As our College observes and celebrates the dual occasion of the 350th Parkash Purb of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the Golden Jubilee of the College, I take immense pride and express profound joy in presenting the Annual Report of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College Chandigarh for the year 2016-17 to the august gathering present here today.

On behalf of S Gurdev Singh Brar IAS (retd), President, Sikh Educational Society, Col (retd) Jasmer Singh Bala, Secretary, Sikh Educational Society, other esteemed members of the Management, various dignitaries, faculty members and students of this College, I extend a very warm welcome to our worthy Chief Guest Dr GS Kalkat, Padma Bhushan (2007) and Padma Shri (1981) widely honoured and highly acclaimed for his achievements and contribution in the field of agriculture in Punjab.

Born on June 17, 1926, Dr GS Kalkat upheld a brilliant track record in academics, having obtained a BSc degree in Agriculture from Punjab Agriculture College, Lyallpur (Pakistan) in 1947, MSc degree in Agriculture from Punjab University, Solan (HP) in 1956 and a PhD from Ohio State

University, Columbus, Ohio, USA in 1958.

Professionally, he has held significant posts and positions as Deputy Director/Joint Director Agriculture, Punjab from 1960 to 1971; Director of Agriculture, Punjab from 1971 to 1973; Agriculture Commissioner-cum-Additional Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture with the Government of India, New Delhi from 1973 to 1978; Senior Agriculturist, World Bank from 1978 to 1989; Vice Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana from 1998 to 2001 and Chairman, Punjab State Farmers Commission since 2005 to date.

As a mark of esteem, in recognition of his significant and noteworthy contribution to the field of agriculture, he has been awarded honorary degrees from universities like Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana in 2013; Punjabi University, Patiala in 2014 and felicitated by National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, India on the occasion of celebrations of the Golden Jubilee of Green Revolution for contributions to Green Revolution that turned the country from food shortage to self sufficiency on November 27, 2015.

It would encourage our students to know that apart from academic and professional brilliance, Dr Kalkat was declared All Round Best Student in 1946-47 at Punjab Agriculture College Lyallpur (Pakistan) and also obtained the distinguished International Student Award by Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA.

Dr Kalkat’s zest for improvement and development is evident through his achievements and I consider it my privilege to introduce our students to a personality of such high stature and outstanding achievements. Our students have been extremely fortunate to have amongst them today, a person who will inspire them to strive and succeed further.

About the CollegeEstablished in the year 1966, Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, a premier institute of Sikh Educational Society commemorates the dual event of the 350th birth anniversary of the tenth Sikh Guru and the Golden Jubilee of the College in the current academic session. Committed to academic excellence and a religio-cultural and social enhancement, the College was established as a tricentennial memorial to the Tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the great saint-soldier and a scholar par excellence.

Chief Minister of Punjab, Sardar Partap Singh Kairon laid the foundation stone of the College on August 29, 1963. With an affiliation to Panjab University Chandigarh, and under the first Principal S Gurbax Singh Shergill, 18 teachers were appointed to teach Pre University classes for Arts and Sciences (pre medical and pre engineering) along with three Years degree course for BA and BSc classes to the first batch of 240 students. The student strength increased to 1040 in the following session with a jump of 800 students in the first year itself. Being the first co-educational institution of this region, the College attracted progressive and capable students having produced prominent alumni like S Bir Davinder Singh, Ex Deputy Speaker Punjab Vidhaan Sabha; S Charanjit Singh Channi, Minister for Technical Education; S Rana Gurjit Singh, Cabinet Minister Punjab and Former Member Parliament; Dr Ajaib Singh, Former Member of Commision for Minorities PPSC; Sh Suresh Arora, DGP Punjab IPS; S HPS Mahal, Session Judge and many more in its initial batches.

Fifty years after its inception, the College has immensely progressed to a co-educational institution of eminence and repute offering 8 undergraduate and 11 postgraduate courses being offered to 6391 students under the tutelage of 170 teaching faculty supported by the office comprising of 94 non-teaching faculty members. In fifty years of its existence, the College has produced great administrators, academicians, scholars, sportsmen, artists, engineers, doctors, scientists, and many more.

The College continuously implements and adopts growth and expansion policies in the academic curriculum, field of research and development, placement and co-curricular activities, creative endeavours, social and religious programmes, student welfare and infrastructural development.

The current academic session which falls in the 350th birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, which coincides with the College Golden Jubilee, marks a special historical moment for the College as our academic institution, named after him, derives and implements its vision from his lofty teachings and ideology. As a homage to the enlightened soul, the College put in special efforts throughout the year holding innumerable, academic, developmental, social and cultural programmes contributing to the worldwide revelry and festivities being observed in Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s memory, prominent among which was the celebration at Patna Sahib, his birthplace, in the month of January 2017.

There has been a consistent endeavour in all these years to live up to the ideals and teachings of the tenth Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji enshrined in the insignia of the College which has been designed by the legendary artist S Sobha Singh.

ObjectivesThe College since its inception has suitably adapted itself to the changing educational set up. Its aim is to provide an environment in which the students can excel in all domains such as academics, intellectual, spiritual and physical. The lofty goals and laudable objectives of this College address to quality education, gainful employment, equal opportunities and access to latest development in the fields of knowledge and technology.

Following objectives have been devised to impart quality education among the students:

College Management

The Sikh Educational Society (SES), Chandigarh (Regd), is a duly constituted and elected body which governs 8 colleges and school including this College. This governing body comprises of eminent bureaucrats, philanthropists, scholars, prominent educationists and administrators. The main endeavour of the SES has been to provide a modern educational, cultural and social environment to the students of this region.

Presently, S Gurdev Singh Brar, IAS (retd) is President SES, S Kulbir Singh, Chief Engineer (retd) is Vice President SES, Col (retd) Jasmer Singh Bala is Secretary SES and S Karandeep Singh Cheema, Advocate is Joint Secretary SES.

The invaluable vision, varied experiences and constant encouragement of the members of the SES contributes tremendously towards the growth of the College. They have armed the College with modern infrastructure and latest pedagogical aids which are used effectively by the highly motivated staff and students.

Principal’s NewsPrincipal Jyoti Lamba took over as College Principal in October 2016. Dr Jyoti Lamba joined the College in 1981 as a lecturer in the Department of English. She remained Head, Department of English from April 2015 to September 2016 before elevation to the present post of Principal.Since the beginning of her tenure, the College has been abuzz with academic, cultural, social and developmental activities commemorating the 350th Parkash Purb of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the Golden Jubilee Year of the College. With meticulous planning and ardour, about 15 mega events were accomplished successfully under her persevering and efficient headship dedicated to the above-mentioned celebrations. In addition, the regular and innumerable academic and social cultural College activities were carried out as a part of the routine events of the College.The Principal keeps herself updated by attending the various conferences and workshops for a smooth functioning of the College affairs. Prominent events attended by her in the current session were: National Training Workshop ‘Gateway for Digital India Vision – National Academic Depository (MHRD Initiative)' organised by PU Chd and sponsored by RUSA on Mar 8, 2016 and Principals' Conference of all affiliated Colleges of PU under the Chairmanship of Prof Arun K Grover (VC, PU Chd) on Nov 30, 2016 at GGDSD College Sec 32 Chd.An alumna of Sacred Heart Dalhousie and Amritsar, she pursued her bachelor’s degree with English Honours from GCG Sec 11 Chd and proceeded to obtain a master’s degree followed by PGCTE from CIEFL, Hyderabad. She further acquired her MPhil and PhD entitled “The Making of the Poetic Self: Versions of Twentieth Century Autobiographies with Special Reference to Yeats’ Autobiographies, C Day Lewis’ The Buried Day and Spender’s World Within World” from PU Chd. She also acquired administrative experience before becoming a principal with additional charges such as Dean Admissions, Dean Research, Dean Faculty of Arts and Dean Girl Students of the College. An experience of over three decades behind her, Principal Dr Jyoti Lamba has been efficiently handling all college affairs.

Two new Laboratories (Physical Lab and Lab No 4) have been developed in the PG Deptt of Chemistry.

The PG Deptt of Zoology has a Smart Lab with provision of LCD and Multi-media facility. This session the department purchased Centrifuge (10,000 rpm), Digital Camera for the Zoom Binocular Microscope, Electrophoretic Kit and a Storage Almira for Teaching Charts.

The PG Deptt of Computer Science has a technically robust set up with three powerful IBM servers and five well-equipped labs comprising of 20 systems with Intel core i5, 20 systems with Intel i3 processors and 58 systems of advanced configuration, interconnected using Fast Ethernet connection of 100 Mbps. Broadband Internet along with Wi-Fi facility on secured network is available round the clock for faculty and students. The Department has a smart classroom and also other equipments like LCD projectors, printers (coloured), scanners to help the students with the practical work and projects. The Department has its own Reference Library equipped with 316 books for ready reference for both staff and students

with an exclusive computer and printer access. Departmental books worth ` 40,000 were added to the college library during the year under report. In addition to existing set-up, access to e-resources has also been incorporated to promote research. Keeping in view, the changing technical scenario, the Department is promoting the use of free/open software having an exclusive lab set up for the same.

The PG Deptt of Biotechnology and Microbial Biotechnology is equipped with new instruments like CO2 Incubator, Tissue Culture Racks, Vertical Laminar Air Flow, three Electronic Weighing Balances and Autoclaves. Animal Tissue Culture Lab (ATC) and Plant Tissue Culture Lab (PTC) were also established.In the current year a Real Time PCR System, Analytical Grade Water Distillation System, -80°C Cryofreezer, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, Laminar Flow, two Hot Plates and a pH Meter were added to further strengthen the infrastructure of the Department.

The PG Deptt of Economics bought a new cupboard for books. Books are provided to the students for reference.

College Hostel

Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha Library

The College started its first on-campus Hostel facility in 1993-1994 with an accommodation for about 88 students housed in 26 rooms. At present, the College has a Boys’ Hostel with an accommodation for about 237 students in the campus. There are about 73 rooms, separate Warden Office and a Waiting Room. Facilities like separate Study Room, Fitness Centre, 2 Guest Rooms, Indoor Games and LCD TV are provided. Periodic renovation of the hostel is undertaken to ensure good comfort and hygiene to the students. The hostel is well equipped with

modern amenities like water coolers and geysers. An expert dietician regularly visits and updates the menu. The Annual Hostel Party was organised followed by dinner on Mar 20, 2017. Chief Guest Col (retd) JS Bala, Secretary SES awarded two students for exhibiting exemplary discipline and for their academic achievements. Students enthralled the audience with songs, impromptu speeches, skit and bhangra performances.

The College Library is housed on two floors and a meticulous effort is made every session to upgrade the existing resources. An annual refurbishment of the Reference Section takes place on a regular basis. The library has an exclusive section for the postgraduate departments and a large collection of religious writings and reference material of the Centre for Sikh Studies. A broadband internet facility has also been made available for the staff.

The fully automated College Library uses UGC recommended SOUL (Software for University Liabraries), a user friendly software by INFLIBNET in a fully networked envoirnment. An online Public Access Catalogue is available for quick retrieval of information. N-List E-Resources are made

available for access to the teaching staff and three Computers, with internet facility have been allocated for the faculty members, so that they may access to electronic resources (6000 + e-journals and 1,35,000 + e-books).

Special collection includes result gazettes of Panjab University Exams, Newspaper clipping service and Employment alerts.

In the current session College Library acquired books in the subject of English, Sociology, History, Economics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Zoology, Political Science and Public Administration.

Accommodation for girl students is provided in the Girls’ Hostel of Guru Gobind Singh College for Women situated in the same campus. Here there are 138 rooms with an accommodation for 361 students. At present 128 girls of the college are staying in the hostel.

Activities like The Annual Hostlers’ Freshers’ Party, organised on Sep 3, 2016, involves the students in fostering a bond and creating a positive atmosphere in the hostel.

Centre for Sikh Studies

Established by the Sikh Educational Society, the Centre for Sikh Studies was inaugurated by Singh Sahib Tarlochan Singh, Jathedar Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, Anandpur Sahib on Jan 30, 2012. The Centre for Sikh Studies is devoted to the founding principles of the College to provide modern academic, scientific and professional education to the students while inculcating in them the cultural and moral values preached by the great luminary, the Saint Soldier Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The Centre endeavours to enlighten students about the rich socio-cultural heritage through various activities including talks and seminars. It further facilitates research studies on Sri Guru Granth Sahib and other Sikh Religio-Cultural literature. The Centre is equipped with a library containing a large collection of religious writings.

Many activities were conducted by the Centre for Sikh Studies in the session 2016-17.

The SES in collaboration with Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi organised a Kavi Darbaar to commemorate the 350th Parkash Purb of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji and to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the College on Mar 9, 2017. Col (retd) JS Bala, Secretary SES welcomed all the esteemed guests and highlighted the relevance of Punjabi poetry in today's world. He acquainted the audience with the prestigious poet and saint-soldier, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Dr Manmohan, IPS and a renowned writer was the keynote speaker. S Tejinder Singh Luthra, DGP, Chandigarh was the Chief Guest of the day.

Padam Shri Surjit Pattar compèred the Kavi Darbaar where renowned poets participated in this poetic symposium. Col (retd) JS Bala, Surjit Pattar, Dr Manmohan, Kulwant Grewal, Ujagar Singh Kanwal, Darshan Buttar, Sukhwinder Amrit, Manjit Indra, Surinder Gill, Amarjit Ghumman, Sushil Dusanjh, Gurtej Kuharwala, Sandeep and Balwinder Chahal were the poets who recited poetry which was greatly appreciated by the audience.

A section entitled 'A Literary Forum' was also a part of this programme based on talks and discussions on contemporary Punjabi literature. Prof Yograj was the invited special speaker who delivered a lecture on contemporary Punjabi poetry. Dr Deepak Manmohan Singh, Guest of Honour, an eminent Professor at Pbi Univ, Patiala lauded the role of SES for organising this literary event. Dr Amarjit Ghumman, member of Punjabi Advisory Board of Sahitya Akademi Delhi was the coordinator of this programme.

Dr Gurmej Singh (PG Deptt of Punjabi) and Dr Amarjit Ghumman (PG Deptt of Punjabi) compèred this programme. Col (retd) JS Bala, Secretary SES delivered the vote of thanks.

A Gurmukhi Calligraphy Workshop was organised in the College commemorating the 350th Parkash Purb of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. It was conducted on Jan 30, 2017 by the Qalm Dawaat Society of team Chandigarh in colobration with the College students who conduct Gurmat Hobby classes under the centre for Sikh Studies.

There were more than 50 participants that included students from various Colleges and Institutes, Guests and Professors. The unique feature of the workshop was the purely 'Puratan Maryada' of writing Gurmukhi. For this, 'Qalms' (Dip Pens) made of Bamboo were provided to the participants. The ink was prepared in accordance with the 'Puratan Vidhi' procedure given at the end of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Mehtab Singh

and Amanjot Singh from PU Chandigarh coordinated with Karan Singh (BA II) and Amrinder Singh (BSc III Biotech Hons) to conduct the workshop. Dr Navjot Kaur (PG Deptt of English) in the convenor of Gurmat Hobby Classes. Mr Gurpreet Singh Pandher (PG Deptt of English) is the coordinator of the Centre for Sikh Studies.

Research and DevelopmentUGC CellUGC Cell of the College facilitates correspondence between the college and granting agencies like University Grants Commission, New Delhi, ICSSR, DST etc. It generates proposals under various schemes for seeking grants from these agencies and also helps in settlement of accounts.

Dr Pritam Singh Gill (Deptt of Physics) successfully completed his major research project of 3 years duration sanctioned by UGC, New Delhi, titled ‘Characterization … Devices’ worth ` 6,11,800.

Dr Harmeet Kaur (PG Deptt of Commerce) was sanctioned a research project titled ‘Occupation Stress, Work Life Balance and Job Satisfaction Among Female Employees – A Study of Public and

Private Sector Banks of Punjab and Chandigarh’ worth ` 4,00,000 for a duration of 18 months by ICSSR.

Travel Grant of ` 2,01,372 was received by Dr Harjeet Kaur Virk (PG Deptt of Commerce) from UGC, New Delhi for presenting a paper titled ‘Emotional Intelligence and Stress : A Relationship Study’ in the International Human Resource

Management Conference held at Canada from Jun 21-23, 2016.

During 2016-17, the College received approximately ` 65 Lakhs under travel grants, fellowships and major/minor research projects.

Ms Manbir Kaur Dhaliwal (PG Deptt of Commerce) is the coordinator and Dr Rimpi Kaur (PG Deptt of Commerce) is deputy coordinator of the UGC Cell.

Rashtriya Uchchtar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA)Rashtriya Uchchattar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), a National Higher Education Mission is a holistic scheme of development for higher education in India initiated in 2013 by the MHRD, Govt of India. The centrally sponsored scheme aims at providing strategic funding to higher educational institutions throughout the country. Funding is provided by the central ministry through State Higher Education Council, Chandigarh UT. The College received Preparatory Grant to the tune of ` 3 Lacs for the session 2016-17 on 50:50 sharing basis for organising workshops, trainings, and capacity building, and for holding NET classes for PG students and remedial classes for slow learners and weaker students in the College. Sanction of grant of 2 crores has been announced for construction (35%), renovation (35%) and purchases (30%) also on 50:50 sharing basis.

The RUSA chapter of the College, under the guidance of Principal Dr Jyoti Lamba, planned and organised 4 workshops on diverse themes, 2 FDPs and Free UGC/CSIR NET classes along with remedial classes

successfully during the session 2016-17.

Research CommitteeThe Research Committee is a nucleus for promotion of quality research activities in the College and for coordination with various national and international academic and funding bodies. It supports administration of research initiatives,faculty development programmes, workshops across disciplines and departments to stimulate quality research. The aim of the Committee is to encourage quality research in all the disciplines; to disseminate information regarding various seminars, conferences, workshops and research projects. In order to achieve these goals, the research committee works in close

association with UGC Cell, RUSA and the College Library.

The session 2016-17 saw the process of creating a research data bank of the entire faculty of the College by the Committee. An expert Lecture on 'Publishing Quality Research Papers in High Impact Journals' and an Inter-college Competition of Research and Library related events were organised in collaboration with Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha Library of the College.

IGNOU CentreIGNOU Centre of the College is one of the major centres of North India. Besides the regular degree courses of BA, BSc and BCom it also provides a Diploma in Nutrition, Health and Education. 3000 students are

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC)The College has a separate Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) which helps in organisation and dissemination of administrative as well as academic information pertaining to quality benchmarks/parameters so as to create a learner-centric environment. The main aim of IQAC is to provide quality education to the students and create an environment where faculty is encouraged to adopt the requisite knowledge and technology for participatory teaching and learning process. Based on the feedback response from the NAAC peer review team, students, parents and other stakeholders on quality-related processes, the IQAC has taken steps to put in place

an organised methodology of documentation and internal communication. To improve the functioning of IQAC some of the steps taken include:

Ø The whole campus including the hostel has been connected via a WiFi Connection.

Ø A comprehensive Data Centre has been established which will act as a single point nodal center for collection and further dissemination of information pertaining to faculty updates and activities by individual departments.

The office of the Dean College Development Council (DCDC), PU acts as an intermediary between the University and its Affiliated Colleges. It plans for the integrated development of the Affiliated Colleges and provides them with the required necessary help and guidance. Infrastructure, Financial Details, Student Strength, Courses, Laboratory Details, Staff and Faculty Details, etc on the DCDC website. Ms Meena Gupta is the Nodal In-charge and team members include Ms Khushwant Kaur, Ms Anu Kaul, Ms Navneet Sandhu and Mr Kapil Kaushik (Technical Assistant) all from PG Deptt of Computer Science.

3 major publications are ensured every year as a part of the College activity facilitating the regular functioning of the College. Event : Story Telling Session 2016 to commemorate the 136th birth anniversary of Munshi PremchandOrganiser/s : The PG Deptt of English in collaboration with the Deptt of HindiDate : Aug 24, 2016Commemorating the 136th birth anniversary of Munshi Premchand, a novel writer, short story writer and dramatist, referred to as the "Upanyas Samrat" (emperor of novelists) by writers, a special event was organised in the College. His works include more than a dozen novels, around 250 short stories, several essays and translations of a number of foreign literary works into Hindi. Renowned writer Prof Neel Kamal Puri and Prof Aradhna, Head, Deptt of Hindi, GGSCW mesmerised the audience with their enchanting rendition and brought to life the short story Kafan by Premchand. Event : National Seminar on Multiculturalism in Literature: Re-Inventing Identities Organiser/s : The PG Deptt of English sponsored by the Sikh Educational SocietyDate : Feb 17, 2017Reflecting the College motto of Maanas Ki Jaat Sabhai Ekai Pehchaanbo (recognise whole human race as of one caste), the Seminar brought thoughts and voices of varying cultures on a common platform. Sponsored by the SES Chd, the Seminar invitees included eminent scholars and personalities from various fields: Dr Surjit Patar, a renowned poet and writer, was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Session; the Keynote Address was delivered by Prof Simi Malhotra of Jamia Millia Islamia University, N Delhi; Prof Rumina Sethi, Chairperson Deptt of English and Cultural Studies, PU Chd was the Guest of Honour. At the Valedictory Session, Mr Navtej Johar, a famous choreographer and urban activist, was Chief Guest and Prof Shelley Walia, Deptt of English and Cultural Studies, PU Chd and Fellow Panjab University Senate, delivered the Valedictory address. The Seminar witnessed participation of delegates from colleges and universities all over the country. Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh; AIIMS, N Delhi; Centre for Comparitive Literature, Santiniketan, WB; Central University of Gujarat, Ganghinagar; University of Lucknow, UP; Madras Christian College, Chennai, were among the many others. Highlights of the Seminar: • 10 parallel academic sessions were scheduled for 97 research papers. A special session was devoted to research papers on the theme of Multiculturalism in Gurbani. The session was jointly chaired by Prof Prabhjot Kaur, retd Principal and Ex-President, Institute of Sikh Studies Chd and Prof Kulwant Singh, President, Institute of Sikh Studies Chd. The Guest of Honour for the session was S Bir Devinder Singh Sarao, an Alumnus of the College and former Deputy Speaker, Punjab Legislative Assembly. In the multidisciplinary seminar, separate sessions were also allocated to research papers of Punjabi and Hindi languages. The Punjabi session was chaired by Prof Gurmukh Singh, Deptt of Punjabi, Pbi Univ Patiala. The Guests of Honour for the session were S Darshan Singh Dhir, and S Manmohan Singh Maheroo, both renowned writers. The Hindi session was jointly chaired by Prof Harmohinder Singh Bedi, Ex Professor and Head, Deptt of Hindi, GNDU and Prof RPS Josh, Deptt of Hindi, PGGCC Sec 42 Chd. The Academic Sessions of English were chaired by Professors from various colleges of the city. The postgraduate students of various Colleges around the city were encouraged to present papers in a separate session.• Mehar Baba Charitable Trust, Bassi Pathana, an NGO working towards Women Empowerment put up an exhibition-cum-sale of handmade ethnic products for the delegates and guests as an extension activity in support of Women Empowerment, a sub theme of the seminar. The organisers also purchased gifts and souvenirs from the Trust for the dignitaries at the Seminar. Prof Shelley Walia, contributing to the cause of Women Empowerment, donated the honorarium offered to him by the College to the Gur Aasra Trust, Mohali, an orphanage for girls. • Punjab Digital Library, Chandigarh put up a stall where they educated the visitors and students on their Adopt-A-Book programme. The Punjab Digital Library has been involved in preserving rare books through digitisation technology so that all is not lost. • Well-known publishers, in collaboration with Bhai Kahan Singh College library, displayed their books so that the relevant books could be made accessible to the scholars.Ms Indu Gogna, HOD was the convener and Dr Navjot Kaur, Ms Gursheek Kaur and Dr Shelly Narang were the organising secretaries.

Computer Science and Biotechnology and Microbial Biotechnology.Date : Feb 28, 2017The National Science Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm in order to commemorate the invention of the ‘Raman Effect’ in India by the Indian Physicist, Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman. Around 300 students participated in Project Exhibition, Power Point Presentation, Poster and Rangoli Making Competition organised during the Science Day celebration. Prof Sandeep Sehajpal was the Chief Guest of the occasion and judge for project exhibition contest. He delivered a lecture on ‘Timeline’ during the inaugural function. Ms Satinder Kaur (Deptt of Physics) was the convenor while Ms Sarabjeet Kaur (PG Deptt of Chemistry) and Ms Manpreet Bajwa (Deptt of Physics) were coordinators for the event.

Event : Guest Lecture on World DramaOrganiser/s : The PG Deptt of English in collaboration with Department of English, GGSCW Chd.Date : Mar 10, 2017To familiarise the students of English Literature with the evolution, growth and perspectives of drama and its social relevance, eminent scholar, writer and translator, formerly teaching in the Deptt of English and Cultural Studies, Prof Rana Nayar of PU Chd, delivered a lecture on the above mentioned theme. Postgraduate students and undergraduate students of the honours, elective and general English classes of SGGS College and GGS College for Women attended the lecture. Faculty members of the PG Deptt of English of both the colleges were also present amongst the audience. In a very relevant, lucid and engaging power point presentation-cum-lecture, Dr Rana Nayar engaged the audience and explained the philosophy, theme and structure of the theatre from the Greeks to the contemporary times.

Event : Guest Lecture on Postcolonial TheoryOrganiser/s : The PG Deptt of English in collaboration with the Department of English, GGSCW Chd.Date : Mar 7, 2017Prof Maninder Sidhu of PG Govt College for Girls, Sec 11 Chd, delivered the Lecture to undergraduate students of honours, elective and general English and postgraduate students of English of SGGS College and GGS College for Women in the seminar room of GGS College for Women. The English faculty members of both the Colleges were also present for the Lecture which apprised the students of the significance and application of theory in literary studies. She delivered a comprehensive lecture on the evolution of theory from Plato/ Aristotle till the current times referring to postcolonial, deconstruction, structuralism, feminism amongst few others. The audience benefitted highly from the linear perspective of theory.

Dr Kirpal Singh an Eminent Historian was honoured for his notable contribution in the field of History. The Seminar was organised under the patronage of Sikh Educational Society. Sikh Educational Society EventsPanth Rattan Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra: Memorial Awards Function

The Annual Memorial Awards Function organised by The Sikh Educational Society (SES) in the memory of Panth Rattan Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra, former president of Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) was held on July 13, 2016 in the College. Jathedar Tohra remained President of SES from 1995 to 2004. His contribution to the educational system is highly commendable as it served to upgrade the status of the society. On this occasion, the SES honours two/three prominent personalities from the field of Religion, Culture, Literature and who lead the ethical path towards forming a valuable society while making valid contributions to the cause of Punjab History, Culture and Sikh value system.

This year, the SES accorded the honour to Baba Labh Singh Ji, kar-sewa-wale, who has contributed immensely in running various educational, religious, charitable and social service initiatives. His contribution for the preservation and development of Punjabi/ Sikh value system is well known. The recipient of the next award was a well-known organisation, named, Punjab Jagriti Manch, which has since its inception in 1987-88 played a prominent role in the upliftment of Punjab's political, religious, economic, cultural and linguistic features. Three other personalities were also honoured in this function: Prof Chaman Lal Dhamija who has uncovered the

spiritual evolution of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in his book Panchnad from the point of view of neuroscience, psychology and physics in a new approach to spiritual revolution; Prof Pandit Rao who has translated the Japuji Sahib in Kannad language; and Mr Parminder Singh Aziz, for his valuable contribution to Punjabi language with Punjabi translation of Dr Paramjit Singh Sachdeva’s Appreciating Sikhism.

Sardar Manjit Singh Calcutta was the Chief Guest on this occasion. Dr Kehar Singh, a well known political thinker, former Head, Deptt of Political Science, Punjabi University Patiala and Ex Chairman of Punjab School Education Board, presented his paper titled 'Perspective on the Sikh Urge for Independence'. Other panellists in the discussion included Dr Bawa Singh, former Vice-Chairman, National Commission for Minorities and S Bir Devinder Singh, former Deputy Speaker of Punjab Vidhan Sabha who shared their memories with Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra. Col (retd) Jasmer Singh Bala's book Dhiyan De Geet, an anthology of poetry was released by Padam Shri Surjit Pattar in this occasion. Dr Balkar Singh, an eminent professor, and formerly from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Adhyan Vibhag from Pbi Univ Patiala, presented his paper on this book. Col (retd) JS Bala, Secretary SES welcomed the dignitaries. S Gurdev Singh Brar, President SES delivered the vote of thanks.

Environmental Society

Red Ribbon Club

The Environmental Society of the College has been instrumental in holding various awareness drives, seminars and workshops. In this academic session too, the society in collaboration with Deptt of Science and Technology (DST) Chd organised various events like Collage Making and Slogan Writing competition for students on the theme ‘Clean and Green Environment for Better Future’ to celebrate ‘Pollution Prevention Day’ on Feb 3, 2017 in the College campus. Students of the College and GGSCW Sec 26, participated enthusiastically and displayed collages and slogans. Cash prizes and certificates were given to the participants. A rally was also organised by the students to create awareness about safe and pollution free environment.

To carry the baton forward Environmental Society in collaboration with Punjab State Council of Science and Technology, Chd organised an Expert Lecture on ‘Water Management’ by Prof UN Roy, Head,

Deptt of Rural Development, NITTTR, Sec 26 Chd on Feb 18, 2017. Students actively participated in Caption Writing Contest organised on the occasion. They also performed skits on the theme ‘Save Earth’. Cash prizes and certificates were awarded to the participating students.

Lectures by experts Wg Cdr GS Grewal and Wg Cdr Khokhar were delivered on the theme of Road Safety on Mar 4-7, 2017. The expert talk was organised by the Environmental Society especially for the awareness of the first year undergraduate students.

Along with this, compulsory environmental classes were held for undergraduate students of first year of all streams in Feb - Mar, 2017.

A Tree Plantation Drive was planned in the Herbal Garden in collaboration with PSCST, Chd on Mar 8, 2017. Traditional plants were distributed among students. Dr Mandeep Dhami (PG Deptt of Chemistry is coordinator of the Society)

Red Ribbon Club (RRC) programme is a voluntary, on-campus intervention, aimed at enhancing the risk perception and creating awareness about prevention of HIV among the youth. RRC programmes have become a powerful medium to reach out to young people for spreading awareness about AIDS. RRC empowers students in the age group of 17–25 by giving them information and life-skills to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and transforming the most active volunteers into peer educators. The Red Ribbon Club of the College has been actively engaged in sensitising students and society about AIDS.

This year, an AIDS Awareness Rally and a candle light procession was carried out by the volunteers of the college on WORLD AIDS DAY, Dec 1, 2016. Students of the college along with the faculty members participated in the awareness drive carried

out by local unit of NACO at Sec 17 Plaza, Chd. The volunteers participated enthusiastically holding banners and candles to disseminate the message of AIDS awareness.

Health Day was organised on the same day in the College in commemoration of the World AIDS Day. A lecture was delivered by Dr Sanjay Badada, Associate Professor, Deptt of Endocrinology, PGI, enlightening students about the vitality of healthy life. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Dr Atul Sachdev, Director Principal, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sec 32, Chd. He also motivated the students and faculty to fight the menace of AIDS. Later he flagged off a rally within the campus led by the volunteers of Red Ribbon Club of the College. Dr Shelly Narang (PG Deptt of English) is coordinator of the Red Ribbon Club.

Achievements of Paigam Dramatic Club- 2016-17

TechMates club of PG Deptt of Computer Science was formed with an endeavour to provide a platform to its students to hone their technical and creative abilities through various intra department events and competitions like PPT presentation, poster making, industrial visits, seminars and workshops as a part of a part of the club activities. The club organised an intra-deptt PPT competition on the theme ‘Technology: Enabling the Disabled’ on Science Day Celebration on Feb 28, 2017. In collaboration with Placement Cell of the Department, it organised a seminar on ‘Advanced Technologies used by IT Companies’ by Mr Manjit Singh, Director OOPs Info Solutions Pvt Ltd on Mar 10, 2017. The Club activities are steered by Ms Purnima and Ms Manbir Sandhu of the Department.

The students of PG Deptt of Computer Science also participate in Inter-college IT competitions / fests and bring laurels for the College. Arpit (BA IT III), Shubam (BCA II) and team bagged 1st prize in skit in

TechRiti, PGGC 46 on Nov 9, 2016 and in TechZeal of PGGCG 11 on Nov 11, 2016. Also Anantha Vishnu (BCAIII) and Dheeraj Kumar (MSc IT) stood 1st in IT Quiz in TechZeal of PGGCG 11. This is managed by Ms Manbir Sandhu as convenor, Ms Anu Kaul, Ms Neha Saini and Ms Divya Bhalla.

The Expressions Club of PG Deptt of Commerce organised a Management Fest, 'Expression-2017’ to explore the talent of Commerce and Management Students on Feb 15, 2017. More than 100 students from different colleges of Chandigarh, Mohali and Ludhiana participated in Business Quiz, T-shirt Painting, Debate, Ad-Mad Show and Business Proposal. Talent of students was judged by Prof Meena Sharma, Prof Rupinderbir Kaur and Prof Seema Jaitley. The theme for debate was ‘Cashless Economy- A Boon for the Economy’ and for Business Proposal was Startup Plans for T-shirt Painting and Ad Mad Show, students advertised their imaginary products through innovative advertisement styles. This group participated in various competitions / fests organised by other institutions in and around Chandigarh. IT Fest was conducted on Mar 30, 2017 by the Deptt of Computer Science. Dr HK Sardana, Chief Scientist, CSIR-CSIO Chd was the Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker and Mr Vivek Atray (IAS) Author, Advisor & Motivational Speaker was the Guest of Honour for the event. 10 competitions (IT and Non IT events) were orgnaised where around 160 students participated from 13 colleges. An untiring team comprising of the department faculty along with the technical staff under Ms Gurpreet Kaur HOD as Coordinator; and Ms Manbir Sandhu and Ms Meena Gupta as Conveners successfully organised the fest.

Other Clubs / Societies

To commemorate the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the College, an Inter-College Poetry Recitation and Declamation Competition was organised on Jan 25, 2017. Topics provided for poetry recitation and declamation were ‘Feminism’ and ‘The Power of Social Media’ respectively. As many as 11 teams from various colleges, universities, and other academic institutions participated in the event.

Eminent personalities like Khushwant Singh, a renowned writer and columnist and Sarabjit Pandher, a renowned analyst and commentator on Punjab affairs were the Judges for the event. Khushwant Singh’s books Maharaja in Denims, Turbaned Tornado, Sikhs Unlimited have been added to the College Library collection for the students to read.

Ms Punit HOD (Deptt of Political Science) and Dr Navjot Kaur (PG Deptt of English) were the convenors of the event.

Vikalp is a club instituted to hone the Hindi speaking skills of the students. Dr Anish Kumar is the Coordinator of Vikalp.

Mosaic, the Literary Club of PG Deptt of English was formed on Feb 12, 2016. The Club organises Creative Writing Competition, Poetry Recitation and other literary activities. Students participate actively which helps them in developing their creatives faculties.

Punjabi Sahit Sabha promotes interest among students in Punjabi Language and Literature. It encourages writing as well as speaking skills.

Zoology Society organises various events and visits for the better understanding of the subject.

Chemical Society organises various activities such as expert lectures, educational trips, Fresher and Farewell parties for the science students.

The Economics Society was formed by the efforts of the faculty and students of the PG Deptt of Economics in 2011 to spread love for the subject and build dedicated commitment towards this dynamic and multi-faceted subject amongst its students. Principal Dr Jyoti Lamba; Dr Navjot Kaur (PG Deptt of English), former Editor-in-Chief, Agammi Jyot; and the entire editorial team on the final day of the College Founders’ Day function after the Bhog of the Akhand Path ceremony.

Being a Celebratory Issue on the occasion of the 350th Parkash Purb of Guru Gobind Singh ji and the Golden Jubilee of the College, a special effort was put in to reflect the same in terms of design and contents. In this issue, a modest attempt has been made to pay homage and express reverence to the tenth Sikh guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, a saint-scholar-soldier par excellence in the articles of ‘Sikh Religion, Philosophy and Ideology Section’ which are specifically dedicated to this purpose.

Additionally, keeping the continuing celebratory spirit in mind, supplementary sections, The Circle of Life containing articles from alumni and ex associates of the College who are still contributing to the College in one way or another as a teacher, sports coach, a cultural item coach, or sending their progeny to the College; and A Brief History of Various Departments have been specially compiled for the readers’ pleasure and information.

Apart from the above mentioned sections, the successful completion of the regular sections stipulate appreciation to the guest contributors, learned staff members and our very own students for articulating their creativity on this forum especially intended for their expression. A vast editorial team comprising of 9 editors and 9 student editors had been working relentlessly to make this issue a success.

The objectives behind creation of college website www.sggscollegechandigarh.in are to provide its visitors with:

Ø The updated information about the college and its various departments. Along with the information about the latest achievements of the institute and post them on the website by way of write ups and pictures.

Ø To provide updates about recent happenings in the college regarding Academic, Sports and Cultural activities.

Ø Update all communications, notices, announcements etc on a regular basis

Ø To have a public platform through which any information about Admission procedure, Placement Cell, Workshops, Seminars, Annual Convocation, Alumni, etc can be shared.

The team for the college website maintenance includes Ms Meena Gupta, Ms Anu Kaul, Ms Navneet Sandhu and Mr Kapil Kaushik (Technical Assistant) all from PG Deptt of Computer Science.

The Media Cell has been closely coordinating with leading newspapers before and after the activity to ensure that the events hosted by the college get adequate coverage in the media. With over a hundred press releases in the ongoing academic session, the Cell has been instrumental in highlighting its newsworthy academic, sports and co-curricular activities to the public. The Facebook page of the college, which is an important tool of social mass media, is used to upload and relay important information and functions to the students, public and other stakeholders on a regular basis.

The current session was witness to the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the college. Many prominent events were held that kept the college in the limelight. The events comprised of a Panel Discussion on “Punjab’s Progress: 1966 Onwards”, a National Seminar

on “Multiculturalism in Literature: Re-inventing Identities”, an MHRD sponsored National workshop on “Basic ICT Skills, E-learning and MOOCs”, Celebration of Science Day, “Know your Army” an exhibition on the weapons and other instruments used by the army, a Literary Forum of eminent poets and dignitaries in association with Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi and SES and an ICSSR sponsored National seminar on “Post Colonial Punjab: Challenges, Continuity and Change (1947-1966)”. These events in addition to the laudable achievements of our students in Sports and Youth Festivals kept the media abuzz.

A plethora of these events saw eminent scholars and personalities visit the campus. A few of these were Padma Shri Surjit Patar, a renowned poet and writer, Prof AK Bakshi, Chairman of Centre for Guru Angad Dev Training Centre (GAD TLC) of the MHRD,

Trips and ToursA one day Educational Tour to CSIO Chd was organised by the PG Deptt of Chemistry for MSc students on Mar 3, 2017. Three faculty members of the department Dr Gurpreet Kaur, Dr Sujata Vohra and Dr Yadwinder Singh along with 40 students visited various research laboratories in CSIO. To keep abreast with different instrumental techniques and their applications in various fields, an interactive session on ‘Spectroscopic Techniques and demonstration of Instruments like UV-Visible spectrophotometer, Gas HPLC and NIR etc’ by research scholars was conducted during the visit.

The PG Deptt of Commerce organised 2 trips: 3-day trip of 42 students to Kullu, Manali and Manikaran Sahib on Oct 24-26, 2016 where Dr Manjinder Singh, Ms Sumedha V Khanna, Ms Amandeep Kaur, Ms Navneet Kaur and Dr Jagdeep Singh (Deptt of Punjabi) accompanied the trip and another 3-day trip of 35 students to Manali and Manikaran Sahib on Feb 17-19, 2017 was accompanied by Prof Balraj Singh,

Prof Amanjot Kaur, Dr AnupamaVashisht and Dr Manik Gupta (Deptt of Chemistry).

The PG Deptt of Computer Science organised an educational trip of 40 students with 4 teachers Dr Rupinder Pal Kaur, Dr Anish Kumar (Deptt of Hindi), Ms Neha Saini and Ms Manpreet Kaur to Shimla on Nov 19, 2016.

The PG Deptt of English organised an educational-cum-cultural field trip for the postgraduate students of the department to Virasat-e-Khalsa, Sri Anandpur Sahib on Feb 23, 2017. Around 35 students from the College and GGSCW, accompanied by 8 teachers went to the trip that was undertaken to familiarise the students with the culture and heritage of the Punjab. Students took a walk through the museum designed to showcase the tradition and culture of Punjab and also depict the history of Punjab starting from the period of Guru Nanak Dev Ji till the period of Shaheed Bhagat Singh to post partition Punjab.

Fresher/Farewell

PG Deptt of Commerce organised a freshers' party to welcome new entrants of MCom so as to create ever lasting relationships of unity and togetherness. Jovial smiles and high spirits marked the welcome party for the students. With pulsating ambience, flashing lights and foot tapping music, the party became a blast. Number of fun games and tasks were organised. Many titles like Mr and Ms Fresher, Mr Confident, Ms Charming, Ms Well Dressed were awarded to the students. Dr Jyoti Lamba graced the occasion with her presence and gave motivate the students.

The science undergraduate (Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology) students and the postgraduate students of chemistry who joined in the current session were formally welcomed in the month of the Sep 2016 with a bubbly and vibrant freshers' party organised by the PG Deptt of Chemistry. A colourful programme with games, songs and dance was put up by the seniors. An informal interaction between the freshers'and the seniors was followed by the much awaited ramp walk wherein the young new entrants cat walked with finesse amidst a din of cheers.

Parminder Singh, all from the PG Deptt of English.The PG students of English visited the Shakespeare Comedy Theatre Festival at Tagore Theatre on Feb 19, 2017 to view the performance of Macbeth and Nothing Like Lear accompanied by Ms Rita Singh, Dr Ginny Kang, Dr Navjot Kaur, Ms Gursheek Kaur and Ms Priya Sandhu, all from the PG Deptt of English.

A gala party was organised on Aug 26, 2016 to celebrate and congratulate Mr Sandeep Singh Gill (PG Deptt of English) on his selection and appointment in Indian Police Service (IPS).

A Farewell party was organised to honour Officiating Principal Mr Kuldip Singh (Deptt of Chemistry) on his retirement day Sep 30, 2016.

Achievements 2016-17

Campus Beautification CommitteeThe Campus Beautification Committee in collaboration with the Deptt of Botany organised a Tree Plantation Drive in the hostel campus on Aug 9, 2016. On the occasion they planted around 70 Ashoka plants, which hold great significance in the cultural tradition of the Indian subcontinent. Various climbers were also added to the foliage to beautify the campus. This session saw the repair of the Green House. The construction of a pond has also been initiated to flourish various hydrophilic fauna and flora in the Botanical Garden. A total of 600 seasonal flower pots were prepared to beautify the campus.

The efforts of the committee has brought laurels to the college by winning 17 prizes at the 8th PU Rose Festival, in potted plants and cut flower category, this year. The hard work of the gardeners is commendable with special reference to the Mali, Sh Amar Nath, whose diligent work won us glory at the Chandigarh Rose Festival, winning 9 awards in various categories of flowers and plants. They also bagged 7 prizes at the Spring Fest Flower Competition organised by HUDA. All these achievements would not have been possible without the perseverence and extensive guidance of Dr Jasveer Kaur Brar (Deptt of Botany), coordinator, Campus Beautification Committee.

Placement and Career Counselling CellThe Placement Cell was established in the College in 2003 and it has been becoming active, forceful and vigorous over the years. The Cell aims at facilitating campus interviews for the final year graduates and post graduate students by bridging the gap between companies offering jobs and the employability of students. Placement Cell organizes seminars, workshops and interactive sessions with experts.

Dr Rimplejeet Kaur (Deptt of Sociology) along with other team members Dr Jaswinder Singh (PG Deptt of Punjabi), Dr GS Gill (Deptt of Physical Education), Dr Shelly Narang (PG Deptt of English), Dr Seema Chopra (PG Deptt of Commerce), Dr Anish Kumar (Deptt of Hindi) and Dr Satinder Kaur (PG Deptt of Biotechnology and Microbial Biotechnology) successfully conducted various activities. During the

session there were 3 drives, 2 lectures, 1 educational trip, 1 aptitude test, 4 fun activities and 1 seminar participation by faculty and college students. Notices received from different sources regarding available jobs and trainings were displayed on the student notice board for the information of the students.

A Job Fair, was organised on Apr 1, 2017 in the college campus whereby the participation of all the city colleges was ensured. 17 national companies and MNCs visited the College - P&G, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Competent Synergies, Eureka Forbes, Spectraforce Technology, CCD etc. 230 students from diverse educational streams were shorlisted for designation in Sectors like Banking, Finance, IT, Insurance, Marketing, Retail Consultant, Pharmacy, BPO and KPO.

NCC Army WingThe College has always been proud of its NCC Army Wing which has brought great laurels to the institution year after year. A total of 140 cadets enrolled themselves in the Army Wing in the current session.

Annual Training Camp (ATC)It was held at NCC Academy, Ropar from Jul 1-10, 2016. 41 cadets were selected for the camp and won medals in drill, shooting, quarter guard, volleyball competitions. SUO, Ajay Sangwan was camp commander during the camp. Major AS Chahal acted as adjutant and commanded different activities.

Thal Sainik Camp (TSC I, II, III & TSC Delhi)Four such camps were organised from Aug 15-24, 2016; Aug 26-Sep 4, 2016; Sep 5-14, 2016; Sep 19 -30, 2016, respectively. Two cadets, Anuj Sharma and Abhishek Rana, were selected for the camp. These are one of the most prestigious camps which were held at NCC Academy, Ropar and New Delhi. Cadets won many gold medals.

Army Attachment Camp (Chandimandir)8 cadets were selected for the camp organised by 18

Kumaon Regiment, Chandimandir from Oct 23-Nov 7, 2016. The cadets put up a splendid performance at the camp.

DCAT Camp I and II (Directorate Combined Annual training Camp)SUO Kishore Kumar and SUO Ajay Sangwan were selected for this camp which was held from Oct 15-24, 2016 and Oct 25-Nov 4, 2016, respectively.

Know Your ArmyUnder the patronage of Principal, Dr Jyoti Lamba, the exhibition Know Your Army was organised by Major AS Chahal, NCC Officer (Army Wing) on Mar 03, 2017 with the help of 8th Sikh Regiment, Chandimandir. Col MK Sharma, Commanding Officer of 2-CHD.BN.NCC was the Chief Guest and Col (retd) JS Bala was the Guest of Honour at the occasion. Principals, NCC officers and students across the

length and breadth of the tri-city visited the exhibition. The purpose of the exhibition was to bring awareness among students, showcase the weapons and other instruments used by the army and to motivate students to join the army. The exhibition was the part of the ongoing Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the college and dedicated to the 350th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. On the occasion, SUO Kishore Kumar, Cadet Shivang Sharma and SUO Ajay Sangwan were felicitated by the Chief Guest.

NSS ActivitiesThe College has 3 NSS units comprising of 300 volunteers who participate whole heartedly in various activities undertaken to generate a sense of social responsibility. The session commenced with Ms Amandeep Kaur HOD (Deptt of History) and Mr Sandeep Singh Gill (PG Deptt of English) as the Programme Officers of the NSS units. It was a moment of great pride for the unit when Mr Gill cleared the UPSC Exam and made IPS his career. Mr Bhupinder Singh (Deptt of History) took over the charge as the new Programme Officer. Another additional unit was sanctioned by the Education Department UT Chd whose charge was handed to Dr Gurpreet Kaur (PG Deptt of Chemistry).

7 Day Special NSS Camp: The College units organised a Seven Day Special NSS Camp from Jan 4-10, 2017 on Youth for Swachh Bharat, Visaka-Transforming India through Digital Literacy and Preservation of Natural Resources/Conservation of Cultural –Historical Heritage. The camp was organised under the supervision of NSS Programme Officers in the College campus and adopted a village Kaimbwala.

Ø Mr Bikram Rana, State Liasion officer NSS, Chandigarh inaugurated the camp. He inspired volunteers on the importance of community oriented education. A plethora of activities were organised in the camp. The first day of the camp commenced with the Poster Making Activity on the theme Digital Literacy and Youth for Swachh Bharat.

Ø The second day of the camp was marked by the

celebrations of 350th Parkash Utsav of Guru Gobind Singh Ji where documentaries on the life of Guru Gobind Singh were presented. Dr Prabhjot Kaur, Principal of Gurmat College, Patiala and Col (retd) JS Bala, Secretary SES Chd enlightened the volunteers on the life teachings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. A detailed description of Gatka–a Sikh Martial Art was presented by Ravinderpal Singh and other inmates of College Gatka team.

Ø The third day started with the workshop on ‘Road Safety and Traffic Awareness. The Guest of Honour Mr Rajesh and Mr Rajinder Singh from Chandigarh Traffic Police sensitised the volunteers regarding the common traffic rules. The highlight of the evening session was workshop on ‘Financial Literacy and Empowerment of Youth for Development of Better India’ by Mr Harkirat Singh from PNB.

Ø On the fourth day of the camp volunteers visited the Govt Museum and Art Gallery, Sec 10 Chd and Natural History Museum where they were acquainted with the rich culture and history of the region. Mr Harkiart Singh and Rajeev Gupta, IT Experts in Banking Sector enlightened the volunteers with UPI App and various other net banking facilities.

Ø On the fifth day, volunteers visited the village Kaimbwala, where they conducted the rally, enacted Nukad Natak focusing on Swachh Bharat.

Ø On the sixth day, Dr Gurcharan Singh Gill (Deptt of Physical Education) the College interacted with the volunteers and gave valuable information about the

Ø Last day of the camp concluded with valedictory presided by the college Principal Dr Jyoti Lamba.

The highlight of the camp was the participation of the volunteers in Digi-Dhan-Mela organised under the aegis of the Chd Admn UT at Sec 17. With the purpose of spreading awareness about demonetization and cashless India.A skit VISAKA prepared under the guidance of Mr Parminder Singh (Deptt of History) was also presented.

NSS volunteers participated in a Youth Development, Hiking-Trekking and Rock Climbing Camp organised by Deptt of Youth Welfare PU Chd from Jun 9-16, 2017 at YS Parmar Univ, Nauni, Solan (HP). Onkar Singh of MCom II was awarded as Best Camper.

NSS volunteers participated in International Yoga Day on Jun 21, 2016 organised by PU Chd.

Tree Plantation was celebrated on Aug 18, 2016 by planting trees in the college garden adopted by NSS units. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Sandeep Gill IAS followed by motivational talk stressing upon the need for inculcating a sense of social responsibility, dignity of labor and integrity of character in the students.

To observe Tiranga Diwas an initiative ‘Yaad Karo Qurbani’ to commemorate the 70th year of Independence was organised on Aug 22, 2017. During the occasion a Flag March was organised in which Programme Officers NSS and volunteers participated with enthusiasm. A documentary on freedom struggle was exhibited. Present on the occasion were Sh Subash Chand, Regional Director NSS Chandigarh and S Gurdev Singh, President SES who exhorted the volunteers to live up to the high ideals for which the freedom fighters made sacrifices.

The NSS units organised a Blood Donation Camp on Sep 13, 2016, in collaboration with Deptt of Transfusion Medicine, PGIMER and State Blood Transfusion Council, UT Chd to commemorate the Golden Jubilee year of the College. A total of 112 units of blood comprising of College staff and students were collected.

The birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabbhai Patel as ‘Rastriya Ekta Saptah’ was celebrated on Oct 6, 2016. On this occasion, a concise documentary “Life and Time of Sardar Vallabbhai Patel” was shown. Later ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’ Pledge was undertaken by all those present on the occasion. This was followed by a rally organised by the NSS units in the College showcasing the photographs and message of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

NSS volunteers participated in Global Youth Peace Fest-2016 held from Sep 26 - Oct 2, 2016 at Chd which was organised by Yuvsatta with the slogan “Let's Do More”.

The NSS volunteers along with Programme Officer Amandeep Kaur attended a Workshop on Digital India organised by Govt of India held at PU Chd on Sep 18, 2016. The College team secured Second prize in Quiz competition on Digital India.

Arshdeep Singh of BSc III and Rahul of BA II attended an Adventure Camp at Manali from Jan 21-30, 2017 organised by Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development in collaboration with Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali, Himachal Pradesh.

Shweta Chalotra of BSc III and Harinder Singh of BSc II participated in National Youth Festival at MDU Rohtak from Jan 12-16, 2017.

NSS volunteers of our College celebrated National Voter’s Day on Jan 25, 2017 by taking a pledge for ethical electoral participation.

A General Awareness Programme was attented to promote Our National Game Hockey and create an India where all sport receive equal importance an event entitled Hockey India was organised by State NSS Cell in collaboration with ‘Salaam Zindagi’ a charitable trust. Our volunteers watched Hockey Match at Chandigarh Hockey Stadium, Sec 42 Chd on Jan 25, 2017.

Gurmat Vichaar Sabha

To inculcate value education among students, Gurmat Vichaar Sabha, functions as a medium to amalgamate the modern thinking with the traditional values. Every session begins with the blessings of the Almighty. As per the tradition, this academic session, too, began with a path of Sri Sukhmani Sahib followed by a Kirtan on Jul 26, 2016.

The current session of the College was dedicated to twin celebrations, the Golden Jubilee Year of the college coinciding with the 350th Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The functions began with the blessings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji with aarambh of Akhand Paath Sahib on Sep 13, 2016. Various inter-college events were organised on Sep 14, 2016 which included Turban Tying, Gurbaani Recitation, Quiz (gurmat), and a Declamation Contest. A total of 105 participants took part in these events from across the colleges of tri-city. The competitions were judged by eminent scholars Prof Gurvinder Singh, Indian Business School, Principal Gurdeep Singh and Sardar Sukhwinder Singh from Vismaad Productions. The event concluded with an enthusiastic Gatka performance by the college team.

Bhog of Sri Akhaand Path Sahib took place on the third day i.e. Sep 15, 2016 followed by a Kirtan Darbaar in Hari Singh Nalwa Multipurpose Hall. The Kirtan was performed by famous Raagi Sahiban Bhai Amarjit Singh (Patialewale) and Shriomani Raagi Bhai Ravinder Singh Ji (Huzoori Raagi Sach Khand Darbar Sahib, Amritsar) along with the students of the college. Sardar Gurdev Singh Brar IAS (Retd) President SES and Col (Retd) J S Bala Secretary SES were also present on the occasion. Afterwards, Guru ka Langar was served to the sangat.

of the College aarambh of Sri Akhand Paath Sahib was organised on Jan 29, 2017. The penultimate day witnessed various events organised at the inter college level comprising of poetry competition, essay writing. Around 50 students participated in these competitions. Workshops on Ancient Gurumukhi Calligraphy was organised by Kalam Dawat Group from Panjab University headed by Mehtaab Singh Ji. More than 60 participants were present including faculty from the host college. The aim of the workshop was to learn how to write Gurmukhi with qalms and homemade ink. The day ended with a spectacular Gatka performance by the College students.

The final day witnessed a mesmerising Kirtan Darbaar. A melodious kirtan recital was presented by the College students followed by enthralling kirtan by Bhai Bahulivleen Singh (Nihang Singhs). Kirtan was performed with puratan maryaada and also used the instrument discovered by Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. The recital was followed by Prof Kulbir Singh (PG Deptt of Punjabi) and Bhai Satinderbir Singh ji (Hazoori Raagi Sach Khand Harminder Sahib). Guru ka langar, prepared by the students and staff of the College, was served to the sangat.

A trip to Sachkhand Sri Harminder Sahib (The Golden temple) was organised for the active volunteers of Gurmaat Vichaar Sabha on Mar 11, 2017.

Students Welfare Committees

The election for Student Central Association was held on Sep 7, 2016 strictly following the Lyngdoh Committee norms and the core democratic ideals of the College. The SCA works actively with the teachers in maintaining the academic discipline, organising various social, cultural, literary and sports activities.

Satnam Singh (MA II Pbi) was elected as the President, Kanika Arora (BSc I CSc) as the Vice President, Anil Kumar (BSc III NMed) and Rupinder Singh (BA I) as

the Secretary and the Joint Secretary, respectively.

SCA celebrated the birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh on Nov 4, 2016. Many famous Punjabi singers like Alfaaz, Monty Waris, The Landers, Sunanda Sharma, mesmerised the students with their mellifluous voices.

Dean Students Welfare, Dr Gurcharan Singh Gill (Deptt of Physical Education) is in-charge of the activities of SCA.

Being a coeducational institution, the College is sensitive to the separate needs of the girl students. Keeping their requirements in mind, an interactive session was organised for girls students on Apr 1, 2017 on the topic 'Intimate Hygiene and Women Safety (The Kavach Campaign)' along with an expert

lecture by Dr Nirmal Bhasin, Gynaecologist and Infertility Specialist from Janini Infertility Centre, Sec 38 Chd. About 100 students attended the session and benefitted immensely from the activity.

Grievance Redressal Committee and Anti Sexual Harassment Cell

Anti-Ragging Cell

The Grievance Redressal Committee for Sexual Harassment has been constituted to provide students a healthy and congenial atmosphere in the college. The Committee shall deal with all the cases/complaints of sexual or any other type of harassment of the students. This Committee has been formed as per the recommendations of Director Higher Education and

comprises of members from the faculty as well as the student community. The Convenor of the Anti Sexual Harrassment Cell is Ms Manpreet Bajwa (Deptt of Physics).

The Convenor of the Grievance Redressal Cell is Dr Inderpal Pasricha (PG Deptt of Chemistry).

An Anti-Ragging Squad has been formed in the College following the recommendations of Lyngdoh Committee and the Supreme Court Judgment on

ragging of the students in educational institutions. Dr Jagtar Singh (Deptt of Physical Education) is the Convenor of the Cell.

Foreign Students Welfare60 foreign students under various disciplines were enrolled in this academic session. These students are from Afghanistan, Nepal, Tibet and Zimbabwe. The students from Afghanistan participated in National Education Day celebrated by the Dean International Students, PU on Nov 25, 2016 at Law Auditorium, PU Chandigarh. One of the College students, Khalil Ali, organised a fashion show of Afghani students and the traditional dance ‘Qarsak’ of Afghanistan was performed on the occasion.

The College team of Foreign students participated in 10th SAUFEST 2017 (South Asian Universities Festival) held at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidalya, Indore (Madhya Pradesh) from Feb 28- March 4, 2017. In this festival the students performed two traditional dances of Afghanistan, Qaisak and Atan. The students of the College represented Panjab University in this festival.

Alumni AssociationUnder the patronage of the Principal, Dr Jyoti Lamba, the Alumni Association of the college organised its Annual Alumni Meet on Feb 23, 2017 dedicating it to the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the College. S Gurdev Singh, IAS, President SES was the Chief Guest and Col (retd) Jasmer Singh Bala, Secretary SES was the Guest of Honour for the meet. A proposal regarding setting up of digital library was discussed. An organ donation camp was also organised on the

occasion where Dr Pranav Mahajan from ROTTO, PGI addressed and motivated the audience towards the noble cause of organ donation. The meet was attended by over a hundred prominent alumni of which S Bir Davinder Singh, S Rattan Kanwal Matharu and Ms Navdeep Kaur were also present. The current students of the college presented a cultural fiesta. Dr Jaswinder Singh (PG Deptt of Punjabi), Dean, Alumni Association organised the function.

Foremost, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our honourable Chief Guest, Dr GS Kalkat for gracing the occasion with his esteemed presence. We thank you Sir, for sparing your precious time to spend these invaluable moments with us and inspiring our students as an epitome of success and achievement.

Behind every success is a dream.
