President’s MessageY
From all of us at OHSU, congratulations on the occasion of your graduation. We are proud to count you among the growing number of professionals for whom OHSU is their alma mater.
Your education has overlapped with the greatest health crisis of our time, and the importance of supporting the health and well-being of others has never been more evident. As an OHSU graduate, you join a community unified in its commitment to service. This community welcomes you as a valued member.
I can only imagine what you and your loved ones had to overcome facing the additional challenges COVID-19 created during your time with us.
As an academic health center, one of our most important duties is educating and training the next generation of professionals who will help better human health in our state, our nation and the world. You are the future of health and science innovation. And that future starts now.
Best wishes for you and yours as you go forward in your chosen career.
Sincerely yours,
Danny Jacobs, M.D., M.P.H., FACSOHSU President

The UniversityY
OHSU is Oregon’s only health and research university. It also is the state’s only academic health center, which means it has the singular responsibility of providing healing, teaching and discovery. It is the city of Portland’s largest employer with more than 19,000 employees, and OHSU’s size contributes to its ability to provide many services and community support activities not found anywhere else in the state.
The university is a conduit for learning for more than 4,700 students. Additionally, OHSU educates people through joint programs with other universities; provides training to interns, residents and fellows in postgraduate medical and research training; and delivers continuing education to thousands of health care professionals each year. It is the only place in Oregon that grants doctoral degrees in medicine, dentistry and nursing.
As Oregon’s primary educator of health professionals, OHSU is continually creating and developing new partnerships and programs to expand medical, dental and nursing education to other communities in Oregon, and to boost the number of students being taught. For example, the Robertson Collaborative Life Sciences Building, which first opened for classes in 2014, has brought together elements of OHSU, Oregon State University and Portland State University under one roof with lecture halls, classrooms, labs and specialty research and simulation centers.
Patients from every county in Oregon are cared for at OHSU, and they often receive specialized services not available anywhere else in the state. Without these services many Oregonians would have to travel out of the region to have their complex medical needs met. Together, the dental and medical clinics offered by OHSU provide an interdisciplinary network of expertise that results in more than one million patient visits a year.
OHSU attracts leading scientists and top students who share the drive to explore the unknown. It also attracts money for research — $586 million in the past year — to fund promising studies that often lead to discoveries and add to the body of knowledge about prevention, detection and the treatment of disease.
Like other academic health centers, OHSU takes a leadership role in contributing to solutions involving the health of the state and the nation. OHSU investigates problems such as access to health care, care for the uninsured, health care transparency, ethics in health care, the health care workforce shortage, increased health care needs for the elderly, the use of technology in health care, compliance, patient privacy and much more.
32
In many ways, OHSU reaches every corner of the state with more than 200 active outreach and public service programs to address geographical, cultural and economic challenges throughout Oregon. Whether it’s improving access to health care for vulnerable and underserved populations, bringing educational programs to people where they live, expanding science education opportunities for school-aged children or volunteering staff time and expertise, no other Oregon institution touches the lives of so many.
The University MaceY
Historically, the university mace is a symbol of authority dating from medieval times in England, when knights carried them during processions with their kings. As the tradition grew, the mace became a ceremonial symbol of peaceful leadership, and maces were embellished with jewels and metals. Today, ceremonial maces are used by governing bodies worldwide, including the U.S. House of Representatives and the British Parliament. As an ancient symbol of authority, it reminds us that universities are custodians both of the enduring traditions of learning and of the power they bestow upon those who come to learn. The mace symbolizes the university’s governing authority and is present only when the president and board of directors are in attendance. It signifies the ceremonial proceedings have official sanction and is carried by President Jacobs.
The OHSU mace is 72 inches in length and includes the institutional logo in its finial, and bears the inscription: Scientia Medica Continuet. Those words (medicine and science, a continuum) have been central to OHSU’s spirit and focus since 1887.
Academic HoodingY
The academic hood has its origins in the Middle Ages as a part of ecclesiastic rather than civilian dress. Begging friars wore the hood, or tippet, over the shoulders and also used it as a head covering in inclement weather. In the late 1800s, the hoods with identifiable regalia became part of academic dress in conjunction with the cap and gown. The American Intercollegiate Commission standardized academic regalia in 1895, and those standards remain essentially unchanged to the present.
The hood is made of the same material as the gown. The inner satin lining of the hood represents the colors of the university that confers the degree.
33
OHSU colors are light blue, dark green and white. The outside velvet border indicates the academic discipline – salmon for public health, lilac for dentistry, apricot for nursing, olive green for pharmacy, drab for business administration, golden yellow for science, green for medicine and dark blue for philosophy.
The hood is awarded by the faculty of the school upon completion of the required course of study. Members of the faculty are selected each year by the graduates for the honor of awarding this insignia of academic achievement. These hoods can be displayed by their recipients at academic ceremonies throughout their lifetimes.
Academic and Service CordsY
A cord is an intertwined decorative rope with tassels worn with graduates’ regalia to indicate their achievement of various academic and service honors. The color and criteria of a school-specific academic cord is unique to each academic program and information is available in the school ceremony program.
OHSU recognizes graduating students who meet university-merit criteria in diversity and inclusion achievement with a service cord. The color of the diversity cord is light blue to signify unity and perseverance and to recognize students for their contribution to diversity and inclusion. This service cord is co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion.
To show respect and gratitude for the men and women who have made an unwavering commitment to the United States of America, OHSU recognizes graduates who are veterans and active duty for their service by providing them with a red, white, and blue honor cord to wear during the virtual ceremonies.
GonfalonsY
The gonfalon is a long banner that is suspended from a crossbar. The name derives from medieval Italy, where “gonfaloni” was the name given to community meetings in Florence. Each neighborhood had its own flag and coat of arms, and the gonfalon eventually came to be associated with the flag. At Oregon Health & Science University, each of the four schools and one college is represented by a gonfalon, and the “gonfalonier” – the carrier of the banner – precede each school or college during the processional.
