Schedule of Bridge Course Conducted by Various Departments

in the past five years

Department of Physics

A commencement workshop for the first year B.Sc (Physics) students is being organised every year

by the dept. of physics at the beginning of the B.Sc Programme from 2007 onwards. The one- week

programme conducted every year during the commencement of the degree programme consists

of interactive sessions focussed on the conceptual style and mathematical and experimental tools of

physics

Objectives/Goals

1. To create atmosphere that minimises anxiety, promotes positive attitudes and stimulates an

excitement for learning.

2. To introduce relevant skills and methods for learning physics

3. To bridge the gap between +2 and degree programmes.

4. To assess learning levels of the new batch of students.

5. To introduce effective learning techniques

Report of Bridge Course Conducted by Various Departments

Department of Physics

A commencement workshop for the first year B.Sc (Physics) students is being organised every year

by the dept. of physics at the beginning of the B.Sc Programme from 2007 onwards. The one- week

programme conducted every year during the commencement of the degree programme consists of

interactive sessions focussed on the conceptual style and mathematical and experimental tools of

Program Components:

Although the structure of the programme varies every year, the following components are

common in the programme schedule of all years.

1. Commencement Talk by an eminent Physicist.

One Eminent Researcher or teacher from a reputed institution is invited to deliver the

commencement talk for the physics orientation programme focussing on the scope and excitement of

learning science.

2. Presentations on the overview of Physics.

The students are taken through a journey across the fundamental and frontier areas of

Physics. There will be one or more lectures and tutorials on the core topics connecting high school

level to College level.

3. Group learning Tutorials

This session aims at generating awareness about problem solving and interaction skills among

students. Different intermediate level problems are assigned to different student groups with 5 or 6

students in a group. Each group discusses various aspects of the given problem among the group

members and arrives at a solution through analytical and numerical problem-solving strategies.

Finally each group presents the strategies they adopted to arrive at the solution and shares the insight

they gained through the group discussion.

4. Conceptual Discussions

Another session to simulate cross-cutting discussions on various popular concepts in Physics.

5. Reading Session

Different Physics articles are given to various student groups as a reading assignment at the

beginning of the orientation Programme. Each group work under the guidance of a teacher. Each

student has to read and analyse the article in two or three days. Then there will group level discussions

on the individual impressions on the article after reading in presence of the supervising Teacher and

he conducts a group viva to assess performance level of the students. Finally there will be a combined

Session of all groups to share fascinating facts experienced by reading.

6. Lectures and Tutorials on the mathematical style of Physics.

The relevance of Mathematics as an important tool of Physics is emphasised in these sessions.

Approaches of Algebra, Analysis and Geometry in modelling some intermediate level physics

topics are demonstrated, encouraging students to strengthen their mathematical skill.

7. Experimental approach in Physics.

Role of experiments in unravelling the secrets of nature, milestone experiments in the

history of physics and familiarisation of some modern experimental facilities are explained with

help of videos.

8. Familiarisation of Physics Learning Resources

There are excellent, self-explanatory text books like ‘Fundamentals of Physics’ by Resnick

and Halliday , ‘ Lectures on Physics’ by Richard P Feynmann and ‘ For the Love of Physics’ by

Walter Lewin used by world-wide physics community promoting higher levels of learning and

inspiring a thorough and inspiring insights. Unfortunately many such books are not the part of the

syllabus. So promoting the use of authentic books of international standards among the students will

enhance not only their learning potential but their communication skills as well.

Moreover, Magazines Journals and web-sites highlighting the contemporary status of science in

general and physics in particular are also to be introduced in a new-student orientation programme.

9. Web-Assisted Science learning

This session introduces important websites , various types of science softwares and mobile

apps useful for physicsal measurements, doing calculations and plotting graphs etc and opportunities

for doing online courses.

In addition to this Student debate on topics like ‘ Why we chose Physics ?’, Quiz

programme, Open forum led by teachers , interesting Physics videos etc can be included in the

programme

2013-14

session, Conceptual discussion and Students’ debate as listed below:

2015-16

Orientation for the freshers: was conducted on 14-17 July 2015.The

programme consisted of 5 lectures ,5 tutorials ,one group learning programme ,one reading session,

2016-17

Orientation for the freshers: was conducted on 25,26 and 27 July 2016.The

programme consisted of 5 lectures ,5 tutorials ,Alumni talk, one group learning programme

,one reading session, one students' discussion session and a feedback session.

2017-18

Orientation programme for first year B.Sc. Physics batch is conducted

from17-19 July 2017. The programme was divided into seven sessions and six resource persons

handled different sessions as given below:

Programme

Outcome

The programmes conducted during last 12 years has positive impacts as

revealed through increased involvement of our students in various national level science

enrichment programmes and performance in various post graduate entrance exams like JAM .

The candidates for Walk-with-a-Scholar (WWS) and Scholar Support Programme (SSP) – two

college level schemes for Advanced learners and slow learners - are identified through this

Orientation Programme. As a continuation of this many Student enrichment programmes like

Nurture Programme series, JAM coaching, Study circles , bridge courses and interaction with

active researchers are organised . Thus the Orientation Programme is highly successful in

channelizing and concentrating our students in meaningful learning experiences.

Feedback collected from the students reveals that they are strongly motivated by

the programme. They could realize the need of a paradigm shift in their approach towards

learning. They could practice the interactive involvement in a class room. Reading session

trained them to unravel the concepts from a standard scientific literature through serious

reading. Various discussion and presentation sessions enhanced their interaction skills. They

could learn problem- solving strategies adopted in elegant text books like ‘Fundamentals of

Physics’ by Resnick and

Halliday

The irregularities in the first year Degree admission process – done through

university level single-window system – badly effects this orientation programme as the

admission process is not completed at the time of the commencement of classes.

Bridge Course 2014 to 2019

The department takes special interest in conducting bridge course yearly, with the intension of

improving various aspects of personality and knowledge for first year students. It is an innovative

practice introduced by the college to make the students aware of their course. The department

organizes the course in a symmetric manner to update students to start their course. BSc Computer
