zLatest predictions
From the start of 2020, the remaining carbon budget is 985 Gt CO2 for limiting warming to 2.0°C with a 66% probability.
The remaining carbon budget is reduced to 395 (235) Gt CO2 if meeting the warming limit of 1.5°C with a 50% (66%) probability is aimed for.
The remaining budget will be used in 5 year and 7 months if emissions don’t drop.

zMechanical, Electrical, Plumbing (MEP)
Mechanical: Heating, Ventilation, Air conditioning
(HVAC)
Electrical: Telecommunication, Power distribution,
Lighting, Security, Fire protection
Plumbing: Domestic hot and cold water, Sanitary,
Drainage, Gas supply, Compressed air supply, Steam

zImpact of MEP
The Carbon Leadership Forum estimated that the upfront impact of MEP systems ranged from 40 to 75 kg CO2e/m2
Components of MEP in this study included:
Mechanical: Equipment and ductwork for Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems*
Electrical: Generators, batteries, electrical service and distribution, wiring devices, and lighting fixtures
Plumbing: Domestic water piping and sanitary sewer piping*
*Excludes refrigerants and plumbing fixtures and fittings

zReplacements
Building Services are often replaced within 10 to 20 years of
installation
This means their impact is much greater over the building
lifetime
The Carbon Leadership Forum estimates that MEP can account
for around 50% of embodied carbon over a 60 year lifetime.

zImpact of MEP
The Swiss estimated that the Embodied Carbon impact of MEP systems for residential buildings over 60 years ranged from 70 to 190 kg CO2e/m2
Components of MEP in this study included:
Electric equipment
Heat generation
Heat distribution and delivery
Ventilation equipment
Water (sanitary) equipment

zPotential Savings in London
1.2 million square metres of office space were being constructed in
London in 2019 – the associated MEP could have up to 93,000
tonnes of upfront carbon (consumption footprint of 8000 UK people)
If this was constructed with best practice embodied carbon MEP
rather than typical, it could at least 25,000 tonnes of Upfront CO2
today, with ongoing savings in replacing MEP into the future
