What is Broadband?
• As per TRAI: Broadband is an “An always-on data connection that is able to support interactive services, and has the capability of minimum download speed of 256 kbps”. ADSL technology is used in Broadband

:Broadband significance:-
Always on (Not on shared media)Fast (speed ranging from 256 kbps to 2 Mbps)No disconnectionNo additional access chargeTelephone and Data simultaneouslyFat pipe has to be continuously supplemented with value added applications to enjoy the advantage

BROADBAND NETWORK ELEMENTS
The Access
The Core
• Wired Access ( DSL, Cable, FTTH)• Wireless ( BWA, Wifi )
• The Media•Optical Fiber
• The Technology• SDH• CWDM / DWDM• ATM • Ethernet
Backend• Authentication Server• Content Servers• Web Hosting Servers• Video Servers
Network Elements – Technology Options
• Corporate / SME / SOHO• Residential User

CORE TECHNOLOGIES
DSL Technology:
•DSL may offer more than 100times the network performance of a traditional analog modem.•Precise speed of a connection depends upon the type of DSL employed.•DSL uses the same telephone line as traditional modem.•Provides simultaneous access to Web & Telephone removing the need for a second telephone line.•DSL remains always-on all the time
Telefocus’05
ADSL Technology• :• Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line• An ADSL circuit connects an ADSL
modem on each end of a twisted pair telephone line creating three information channels:-
• A high speed downstream channe.l• A medium speed duplex channel for • both upstream & downstream •
applications.• A basic telephone service channel.

Broadband Components
• :-• Customer Premises Equipment(CPE).• Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM).
• OCLAN Switches: for aggregating DSLAM.
• Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS).
• LDAP.
Telefocus’05
COMPONENT DETAILS• ADSL CPEs: At customer premises. On one end it connects telephone cable coming from exchange via splitter. At the other end, it connects to PC through Ethernet / USB Port.
• DSLAM: called as DSL Access Multiplexer. Size of DSLAM vary considerably from 960 Port , 480 Ports , 240 ports, 120 Ports, 64 ports, 48 Ports and 24 ports.
• OCLAN Switch: For aggregating multiple DSLAM and providing a common uplink to the core.
• BRAS: called as Broadband Remote Access Server. First intelligent device in the whole chain. It terminates the customer session, authenticates, allott IP addresses.
• LDAP: It stores customer database viz username, password and the default services that it can subscribe to.

Requirement at Customer End:-
• Land Line Connection.• PC.• DSL Modem (CPE) + Splitter. • PPPoE software to be loaded in the Client.
• Broadband Account (Username and Password).
Telefocus’05
Product Features
• One RJ 45 and One RJ-11 ports available.
• Supports Bridge and Router mode.• Supports dynamic allocation of IP address.
• High reliability, easy operation and low power consumption.

PROBLUM &SOLUTIONS• Some common broadband error
codes & remedy:-• 1. Problem: - Error-691: Access was denied because
the user name and/or password was invalid on the domain.
• Description: User id and Password problem.• Remedy: The case is to be referred to Central
Broadband Team. Central Broadband Team will reset the password and intimate that password has been reset.
• 2. Problem: - Error-769: The specified destination is not reachable.
• Description: LAN not enabled.• Remedy: The LAN Card has to be enabled by following
the steps given below:-• i) Click "Properties of My network place”.•
ii) Click "Enable the local network".
Telefocus’05
PROBLUM &SOLUTIONS• 3. Problem: - Error-676: The phone line is busy.• Description: Modem setting problem.• .Remedy: Reset the Modem (in on condition) by
pressing button available in the backside hole of the modem and again configure the modem setting.
• 4. Problem: - Error- 630/633• Description: Computer LAN Card problem.• Remedy: Update the LAN card drivers or LAN Card has
to be changed. • 5. Problem: - Error-678: The remote computer did not
respond.• Description: This is most common problems. It is due
to poor connectivity. Problem can be anywhere between B.RAS - Tier 2 - DSLAM – Modem - PC of the customer.
• Remedy: • Switch off / Switch on Modem (Power Switch at the
back of modem) and wait for 2 minutes.

Services Available through
Broadband:-High speed Internet Access: This is the always-on Internet access service with speed ranging from 256 kbps to 8 Mbps.
Bandwidth on Demand: This will facilitate customer to change bandwidth as per his / her requirement. For example a customer with 256 kbps can change to 1 Mbps during the video Conferencing session.
Multicasting: This is to provide video multicast services for application in distance education, telemedicine etc.
Video and Audio Conferencing.

METRO ETHERNET CORE
Metro Ethernet Core
Benefits:1. Deployment has started in Huge way across the
world2. Aggregation through Fast Ethernet or Gigabit
Ethernet.3. Highly recommended for high bandwidths
requirements.
Drawbacks:1. Technology getting standardized2. Limited support for VLAN’s.3. Single broadcast domain.
