Land Transportation in Malaysia
3.1 Introduction Land Transportation in Malaysia
Land transport such as road and rail transport is the main
mode of transport in Malaysia. Thus, to coordinate all
activities, the Land Division function an important role as
a generator and driving the development and implementation
or National Transport Policy. To meet the general
requirements, the various public transport policy designed
to ensure that public land transport sector remains a safe
and efficient based on current needs. According to the Road
Transport Act and the Railways Act 1991, the enforcement
and regulatory duties are under the roles and
responsibilities of agencies such as the Road Transport
Department (JPJ), Department of Railways, Railway Assets
Corporation (RAC), Road Safety Department (RSD) and the
Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS). All of these
agencies are regulated by a set of units such as Unit LRT,
KTM Unit, Roads Transport Unit and NTTCC Unit directly.
3.2 Land (Road) of transportation in Malaysia
3.3 Public Transport
Refers to any and all of the family of transit servicesavailable to urban and rural residents. Modes oftransportation in public transportation include:
a. Mass transit is characterized by fixed routes andpublished schedules that make use of vehicles suchas buses and light rail or rapid transit, thattravel through designated routes with specificstops.
b. Paratransit is characterized by a more flexible andpersonalized services compared to mass transit, andit is available to the public on demand, bysubscription or on a shared-ride basis.
c. Ridesharing is characterized by two or more peoplewho travel together by prearrangement such ascarpool, vanpool, buspool or shared-ride taxi.

RapidKL is a company that own by another government-own
company, Prasarana Berhad which formed back in the 2004 in
objectives to provide solution for the public transport
services of Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding cities.
RapidKL services are including the RapidKL buses services
and rail services which include the Kelana Jaya line,
Ampang-Sri Petaling-Sentul line LRT and Kuala Lumpur
Monorail.
RapidKL owns approximately 1500 buses which basically
contain fleets such as Dong Feng, Volvo, Mercedes Benz, Kin
Long, An Yuan, Iveco, and some small fleets of Nissan,
Higer and etc. In year 2011, Scania K270 which is the same
model used by the RapidPenang will be added to RapidKL
buses collection. Old fleets from Park May Sdn Berhad and
Interkota Composite were either refurbished or eliminated.
These allow RapidKL to provide large area of coverage to
the area further from Kuala Lumpur. However, RapidKL today
still suffer from insufficient number of buses and cause
the bus services come with low frequency. Some of buses are
poor maintained and are weared out.
The RapidKL buses services can be divided into Trunk line
(Tagged with Utama and blue background), Local Line (Tagged
with Tempatan and green background) and City Line (Tagged
with Bandar and red background). Trunk lines are used to
link between Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding cities while
local line are serve as feeder from the main trunk line to
the small residential areas or from the LRT Station.
Meanwhile the city line routes cover the services between
different bus interchanges in Kuala Lumpur. In year 2010,
RapidBet routes were introduced by RapidKL which provides
Buses services through the expressway with less stop to
save time.

Whereas Rapid Penang was founded in year 2007 to solve the
Penang public transport problems. Since then, Rapid Penang
had perform well in providing public transport that cover
almost everywhere in Penang island and most part of the
Seberang Perai. The routes cover major tourism spot make it
a favorite for tourists who do not want to use
the notorious Penang taxi services.
3.3.2 Electric Bus
Scheduled to commence operations in June, the Bus Rapid
Transit – Sunway Line will make history as Malaysia’s first
ever full-fledged electric bus service and the first fully
elevated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in South East Asia. A
collaboration between Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana)
and Sunway Group under the government’s Public Private
Partnership (PPP) programme, Bus Rapid Transit(BRT) –
Sunway Line will also make history as the country’s first
project of its kind in Malaysia.The record statistics
aside, more importantly, the project will help tackle the
issue of traffic flow in Bandar Sunway and Subang Jaya, and
in turn, promotes higher productivity and healthier
lifestyle for the residents.
Launched by Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak
on June 9, 2012, the BRT combines the convenient features
of a LRT system with the usage of dedicated lanes,
environmentally friendly buses and customer-friendly
infrastructure.Ridership is forecasted at 2,400 passengers
per hour this year and increase gradually over the years.
By 2035, ridership is expected to reach 5,200 passengers
per hour.Fully elevated with a distance of 5.4km, the BRT-
Sunway Line will be serviced by 15 environmental-friendly
buses, seven stations including one with ‘Park n Ride’
facilities and a depot. With a top speed of 80km/hour, the
buses are fully equipped with universal access facilities
and has a capacity of 67 passengers with 25 seated.
The seven stations are Station Sunway – Setia Jaya,
Mentari, Lagoon, SunMed, SunU-Monash, South Quay and USJ7
as the final station. Station SunU-Monash houses the ‘park
‘n ride’ facilities; providing a total of 1,153 parking
bays including 102 special bays for lady drivers and 23 for
the handicapped group.

3.3.3 Intercity bus
Kuala Lumpur
Metrobus company buses are famous with its white-green-blue
lively which provides bus services between Kuala Lumpur
city center and surrounding city. The company is based at
Subang Jaya with its driving institute, Metro Driving
Academy. Large fleet of Nissan diesel and Hino buses allow
them to provide high frequency services. They are still
using bus conductor services for collecting the bus fares.
The advantage by doing this is to speed up the bus services
system.
