the students on need-cum-meritbasis.
Scholarships are received from other sources as well,
such as Directorate of Higher Education, UT
Chandigarh, Sita Ram Jindal Foundation, New Delhi,
College Development Council, Panjab University,
Chandigarh, Directorate of Social Welfare, Jammu&
Kashmir, Directorate of Social Welfare, Manipur, Life
Insurance of India Scholarship and Labour Dept,
Punjab, Ministry of Labour, Govt of India, Ministry of
Railways, Govt of India. During the last session, the
College received an amount of almost Rs 5,00,000
from above mentioned sources. The College also
granted scholarship worth Rs 1,41,500 to the students
on need-cum-merit basis to ensure equal opportunities
to all sections of students. Several philanthropists also
contributed around Rs 82,400 towards the education of
the economically weak students through the College
machinery. A Special Award of an amount of Rs 25,000
has been instituted by the family of Mrs RK Shergill
(Founder Principal) to be given to a meritorious and
needy student in recognition of all round excellence for
the academic session.
Scholarships and Concessions
The College has a well-equipped Hostel offering
accommodation to 350 residents and catering to four
SES institutions. There is a Gurudwara Sahib within
the Hostel premises, which offers sanctum to students.
Periodic renovation of the Hostel is undertaken to
ensure good comfort and hygiene levels to the
residents. Facilities like laundry, Common Room,
Visitors' Room and LCDs are provided.

The College received grant under the RUSA scheme
from Department of Higher Education, Chandigarh for
utilisation under the heads of New Construction,
Renovation, Upgradation of existing infrastructure and
purchase of equipment. Plans were formulated and
executed by Institutional Coordinator and Nodal
Ofcers along with the RUSA team which worked for
the smooth and effective utilisation of the funds. As
envisaged in the RUSA guidelines, the Departments of
Music, Chemistry, Fine Arts, Commerce, Home
Science, History, Physics and Computer Science were
augmented with learning resources. Fixtures including
projectors and other equipment required for the Smart
Classroom environment were installed.
The College has constructed a Multi Functional
Sports Ground with the aim to provide best of
facilities to the sports students for various games. To
sensitise students towards the environment, LED tube
lights, bulbs and fans under PM's Ujala scheme have
been put up in the campus. A Compost Pit has also
been prepared to encourage the re-cycling of the waste
in the campus. To facilitate the physical well-being of
the students and the staff, a gym with latest amenities
has been set up under the RUSA scheme. Other works
carried out under the RUSA scheme include
fabrication and xing of grills over boundary wall,
purchase of furniture, water coolers, online UPS and 11
printer-cum-scanners.
Various capacity building workshops were organised
under the aegis of RUSA, by the department of
English, Commerce, Hindi, Economics, Computer
Science, Library and faculty of Science, to enhance
knowledge of the faculty and equip students with latest
in the eld.
The College is working towards optimal utilisation of
the next phase of RUSA grant in consultation with the
Management and Department of Higher Education
Chandigarh.
Rashtriya Uchchtar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA)
Academic Achievement 2017-18
The College ensures that the academic skills of
students are honed and special efforts are made to
bring the less privileged and slow learners at par
with the class. The Faculty pays special and special
attention to each student and remedial classes are
held regularly. Rehiana, MA I Sociology secured
8th University Position in Panjab University

109 trainees were divided into two companies and she
was appointed as the Company Commander of one of
the company which also won the overall champion
trophy at the conclusion of the course. The Passing out
Parade ceremony was held on November 17, 2018.

August 2018 from Punjabi University, Patiala. The title of her thesis was Echoes From the East:
Reconfigurations of Myth and Folklore in the Selected Works of Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. It was a
research project which examined and elucidated on pervasive incorporation of myth and folklore in the
selected ctional works of Indian American author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni.

The Baghwani Club, under the guidance of Ms
Harpreet Kaur, Ms Harbinder Chahal, Dr Aradhna,
Head, along with a team of dedicated gardeners has
been looking after the upkeep and beautication of
green spaces and landscape of the College campus
which is one of the best healthy practices and
sustainable initiatives adopted by the institution. The
huge and exquisite variety of flowers, trees and shrubs,
not only add beauty to the environs but also provides
serene pollution free atmosphere to the young scholars
to bloom and nurture their minds. The consistent and
dedicated hard work by the Club has brought laurels by
winning the Second prize at the Annual Rose Festival
2019 in the category of 'Best Maintained Campus' in
Chandigarh. The College campus is a sight to behold
when the flowers are in their full bloom.

The Departments of the College remained busy
planning and executing activities, seminars,
workshops, guest and expert lectures throughout the
year for the benet of staff and students. This year
National Seminars were organised by the Department
of English, Sociology & Economics with the
participation of distinguished researchers, faculty and
guests from the academic fraternity of the country.
Inter-College Festivals were organised by the
Department of Computer Science and Applications,
Commerce and Science.
Post Graduate Department of English offers MA
English, BA English, Honors, as well as Elective and
Functional English at the Under Graduate level.
A National Seminar sponsored by NAAC on
Catering to the Global Learner: Quality
Enhancement in Higher Education was organised by
the Department in Collaboration with IQAC on
November 22, 2018.
The key note address was delivered by Professor
Tankeshwar Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Guru
Jambeshwar University, Hisar, the Inaugural Address
was delivered by Professor Vijay Kumar Shrotryia,
Department of Commerce, Delhi School of
Economics, University of Delhi and a Special Address
was delivered by Professor Paramjit Kaur Tulsi,
Department of Education, National Institute of
Technical Teachers Training and Research,
Chandigarh. The occasion was graced by Er. S. S.
Virdi, Chief Engineer (Retd.) and Col. (Retd.) Jasmer
Singh Bala, Secretary, Sikh Educational Society.
Various papers on the quality enhancement of higher
education were presented. A Panel Discussion was held
on Best Practices in Higher Education Institutes.

library for research. Ms Sukhdeep Kaur intimated the
students about different sections in the library : Journal
section, reference section and also the library blog.

in the tricity.
Student of MA II, Shruti Rana participated in

Post Graduate Department of Commerce organised
BIZ BASH 2019 on February 22, 2019. More than 300
students from 18 colleges and universities in and
around Chandigarh participated in the Fest. The event
started with 2 minutes mourning and lamp lighting in
remembrance of Pulwama Martyrs. Students
participated with full rigour and zeal in various events
like Business plan, Just a Minute, Ad Mad show, Skit,
Group Dance etc. The auditorium resonated with
‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ and ‘Vande Matram’.
Big MJ Guri from 92.7 Big FM was special attraction
of the event.
The Department organised a One-day Capacity
Building Workshop on Creative Strategies in Digital
Marketing and Management under the aegis of
RUSA on February 12, 2019. A renowned subject
expert of marketing, Dr Satinder Kumar, Assistant
Professor, School of Management Studies, Punjabi
University, Patiala, conducted the workshop to
acquaint the participants with the creative and
contemporary strategies and practical applications in
the eld of Digital Marketing and Management .

Odessey an event organised by PGGCG 11 its yearly
Fest on November 15, 2018. Students participated in
business quiz, ad mad show, just a minute, rangoli

Chaturvedi from B Com II secured second prize in
Mehandi competition.
Students participated in Resonance a fest organised by
PGGC-11 on February 21, 2019, in various events.
Sheetal and Shikha of B Com I secured rst prize in
Rangoli competition.
B ComII student, Shiwani Chaturvedi won rst prize in
mehandi competition at Pratibha Fest organised by
Gyan Jyoti Institute of Management.
The College Group Dance Team stood Third.
Harpreet Kaur and Arzoo Gupta from B Com II won
second prize in Guess the Punch line whereas
students Suruchi and Rytham of B Com II won second
prize in quiz competition.
Biz Czar Fest organised by GGDSD College also
witnessed participation by our students with zeal in
various events. A team of students from B Com II won
third prize in a competition 'beg borrow steal.' The
student of the department added glory to the college by

The Department celebrated Entrepreneurship
Awareness Week 2019 (February 25 - March 5, 2019)
on February 27, 2019 in collaboration with National
Institute of Technical Teachers' Training and Research
(NITTTR), Chandigarh and Regain Our Glory
Foundation. Guest of Honour of the event was Smt.
Himja Rana, founder of Bossladies. Dr Sanjay
Kaushik, Professor, University Business School,
Panjab University, Chandigarh was the Chief Guest.
Keynote Speaker was Sh Arun Chetak, Vice President
Deltron, a division of Continental Device India Ltd.
A talk on Banking Industry in India and its
Scope was organised by OBEROI Educational Trust
on January 25, 2019 for the students of Commerce. Mr.
Gurpreet Singh, retired Vice President from HDFC
Bank addressed the students. The session focused on
key emerging issues; topics, exposing students to the
unfolding banking environment and providing real
world perspective to aspiring bankers.
A quiz was organised by Humanity Olympiad,
Chandigarh on August 25, 2018. Students of B Com I,
II, III and M Com I and II participated. Anmol Sharma
of B Com I and Manroop Kaur of B Com III won the
competition.
The Department of commerce organised a
scholarship test conducted by 'Bulls Eye' worth Rs
1,00,000 for training in MBA-CAT, Banking, SSC,
govt jobs and campus placement on September 19,
2018 for the students of B Com II and III.
The Department of commerce organised
Management games and Business Quiz session for the
students of B Com II for development of skills and to
acquire knowledge in the area of commerce and
management on November 02, 2018 by 'Real Pro
Management and Skill School, Chandigarh'.
A Workshop-Cum-Interactive Session was
organised by Career Launcher for the students of
Commerce Department on February 07, 2019.
30 students participated in the Inter-Class
Competition 'Guess the Punch Line' competition
organised on January 19, 2019. Ridham and Suruchi
Kaushal of B Com III were adjudged the winners of the
competition.
Various Inter Class competitions were held by
Commerce and Business Club of the Department.
Essay writing competition on 'McDonald' was
organised on February 02, 2019 for the students of
Commerce and Business Club. Kirti B Com III year
was declared as winner.
Just a Minute competition was organised on
February 16, 2019. The topics were related to
commerce and management like RBI, marketing mix,
e- banking, leadership, digital marketing and many
more. Suruchi of B Com III was declared as winner.

March 8, 2019. The Broader rationale behind this
seminar was to explore the multiple factors which
shape the kinds of transnational communities which
rise from the strong, interpersonal networks. Fullling
the objective the seminar was a great success with the
participation of more than 200 delegates, especially the
contribution of eminent speakers like Prof Sucha Singh
Gill, Prof Manjit Singh, Dr Santosh Kumar Singh aptly
justied the theme of the seminar. Students of MA
Sociology also presented their papers in this seminar.
The students of PG Dept of Sociology participated in:

India held on December 21, 2018 sponsored by
National Commission for Women, New Delhi,
organized by Gender Champions' Club of the College.

Library Orientation Students of MA Sociology

National Eating Disorder Awareness day.

The Department celebrated Hindi Divas on September
14, 2018. Poem recitation contest on 'Stri Vimarsh' was
organised. 36 students participated in this competition.

second prize and Dipti of BA II year bagged the third
prize.
A Capacity Building Workshop sponsored by
RUSA was organised on February 23, 2019. The topic
of workshop was Information Technology and ofcial
language Hindi.157 participants from various colleges
from Chandigarh participated in this event. Dr Lokesh

Department of Music (Instrumental) provides
curricular and co-curricular experiences to students
and promotes study and performance of instrumental
music. Performing opportunities are given to students
of the department who enjoy playing different
instruments such as Sitar, Santoor, Synthesizer,
Xylophone, Dilruba, Tabla Tarang, Mandolin, Ghara
by participating in various items at Zonal and Inter
Zonal Youth Festivals apart from classroom teaching.

Ashmita, Deepika of BA II along with Darsift and
Heena of BA I, participated in Folk Orchestra Event
at Panjab University Zonal Youth & Heritage Festival
held at Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector

performance was highly appreciated.

A stall was put up by the students of BA III on
October31, 2018 during the IT Fest organised by the
Department of Computer Science and Applications of
the college. Various eatables and baked goods were
prepared by the students and sold.
Students of the department were taken to
Kalagram, Manimajara on November 15, 2018 to visit
10 th Chandigarh National Crafts Mela. The
students got an opportunity to see various handicrafts
of our country and also observed craftsmen at work.
Swasth Bharat Yatra-Eat Right India
Movement was organised by the Director, Health and
Family Welfare. The nutrition workshop was attended
by our students on December 27, 2018 at IMA
Complex Sector 35 Chandigarh. The workshop aimed
to educate students so that they can reach the
vulnerable sections of the society to spread the
message of importance of nutrition in preventing the
spread of communicable diseases.
Student of Department put up an exhibition-cum-
sale of tie and dye dupattas prepared by them in Biz
Bash organised by PG Department of Commerce on
February 22, 2019. Students of BA III year cooked lip-
smackingsnacks for sale in the food stall.
Students were taken to Home Science Fest held on
March 08, 2019 to participate in various competitions
and visit the exhibition put up by the students of
Government Home Science College, Sector 10,
Chandigarh.
Department of History
The History Society of Guru Gobind Singh College for
Women, Sector 26, organised a Declamation Contest
on Historical Milestones in India's Struggle for
Freedom on August 13, 2018. In this declamation, 17
papers were presented and more than 50 students
attended the event.
Shalu Chokkar of BA III and Dixita Attri of BSc I,
participated for competitive exam (subjective) on the
'Autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi's My
Experiment with Truth, at Panjab University,
Chandigarh on September 26, 2018.
Three documentary movies on the Martyrdom
of Guru Arjan Dev ji, Martyrdom of Guru Teg
Bahadur ji and Maharaja Ranjit Singh respectively
were screened for the students.
Inter Class Paper Presentation Competition
was organised on the topic of Changing Position of
Women in History on February 06, 2019.
Post Graduate Department of Computer Science
and Applications strives for excellence in applying,
and imparting knowledge in the eld of computer
science by organising Seminars/Workshops to prepare
students for dynamic industry environment. The
department recognises the need for preparing students
for future.
In the session 2018-19 many interactive sessions were
held to expose the students to the upcoming demands
and requirements of the industry.
The Department organized IT Fiesta 2018
(sponsored by Department of Science and Technology)
in association with other companies on October 31,
2018 to provide a platform to students of various
colleges of the region to explore their true potential and
showcase their talent and skills. Variety of
competitions like On the Spot Software Development,
On the Spot Software Debugging, On the Spot Website
Designing, Power Point Presentation, Cartooning,
Collage Making, e-waste Modeling, Face Painting,
Rangoli, Debate, Group Dance, Skit, Caption Contest
etc were organised. This fest was an effort by the
Department to narrow down the gap between industry
and students and to also encourage students for best
event management activities. To felicitate the alumnus
of this prestigious institution, the department invited
15 Alumni of the college to judges various events. 17
colleges from in and around the city participated in the
Fest.
The Department organised an Alumni Meet on
January 19, 2019 in which alumni, passing year
students of M Sc and BCA and all the teaching and
non-teaching staff of the Department gathered to relive
the memories of the beautiful time spent together.
An Expert Lecture Emerging Trends and
Technologies-Learn To Be a Winner was delivered
by Mr Rajiv Nayyar, an expert from A&H Software
Solutions on February 20, 2019. The students were
made aware about trending technologies in software
industry.
The Department also organised a One day
Capacity Building Workshop titled Hands-on
workshop on Python Programming under the aegis
of RUSA was organised by Webtech Learning on
March 26, 2019.

An Expert talk on 'Recording the Choreography of
Molecules and Clusters by Shedding Light on
them' was organised by Department of Science on
September 28, 2018 by Dr Arijit Kumar De, Assistant
Professor, Department of Chemical Sciences, IISER
Mohali, Sector 81, Mohali. It helped the students to
gain knowledge about optics, laser and light matter
interaction. Career opportunities in Science in various
premier institutes like IISER, IIT, NIT were discussed.

One Day Capacity Building Workshop was
organised on the occasion of Science day by the
Department on Space Science and Technology under
the aegis of RUSA on February28, 2019. Dr Sandeep
Sahijpal, Professor, Department of Physics, Panjab
University, Chandigarh. The main aim of the
workshop was to apprise the participants about the
basic concepts and recent developments in Space
Science and India's contribution in this eld. Dr
Sahijpal guided the students regarding various career
options in Astrophysics and Astronomy. Dr Ashok
Kumar, Professor, Department of Physics, Panjab
University, was the resource person for the 2nd session
of the workshop.

From our college six students participated in North
Zone Cricket Tournament held at Rohtak and team

Panjab University Zonal Youth and Heritage Festival
(Zone B), was held at Dev Samaj College for Women,
Chandigarh, from October 3-6, 2018. Students of the

The College organised 'Cultural Pluralism - National
Strength' during the Cultural Fest 2019 under the aegis
of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Chandigarh
Administration at Tagore Theatre, Sector 18,
Chandigarh on March 30, 2019.
The occasion was graced by Ms Nazuk Kumar, IAS,
SDM Central as the Honourable Chief Guest. The
programme was organised under the patronage of the
Principal, Dr Jatinder Kaur and co-ordinated by Mrs.
Meenu Sharma and Dr Reena Parti. The event
commenced with the College Shabad after which the
students presented plethora of cultural items which
included: One-act play 'GulBano', Mimicry,
Histrionics, Bhaand, Folk Orchestra, Skit, Manipuri
Folk Dance and Mime. The students participated with
immense zeal and vigour. The cultural bonanza
presented by the student was well-received and
appreciated by the audience. This event showcased the
rich student diversity and cultural pluralism inherent in
our institution which is the symbol of national
strength.
Cultural Fest
NSS
NSS wing of the college has two NSS units comprising
of 100 volunteers each. NSS Program Ofcers for both
the units are Dr Savneet Kaur, and Ms Madhur, During
the session 2018-19 following activities were
undertaken by the NSS volunteers.
Yoga Day Celebrations: International Day of Yoga
was celebrated on June 24, 2018 in the college to
emphasize on the importance of tness and good
health. Students participated with zeal and enthusiasm
as they were told that yoga helps in keeping mind and
body healthy.
Swachchta Pakhwara
Swachchta Pakhwara 2018-19 started on August 01,
2018 in the college with a talk on cleanliness and
personal hygiene by Dr Savneet Kaur, Psychologist.
NSS volunteers and College students participated in
the talk which focused on hand washing technique.The
lecture was followed by Swachchta Oath.
Fire Safety Campaign
NSS volunteers were trained to become re angels
after which they participated in re safety campaign
organised by Fire Angels India, a project of the NGO
WHAM. Volunteers went for door to door
campaigning on August 08, 2018 and explained re
safety measures to the residents in Sector 27,
Chandigarh.
Relief Material For Kerala Flood Victims
A fund raiser was organized on August 23, 18 for the
collection of necessary items for the victims of the
Kerala floods. Students and faculty members made
generous donations towards the relief effort. The relief
material was sent on August 25, 2018.
Who Hand Washing At Kishangarh
NSS volunteers conducted a session on cleanliness and
personal hygiene at Government Middle School,
Kishangarh on September 15, 2018. Volunteers taught
the school students the ve steps of WHO hand
washing technique.
Dengue Awareness Drive
One week Dengue awareness drive was carried out by
the NSS volunteers from September 15, 2018 to
September 22, 2018 in the adopted village,
Kishangarh. They checked the stagnant water for
dengue larvae. Volunteers educated the people to break
the mosquito life cycle by destroying the possible
mosquito breeding sites such as concrete pools, water
tanks, and drainages as well as coolers and disposable
tires.
NSS Day Celebrations
NSS Day was celebrated in the College on September
24, 2018. volunteers were informed about the role of
NSS in grooming personality by the Program Ofcers.
Poster making and slogan writing competitions were
held on the following themes: 'Safety of Women' and
'Save Girl Child'.
Poshan Maah
'Poshan Maah' was celebrated on September 28, 2018
by conducting a lecture on nutrition and diet by
nutritionist Ms Jasneet Malhi. Volunteers conducted a
survey at the adopted village, Kishangarh and spread
awareness about the nutritional requirements for
expecting and lactating mothers.
'Swachchta Hi Sewa' Campaign
NSS volunteers celebrated 'Swachchta hi Sewa'
campaign on September 29, 2018 by taking out a rally
in and around the College campus stressing on keeping
our environment clean. Volunteers also presented
Nukkad Natak in the campus highlighting the
importance of cleanliness.
Diwali Exhibition
Annual Diwali Exhibition was put up in the campus on
November 06, 2018. An exhibition is put up by NSS
volunteers every year before Diwali where they sell the
candles and diyas made bythe visually impaired
students of Institute for Blind. Students and faculty
members generously contribute towards the noble
cause by purchasing all the items. Sale proceeds are
also utilized to gift diwali goodies to under privileged
children.
Race Against Drugs
15 NSS volunteers of the College participated in 'Race
against Drugs' organised by the Kalgidhar Trust, Akal
Acedamy, Baru Sahib. The run was flagged off by 103
years old Bibi Maan Kaur, world's oldest sprinter at
Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh on November 11, 2018.
Nature Camp
50 NSS volunteers visited Nagar Van on 18th February,
2019. The Nature Camp was an initiative of the
Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of
India in collaboration with YUVSATTA (NGO) at City
Forest, behind Sukhna Lake for promoting knowledge
of rich flora and fauna of the region and general
environmental awareness among students and
Program Ofcers.
Drug Free India Campaign
16 NSS volunteers took part in “Drug free India”
Campaign by the Art of Living Foundation on February
18, 2019 at Chandigarh University, Greater Mohali,
Punjab. The launch event was graced by Sri Sri Ravi
Shankar along with celebrities like Sanjay Dutt, Kalip
Sharma and Badshah. The event saw participation by a
million youth from various universities across the
country via LIVE webcam.
Tree Plantation
NSS volunteers planted trees in 'Smriti Garden' at City
Forest, Chandigarh on February 18,2018 to pay tribute
to the CRPF Jawans martyred on February 14, 2019 in
Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. The event also saw
presence of Debendra Dalai, Director, Department of
Environment and Abdul Qayum, Deputy Conservator
of Forests, Chandigarh Administration.
Assesability Audit For Disabled
16 NSS volunteers attended training program to
conduct audit for making Chandigarh rst disabled
friendly city and bring it on world map. The training
program was an initiative of GRIID in collaboration

Government Medical College and Auditorium, Sector
32, Chandigarh on February 20, 2019. The volunteers
conducted the audit at Behlana, Hallomajra, Bair Majra
and Karsan from February 22, 2019 to February 28,
2019.
Talk On Peace
NSS volunteers went for an interactive session on
peace at Peoples Convention Centre, Sector 36B,
Chandigarh on March 02, 2019. The talk was an
initiative of FOSWAC (Federation of SectorWelfare
Association of Chandigarh) and Yuvsatta (youth for
peace).
International Women's Day
NSS volunteers presented a Nukkad Natak on 'Educate
Girl Child' at the adopted village Kishangarh on the
occasion of International Women's Day on March 08,
2019. The skit emphasized on the education of girls as
it helps them to become smarter, independent, learn
new things and to face the world with condence.
Youth Outreach Activity
NSS wing organised a youth outreach activity in the
college campus on how food choices impact the
environment, public health and animals. The activity
was an initiative of Vegan Outreach, an International
non-prot organization which provides free education
and printed materials on issues related to environment,
public health and animal protection in India. They
bought virtual reality headsets with which one can
experience the 360-degree technology in order to
provide education to the college students.
NSS SPECIAL CAMP was organised by the College
on the theme of Women Empowerment and
Relationship Building from December 22-28, 2018. A
total of 70 students participated in the camp. There was
a yoga session by college alumni Ms Amit A seven-day
yoga camp was also held during the camp. Various
committees namely discipline, hospitality, decoration,
cleanliness, cultural were formed for the smooth
functioning of various activities during the camp.
Volunteers collected toys as donation from the
residents of nearby locality to be distributed to poor
children as part of 'share a toy' activity for Christmas. A
langar sewa was held at Government Multispeciality
Hospital, Sector– 16, Chandigarh as part of 'Parnaam
Shaheedan nu' activity to acknowledge the sacrice of
sahibzaade of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
A flash mob was organized at Plaza, sector – 17,
Chandigarh to highlight 'unity in cultural diversity' in
the evening where volunteers presented various dance
forms like Kathak, Bhangra, Haryanvi, Bengali,
Rajasthani, Himachali and Manipuri representing
varied cultures in India.
NSS volunteers visited Aashiana- an orphanage and
adoption center in Sector 15, Chandigarh. Volunteers
celebrated Christmas by playing games with the
children and distributed goodies to them. A lecture on
Character Building was conducted by Prof Bikram
Rana, SLO, NSS in the afternoon where he emphasized
on working for the betterment of the society which will
in turn help in enhancing their personal growth.
Volunteers participated in Swasth Bharat Yatra
organised by Chandigarh Administration at Sukhna
lake. The yatra was held to promote Eat Right India
Movement which was flagged off by Shri VP Singh
Badnore, Governor Punjab. Students were holding
placards and raising slogans regarding healthy and safe
eating.
Another lecture on Leadership through NSS was held
in the campus by Dr Manoj Kumar Bhambu,
Motivational Speaker and Associate Professor,
GCCBA Sector – 50, Chandigarh.
An informative lecture on Breast Cancer Awareness
was conducted by Dr Harnoor Singh Virdi, Breast
Radiologist from USA and Dr Shilpa Virdi,
Gynecologist from USA, which concluded the Camp.
Participation In State And National Level Camps
NSS volunteer Muskan of B Com III went for ten days
State Adventure Camp held at' Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports' at
Manali and Salong Valley, Himachal Pradesh, from
June 26, 2018 to July 7, 2018.
NSS volunteers Ritika of B Com II and Divya Rai of

held at 'Regional Water Sports Training Centre' at Pong
Dam, Himachal Pradesh, from September 12-21,
2018.
NSS volunteer Muskan of B Com III went for a week
long National Integration Camp at 'District Institute of
Education and Training' at Mandi, Himachal Pradesh,
from February 12-18, 2019.
NCC (National Cadet Corps)- Army Wing
The NCC Army wing aims to motivate the girl cadets
of our college to take up career in armed forces. The
wing is being looked after by Lt Ritu Dhanoa,
Department of Commerce. The vibrant and Dynamic
NCC Army wing of the College is continuously scaling
new heights. A total of 56 new cadets (from rst year)
enrolled themselves for the same in session 2018-19.
The wing at present has 99 cadets. During the session,
cadets actively participated in various camps and
regular activities for social cause:
CAMPS:
Cadet Shalini Barthwal participated actively in
Advance Leadership Camp (from September 7-18,
2018) and won Gold medal in cultural performance.
She also attended Pre- Thal Sainik Camp - I (from
July 28 – August 6, 2018)
Cadet Pallavi Bisht and Cadet Alisha performed
outstanding in National Integration Camp (from
June 4-15, 2018) in which cadet Pallavi Bisht won gold
medal in Tug of War, gold medal as a group leader and
silver medal in drill competition.
22 cadets of the College Army Wing participated in
Annual Training Camp, from November 2-11, 2018)
and won rst prize in group song and dance
competition.
Cadets, Pallavi Bisht and Shalini Bhardwaj were
selected for cultural performance at D- CAT at Ropar
(from November 14-22, 2018) where our directorate
won third prize in Bhangra, group singing and ballet
dance.
7 cadets – Simran, Akashdeep, Pallavi, Jyoti, Priya,
Ankita and Dharma attended Annual Training camp
from January 3-12, 2019 and won second prize in
Volleyball and First prize in Kho- Kho.
ACTIVITIES:
Before the enrolment of the cadets was done for the
session 2018-19, an orientation lecture was conducted
on August 8, 2018, in which the commanding ofcer,
Col. VK Sheoran addressed the students and gave all
necessary information regarding NCC and its benets.
15 cadets participated in Yoga day celebrations held at
on June 21, 2018.
9 cadets also participated in the 'Anti-Drug Rally'
organised by the unit in the month of June.
On July 27, 2018 College organised a rally on 'Digital
India' in which 41 cadets participated. Rally aimed to
sensitize citizens towards being digitally active.
The cadets actively participated in 'Swachh Bharat'
Rallies organised. Around 50 cadets participated in
Swachhta Hi Sewa campaign from September 15-
October, 22, 2018 for which the wing was also
awarded with a trophy for enthusiastic participation.

Campaign held at Chandigarh University on February,
18, 2019.
Three cadets – Pallvi Bisht, Ritika Panwar and Ishita
Maish donated blood in the Blood Donation Camp
organised by NCC Unit on November 26, 2018. Our
cadet Pallavi Bisht was appreciated for the same by the
Governor, Sh VP Singh Badnore, with a badge of
'Raktdaata'.
8 cadets participated in Cyclothon organised by
Military Literature Festival society on November 18,
2018 held at Sukhana Lake, Chandigarh. 8 cadets also
participated in 'Samavesh', a cyclothon organised by
NCC wing of Panjab University in the month of March,
where they won gold medal for the same.
Cadet Pallavi Bisht has been awarded with a cash prize
of 4000/- for winning a medal at National Integration
Camp. Performance Audit of the wing was also
conducted on December21, 2018 by the ofcials from
the NCC Chandigarh unit.
NCC NAVY WING
With the motto of Unity & Discipline, Sub/Lt (Dr)
Amneet Kaur has been the propeller in channelizing
the set objectives of NCC among cadets. NCC
enrolment for the session 2018-19 started with the One
Week Induction Programme in the College
premises. This year 7 students were enrolled in the
NCC Navy Wing. The college has always motivated
girl cadets to undergo adventure training, youth
activities and social services and enable them to
blossom in the true sense towards the holistic
development of their personality. It is a matter of pride
that cadets continue to show their courage at the
various state and national level camps.
We are the rst one in the directorate to get the
institutional performance audit done.
Working towards the aim of NCC, to provide a suitable
environment to motivate the youth to take up a career in
the armed forces, 8 cadets were awarded Ranks for
their dedicated hardwork.
NCC Cadets also participated in social service
activities. It is a matter of pride Cadet Pooja was
awarded best performer trophy in Swachchta Hi Sewa
Campaign.

Written Quiz on 'Legal Rights of Women'
sponsored By NCW (New Delhi)
Gender Champions' Club of the College organized a
Written Quiz under the aegis of National Commission
for Women (NCW), New Delhi on December 22,
2018.The theme of the quiz was 'Legal Rights of
Women in India'. It was based on the guidelines
provided by the NCW to create awareness among the
college student community about legal rights of
women. About 106 students participated in this event.
The cash prizes were given to the following winners :

AWARENESS WORKSHOP was organised on March
05, 2019. A short documentary was screened for the
students followed by an interactive session by Dr
Nishpal Kaur, a Gynecology Specialist. She informed
the students about the female reproductive system,
menstruation, and proper menstrual hygiene. The
purpose of the workshop was to sensitize students on
various complications arising out of lack of menstrual
hygiene. Dr Manipal Kaur, Nodal Ofcer motivated
the students to work towards confronting the stigma
associated with menstruation. Dr Sarabjit Kaur,
executive member of the Club, discussed the theme of
the documentary and signicance of the concerned
issues. The students took pledge to spread awareness
about menstruation as normal biological process and a
key sign of reproductive health. Gender Champions
were given badges to become ambassadors to spread
this message of reproductive health.
Youth Welfare Society The ofce of Dean
Student's welfare functions, under the supervision of
Dr Surinder Kaur (DSW), and her team to support
students for their all-round development. The team
strives to look after the welfare of the students with
active support from the student's representatives,
faculty and College authorities. The main aim of
student welfare te am is to cater to the student's interest
and promotion of their overall well-being.Various
events and affairs were effectively handled under
DSW throughout the year.
Our team initiated the academic year activity by
organising a Freshers' Party for the new students
admitted to our college. It was organised on August 24,
2018. Students from various departments participated
in making the event a great success. Modeling was
done by the First-year students from all streams.
Ankita Trehan from M Com I was adjudged as Miss
Fresher, Jaslene Kaur from B Com I was selected as
First Runners up, Shivani was Second Runners up and
Sanskriti Chandel of BCA I was given the title of Miss
Elegant. The title for Miss Charming was given to Rita
from M Com I. Dr Jatinder Kaur crowned the winners.
Every year Panjab University Student Council
Elections are held in the University campus and its
Gender Champions' Club afliated colleges. The elections were conducted on
September 06, 2018. The following students were

An Oath Taking Ceremony for the elected Student
Council was organised on September 17, 2018, to
inculcate a sense of responsibility and belongingness
towards the college. Dr Jatinder Kaur decorated the
Council with badges.
In collaboration with Times of India, DSW organised
Clean and Clear Fresh Face 2018 on September 22,
2018. Parvesh of BA I was selected as the winner,
whereas Jasleen of B Com I and Nandini of B Com II
were selected as First and Second Runner up.
To mark the Vigilance Awareness Week, the college
organised various activities to spread awareness
against corruption and aids to eliminate it.
An Integrity Pledge Ceremony was held on
October 29, 2018 . All the staff members and the
Principal took the pledge to be committed to highest
standards of honesty and integrity at all times.
A slogan writing competition was also organised
on October 31, 2018 where 30 students participated
and the winners were selected.

Poster making was organised on October 31,
2018 and more than 50 students participated with full
enthusiasm.
An essay writing competition was also held on
November 01, 2018 where students wrote essay on the
given topic and the best essays were adjudged winners
by the appointed judges.

A rally was held on November 02, 2018 where
the teachers and students demonstrated protests
against corruption and slogans were raised. The
students wore black T shirts showing their protest
against corruption.
In collaboration with HONDA, to mark the Road
Safety Festomania, a selection round of the students
was undertaken to give trial of their driving and the
nalists participated in the nal round on November
19-24, 2018. The participating students from various
Colleges were also educated on the importance of
following trafc rules and abide by the rules and
regulations to ensure road safety.
Constitution Day was celebrated on November
26,2018 to embark the importance of the Constitution.
A special talk was organised and lecture was delivered
by Mrs. Prabhjot Kaur. An open house talk was also
held. Ms Harpreet Kaur, Vice-Principal of the college
threw light on the signicance of celebrating
'Constitution day.'
Pareksha pe Charcha 2.0 a talk was delivered
by the worthy Prime Minister Shri Narender Modi on
January 29, 2019. PM Modi discussed ways to handle
the exam stress with students in an interactive session.
Red Arts theatre group showcased a Nukkad
Natak in Open Air Theatre of the college. The
students and faculty members enjoyed the
performance that showcased the value of education
and importance of teachers in students' life.
Legal Literacy Cell of the College under the able
guidance of Ms Suparna Sharma and Dr Manipal Kaur
endeavors to do justice to the core purpose of this cell
that is to create legal awareness among young minds
and to identify the problems of their fellow citizens in
the neighbourhood. With this rationale the Legal
Literacy Cell of the College organized a special
lecture by Dr Supinder Kaur from Department of
Laws, Panjab University Chandigarh on November
16, 2018. The Topic of this special lecture was Cyber
Crime with Special reference to Women. The
expertise of the speaker enriched the students'
knowledge about the challenges and prospects for
women's safety involved in the cyber world in
contemporary society.

Electoral Literacy ClubThe Electoral Literacy Club was formed on the
directions of Government of India, which aims to
generate Election related awareness among the
students of the college. The club members collected
information of voters and non-votersamong students.
The process of collection of this information started at
the time of admission itself. The data was then
compiled and sent to the Deputy Commissioner's
ofce. The students were asked to give their voter card
no. and the others were asked to ll form 6 (form for
making voter card). The club also celebrated National
Voters Day on January 25, 2019 by organizing a quiz on
general awareness and a skit was also performed by
students of Dramatics Club, Rangtoli to impress upon
voting as an important constitutional duty.
Ehsaas, the Red Ribbon Club was established
in order to instill among the students the values of
service, motivation to develop healthy life styles, and
to increase availability of safe and adequate quantities
of blood to the needy. Ms Jasneet Kaur Malhi and Lt
Ritu Dhanoa aim to harness the potential of the youth
by equipping them with information on mental health,
substance abuse, nutrition and reproductive health. In
collaboration with Chandigarh State AIDS Control
Society, the Club builds capacity of students to become
peer educators in spreading message on behavior,
awareness against drug abuse, substance abuse, anti-

to observe International Youth Day. Students

The volunteers also participated in a rally on December
01, 2018 on International AIDS Day to create
awareness about this dreaded disease.
World Cancer Day, on February 04, 2019 was marked
by holding a lecture for the volunteers on cancer
awareness, screening and prevention of this disease and
myths related to it. A quiz was held after the lecture and
prizes were given to the volunteers.
A Poster Making and Slogan Writing contest
was held on March 27, 2019, which was open to all
college students, with an objective to create awareness
about HIV-AIDS.

The winners of Slogan Writing were, Nikita Sajwan of
B Com II won the rst prize, Cadet Aakriti Yadav
bagged the second prize and cadet Ishita of B A I won
the third position. Fun games were also played by the
volunteers, which included balloon blowing, making
red ribbons, and one-minute challenges.
The posters and slogans were displayed during the
Blood Donation Camp held on March 28, 2019, in
collaboration with the NSS Unit of the college. The
camp garnered excellent response, with 60 units of
blood donated by teaching and non-teaching staff
members and students of the college.
Diet Clinic was run by students of Home Science
during blood donation camp to create awareness about
iron deciency - Anaemia.
RAAHAT, a welfare committee formed with aim to
contribute selflessly to the community as part of social
responsibility. Under the guidance of Ms Prabhjot
Kaur, Dr Aradhna and Dr Rohini Arora, student
volunteers are creating awareness towards many
challenging issues like environment, education, skill
enhancement and many others. The list of activities is

RAAHAT was a part of Palash Tree plantations
initiative- the ofcial flower of Chandigarh Palash
Day, an event organized by Department of Forest and
Wildlife, Chandigarh Administration along with NGO
Yuvasatta. 'Raahat' with its 25 volunteers and faculty
members participated actively in the event. It was
organized on July 24, 2018 at Police Lines, Sector 26,
Chandigarh. The event was graced by honorable Shri
Arun Kumar Gupta, IAS, Home Secretary, Chandigarh
Administration as chief guest. Member of Yuvasatta
explained steps in successful plantation of sapling and
emphasized on use of vegetable peels as manures.
They also spoke on benets of growing herbal plants
and trees like Tulsi, Peepal, Kikar and others. Around
50 -70 trees were planted with help of volunteers of
NGO Yuvasatta.
Walk for Wildlife On the occasion of Wildlife
week to raise awareness among masses for
conservation of wildlife, nature and natural resources.
The Department of Forests and Wildlife along with
NGO Yuvasatta organized Walkathon on the theme of
'Walk for Wildlife' at Sukhna Lake on October 02,
2018. To contribute towards the great initiative Raahat
volunteers along with faculty members participated in
the event. Event was also attended by large number of
international and national members, school children,
general public, and other nature enthusiasts. The
students were well informed and guided about the
importance of conserving wildlife habitats.

Enhancement, organized at Kishangarh village for
women of 18 years and above, was Application of
basic embroidery stitches tomake sling bag/mobile
pouches. The target audience wasinformed of
advantages of learning embroidery stitches, which can
be used in beautication of any article for personal use
as well as for product development for commercial
purpose as well. They were given demonstrations on
selecting fabric, appropriate designs, various
embroidery stitches etc. The emphasis was given on
minimum use of resources with utilization of waste
material and other materials that were easily available
at homes.For future reference and for ease of working
they were given embroidery frames, threads and trail
samples. The women were enthusiastically involved
and learned the stitches keenly.
A cooking demonstration of three recopies was
organized for Meeting Energy Requirements of
Pregnant and Lactating Females. The event was
organized at Kishangarh Village on for Pregnant and
lactating females. The awareness was created for
incorporating essential nutrients in their diet with
emphasis on proteins and iron. Six student volunteers
and faculty members demonstrated recipes to the
target group. The steps were then demonstrated to the
target group and nally cooked in kitchen of one of the
household in the village. For ease of working they were
given handouts of the recipes. The women were
enthusiastically involved and learned the recipes with

'Chandigarh Says Goodbye Polythene Bags'
The event carried a message, 'say no to poly bags' in
collaboration with Department of Environment, an
NGO Yuvasatta and volunteers of Raahat welfare
committee, reached Elante Mall, Chandigarh on
January 03, 2019. They spread the message of 'Say No
to Polythene Bags; a street play 'Poly Raja' was staged
and over 500 free cloth bags were distributed to
mot iva te more and more people adopt ing
environmental friendly lifestyle by discarding use of
polythene bags.
Beti Bachao Beti Padao Guru Gobind Singh
College for Women welfare committee 'Raahat'
celebrated Daughter's Week' by performing street play
'BetiBachaoBetiPadao' in Kishangarh Village, on
January 25, 2019 to sensitize audiences with the issues
of female foeticide, to empower girls education and
improve India's sex ratio.
Career Counseling Workshop at GMHS
Dhanas RCII Six students of psychology semester VI
along with Dr. Savneet, Head, Department of
Psychology conducted a career counseling workshop
at GMHS, Dhanas, RC II and NBSP; on February 22,
2-19 for the students of IX C and IX E. They were given
an aptitude test on verbal and numerical reasoning.
Personal proles were prepared to guide the students to
choose the future stream.
Research Committee
Research Committee with Dr Surinder Kaur, Dr
Gurvinder Singh, Ms Pooja Malhotra, Dr Savneet Kaur
and Dr Sonia Sharma as its members, constantly
contributes to the furthering of research at the Institute.
The Research Committee is responsible for providing
vision and leadership in relation to research and
research training. The research committee of the
college comprise of highly qualied, motivated and
talented minds who have embarked on frontier careers
in research and development in varied areas. The
progress can be gauged by the fact that the staff and
students of the College have made steady progress in
various aspects of research such as in obtaining
research grants from various funding agencies, number
of papers published / presented, awards, honours and
distinctions, such as chairing technical session at
conferences, citation of appreciation andmany more.
March 24, 2018, a Research Lab was inaugurated
by S Rubinderjit Singh Brar, Director, Higher
Education and Director, School Education,
Chandigarh Administration, Chandigarh. The
Research Lab having its own Statistical Package for
the Social Sciences(SPSS) for teachers and students.
T h e r s t v o l u m e o f ' G y a n k o s h : A n
Interdisciplinary Journal' was released in the General
Body Meeting of Sikh Educational Society on January
05, 2019. The objective of the Journal is to bring
together the academic community of professionals,
researchers, and scholars on a common platform to
meaningfully enrich each other work through a
constructive dialogue thus encompassing within its
fold a narrative of true learning. The journal will follow
peer review process where manuscripts will be
examined by the Editorial Board and experts for their
review and feedback.
Gurmat Vichar Sabha Education is not mere acquisition of knowledge
through academic curriculum but also imbibing the
ethical and moral values to become a complete human
being. It becomes a matter of paramount importance
for an educational institute that moral training should
be imparted to the students to overcome modern trends
of materialism, insensitivity and moral degradation
among the youth. GurmatVichar Sabha under the
leadership of Ms Sukhmeen Kaur, Dr Surinder Kaur,
Dr Manpreet Kaur and Ms Sukhdeep Kaur strive to
instill spiritual values in the mind of students with great
dedication and devotion.
The academic year 2018-19 started with the
Inaugural Function in the month of July, 2018. Shabad
Kirtan was recited by the students and the staff
members to seek the blessings of the Gurus to help
them all through the session. Sahej Path of the Sri
Guru Granth Sahib Ji was also started on this day which
the staff and students recited collectively throughout
the year. On November 23, 2018, students of the
college attended Nagar Kirtan to commemorate
Prakash Utsav of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
To mark the 550th birth anniversary of Shri Guru
Nanak Dev ji, Bebe Nanaki: Wall of Kindness was
erected on February 7, 2019 adjacent to the college gate
wherein underprivileged people can pick up items of
use to them. The clothes and woolens are donated by
students and staff members.
The birth anniversary of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji
was celebrated with gaiety and religious fervor in our
college campus as College Sthapana Divas on
February 9, 2019.Bhai Inderpal Singh ji Chandigarh
wale and Bhai Sulkhan Singh Ji, Hajuri Raagi, Sri
Darbar Sahib, Amritsar recited the Kirtan. Giani
Jaswant Singh ji, Ex-Granthi, Sri Darbar Sahib,
Amritsar enlightened the sangat with his Gurmat
Vichar. Guru ka langar was prepared by the students

Punjab on February 23-14, 2019.
Entrepreneurship Awareness week (February
25- March 5, 2019) was celebrated on February 27,
2019 in collaboration with National Institute of
Technical Teachers' Training and Research (NITTTR),
Chandigarh. Around 200 students of B Com and M
Com participated in this event. Guest of Honour of the
event was Smt Himja Rana, founder of Bossladies. Dr
Sanjay Kaushik, Professor, University Business
School, Panjab University, Chandigarh was the Chief
Guest. Keynote Speaker was Sh Arun Chetak, Vice
President Deltron, a division of Continental Device
India Ltd. The main objective of the event was to create
awareness among the students about the various facets
of entrepreneurship as an alternative career option.
College registered itself in the government-initiated
scheme Shreyas to introduce employable skill into
college learning, promoting apprenticeship as integral
part of education, aligning education, curriculum with
the needs of the industry and service sector and
promoting on job exposure in all students in skill sets of
their choice and aptitude.
Numerous students of the College achieved
placements in var ious Govt and Non-govt
organisations, Schools, Colleges and other institutions.
Rangtoli, the Dramatics Club of the College
brought laurels to the institution in this academic year.
Under the coordination of Dr Sarabjit Kaur and Ms
Himani Matta, students of the College won number of
prizes in the Zonal as well as Inter Zonal Youth and
Heritage Festival 2018 held at Dev Samaj College,
Sector 45, Chandigarh and Dashmesh Girls College,
Badal (Punjab) respectively.
The College Dramatics team stood First in the One Act
Play category and also bagged the second Individual
prize for Best Actor for the role of GulBano played by
Kushi Mandal from B Com II. The college team
secured First position in Skit titled 'Thanaa Kudiyan
Da'. Diljot Kaur and Harmandeep Kaur bagged First
prize for Bhaand. The Mime team was adjudged
Second during Panjab University Zonal Youth and
Heritage Festival-2018. Kamaljot Kaur and
Deepanshi stood Second in Histrionics and Mimicry
respectively.
At the 60th Inter Zonal Youth and Heritage
Festival held at Dashmesh Girls College, Badal from
October 30-November 2, 2018 following positions
were achieved:
One Act Play Team Secured Second position with
Individual First Prize for Best Actor, which was bagged
by Sanskriti Chandel for playing the Character of
younger ,GulBano. The Skit performed by the College
students stood at the Second position.
Dramatics Team won Third prize in the Ad Mad
show organised by GGDSD College, Sector 32
Chandigarh on February 26, 2019. Neha, Sumitra and
Nikita B Com III along with Aanchal Sharma and

Baat'.

College Magazine
An Annual College Magazine, Gyan Manik, is published to encourage students
towards creative writing. It is an important portal for students to express their
thoughts and ideas. The college published a Special Celebratory Edition of Gyan thManik this year to commemorate 550 Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji.
Faculty members as well as students contributed articles towards this issue
dwelling on various facets of Guru Nanak's life and teachings. Gyan Manik is
compiled under Dr Harneet Kaur Sandhu-Chief Editor, Dr Sarabjit Kaur- Editor,
English Section, Dr Aradhana - Editor, Hindi Section, Dr Gurvinder Singh-
Editor, Punjabi Section.
Trips and Tour
A one-day Adventure Trip was organised to
Sanawar Nature Camp, Kasauli, by Trips and Tours
Committee of the college on October 26, 2018. 75
students from the college went for the trip
accompanied by four faculty members. Upon arrival at
the Nature Camp, group was welcomed by the camp
staff and served hearty breakfast before giving brief
introduction about the various activities to be
followed. The group then went for a 7 km long trek.
Students participated in various outbound activities
like Zipline, Burma Bridge, Bamboo Bridge, Catwalk,
Obstacle Course, Commando Net, etc. In the evening,
DJ party was organised at the campsite followed by tea
and snacks.
One day Educational Trip was organised by
Science Department of the college to Pushpa Gujral
Science City, Jalandhar on March 17, 2019 sponsored
by DST, Chandigarh. 88 students from the college
went for the trip accompanied by faculty members.
Students were very enthusiastic to experience the
various science related models and experiments.
Students enjoyed laser show, 3-D show, a documentary
on global warming, and movie in Digital Planetarium.

The literary society of the College Abhivyakti- has been blooming in the hands of Ms Sabhnam Kaur and Ms
Lovleen Kaur Sohi who have been tirelessly working under the able guidance of Ms Sukhmeen Kaur, Dr
Aaradhna and Dr Ramnik Kohli. The College students participated and won many prizes in literary
competitions. Environment Society ‘Vasudha’ registered with
C h a n d i g a r h A d m i n i s t r a t i o n S o c i e t y N o :
ED/Env.Soc/12 has been engaged in various activities
for promoting the cause of green environment. 50
volunteers have been enrolled under this society, who
participated enthusiastically in the various events
throughout the year. A Tree Plantation Drive was
organised to promote the cause of Green and Clean
Campus on August 20, 2019 by planting variety of
saplings in the campus. An Inter College competition
was organised on September 27, 2018 during which
activities like poster making, rangoli competition etc
were held.
The Herbal Garden was inaugurated on January
5, 2019 by S Gurdev Singh, President SES in presence
of Er Kulbir Singh ,Vice-President SES , Col (Retd.) J
S Bala, Secretary SES, Dr Jatinder Kaur , Principal, Ms
Harpreet Kaur,Vice-Principal. To take the mission of
environment conservation forward Ms Harpreet Kaur,
the convener of the society along with the other
members Ms Lucky Malhotra, Ms Harpreet Kaur, and
Dr Sujata Vohra visited various botanical and herbal
gardens across the city and conceptualised the idea of a
herbal garden in the College. The Department of
Environment, Chandigarh Administration sanctioned
an amount of Rs 20,300/- to develop it in the College.
The Herbal garden of the College is spread out in an
area of 200 square meters where 35 varieties of herbs,
medicinal plants and rare plants such as Kala Bansa,
Hing, Pathar Chat, Ashwagandha etc have been
planted. This endeavour inculcated in the students a
sense of familiarity with surroundings and its
conservation. A team of gardeners led by Sh Ram
Baran worked tirelessly towards developing the
Herbal Garden.
Green Marathon was organised by SBI on
February 10, 2019 from the Chandigarh Club to
Sukhna Lake. Fifteen students of the College
participated and were given e-certicates and medals.

The College hostel named after Mata Kheevi truly
reflects her mission to provide comfort and hospitality
to its residents. Chief Warden, Ms Harbinder Kaur;
Warden, Ms Renuka and Assistant Warden, Ms
Anureet Kaur along with the dedicated staff showcase
sheer devotion with the principles of Sewa and Langar
established by Mata Kheevi ji. The Hostel committee
comprising Ms Sukhmeen Kaur, Ms Meenu Sharma,
Ms Harpreet Kaur, and Dr Amandeep Kaur takes great
interest in its smooth functioning. Total student
strength of 332 reflects diversity of students hailing
from far off places like Manipur, J&K, Himachal,
Haryana etc.
The College Hostel provides a homely stay to the
students with an enriching environment lled
with holistic activities throughout year such as
academic, social, religious and cultural. Keeping the
tradition to welcome the new students, Freshers' Party
was organized on September 08, 2018.
Harjap Waraich was crowned Miss Fresher, Manjot
Kaur was the 1st Runner up whereas Eureka was the
second Runner up. Rupinder Kaur from MSc I was
adjudged Miss Elegant and Harmanpreet Kaur of BAI
was crowned Miss Perfect.
College Hostel
Alumni of Guru Gobind Singh College for Women
took a walk down the corridors of nostalgia on May 02,
2018 as the College organized an Alumni Meet. The
event was a great opportunity for the alumni to
reconnect with their old friends, batch mates, and
teachers. It further provided a platform for the students
to share their success stories and continue to strengthen
their bond with the College. The Alumni Association
created the verve of the days gone by.

vigour. Foremost, I extend my heart felt gratitude to our
Hon'ble Chief Guest for gracing the occasion with his
